  • Cartoon Network’s Annoying Orange Creators Sued

Dane Boedigheimer and Spencer Grove, the creators of the Cartoon Network show, Annoying Orange, have been named in a lawsuit claiming the duo copied their citrus from a previous ad campaign for the North Dakota Department of Transportation. Reports indicate the creative team is being sued by H2M, an ad agency based in Fargo, North Dakota. As upcoming videos indicate, the crux of the lawsuit is that Boedigheimer and Grove copied their Annoying Orange character from a similar character H2M created for aforementioned NDDOT ad push.

    The lawsuit states:

“Defendants Dane Boedigheimer and Spencer Grove were raised, resided, educated, attended film school, were employed and first obtained access to ‘The Talking Orange’ in North Dakota and western Minnesota — the same area where Plaintiff H2M’s ‘The Talking Orange’ and its derivatives, were widely disseminated on cable television….”

Here are some examples of the H2M’s creations with the character in question:

And just in case the lead image didn’t jog your memory, here’s a video of the Annoying Orange:

Oh, and there’s a trailer for the fruit’s upcoming return to Cartoon Network:

Another aspect of the lawsuit states the infringement is, in part, based on the fact that both characters use a voice that is “perfectly in sync with the movement of the actor’s mouth, lips, teeth and tongue…”

The obvious difference comes from the eyes, of course, but is that enough to claim Annoying Orange is, if not an original creation, different enough to be considered fair use or, perhaps a satirical recreation? Or is this just a case of an ad agency seeing something similar to their creation take off in ways they didn’t imagine, and now they simply want a piece of that Cartoon Network pie that helps sustain Boedigheimer and Grove?

The fact that the two resided in the same area the Talking Orange campaign hits, however, does seem to imply some kind of inspiration for their popular Annoying Orange character? With that in mind, what are the chances Cartoon Network just settles with Fargo ad agency and moves on with minimal change to their popular fruit character?

  • Netflix Gets Cartoon Network, Adult Swim Content through Another Warner Bros Deal

Netflix Gets Cartoon Network, Adult Swim Content through Another Warner Bros Deal

Netflix has just announced new licensing deals with Warner Bros Television Group and Turner Broadcasting System that will bring more streaming content to the service in March of this year, as well as January 2014.

The deal with Warner Bros TV will bring Cartoon Network programming, as well as Adult Swim programming to Netflix. That includes Cartoon Network shows like Adventure Time, Ben 10, Regular Show, and Johnny Bravo, and Adult Swim shows like Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger ForceThe Boondocks and live action hit Childrens Hospital.

Netflix will get all the past seasons of the aforementioned shows on March 30th, 2013.

The licensing agreement with Turner will bring additional content to the service a little on down the line – TNT drama Dallas will become available in January, 2014.

“We are delighted that Netflix will become the exclusive over-the-top streaming subscription destination for past seasons of favorite Cartoon Network and Adult Swim titles,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix. “We’re also thrilled to be able to offer the latest seasons of Dallas, one of the greatest all-time guilty pleasures.”

Just last week, Netflix announced an exclusive deal with Warner Bros Television Group to acquire the rights to eight programs including NBC’s Revolution, USA’s Political Animals, and FOX’s upcoming drama The Following.

  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars Launches Incredible Season 5 Trailer

One of the highlights of the expanded universe has easily become Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The series started of a little slow in my opinion, but now that I look back on it, it was definitely done for a reason. The relationship between Anakin and Ashoka needed to be cultivated and groomed so they could trust each other going forward.

The other important part for the previous 4 seasons has been to show the relationship between the Jedi and the Republic, and how it will become strained as time goes on and the series pushes towards Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge Of The Sith. From the look of this trailer, season 5 will be a lot darker and looks to be completetly awesome:

As you can see, Darth Maul is back and will be in a story arch, so are the Mandalorians. It looks as though there will be a huge story arch involving the liberation of an occupied Alderaan. There looks to be ore death, and the enemies of the Republic seem to be gaining steam in the fight which leads me to believe that things are going to come to a head this season. I would not be surprised if there are only 2 or 3 seasons left.

Season 5 starts this fall on Cartoon Network.

  • Cartoon Network Brings Back The Classics With Cartoon Planet

Cartoon Network, where have you gone? Besides the launch of fantastic series like Adventure Time and Regular Show, you are largely off the mark. You have lost some of your best talent (i.e. Craig McCracken). You’re pushing subpar live-action content like Level Up. To add insult to injury, you got rid of Toonami.

This all paints a rather bleak picture of the network, but they seem to have finally listened to the fans. Cartoon Network, starting this Friday, will start a new block called Cartoon Planet. The point of the block is to air the old cartoons that made Cartoon Network famous.

What makes this really special is that the segment will be hosted by long time fan favorites Zorak and Brak. You may remember these two from the original Space Ghost cartoon who then migrated to Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, which them culminated in the excellent and under-appreciated The Brak Show.

The question though is what cartoons are they airing? All the classics are mentioned like The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Lab and Cow & Chicken. Unfortunately, some of their newer content is along for the ride like the mostly disappointed Chowder and Spongebob rip-off Flapjack. It’s sad that Courage the Cowardly Dog isn’t mentioned by name, but I guess I’m the only person who thinks that was the best show to air on Cartoon Network over the years.

The show starts this Friday at 8 p.m. and continues to 9 p.m. The programming block this week includes some of the best episodes from the shows they’re drawing from. The episodes airing this Friday are:

    Cow and Chicken “Happy Meat”
The Powerpuff Girls “Meet The Beat Alls”
Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends “Sight for Sore Eyes”
Johnny Bravo “Johnny Bravo Meets Adam West”
    Dexter’s Laboratory “Star Spangled Sidekicks”

You can check out the promo for the new programming block below. It’s a good first step back to the Cartoon Network we know and love. Now get more Adventure Time out and we’ll call it even for introducing the world to Level Up.
