Gaviota Pier Knocked Down by Waves

Surf’s up, but now the pier is down. California surfers have been enjoying the high waves near the state beach’s Gaviota Pier, but according to the Santa Maria Times, it is now unavailable to visitors who fish and launch boats there due to the powerful tides crashing into it.

Close to 50 feet of the Gaviota Pier is now underwater since Saturday morning; the waves began to assault the pier pilings, and there she blows. One third of the pier was lost in yesterday’s incident, and there will likely be more damage to come. The waves don’t seem to be letting up and Eric Hjelstrom, the sector supervisor for the California State Parks, stated that “once one (a piling) goes, they all go down like dominos.”

No one was hurt, and no boats were docked at the time of the pier collapse. Hjelstrom has concerns about the boat hoist that still stands– the remaining parts of the pier now directly expose it to the crashing waves.

The pier was founded in 1769, when soldiers shot an apparently very tasty seagull there and named it “La Gaviota,” which is Spanish for seagull. It is known for being windy, which makes it a popular area for not only fishermen and boaters, but for surfers as well.

The collapse of the pier now sounds like more canvas for surfers to hang ten, but the beach and pier are closed for safety reasons.

Micheal Rodrigues captured the pier in a grainy video thats going viral– check it out.

The reopening of Gaviota Pier has not yet been determined.

  • Boating Accident: 1 Body Found, Search Continues

A deadly boating accident on Utah’s Lake Powell last week led to a recovery team searching through the weekend for the bodies of two victims, and one was found late on Sunday night.

The Jackman family were out in their motorboat on the lake when the driver, 59-year old Adrian Jackman, reportedly became distracted by one of the six children on board and crashed into a houseboat in the narrow channel. Jackman’s wife, 57-year old Marilyn, was killed in the accident; their daughter, Jessica, and her friend, Valerie Rae Bradshaw, were thrown from the boat and presumed dead. Bradshaw’s body was recovered using a special robot after recovery equipment experienced malfunctions in the water, which can reach depths of 400 feet. Jessica Jackman, however, is still missing. Authorities believe they are now looking for a body rather than a living person.

Friends and family were in shock at the news over the weekend, saying the Jackmans had been going to the lake for years.

“It was Marilyn’s favorite place to be in the world. She talked about it all the time,” said longtime friend Kari Wahlquist. “It was her heaven on earth, so it’s kind of ironic that’s where the angels came to take her home.”

An investigation is ongoing; Adrian Jackman, his 11-year old daughter, and one other motorboat passenger were flown to a nearby hospital for treatment but were later released. No one on the houseboat was injured.

  • Lake Powell Accident: 1 Dead, 2 Missing After Boat Crash

A lake on the border of Utah and Arizona is the site of a search today after a motorboat and houseboat crashed into one another on Thursday.

Authorities say one woman was killed in the crash and two other women are missing but presumed dead. The victim, Marilyn Jackman, was 57 years old and was the wife of the driver of the motorboat, 59-year old Adrian Jackman. His daughter, Jessica Jackman, and another woman, Valerie Rae Bradshaw, are the subjects of an extensive search of Lake Powell. He was taken to the hospital along with his 11-year old daughter and another passenger via helicopter but all three were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released.

Kane County Sheriff’ Sgt. Alan Alldredge said they received a call about the crash a little after 8 a.m. on Thursday; Jackman allegedly became distracted by the children on his boat and lost control, colliding with the houseboat. None of the passengers on the houseboat were injured.

“This time of year, the lake can get busy and these kinds of accidents, even though they’re not rare, they do have a great potential for happening out there,” Alldredge said.

Officials say the motorboat overturned after the collision, which happened in a channel about 200 yards wide.
