Bob Odenkirk, David Cross Head to Netflix for New Show

Mr. Show‘s Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are headed to Netflix for a new sketch comedy show that’s not a Mr. Show revival – but sounds a lot like a Mr. Show revival.

Netflix has picked up four 30-minute episodes of With Bob and David. The streaming platform will also show an hourlong “making of” special. No word on when.

Odenkirk and Cross will write, star, and produce the series. Among the show’s other producers are Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, whom you might know as Tim and Eric.

Here’s what Netflix had to say about the show in a release:

“After being dishonorably discharged from the Navy Seals, Bob and David are back serving our country the way they do best, making sketch comedy. Four half-hours of brand new comedy featuring all new characters, all new scenes, and most importantly, all new wigs.”

Yeah, With Bob and David seems likely to tickle the same funny bones as Mr. Show (full title Mr. Show with Bob and David). Mark us down as excited.

  • Breaking Bad Prequel Promises To Be Television Event

    Relief is coming soon.

For fans going through serious Breaking Bad withdrawal, some vital information was revealed at the Television Critics’ Association Press Tour for the drama’s spinoff Better Call Saul. The show’s creator, our good pal and conflict-mastermind Vince Gilligan and co-showrunner Peter Gould, provided a few nuggets about the drama that should help fans with any remaining shakes and sweats.

Additionally, AMC released two first-look photos of the show’s production in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The cable network also released one of several planned updates regarding key information about the spinoff.

    Post by AMC.

First off, Better Call Saul, starring Bob Odenkirk, will be a prequel which centers upon Saul’s transformation from plain old Jimmy McGill to the shady but lovably quirky lawyer we got to know during five seasons of Breaking Bad.

This is the official synopsis released by AMC:

The series is set six years before Saul Goodman (Odenkirk) meets Walter White. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is “fixer” Mike Erhmantraut (Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad . The series will track Jimmy’s transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts “criminal” in “criminal lawyer.” The series’ tone is dramatic, woven through with dark humor.

We know that season one will run 10 episodes and that it has already been renewed for a second season, which will run for 13 episodes. The show is set to air early 2015 and early 2016. No exact date for either season has been announced just yet.

AMC president Charlie Collier said of the show, “When introducing any series, especially one with the DNA of Breaking Bad, there are countless factors to consider in making sure the show gets the launch it deserves. We have a strong history with Vince, Peter, Bob, the studio, and so many involved with this production; we are enjoying the process on Saul and all share a focus on making it a true television event. No half measures.”

We also know that the series will take place around 2002, and much like Breaking Bad will shift time periods. Better Call Saul may also include Walter White story-lines. “One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before Breaking Bad, during Breaking Bad, and after Breaking Bad. That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on Breaking Bad,” said Gould.

More updates should be coming soon.

  • Breaking Bad Cast Return To Spinoff Better Call Saul

To those who can’t listen to Badfinger’s “Baby Blue” without weeping into that pile of meth you bought for sentimental reasons, I have wonderful news: Better Call Saul, AMC’s spinoff of Breaking Bad starring Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman, may include Walter White story-lines.

However, they will likely take place in the halcyon days of yore, aka before White turned into America’s favorite dad/drug dealer and was just a high school teacher getting annual subpar b-day handjobs and praying for the end.

“One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before Breaking Bad, during Breaking Bad, and after Breaking Bad. That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on Breaking Bad,” said executive producer Peter Gould in the most baiting statement I have ever heard, ever.

The show takes place in 2002, six years before Goodman becomes involved with White’s antics, and will also jump between several decades including timelines both before and after White’s death. But White will not be the focus of the show.

“We’re trying to make something that stands on its own that has an entertainment value that is not just about seeing a series of old favorites. It’s not the series equivalent of a clip show. We’re trying to balance these things out” said Gould (“Are you or are you not bringing Walter White back to us, sir,” retorted my inner crybaby).

Whether or not White is returning, the fact that that the show creators used “What problem does Saul Goodman solve?” as a writing prompt is reason enough for me to tune in. Not that the show needs fans to increase chances of getting picked up for a second season — AMC ordered season two before season one has a premiere date more solid than “early 2015.”

And now, just because I can stand to watch knowing I may get another chance to love and hate Walter White:

  • Breaking Bad Spins Off To Better Call Saul and One Man Show

The acclaimed Breaking Bad, better known as AMC’s Breaking Bad, has not only achieved its own official spin off titled Better Call Saul but its own fringe festival one man show, One Man Breaking Bad.

The sixty minute play will be performed in August at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The official description for this play reads as follows:

Sixty Episodes in 60 Minutes. One Man Breaking Bad. See your iconic favourites come to life: Walt, Jesse, Saul, Skyler, Hank, Walt Junior, Mike and Gus Fring! LA actor Miles Allen has had over a million hits on YouTube, displaying both his acting and his incredible mimicking abilities. See him in Edinburgh after the sell out Melbourne Comedy Festival season of the world premiere of this incredible tour de force.

The tour de force currently has nine likes on Facebook.

“I realized that there was still this huge hole in Breaking Bad fans’ hearts and in mine when the show had ended,” the man behind this madness, Miles Allen, explained according to The Hollywood Reporter, We’re like addicted to it, as Jesse and Walt’s customers were to their meth, and so the natural progression for me was packaging it as this huge fanboy love letter for the fans.”

As for the official spin-off, Better Call Saul, the New York Daily News found out a few facts for us. Namely, it will take place before, during and after the events of Breaking Bad. “One of the great things about having a timeline which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before Breaking Bad, during Breaking Bad, and after Breaking Bad,” Executive Producer Peter Gould said. “That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on Breaking Bad.”

It might even feature Bryan Cranston.

If you want a taste of the spin off, a few promotional videos have been published online since September.

  • Breaking Bad Spinoff: Check Out These Promotional Videos From The ‘Better Call Saul’ Website

You’ve probably heard the news by now. The Breaking Bad universe will live on after the upcoming series finale. News came out on Wednesday that AMC will be going forward with a long-rumored spinoff about Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman character.

Back in 2011, AMC put out a faux website for the fictional lawyer complete with promotional videos. In light of the news, these seem worth revisiting. So, here you go:

There’s also a “live” office webcam, where you can see Saul at work:

There’s plenty more fun stuff on the site, including e-cards and a “Dress Like Saul” fashion show. And don’t forget to check out SaveWalterWhite.com if you haven’t already.

Better Call Saul will be a prequel to Breaking Bad, so just because Saul’s story will continue to be told does not necessarily mean that he’ll survive.

  • Breaking Bad Spin-off Picked Up By AMC

Breaking Bad, the show that follows everyone’s favorite meth dealer Walter White, is finally coming to an end in just a few weeks. The show is in its fifth and final season and the fifth season was split into two parts, making the last batch of episodes build in intensity for even longer. Breaking Bad focuses on Walter White, a retired chemistry teacher who turned to cooking meth in order to make money for his cancer treatments. Him and his partner, Jesse Pinkman, are helped throughout the show by the sleazy, but funny lawyer, Saul Goodman.

The show is currently wrapping up its final 8 episodes and episode number 13 just aired this past Sunday. Walter has gotten himself into quite a situation recently and for those fans that want more, fear not, Saul Goodman will have his own show after Breaking Bad is over. Breaking Bad will finish its five year run on September 29, with 3 more episodes to go. Goodman is played by Bob Odenkirk, who co-stars alongside Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul in the show.

Breaking Bad has become one of the most popular shows on television and just when viewers thought they had seen all of it, there is more coming for the die hard fans. As a large surprise since Breaking Bad did achieve such an iconic status, AMC did not leap at the opportunity to host a spin-off, but their hesitation to buy the project allowed several other networks to express interest before deciding to pick it up themselves, according to The New York Times.

It has been rumored for a while now that Saul would be given his own show, and today it was finally confirmed by the network. The show will be titled Better Call Saul, which is a reference to his slogan that is seen on his billboard and TV ads in Breaking Bad. They use Saul when they get in trouble and have no other way of getting help, with Saul being the master of getting things taken care of.

It has been said that Better Call Saul will be a prequel that shows fans Goodman’s experiences before he met Walter White. Further details are not yet available, although it is set up to be another hour-long drama, but will likely have a bit of a lighter tone than that of Breaking Bad, says Time Magazine.

  • ‘Breaking Bad’ Spin-Off About Saul Goodman Is Actually Happening, And It’s Called ‘Better Call Saul’ [Report]

Well, that was quick. Yesterday we reported on comments from actor/comedian Bob Odenkirk, who plays the character Saul Goodman on Breaking Bad, about a rumored spin-off focused on that character.

Odenkirk participated in a reddit AMA (along with fellow Mr. Show cast members David Cross and Brian Posehn). This is what he had to say about the show:

Saul spin-off? Don’t know. Really. I trust Vince Gilligan when he says he has a good idea for it, an idea that motivates him to want to work on it. Vince, obviously, can do anything he chooses at this point, so it’s a massive honor that he would put any mental effort into a Saul show. Peter Gould is a Breaking Bad writer who wrote the first script that Saul appeared in, and, I believe, Peter is interested in a possible Saul show. So…that’s a lot of goodwill and energy making it a possibility. But still, this is a creative endeavor we’re talking about, and then there’s the business side that would have to be worked out…so many hurdles. I am thrilled that people like the character enough to want that show to happen.

Today, Deadline is reporting that the show is happening, and that it is fittingly called Better Call Saul, which was Goodman’s slogan on the show. There’s a real website at BetterCallSaul.com. From Deadline:

Breaking Bad‘s Saul Goodman will live on at AMC. After lengthy negotiations, the cable network and Breaking Bad producer Sony Pictures TV have reached a licensing agreement for a spinoff from Vince Gilligan‘s acclaimed drama series. The spinoff series, tentatively titled Better Call Saul, had been in the works for months. It centers on one of Breaking Bad‘s most recognizable supporting characters, Bob Odenkirk‘s unflappable criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. Conceived by Breaking Bad creator Gilligan and series writer-producer Peter Gould, who created the Saul character together for a Season 2 episode written by Gould, the spinoff will be be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the Goodman character before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer, AMC said. The network wouldn’t elaborate on the project’s status, but I’ve learned Better Call Saul has a series order pending the complication of Sony TV’s deals with Gilligan, Gould and Odenkirk. The pact between AMC and Sony TV came after talks between the two sides came down to the wire, with other outlets, including Netflix, which has had huge success with Breaking Bad, very interested in snatching the spinoff series.

It’s not surprising at all that Netflix wanted a piece, considering how they love to bring back beloved characters from TV shows, and that they practically already promote Breaking Bad like it’s their own.

For Breaking Bad fans, this seems like pretty good news. Luckily we know it’s prequel, so the news doesn’t spoil the fate of Goodman’s character on the show, which has three episodes left.

It’s hard to imagine that this won’t have an entirely different tone than Breaking Bad, but it that’s probably a good thing. Based on the character and Odenkirk’s own career, I’d expect this to be a little more on the humorous side. It will be interesting to see if we see any other familiar faces from Breaking Bad appear on the show.

Spin-offs rarely work, but it does happen on occasion. Frasier, The Jeffersons, Laverne and Shirley and Angel come to mind. And this is a Breaking Bad character we’re talking about. Hell, this is Bob Odenkirk we’re talking about. Count me in.

  • Bob Odenkirk Talks Rumored ‘Breaking Bad’ Spin-Off About Saul Goodman

Bob Odenkirk Talks Rumored ‘Breaking Bad’ Spin-Off About Saul Goodman

As previously reported, actors/comedians David Cross, Bob Odenkirk and Brian Posehn did a reddit AMA (ask me anything) today answering numerous questions from fans.

We talked about HBO’s GO’s lack of Mr. Show here, but another interesting bit to come out of the conversation was what Odenkirk had to say about the rumored Breaking Bad spin-off about his character Saul Goodman.

Hopefully if it happens, they have a back-up plan for Saul’s hair. This was Odenkirk’s response to another question about that:

That hair is not mine, it is five different components / pieces that get put into my head. I do not have it at home, the Smithsonian has it next to Fonzie’s jacket and Rerun’s turd from “What’s Happenin’” the episode where the toilet breaks.

Read the full AMA here. There are plenty of other topics discussed. Cross didn’t have much to share on what’s going on with Arrested Development, by the way.

In related news, there’s a Breaking Bad Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set coming out, and one of the bonus features is:

A Criminal Attorney: Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman -A look at the character Saul Goodman and the man who played him, Bob Odenkirk.

  • Why ‘Mr. Show’ Isn’t On HBO GO, According To Bob And David (And Brian)

Why ‘Mr. Show’ Isn’t On HBO GO, According To Bob And David (And Brian)

HBO GO has a lot of great HBO shows that have appeared on the network from over the years, but there are certainly some notable titles left out. Perhaps the most notable of all is Mr. Show, the sketch comedy show that would go on to become a cult hit and showcase some of David Cross’ and Bob Odenkirk’s finest career moments (and that’s saying a lot, given that these guys are on Arrested Development and Breaking Bad, respectively).

Bob, David and fellow comedian and cast member Brian Posehn took to reddit this morning to engage in an AMA (ask me anything) Q&A session with fans. When asked why HBO GO does not include Mr. Show, each of them gave their own answer:

(Bob here) HBO has a hate-hate relationship with the show.
(Brian here) They are not aware that we did the show.
(David, back) They hate having to google Mr. Show.

So there you have it. These may not be the official HBO-endorsed reasons, but their responses appear to give us a pretty good idea of how much HBO cares.

The actors/comedians have gone on to become much more well-known since Mr. Show was on the air, so you’d think HBO would want to take advantage of that, but for now, fans will have to consume one of the best-ever sketch comedy shows of all time by other means.

The three are touring this month, with dates in New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Portland, and then in LA next month.

Check out the AMA, because they obviously talk about a lot more than just Mr. Show and HBO GO.

  • Wow, Look Who Auditioned For Dwight On ‘The Office’

A segment of audition footage from The Office has made its way to the web. It’s apparently going to be included on an upcoming Blu-ray release, but the video is already going viral.

Seth Rogen auditioned for Dwight, John Cho and Adam Scott both auditioned for Jim, Kathryn Hahn aditioned for Pam, Eric Stonestreet auditioned for Kevin and Bob Odenkirk auditioned for Michael Scott.

How different the show could have been.
