  • Xbox One, PS4 Box Art Outed By Battlefield Facebook Account

The Xbox One and PS4 are still a few months away so a few of the finer details won’t be available just yet. Usually, the box art is one of the final things to be revealed with any new console, but it may have been revealed early.

The official Battlefield Facebook account was updated after the Xbox One unveiling to announce Battlefield 4 for the Xbox One and PS4. The graphic provided with the announcement features what may be the box art design for both consoles:

Of course, the designs could be placeholders for now. If it is legitimate, Sony seems to be keeping a similar box art design from what it has used with the PS3 while Microsoft will be adopting a more minimalistic design with its box art. It’s not a bad thing at all, and the deep green color looks really good.

We’ll probably see final box art design a few months before launch, but third parties, like EA in this instance, will probably leak the final box art design long before Sony or Microsoft does.

Now if only Microsoft, or a third party, would be more forthcoming about its plans for used games on the Xbox One. The official statement is that used games will be playable on the console, but Microsoft is being entirely too vague about the whole thing.

  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Announced

It was around this time last year that Assassin’s Creed III marketing materials began to leak onto the internet, so it’s no surprise that the past week has been filled with leaks for the next yearly installment of the free-climbing, hidden blade-wielding action game. A poster showing the title Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag teased that the game would involve pirates. Later, a map of the Caribbean in 1715 posted online, comprised mostly of Cuba, teased the game’s location and time period.

Today, Ubisoft has released box art for the game, unofficially announcing the next Assassin’s Creed installment. The image of the new assassin character on the box art clearly shows him carrying a cutlass and several flintlock pistols. If these accoutrements, the ship battle taking place in the background, and the name Black Flag aren’t quite enough to cement the game’s pirate theme, there is literally a black flag bearing an assassin’s symbol-themed jolly roger image just behind the character. Current rumors has it that this new assassin will be the grandfather of Assassin’s Creed III protagonist Connor.

One other item of note is that the PlayStation 3 version of the box art contains text indicating that the PlayStation 3 version of the game will include an extra hour of exclusive content. Sony and Ubisoft teamed up for a similar deal on Assassin’s Creed III, and PlayStation 3 owners were treated to a few missions involving Benedict Arnold’s betrayal of West Point.

  • The Halo 4 Puzzle Is Complete, New Box Art Revealed

Pretty soon, anything that has even the slightest modicum of popularity is going to be marketed in a viral manner. Granted, the Halo video game series is a little bit more than slightly popular, but the point remains. Viral marketing is here to stay, and considering entertainment-related viral campaigns engage the fans like no marketing strategies before them, that’s a good thing.

Take the upcoming fourth installment of the Halo video game series. Halo 4 is scheduled to be released on November 6, and to help increase the anticipation to a fever pitch, Microsoft sent an email to members of the Halo Waypoint forums, with the subject, “Your piece of the Halo 4 puzzle,” of which, there were apparently 32 such pieces.

The forum members pieced these image fragments together, which, when completed, revealed the box art for the latest installment of the Halo series. The box art in question:

As you can see, the reaction was incredibly positive. In fact, I didn’t notice any negativity on Twitter, which is a surprise in and of itself. Granted, I didn’t scan the entire Twitter thread, but the ones I’ve embedded are representative of the overall reaction.
