  • Katy Perry Reaches 50 Million Twitter Followers

Katy Perry has had a big week in music. The singer not only swept the no. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with hit “Dark Horse,” the beauty just earned herself over 50 million Twitter followers. The whopping follower number contributes to her title of most followed artist on Twitter.

So what does it take to be the most followed musician on Twitter? Perry recently came into a Twitter following of over 50,055,293 and growing.

Perry took over for most followed artist on Twitter last November when her follower amount grew larger than the recently arrested Justin Bieber.

The singer took to twitter to announce the great news saying, “Oh yeah AND we grew to 50 million Katycats! Eh, regular day at the office.”

The other top-ranking artist on Twitter include Justin Bieber at 49 million, Lady Gaga 41 million Britney Spears at 35 million and Rihanna at 34 million. Wondering where the Queen Bey sits with Twitter followers? She’s at about 13 million.

It’s really no surprise Perry landed the coveted spot since she earned 18 million followers in 2013. That crazy amount of followers made her the top follower-earning artist that year.

Will the woman ever stop? Probably not since she cleverly uses her twitter as a way to get her new album out and fans involved with promises of retweets.

The singer was also declared as the fastest female artist to reach 25 top 10s, out-running Madonna. Rihanna is also the second artist to garner 25 top 10s in a matter of just eight years. Her first chart topping record was “Pon De Replay,” which as released in 2005.“Monster” is calculated as Rihanna’s 45th record to actually make the Billboard Hot 100. She and Mariah Carey are tied with 45 Hot 100 entries.

Billboard editorial director, Bill Werde, took to Twitter to personally congratulate the “Love the Way You Lie” singer for such a notable accomplishment.

She re-tweeted his post, and took a moment to thank her fans, whom she affectionately refers to as the “Navy.” The “Where Have You Been” singer showed expressed her gratitude by thanking fans for helping her achieve such an incredible feat.

  • Lorde Takes No. 1 Spot From Miley Cyrus

Lorde Takes No. 1 Spot From Miley Cyrus

New “it girl” in the music world, Lorde, leaps to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her hit, “Royals.” Say bye bye to Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” since it’s no longer holding that hot spot after two weeks.

Our friends at Billboard dug into the numbers on the new hit song.

“”Royals” crowns the Hot 100 (3-1) with top Airplay Gainer honors for the first time. It pushes 6-4 on Radio Songs with a 22% lift to 128 million in all-format audience, according to Nielsen BDS. “Royals” remains atop Digital Songs for a second week (294,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and gains by 12% on Streaming Songs (to 6.1 million U.S. streams, according to BDS) despite dipping 4-5. The track tops the Hot Rock Songs chart for a fifth week.”

Check out her hit video here.

What’s even cooler about Lorde claiming the top spot is her age. The new music icon is only 16-she doesn’t turn 17 for another month! But believe it or not, Stevie Wonder holds the record for the youngest chart topper among solo acts. Wonder was only 13 years old when “Fingertips-Pt 2” claimed the hot no. 1 spot the week of Aug. 10, 1963.

As far as the ladies are concerned, Little Peggy March was just a mere 15 years-old when “I Will Follow Him” hit the beautiful no. 1 spot on April 27, 1963.

  • Billboard’s Hot 100 Now Takes Into Account YouTube Views

Billboard’s Hot 100 Now Takes Into Account YouTube Views

The Billboard Hot 100 chart, a longstanding signifier of what’s popular in pop music, has received a retooling for the modern age.

Starting now, YouTube views are now an official metric in determining what songs hit the Hot 100 chart.

“Billboard is now incorporating all official videos on YouTube captured by Nielsen’s streaming measurement, including Vevo on YouTube, and user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio into the Hot 100 and the Hot 100 formula-based genre charts – Hot Country Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, R&B Songs, Rap Songs, Hot Latin Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Dance/Electronic Songs – to further reflect the divergent platforms for music consumption in today’s world,” says Billboard.

That means that what you’re seeing on the Hot 100 chart is now based on digital sales, physical sales, radio play, internet streaming, and now YouTube views.

The consequences of this decision are immediately apparent, as the Billboard Hot 100 chart’s number one song is now Baauer’s “Harlem Shake.” The new trove of YouTube streaming data drove “Harlem Shake” to the #1 spot on the list in its debut week.

Billboard notes that the new YouTube data had an impact on other songs like “Gangnam Style” jumping from # 48 to #26 and Rihanna’s “Stay” making the leap from #57 to #3.

“This announcement marks a big step in accurately reflecting how music lovers are finding their new favorite songs. we hope this news will excite our users, who have helped us discover some of the biggest stars and songs of the past seven years,” says YouTube.
