  • Tornadoes in California: Four Twisters Wreak Havoc

Sacramento and the surrounding areas in northern California have seen some extremely unusual weather since their drought emergency. Although the rains and weather have eased the dry situation somewhat, California remains in an unprecedented drought.

Heavy rain fell in San Francisco Wednesday morning, but by the end of the day only about a half-inch of the much-needed rain had fallen.

Other northern and central areas generally saw a quarter- to a half-inch, with an inch recorded in a few places.

“Finally we’re getting some rain,” San Francisco resident Mike Vladimer told KGO-TV. “We need it. It’s been really dry.”

But rain was not all that this storm brought. Residents saw four tornadoes wreak havoc on residential areas and an added six funnel clouds were seen, which added to the damage.

The twisters and the strong winds that surprised California residents damaged homes. Officials said the storms and tornadoes affected between 12 and 20 homes.

Officials said they were stunned that no human lives were lost and there were no injuries. The fact that many people had acted quickly, seeking immediate shelter from the storm, is probably what kept them safe from harm.

The tornadoes sent roof tiles and solar panels flying, leaving residents of the city of Roseville in shock over the rare event, officials said on Thursday

It happened late Wednesday in a residential area of Roseville, CA about 18-miles north of the state capital, Sacramento. Winds and wind tunnels ripped through a distance measuring some 100 yards, a Roseville Fire Department spokesman said. Another twister touched down in Ordbend, the weather service reported. There were reports of at least four tornadoes in the area, putting residents in turmoil and chaos.

“It kind of touched down pretty quickly and went back up,” said the Roseville spokesman, Rob Baquera. “Roof tiles went flying off, solar panels … and a boat was lifted up and moved about six feet from where it was.”

Small funnel clouds occur about once a year in the Sacramento-area, but Baquera could not remember the last time a tornado hit Roseville. While no one was injured, residents were shaken up and hunkered down afterward, he said.

“It was definitely a tornado,” said National Weather Service forecaster George Cline, adding that on the Enhanced Fujita scale it ranked as an EF0, the smallest measurement category for twisters.

Added to the tornadoes were torrential rains and strong winds that contributed to the rampage, and perhaps the fact that they continued in full force for nearly three hours. Hail also fell in spots, mixed in with the heavy rain.

Residents were advised to stay indoors as this weather pattern is extremely unpredictable.

  • Couple Saves Falling Child With Box Spring

Moving can be fairly stressful but a young couple truly had no idea what they were in for when they decided to move out of their apartment.

While moving their belongings through the back alley of their apartment in Burbank, CA., Konrad Lightner and his wife Jennifer saw a toddler and his sister throwing their toys out of a third-story window above them. As they went inside to get another load-including a box spring-they then noticed the toddler throw one of his legs over the window sill.

Shocked by what they saw, the couple sprung into action.

“The child climbed out of the window and was actually hanging out on to what appeared to be a telephone line or a cable line. They placed the mattress underneath the child, and at that point the child released and fell to the ground,” said Burbank Police Lt. John Dilibert

“We called 911 and Konrad threw the box spring down trying to break his fall and stood there to catch him,” said Jennifer.

Konrad was able to catch the falling child and help soften his fall with the box spring. Shortly after, a neighbor ran to alert the parents of the toddler who was later extremely grateful for the Lightner’s actions.

“It was very surreal afterwards. We were just moving the rest of day and every once in a while we’d look at each other and just be like, ‘That happened. That was real,’” Jennifer explained.

The three-year-old was taken to the hospital for evaluation but did not receive any major injuries.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the event happened before the boy fell. It turns out, the couple got stuck in the elevator for thirty minutes prior to the incident. Had it not been for the delay, the couple wouldn’t have been there to help save the day and the little boy. Timing really is everything.

  • Kelly Thomas Verdict: Police Officers Found Not Guilty

On Monday, Jan. 13, former Fullerton, CA police officers Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli were found not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges related to the beating death of homeless schizophrenic Kelly Thomas.

Charges that were to be filed against a third officer will no longer be pursued due to the acquittal. While Ramos was found not guilty of second-degree murder and involuntary, the Orange County jury found Cicinelli not guilty of manslaughter and excessive use of force. The fatal altercation took place on July 5, 2011, and Thomas died five days later on July 10.

Throughout the trial, jurors viewed the surveillance video which showed Thomas being approached by the officers at a bus terminal. The video went on to show the gruesome attack that led to Thomas’ death.

The prosecution argued that officers were excessively abusing their authority, continuously striking Thomas with a baton, while he was shocked with a stun gun as he plead for help.

The defense went for the obvious contention, asserting that Thomas reacted violently toward the officers when they approached him. The defense classified their actions as a collaborative effort to restrain him. As a result of the brutal lashing, Thomas suffered brain damage, due to lack of oxygen, caused by severe chest compression, and a series of other injures.

Ultimately, the jury ruled in favor of the defense. After deliberating for less than a day, the jury returned with a ‘not guilty’ verdict. According to the LA Times, the verdict left many flabbergasted. Thomas’ parents were among those left in total shock and disbelief.

“They got away with murdering my son,” said Cathy Thomas. “He was so innocent. It just isn’t fair at all.”

Kelly’s father, Ron Thomas, a former Orange County Sheriff’s deputy also weighed in with his own disdain of the verdict. “I’ve never seen such a miscarriage of justice,”  he said. “It’s so blatant. It means none of us are safe.”

Fullerton Police Chief Dan Hughes shared that the department has since taken “significant steps” toward exercising preventive measures in an effort to forestall similar incidents in the future.
