  • Arkansas Razorbacks Football Looks To Twitter For Trend Help

After the well-publicized Bobby Petrino debacle the Arkansas Razorbacks football team had to deal with, it’s understandable if the athletic department does whatever it can to improve the buzz surrounding the program, even if it means putting Twitter hashtags on the football field.

The sad thing is, if Petrino had not screwed himself out of his head coaching position, the buzz surrounding the team going into the 2012/13 college football season was going to be very high, and while the team has the talent to warrant such positive outlooks, the previous head coach’s fall from grace took just about all of that goodwill. With that in mind, the University of Arkansas’ athletic department hopes a positive Twitter trend or two will help people move on.

As pointed out by Dr. Saturday, Yahoo Sports’ college football blog, via Darren Rovell, at the upcoming spring game the hashtag “#GOHOGS” will be painted on the field:

The question is, will a potentially positive Twitter trend help the school/football program overcome the mess Bobby Petrino and Smilin’ Jessica Dorell left behind? Furthermore, what happens if the conversation surrounding the “#GOHOGS” hashtag descends into the “tear Pertino and Dorell down” hour? How can that be good for the program looking to move beyond such a mess?

This, of course, is the risk you take when you look to the Twitter masses to improve an already-tarnished image. You have absolutely no control over the message once it gets out. As for the hashtag itself, some find the move dubious:

Concerning the first tweet, don’t you just love how anytime someone offers an opinion about something sports-related, their observation somehow becomes the truth?

  • Jessica Dorrell: Phone Records Indicate She was Heavily Involved with Petrino

We reported to you earlier that Arkansas Razorbacks coach Bobby Petrino hired Jessica Dorrell, his mistress, as the Student Athlete Development Coordinator four days before the motorcycle accident that revealed their relationship.

Petrino was fired and has shamed his wife Becky and their four children.

But apparently his relationship with Dorrell was more than just a fling. According to phone records, “Petrino and Dorrell exchanged more than 4,300 text messages and nearly 300 phone calls over the past seven months — on game days, before dawn and even as the police report that hastened his downfall was being released to the public.”

The true victims in this entire affair are Mrs. Becky Petrino and her children.

Before he was fired, 51-year-old Petrino was earning an average annual salary of $3.5 million; that is money that will be sorely missed — and if Becky decides to divorce her philandering hubby she will probably not get as big of a pay day. Too bad she didn’t find out before the accident.

Check out this new ballad about Petrino:

Twitter users laugh at the ex-coach’s expense:

  • Bobby Petrino On Leave After Admitting Affair With 25-Year Old

Arkansas Razorbacks coach Bobby Petrino was put on leave yesterday after disclosing an “inappropriate relationship” with co-worker Jessica Dorrell. The admission came after the coach was in a motorcycle accident with Dorrell as his passenger and lied to administrators about being alone on the bike. Athletic Director Jeff Long appeared in a press conference on Thursday night to announce the news.

Petrino was briefly hospitalized for four broken ribs and a cracked vertabra after rolling his bike; no other vehicles were involved and Dorrell declined treatment at the hospital. When a police report was filed regarding the accident which included Dorrell’s name, Petrino admitted to school officials that he’d been having a relationship with her and said he had initially been untruthful because he wanted to protect his family; the 51-year old is married and has four children.

25-year old Dorrell, who is the Student-Athlete Development Co-ordinator at the university, has not been disciplined yet, but Long said he will have to investigate the matter further to see if action needs to be taken against her. It is unclear how long Petrino will be on paid leave.

“I’m at the beginning of the review. I don’t know what I’m going to find,” Long said. “I am disappointed that coach Petrino did not share with me, when he had the opportunity to, the full extent of the accident and who was involved.”

In a statement released on Thursday, Petrino said he hopes to make amends for his decisions.

“I will fully cooperate with the university throughout this process and my hope is to repair my relationships with my family, my athletic director, the Razorback Nation and remain the head coach of the Razorbacks,” he said.

Petrino has been with Arkansas for four years and has improved the Razorback’s game every season. Some fear this scandal will injure–or perhaps ruin–his career.
