  • Cancelled TV Shows 2014: Who Got The Axe?

It’s that magical time of the television year again!

We’re learning which shows will be back to entertain us with a new season and which shows failed to impress and are now gone forever.

It can be a bittersweet affair. After all, not all shows that are put on the chopping block are terrible. Sometimes shows are put up against insanely popular rivals on other networks.

Benefit of the doubt aside….some shows are just terrible.

So were the shows axed in 2014 the victims of impatience or were their own shortcomings? Let’s take a closer look.

    BELIEVE (NBC)

This show had J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuarón’s names attached to it. How could things have gone so wrong for such a promising show?

If I had to take a guess, it’s because these executive producers wrote and directed the pilot. They provided a foot in the door. The rest of the writers didn’t exactly walk through so much as fall flat on their faces.

Instead of impressing in the tradition of Heroes and The Pretender, this show devolved into a watered down Touch By An Angel knock-off with a storyline that dragged.

    THE CARRIE DIARIES (CW)

I am amazed that this show managed multiple seasons all things considered. I was certain it would go down after a few episodes. I think curiosity kept it afloat for a bit, but now that’s gone and sow is The Carrie Diaries.

I know this show is based on books about Sex and the City characters, but it was a terrible idea to put it on the CW. This is a network geared at a much younger demographic that SATC’s traditional demographic.

The original SATC fans expect sex and sensuality. CW’s known for pointless teen dramas. They are trying to up the ante with shows like Reign and The Originals. However, put these CW shows next to your average HBO series and they look absolutely virginal by comparison. It was never going to work.

    ALMOST HUMAN (FOX)

In my humble opinion, this one is entirely on FOX. Did you know that the entire first season of Almost Human was aired ENTIRELY out of order?

Yep. Some genius thought, “Nobody watching this show will care about a consistent storyline! Air them in a completely random order!”

This show, if allowed to build towards the end of the series in a natural order, could have been great. But it wasn’t and now it’s cancelled.

By the way, this is the second show with J.J. Abram’s name on it that got the plug pulled this season. Yikes.

  • Cancelled Shows: Is Your Favorite About To Be Cut?

It’s a sad fact that many of the shows we love most don’t do as well as predicted and get cancelled before we’ve had a chance to really see what the characters are capable of. We lost “My So-Called Life”, “Freaks And Geeks”, “Arrested Development”, and “Spaced” (BBC) way too soon, and without any warning I might add.

But TV By The Numbers has come up with a way to figure out which shows are about to get cut and which ones we can expect to see hang around a little longer. According to them, there’s a whole lot of television that’s about to be wiped from the face of the Earth; check out their predictions to see if any of your favorites are on there. There’s not much you can do about it, but at least you’ll have ample notice for grieving.

    1. Betrayal

    2. Once Upon A Time In Wonderland

    3. The Neighbors

    4. Trophy Wife

    5. Enlisted

    6. Rake

    7. Dads

    8. Almost Human

    9. Hostages

    10. Intelligence

    11. The Mentalist

    12. Dracula

    13. The Carrie Diaries

    14. Beauty and the Beast

    15. Mind Games

Among those being saved from the chopping block? “Resurrection”, “Scandal”, “Modern Family”, and “Once Upon A Time”.

  • 6 Shows Predicted To Die This Fall

Television audiences are fickle, as they have proven time and time again. The success of a show hinges on many things: chemistry between characters, plot lines, good writing, believable acting. When one or more of those things is off, you can count on viewers to find something else to watch pretty quickly.

According to The Wrap, there are six shows on the air right now that will probably be getting axed soon, for various reasons: “Hostages”, “Trophy Wife”, “Sean Saves The World”, “Betrayal”, “Neighbors”, and “The Carrie Diaries”.

Most of the shows are suffering from low ratings–“The Neighbors” and “Sean” are the two lowest-rated comedies on television right now–but there are also other factors at play. “Hostages” and “Trophy Wife” are up against some tough competition, with “Hostages” following NBC’s hit “The Blacklist”. “Trophy Wife” is being overshadowed by “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” However, it’s predicted that “Hostages” will follow through with the season, as it was ordered as a “limited run” mini-series. Executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer had other plans before the show aired, however.

“We hope to get not only two seasons, but a lot more,” he said. “So this is not a miniseries for us.”

Meanwhile, shows like “The Carrie Diaries” may still have an audience, but they are watching episodes online rather than tuning in during broadcasts, which accounts for the ratings dip for the second season: .2.

  • Cancelled Shows 2012: Several Network Programs Get the Axe

Cancelled Shows 2012: As always, there are a lot of them, and I’m sure some of the choices won’t be popular with fans. Of course, that’s always the case around this time of year, when networks are trying to figure out what to keep and what to kick to the proverbial curb for the upcoming fall season.

Honestly, none of the cancelled programs should come as much of a shock, though the list of departures is sure to ruffle a few feathers. I know a few people that will be quite upset that “Alcatraz” got the boot, though nobody should be shocked that the animated version of “Napolean Dynamite” was cancelled. Besides one lonely individual, I can’t think of a single person who actively watched it.

Other shows that didn’t make the cut were “Rob”, “Are You There, Chelsea?”, “The Finder”, “The Firm”, “House” (finally), and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. The first wave of cancellations came through Friday afternoon, though the list has been amended several times since this morning.

However, a few programs managed to survive the season with their productions intact. In addition to obvious choices as “Big Bang Theory”, “Bones”, “Family Guy”, “Glee”, and “Fringe”, other shows that will return this fall are “Mike & Molly”, “Modern Family”, “Parenthood”, “Community”, and “Parks and Recreation”. For those of you who enjoy watching a network brutally whip the rotten, putrid corpse of a once-reliable horse, “The Office” has been renewed for yet another season.

To fill the void left by those shows that are, for all intents and purposes, dead and buried, a handful of titles have been announced. Included in this list is the reboot of “Beauty and the Beast”, “Friend Me”, “Guys with Kids”, and “The Carrie Diaries”, the latter of which is a prequel to the hit HBO series “Sex and the City”.

For a complete list of shows that made the cut, swing by TV Guide and have a good, hard look at the fortunate few that managed to hang around for one more year. The list of current cancellations have been included below.
