  • Zoom Planning Big Moves Against Microsoft and Google

Zoom Planning Big Moves Against Microsoft and Google

Zoom has experienced meteoric growth as a result of the pandemic, but it isn’t resting on its laurels as it plans to take on Microsoft and Google.

Prior to the pandemic, Zoom was primarily an enterprise service, but its popularity has broadened significantly. Now the platform is used, not only for business and enterprise, but for remote schooling, religious services and socialization.

The company is planning to capitalize on its success, moving into areas traditionally dominated by Microsoft and Google. According to The Information, Zoom is planning to launch email and calendar services. This would the put the company in direction competition with Microsoft Outlook, as well as Google Workspace.

Zoom is expected to make the email service available to some customers as soon as next year, although there is less information on the calendar service. The company has also been hiring for positions involving integration with third-party services, such as Dropbox and Asana.

Should The Information’s sources be correct, this would represent a significant move for Zoom and would likely be a big win, especially if the company can offer a well-integrated, comprehensive experience.

  • Microsoft Slips Ads Into Windows 10 and This Time They Can’t Be Disabled

Microsoft Slips Ads Into Windows 10 and This Time They Can’t Be Disabled

MSPoweruser is reporting that Microsoft has—once again—slipped ads into Windows 10 apps, including Mail and Calendar. Unlike previous instances, however, this time the ads cannot be disabled.

The last time Microsoft placed ads in their flagship apps was over a year ago, in November 2018. At the time, the ads were labeled an “experiment,” and did not display for paid Office 365 subscribers. In contrast, this time around, the ads are displaying for all users.

According to MSPoweruser, when asked about the ads, Microsoft said:

“The ads within the app itself will be displayed regardless of which email address you use it with. It is not removable, but you can submit it as a suggestion within the Feedback Hub on Windows 10 here: https://msft.it/6012TVPXG.”

It’s one thing for companies who provide free software and services to support those offerings with advertising. It’s entirely another, however, for paying users of premium software to be subjected to ads, let alone ones that cannot be disabled. Microsoft is setting a horrible precedent with this decision.

For a company that has taken admirable steps of late to respect users and protect their rights, hopefully they will reverse this abysmal policy.

  • Google Adds Latin American Spanish Option to Calendar

Google has just announced that they are making Google Calendar much more friendly to Latin American Spanish speakers.

Starting today, Google Calendar has a new Español (Latinoamérica) option. Spanish is spoken is much of the world, but the Spanish isn’t the same in every location. Google knows this, and has made a Spanish variant that better suits their Latin American users.

Of course, it isn’t easy to find a variation of Spanish that works for someone living in say, South America, but also feels natural to a Spanish speaker in the United States or Caribbean for example. The Spanish spoken in these regions differs greatly from one country to the next due to geography, separate cultures, customs, and histories. To give all of our Latin American Spanish speakers an option that looks, feels, and sounds right, Google Localization constructed a Spanish variant that combines the most common elements from the different dialects. So whether you speak Spanish or any one of Calendar’s 42 languages, it’s now even easier to keep up with your busy schedule!” says Google.

Google has already offered Gmail in Latin American Spanish since last year, and if you’re new to Calendar but have been using this option inside Gmail, you should be ready to go in Español (Latinoamérica) automatically. Otherwise, simply go to your Calendar settings and click the gear icon and change languages.

  • Microsoft Updates Mail, Calendar and People Apps On Windows 8

Windows 8 users have probably come to know three apps very well – Mail, Calendar and People. To help provide a better experience to those using these apps, Microsoft has released an update that improves overall stability while adding new features.

For many, the Mail app is probably the most used app in the Metro interface. As such, Microsoft is making it easier to access mail, especially for those with multiple accounts. The new version of the Mail app now displays all your accounts, and allows users to toggle between them with ease.

The new Mail app can also filter unread messages, or you can put mails into separate folders. A lot of these features are already present in popular email clients like Gmail, but it’s nice to see Microsoft finally adding these features into its own Mail app.

The Calendar app received a few small updates, including colored appointments to make the calendar “easier to read.” The Calendar also features a new Work week view for those who operate on a Monday through Friday schedule.

The People app received a new update in the form of easier sharing. Now users can right-click or swipe from the top to reveal app commands. These commands allow you to easily move between your own profile and the What’s New page that features updates from your friend’s various social network accounts.

Unfortunately, the updates haven’t been completely painless for some. The Verge is reporting that Windows 8 users with a Google account are seeing errors related to Google discontinuing support for Exchange ActiveSync. Google dropping support for EAS was expected, but those who had set up a Google account on Windows 8 before January 30 were promised that they could still use it.

There’s no fix available for Gmail users just yet, but everybody else should be able to take advantage of the new apps without any problem. To do so, just hit up the Microsoft Store Settings, click (or tap) on App Updates, and select the Check for Updates option.

  • Google Calendar Android App Suggests Locations For Events

Google has launched an update to the Google Calendar app for Android. New features include: the ability to call and go to a map directly from notifications, location suggestion on even creation and quick event creation from month view.

The app can be found in the Google Play Store.

The app requires Android 4.0.3 or higher. It has been reviewed rated 10,163 times, with 6,114 5-star ratings. The average rating is 4.2.

People planning events with Google products may like to know that Google added some new Events-related features in its Google+ Android app. For example, users can send messages to specific guests and see who has opened the invitations. Users can also invite people through Google+ or by copying the URL of the event into an email or IM, and guests can RSVP with the number of people they’re bringing. In addition to that, Google has added a new event duplication feature, in case you want to do the same thing multiple times. It will automatically add the details, so you don’t have to set them up every time.

  • MySpace Introduces Ticketing & Event Service

How does MySpace plan to stop the outward flow of traffic to Facebook and Twitter. Apparently,  by connecting with them and an ongoing series of launches rather than a single splashy makeover. And today’s announcement might have actually given artists and music marketers a reason to keep their MySpace profiles more up to date.image from www.wxlvradio.comLate on Wednesday, the social networker unveiled MySpace Events, a calendar and ticketing platform that allows artists and fans to create and share events. Each event appears inside the user’s MySpace calendar, including any from Facebook thanks to a growing implementation of Facebook Connect; and  they can be shared on their MySpace Stream, Facebook pages, on Twitter, and via tiny url.

    Ticketing & Targeted Event Ads

The tools to create concert listings are fairly robust and allow linkage to third party ticketing, which also provides MySpace with another revenue stream. Advertisers who want to promote an event can now also purchase a new special ad format that displays sponsored events directly inside the social calendar. When a user RSVPs "yes", they then also promote the sponsored event to their friends.

Myspace says in the coming months…

it will add additional features including mobile access, concert notifications and film releases.

“Ultimately our goal is to create a destination that allows users to manage their entire social calendar online through MySpace,” said Marcus Womack, Director of Events and Ticketing for MySpace. “Also, we’re providing artists with advanced tools to help connect with fans and promote their shows while conversely enabling fans to quickly and easily discover, share and purchase tickets to those shows.”
