  • “Jurassic World” and “Star Wars” Vying for Visual Effects Oscar, One Loses to Other in Biggest Film Opening

“Jurassic World” and “Star Wars” Vying for Visual Effects Oscar, One Loses to Other in Biggest Film Opening

Jurrasic World and Star Wars are vying for the same Oscar. Both films are up for the Best Visual Effects award.

The end of the holidays means it’s time for awards season to begin.

While the Academy Award nominations won’t be announced until January 14, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences revealed Monday the shortlist of potential nominees for just one category, that of best visual effects, with Jurassic World and Star Wars among them.

Jurassic World opened back in June, and stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. It is the fourth film in the Jurassic Park series of films about dinosaurs.

In addition to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Jurassic World, other contenders for the visual effects Oscar are Ant-Man, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant (which just opened on Christmas Day), Tomorrowland, and The Walk.

From this shortlist, five contenders will receive the Academy Award nomination.

Will Jurassic World and Star Wars both make the cut?

In other Jurassic World and Star Wars news, Star Wars: The Force Awakens shattered Jurassic World’s earnings for being the biggest film opening ever.

  • Ron Howard Receives Second Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Ron Howard has received his second star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His first star lauded his acting career for roles on The Andy Griffith Show and Happy Days. This second star is for his career as a film maker.

“Two stars are pretty remarkable…I’m going to have double the foot traffic, twice as many people treading on my good name, but I think it’s a great thing and I’m proud of that,” Ron Howard said at the ceremony–with daughter Bryce Dallas Howard by his side–on Thursday.

“However, my ambitions run deep, so two is good, three would be better and I’ve got a lot of energy,” he added.

Ron Howard won as Oscar for Best Director for A Beautiful Mind. He has received numerous accolades for Apollo 13 and The Da Vinci Code, too.

“I have so few regrets, practically none, and one of them is just only that it’s been far too long since Michael (Keaton) and I made a movie together, so I’m hoping to rectify that sooner rather than later,” Howard said during the ceremony.

Michael Keaton joined Ron Howard and his family for the event.

Ron Howard has a new film opening in theaters tonight. In the Heart of the Sea stars Chris Hemsworth.

There’s no question that Ron Howard has devoted his entire life to the entertainment industry. From his days as Opie on The Andy Griffith Show to Richie Cunningham on Happy Days–and then all those films. Ron Howard earned both of his stars–and will no doubt continue impressing fans for a long time to come.

  • Alicia Vikander to Receive Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Rising Star Award

Alicia Vikander will be honored in January with an award at The Palm Springs International Film Festival. One of the stars of The Danish Girl, Vikander will receive the festival’s Rising Star Award.

Festival chairman Harold Matzner spoke of Alicia Vikander when making the announcement.

“In The Danish Girl, Alicia Vikander delivers a superb performance as Gerda Wegener, the wife of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe,” he said. “She projects so much love and pain as she goes on a journey with Lili during an era when there was no precedent for it. Gerda’s own transformation as a character speaks to the story’s themes of courage and self-acceptance.”

Past recipients of the Rising Star Award include Jessica Biel, Dakota Fanning, Emile Hirsch, Bryce Dallas Howard, Terrence Howard, Anna Kendrick, Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson. Howard, Kendrick, and Lawrence went on to receive Academy Award nominations during the same years they received this prestigious award. Might that mean Alicia Vikander is a shoe-in for an Oscar?

It was just days ago that Alicia Vikander was honored for her role in the film Ex Machina. She won Best Supporting Actress at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Ex Machina took Best British Independent Film at the British Independent Film Awards.

Alicia Vikander is someone the film world will no doubt see a lot of in the coming years. The Danish Girl will likely be her biggest claim to fame–at least so far.

  • Bryce Dallas Howard Keeps Her Kids Shielded from Hollywood Craziness

Bryce Dallas Howard is following in her father’s footsteps in more ways than one. Ron Howard was a child star and went on to become a famous director, but it was how he kept his kids out of the spotlight and let them make their own choices that Bryce Dallas Howard is emulating.

“No premieres — nothing like that,” Bryce Dallas Howard says of her childhood years. She agrees with her dad and mom on this one, and is raising her own kids by the same model. They get to see the sets, the shoots, the business, but not have to deal with the red carpet and paparazzi.

“Same deal,” she says. “What my parents did that was great was they exposed all of us to movie sets and making movies and the crew. We had a very deep understanding of the kind of work that my dad did. We weren’t exposed to the side of the industry that’s perceived as being more glamorous, where actors are coddled and where there’s a certain level of celebrity. We were completely sheltered from that. I think that that was a good call.”

Even now, Howard herself tries to be unnoticed when she isn’t “on the job.”

“I don’t walk around and have people recognize me, really; I live a pretty straightforward, simple life,” she says.

How is that approach working out for her and her kids so far?

“So far so good. It’s such an awesome thing to get to travel with them and for them to get to see that my husband and I get to do creative work that we’re really excited about and we’re really inspired by. It’s really fun for us and rewarding and challenging in all the right ways. I feel really grateful for that.”

  • January Jones Going as Bryce Dallas Howard for Halloween. Or Is That Jessica Chastian?

January Jones, the Mad Men star who wowed audiences as Don Draper’s wife for a while, has announced what her Halloween costume will be.

January Jones’ son, Xander, got to pick out his mom’s Halloween look, pairing it with his own costume choice.

“I’m Claire from Jurassic World, per my son’s request,” January Jones said.

So what is Xander sporting this Halloween?

“He is a T-Rex and the dog is a Raptor. I don’t know. He wants to be Owen and a T-Rex,” January Jones said, referring to Chris Pratt’s character from Jurassic World.

But, back to January Jones’ costume. She is going as Claire, who was played by Bryce Dallas Howard. Howard herself made headlines recently when she talked about her stunt work for the film, which included running in stiletto heels. But it was another Bryce Dallas Howard headline this week that hits closer to home for January Jones.

Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard have often been mistaken for each other. Just this week, Jessica Chastain told Jimmy Fallon that someone recently congratulated her on Jurassic world. But she is not in Jurassic World. That was Bryce Dallas Howard.

This is not the first time the issue has hit headlines. Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain were in The Help together and had a chance to suss through this problem.

“First of all, any day where I get confused for Jess is a very good day. She’s one of the most beautiful human beings I’ve ever seen. We went to college at the same time in New York. She went to Juilliard and I went to NYU. It’s been going on for a long time. I remember thinking that I need to meet her. When we did The Help, we met each other and the first thing we did was find a mirror. We stood in front of it. And we compared. We’ve got red hair. There’s enough similarity that people make that comparison. My goal is to play sisters with her.”

Chastain herself tweeted about the phenomenon.

So if January Jones is smart, she can hit houses twice on Halloween, once as Bryce Dallas Howard, once as Jessica Chastain.

  • Bryce Dallas Howard Running in Heels in ‘Jurassic’ a Metaphor for Hollywood Gender Fight?

Bryce Dallas Howard may be striking a blow for gender equality in Hollywood in her own way.

There is an old saying that Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire ever did in films, but backward and in high heels. Some men may snicker at the notion that doing something in heels is difficult. Those men have never worn heels. And it is heels that Bryce Dallas Howard is getting attention for now.

In Jurassic World, Bryce Dallas Howard’s character spends considerable time running — as does almost anyone in a Jurassic film. But Howard does it in stiletto heels. The scenes in which this happens are considered stunt work. The risk for injury is real and tool a lot of prep. Howard spoke about the attention those scenes are getting recently.

“If too much attention is called to it, it’s like, ‘Oh, man — maybe I did something wrong, because they’re paying attention to the thing that they really shouldn’t be paying attention to,’” Howard said. “But in this case, I loved it because I was like, ‘Yeah! Damn right I ran in heels!’”

As for how hard it is to do that, Howard admits, “Yeah, that was very tricky. So that was part the kind of fun side of that conversation always made me giggle.”

But Bryce Dallas Howard running in stiletto heels is also indicative of something else. Howard continues, “And then kind of the more substantive side of that topic was also, I think, really important and meaningful and talking about female characters in big action adventure films.”

“I mean, this is something that I’m so happy that there’s a heightened sensitivity to and awareness of, because that was something that was just always assumed: That a female character is just going to be sort of help facilitate the male lead and push the plot along. And that is not at all what this character was.”

When she was approached about her possible role in the film, Howard was told that she would actually be the lead, not Chris Pratt. Howard recalls, “I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it. [The director] was like, ‘No, no, no. She’s the lead. She’s the one that changes. She’s the one who you meet in the beginning, and you are with at the end.’ ”

“And then when I read the film, I was like, ‘Holy crap — he’s doing it! He’s really, really doing it. In fact, this character is a central character who does go through huge change, she is flawed and she has all the attributes that typically a male character in one of these movies would have. And she is the hero at the end — and that’s awesome!”

The Jurassic franchise has already planned two sequels for Jurassic World, and Bryce Dallas Howard is on board.

“I think that in the next iteration of this story, she’s the woman that we left that you’ll meet in the beginning, and it will evolve from there.”

  • Jessica Chastain Once Pretended To Be Bryce Dallas Howard

Jessica Chastain and fellow actress Bryce Dallas Howard look very much alike and that fact has not gone unnoticed lately.

In fact, Jessica Chastian and Bryce Dallas Howard get credit where credit isn’t due on many occasions for roles that the other played.

Earlier this year, Jessica Chastain even posted a song parody to Instagram of Bryce Dallas Howard claiming that she is NOT Jessica Chastain. Whew!

But, in real life, Bryce Dallas Howard said she loves getting mistaken for the very similar-looking Jessica Chastain.

Howard said of the constant mix up, “First of all, any day where I get confused for Jess is a very good day. She’s one of the most beautiful human beings I’ve ever seen.”

Jessica Chastain, herself, admitted that she has actually allowed people to think that she is Bryce Dallas Howard. Out of politeness, of course.

Jessica Chastain told Jimmy Fallon of one particular incident that took place on a New York subway in 2004, saying, “Then they go, ‘Yes, The Village was such a great movie.’”

Of course, The Village was Bryce Dallas Howard.

Jessica Chastain continued, “I had this moment of do I tell them that they’re wrong and it’s not me, or do I pretend I’m Bryce. So I pretended I was Bryce.”

I’m sure that would have been much easier than explaining the confusion.

What do you think of the confusion between Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard?

  • Jessica Chastain And Bryce Dallas Howard Clear Up Identity Confusion In Song

Jessica Chastain or Bryce Dallas Howard? Well, if you’re like most, a lot of the time you don’t know.

Just for the record, Jessica Chastain: The Tree of Life, Zero Dark Thirty, Mama. NOT Jurassic World.

    Bryce Dallas Howard: Jurassic World.

Both Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard were in The Help. Yeah, I’m not certain which one played which role, either.

Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard got a huge kick out of a parody video from Legolambs.

The video feature what is supposed to be Bryce Dallas Howard lamenting the constant confusion.

Bryce Dallas Howard recalled the reaction from both her and Jessica Chastain. She said, “My friend emailed me about that [Legolambs] video yesterday. I was like, ‘This is brilliant!’”

She continued, “We did a Dubsmash, and Jessica was dying. She was like, ‘Okay, this is totally a thing. We need to use this power for good and do a movie together playing sisters!’”

That is so amazing. Hopefully that will help to clear up the confusion once and for all! However, Bryce Dallas Howard may miss the comparison to the lovely Jessica Chastain.

She said recently, “First of all, any day where I get confused for Jess is a very good day. She’s one of the most beautiful human beings I’ve ever seen. We went to college at the same time in New York. She went to Juilliard and I went to NYU. It’s been going on for a long time. I remember thinking that I need to meet her.”

Bryce finally got the chance to meet Jessica Chastain on the set of The Help.

She said of that day, “When we did The Help, we met each other and the first thing we did was find a mirror. We stood in front of it. And we compared. We’ve got red hair. There’s enough similarity that people make that comparison. My goal is to play sisters with her.”

What do you think about the confusion between Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard? Can you name off the top of your head which one played Hilly and which one played Celia in The Help?
