  • ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Cancelled By HBO

    ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Cancelled By HBO

The executive decision was highly expected, and HBO has made the final call. According to Yahoo! News, on Thursday, Jan.9, the network confirmed that the upcoming fifth season of Boardwalk Empire will conclude the series.

“It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers,” said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo. “Terry Winter has created one for the ages,” said Lombardo of the Boardwalk Empire front runner.

Winter, highly lauded for his writing expertise with The Wolf of Wall Street, premiered the serial drama on September 19, 2010. He has had all long lineage of success with the HBO network, as he was also a writer and executive producer for the hit mob drama series The Sopranos.

In wake of the premium cable network’s announcement, Winter shared his take on their mutual decision to end the show. “We’re thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire,” said Winter. “After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion.”

The publication also reports that the decision to conclude the series appears to be directional, as the storyline may have reached a point of finality. Although the show’s ratings saw a slight decline in season four, the drop wasn’t substantial enough to cancel the series. Boardwalk Empire was still considered one of HBO’s most watched programs, ranking right alongside Game of Thrones and True Blood.

The critically acclaimed series has also garnered a number of prestigious accolades, including forty Primetime Emmy Award nominations, with seventeen wins. The series also won the Golden Globe Award for ‘Best Television Drama Series’ 2011, and two SAG Awards for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series’ in 2011 and 2012.

The HBO Network took to Twitter to publicly share the announcement with the avid Boardwalk Empire fans.

Season five is set to return sometime this fall on HBO.

  • Boardwalk Empire Renewed for Fifth and Final Season

HBO’s popular hit series Boardwalk Empire is coming to an end. The upcoming fifth season will be its last. The show’s creator Terence Winter said, “We’re thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire. After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion.”

The show takes place in 1920s and 30s Atlantic City, NJ. It features Steve Buscemi as power-hungry millionaire Nucky Thompson. The drama examines the corruption of power and politics during the prohibition era when many politicians were just as crooked as mobsters.

The show is not ending because of a lack of popularity or ratings. Although the period drama never reached the heights of The Sopranos or the critical acclaim of The Wire, it has been a steady earner for HBO and currently ranks third in the ratings to Game of Thrones and True Blood. The show has won a total of five Emmy Awards.

There are plenty of loose ends for season five to tie-up. Nucky’s brother Eli, who ratted him out to the Feds, has been sent to Chicago where he’ll meet up with the likes of Al Capone. Gillian is in prison and suffering from a nervous breakdown. Chalky will certainly look to avenge the death of his daughter. What’s to become of the evil Dr. Narcisse? How far will J. Edgar Hoover go in his war on the mob?

Winter and company will have to complete their series arc in just 12 episodes. The final season will air this fall.

  • Rose Byrne’s Pretty Kiss, Ugly Shorts

Rose Byrne’s Pretty Kiss, Ugly Shorts

Over the holidays, actress Rose Byrne spent time with her boyfriend, Bobby Cannavale, in her hometown of Sydney.

Rose is known for her roles in Bridesmaids with Kristen Wiig and The Internship with Vince Vaughn. However, her fresh look also made her a Max Factor girl between 2004 and 2006.

Her boyfriend since 2012, Cannavale has gained fame as Bobby Caffey on Third Watch and as Gyp Rosetti on the HBO series, Boardwalk Empire, for which he won the award for Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

According to E Online, the two were spotted sharing a sweet kiss together on the streets of the Australian city. In fact, the two seem to be fans of PDA as they were also seen displaying affection on the set of the upcoming Annie remake earlier in December.

But in Sydney, as beautiful as Byrne is, a “different” fashion choice was made.

We applaud her for not falling into the monotony of the itty-bitty shorts worn by many female celebrities. But these elastic waistband mommy shorts? Interesting choice, Rose. However, Bobby doesn’t seem to mind.

When Cannavale accepted his Emmy in 2013, he called Byrne the “love of my life.”

Love is blindness – to ugly shorts and all.

  • Maltese Falcon Statue Sells for $4 Million

Maltese Falcon Statue Sells for $4 Million

The bird statue used as a prop in the 1941 film noir “The Maltese Falcon” sold for a record $4 million on Monday, during an auction of famous movie props and memorabilia.

“The Maltese Falcon” was directed by John Huston, and stars Humphrey Bogart as womanizing private investigator Sam Spade, and Mary Astor as his “femme fatale” client. The Warner Bros.-produced film, based on the novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett, is considered to be highly influential in the genre of film noir, which is a highly stylized crime drama, typically involving bad attitudes and sexual motivations.

Also sold during the Bonhams New York-hosted auction, which netted over $6 million, was the Buick from “Casablanca,” as well as costumes worn by Viven Leigh, Clark Gable, Bette Davis and Cary Grant.

    Check out the 1941 trailer:

The Maltese Falcon statue itself netted $4,085,000. Dr. Catherine Williamson, director of entertainment memorabilia for Bonhams New York, commented, “The spectacular price achieved reflects the statuette’s tremendous significance. The Maltese Falcon is arguably the most important movie prop ever, and is central to the history of cinema.” The auction was the first sale held after a partnership between Bonhams and Turner Classic Movies.

The introductory text of “The Maltese Falcon,” appearing after the film’s opening credits reads:

In 1539 the Knight Templars of Malta, paid tribute to Charles V of Spain, by sending him a Golden Falcon encrusted from beak to claw with rarest jewels, but pirates seized the galley carrying this priceless token and the fate of the Maltese Falcon remains a mystery to this day.

The story then follows Bogart as a private detective, and his dealings with three unscrupulous treasure hunters, all of whom are competing to acquire a jewel-encrusted falcon statuette.”The Maltese Falcon” has been repeatedly named as one of the greatest films of all time, and was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 1989.

Incidentally, for any Boardwalk Empire fans reading, the character Richard Harrow, who is played by British actor Jack Huston, who is the nephew of Angelica Huston, who is the daughter of “The Maltese Falcon” director John Huston, may or may not die at the end of the season 4 finale. Small world.

  • “Boardwalk Empire” To Be “Office Space” Reunion

“Boardwalk Empire” has announced they’ll be bringing on some fresh blood for the fourth season, and it’s none other than “Office Space” actor Ron Livingston. He’ll be joining co-star Stephen Root, who already plays a Department of Justice investigator on the show.

While details are scarce for the moment, it looks like Livingston will be playing a wealthy Jersey transplant who gets involved with Gillian Darmody, played with sexy insanity by Gretchen Moll. It’s also rumored that the show will jump forward a bit in time for the upcoming season to take place in 1924, when J. Edgar Hoover famously took over as head of the FBI and gangsters like Al Capone–whose presence on the show has so far been overshadowed by the bigger personalities–began making a name for themselves. One juicy rumor about the fourth season is that Agent Van Alden (played with precision by Michael Shannon) will be going even further rogue and joining Capone’s crew.

The introduction of new characters is always welcome on shows like this one, where the storylines can become repetitive otherwise, but after the shocking ending of season three, it will be nice to see some of the old favorite characters come into new territory.
