  • Boston Bruins Advance To Face Montreal Canadians

The Boston Bruins advanced to the second round of the National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs by defeating the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 in Game 5 of their first round series.

Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask was selected as the number one star of the game with 31 total saves, and defenseman Torey Krug was selected as the number three star with two assists and a plus-one rating.

“That series was much tougher than maybe the results showed,” Bruins captain Zdeno Chara told The Associated Press. “I think that we handled it well, we came into this series ready and we got the job done.”

Detroit, usually a perennial favorite when it comes to playoff time in NHL hockey, struggled to make the playoffs this year and wound up with an eighth-seed rank and playoff battle versus the league’s top team, the Boston Bruins.

“We’re not there yet,” said Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. “The last two years, we battled to get into the playoffs. To me, that’s a measure of where we are. Instead of battling for the Cup, we’re battling to make the playoffs.”

The Boston Bruins twitter page had numerous responses from the head coach and players about their Round One victory over the Detroit Red Wings:

With two minutes left in the game, fans were heard chanting “We want the cup.” The Boston Bruins will face the Montreal Canadians, which swept Tampa Bay, in the second round of NHL playoffs.

Bruins forward Iginla said, “Guys were never ever really talking about Montreal. We know they’ve won their series and they’re going to be next, but the only talk today was about thinking about Detroit and getting this series over.”

Boston finished with 54 wins in the regular season this year, with 117 points for best in the NHL. They also had the best Goals-For to Goals-Against ratio, scoring 261 goals and only allowing 177, for a differential of 84.

The Canadians are busy prepping for another chapter in the historic rivalry between the two organizations.

Montreal defenseman Josh Gorges said, “When you play this team, you know you’re in for a tough night. Nothing comes easy against Boston.” He added, “You have to fight for everything. They’re very well structured. They don’t give you much. You have to fight for your real estate, to get on the inside, to get second chances in front of the net. They have some big bodies and a lot of talented players on that team who can create things out of nothing.”

The Bruins have home-ice advantage in the series, the dates of which have not yet been announced.

  • Boston Bruins Looking Good in Preseason

With the regular National Hockey League (NHL) season just around the corner (October 1, to be exact), hockey fans around the globe are watching preseason games to see the talent their favorite teams have. And by the looks of things, Boston Bruins fans have a lot to look forward to.

In their most recent game against the Washington Capitals, the Bruins came out the winner. Though it didn’t look that way during the first period and well into the second, the Bruins were trailing 2 – 0.

Then came Bruins left wing Justin Florek, scoring a goal in the last minute of the second period. With 7:53 left in the third period, Bruins center Chris Kelly scored, making it a tie game.

With a tied score at the end of regulation time, Bruins center Carter Camper scored the winning goal in overtime. The Bruins beat the Capitals 3 – 2. The Bruins are now 2 – 0 for the preseason. They previously beat the Montreal Canadiens 6 – 3.

Even though we’re only two game into the preseason, the Bruins have already made cuts from training camp.

So far, six players have been sent to the Providence Bruins training camp.

Bruins fans shouldn’t be too worried about having the “highest average ages” in the NHL. They have a young goalie who is quickly making a name for himself in the sport. Tuukka Rask, 26, who has been with the Bruins since 2007, is becoming one of the best goalies in the NHL.

The Bruins will next play the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. And if you want to go to the game, the Boston Bruins have a way to win two tickets via their Twitter account.

Below, you can watch some action from the two preseason games the Bruins have already played.

  • Boston Bruins Bieber-Proof Locker Room

    Boston Bruins Bieber-Proof Locker Room

As if die-hard hockey fans needed another reason not to listen to Justin Bieber, the young musician recently committed a serious no-no. While visiting the Chicago Blackhawks locker room before a performance at the United Center Bieber was photographed stepping on the large team logo placed on the floor. Blackhawks player Andrew Shaw was quick to call Bieber on his faux pas.

Bieber, who is Canadian and therefore a hockey fan, should have known better. Not stepping on the logo is a tradition around the NHL, a way to show respect to the team. Even though Bieber was probably entranced by being in the same room as the Stanley Cup, he could have shown greater awareness.

In the wake of the international incident the Boston Bruins took greater measures to insure that their logo does not get trampled on by the Biebs. In preparation for his performance at TD Garden the Bruins roped off their famous B logo.

That the Bruins would go to such lengths to protect their logo illustrates just how seriously teams take the tradition. Much like the playoff beard, keeping your feet off of the team logo is serious business in the NHL, and is a rule that Bieber is unlikely to forget again.
