  • Selena Gomez Steals Billboard ‘Chart Topper’ Crown From Iggy Azalea, Album ‘Revival’ Still Going Strong

Selena Gomez Steals Billboard ‘Chart Topper’ Crown From Iggy Azalea, Album ‘Revival’ Still Going Strong

American singer and actress Selena Gomez has successfully clinched the top spot of Billboard’s Chart Topper this year.

According to a report, Gomez, 23, will be handed the award at the annual Women in Music event, which will take place on Dec. 11, at the Cipriani Midtown in New York City.

The Chart Topper award provides recognition to artists who have achieved “major career milestones” on Billboards charts all throughout the year.

The “Come and Get It” singer reached the top of the Billboard 200 earlier this month with her album Revival, which managed to sell more than 117,000 equivalent album units during its first week.

Meanwhile, her single “Good for You” featuring A$AP Rocky has become Gomez’s fastest ever platinum seller and highest-charting single for Billboard Hot 100. The single has also been at the pinnacle of the Top 40 list for three weeks already.

“In the last few months, Selena has broken onto the scene as an adult, and come into her own as an artist with the success of Revival,” said the co-president and chief creative officer of Guggenheim Media’s Entertainment Group, Janice Min.

Currently, Gomez has now sold a total of almost 6.7 million album units, and over 22 million sales for her singles.

The Texas native recently thanked her fans because of Revival’s huge success.

“I just wanna say thank you to all you guys for the past few weeks,” she told her 34 million followers on Twitter. “Reminds me of why I do what I do!”

The recipient of Billboard’s Chart Topper award last year was Iggy Azalea, after her single “Fancy” surpassed Lil’ Kim’s as the longest-leading single in chart history.

Other awardees in this year’s Women in Music event include Lady Gaga as Woman of the Year, and Brittany Howard as Powerhouse artist, among others.

  • Selena Gomez Clinches Top Spot On U.S. Chart With ‘Revival’ Album

Selena Gomez Clinches Top Spot On U.S. Chart With ‘Revival’ Album

Just last week, Selena Gomez reached the top of the Billboard 200 Chart with her album Revival, which sold 117,000 equivalent album units in the week ending on Oct. 15.

A new report, however, states that the 23-year-old singer has reached her highest ranking on the Billboard Artist 100, since cracking the list more than a year ago. Gomez reportedly made a jump from 9th place to 2nd to reach her highest rank in her 55th week on the list. The jump was primarily the result of Gomez’ latest album selling 85,000 copies. This has boosted her ratings by 182 percent, and contributed 65% of her total Artist 100 points. Gomez sent a tweet to her followers and fans to express her gratitude for supporting her.

“I just wanna say thank you to all you guys for the past few weeks. Reminds me of why I do what I do!” she said.

Meanwhile, Canadian singer and songwriter The Weeknd has returned to No. 1 on the Artist 100, led by “The Hills”, which sits at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100. His eight weeks at the top of the list is only second to Taylor Swift’s 31 trips to the weekly rankings’ summit.

The Artist 100 list ranks artists based on Billboard’s other charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, Top Album Sales, and Social 50. Billboard then uses these statistics and combines them with album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming, and social media popularity to come up with the top artists of the week.

Also included in this week’s Artist 100 are Drake, who slides from the top spot to No. 3, Swift goes down one level from 3 to 4, and The Game re-enters the top 5 with his new album The Documentary 2.

  • Jerry Seinfeld Is No. 1 On Billboard Thanks To A Rap ‘Album About Nothing’

Comedian Jerry Seinfield and rapper Wale might be the oddest odd couple out there, but their collaboration “The Album About Nothing” is No.1 on Billboard this week.

The album is the American rapper’s fourth studio album and the third album inspired by Seinfield’s trademark observational comedy. Wale’s Mixtape About Nothing was released in 2007 and was followed by More About Nothing in 2010.

And as the title playfully hints, Wales new release is still heavily inspired by the TV legend. The album still includes dialogue from the trailblazing series and all 14 cuts in the album starts with “The,” just like every episode in the comedy. The cover art is also reminiscent of the Seinfield logo.

Seinfield doesn’t sing in the album though, but acts as its “narrator” by offering some sharp and insightful remarks on every track.

“He laid the foundation of most of the songs, so in the concept of the album, he’s the other voice,” Wale explained.

Even with Seinfield’s collaboration, Wale’s fourth offering goes to some pretty dark places. In it, the 31-year-old rapper shares his feelings about his cousin’s death and a former girlfriend’s miscarriage.

“That was a tough period for me. It was a struggle for me after those incidents. Everything almost happened at once,” Wale admitted. He said he turned to drugs after falling into a depression over those events.

But how did Wale, a self-confessed big Seinfield fan, convince the comedian to work on his album? He was lucky enough to meet Seinfield’s wife Jessica.

“She’s a big hip-hop fan and of my music,” Wale revealed about the cookbook author. “She was the middle man on a lot of things because Jerry is super busy. He’s not an easy person to reach. But she was able to put it all together.”

The strange friendship that developed between the two is certainly bearing fruit. Album About Nothing debuted at No.1 and according to Billboard, has already sold “100,000 equivalent album units.” It’s followed by the soundtrack of Furious 7.

  • Azealia Banks Wants To F**k President Obama, Rapper Backtracks Amid Uproar

There are some comments that are just too shocking, even if it comes from Azealia Banks.

The outspoken rapper graces the latest cover of Billboard and as expected, came out with some really juicy one-liners in the accompanying interview where she revealed her sexual conquests and fantasies.

The singer-songwriter confessed to sleeping with her security guards and to having sex with her female friends.

“It’s a proximity thing,” Banks said. “It’s why I am going to call my next record ‘Business and Pleasure,’ because I’m always mixing the two.

But that confession wasn’t nearly as shocking as her answers to the inevitable political questions. And Banks had a lot, maybe even too much, to say about POTUS.

“He’s so fine. Those big-ass white teeth and ears hanging off his head?” she described the president before adding “Oh my god, I want to f*** the president.”That comment didn’t fly so well with readers and shocked even those who were already expecting something outrageous from her. The firestorm that erupted on social media over her statement wasn’t surprising, but Banks backtracking is.

While she’s normally defensive and would stand by her other comments, the Harlem-raised rapper actually expressed regret over her comments on President Obama. “Omg I was totally just joking and being silly in billboard about the prez I wasn’t actually being forreal,” Banks tweeted on Friday. “I really wish I could take it back. #Geministruggle.”

The rapper is already known for her eyebrow-raising comments. Just recently she was embroiled in another controversy when she was quoted as saying that she hates everything about America.

“I hate everything about this country. Like, I hate fat white Americans,” she said in her Playboy interview. “All the people who are crunched in the middle of America, the real fat and meat of America, are these racist conservative white people who live on their farms,” she further expounded.

  • Chrissy Teigen And Ludacris Will Host 2015’s Billboard Music Awards

Hold on to your seats, gentlemen. Supermodel Chrissy Teigen will host this year’s Billboard Music Awards.

The 29-year-old bombshell and music aficionado will grace the stage as the event’s presenter alongside superstar rapper Ludacris. The annual ceremony will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, showcasing this year’s hottest musical acts and the biggest and brightest stars.

John Legend’s wife says she is highly qualified to host the event. “If my extensive collection of all 53 ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ compilations is any indication, I am both qualified and honored to join Ludacris in hosting this amazing show that spotlights the best music and artists of the year,” the model said.

“I had so much fun hosting the Billboard Music Awards last year and I can’t wait to be back!” said 37-year-old Ludacris, who might have enjoyed last year’s Billboard Music Awards only too well because of Jennifer Lopez’s sizzling double acts.

Last year’s event was held on May 18, also at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas.  JLo was presented with the Icon Award for her years of successful work in the music industry. Other big winners during last year’s awards night included Justin Timberlake, who won eight grand slam awards, including Top Male Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Duo/ Group and Top Rock Artist. Katy Perry won Top Female Artist while smash hit single “Blurred Lines” earned Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell four trophies: Top Hot 100 Song, Top Digital Song, Top Radio Song and Top R&B Song. Thicke also performed his single, “Get Her Back” during the show.

This year’s finalists will be announced on Tuesday, April 7, on Good Morning America.

The 2015 Billboard Music Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, May 17 at 8pm.

  • Meghan Trainor Knocks Taylor Swift Out Of #1 Spot

Meghan Trainor has seen huge success in the last year or so.

Her breakaway hit, “All About That Bass”, was a massive boost for her career.

The songstress just knocked Taylor Swift out of the number one spot on the Billboard chart with her first album, Title.

Meghan Trainor‘s album sold 238,000 equivalent units in the week ending Jan. 18, including 195,000 in pure album sales.

Taylor Swift’s 1989 only had 92,000 in pure album sales during the week. 1989 had been on top for 13 non consecutive weeks since its release.

“All About That Bass” didn’t just make Meghan Trainor famous. It also gave many a satire 15 minutes of fame.

The Artist 100 chart that Meghan Trainor just dominated uses data measuring album and track sales, as well as radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction. It then mixes all that info up to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Meghan Trainor has been in the top 10 for 23 straight weeks, beginning Aug. 30. During that fateful week, her ridiculously popular debut hit, “All About That Bass”, rose to No. 2 on the Hot 100.

Meghan Trainor is in good company at the top of the list. At number two is, of course, Taylor Swift and at number three would be Ed Sheeran.

    Be happy.

    Фото опубликовано Meghan Trainor (@meghan_trainor)

At four is Maroon 5, who rocketed up from number 11 since their song “Sugar” began ripping up the Digital Songs chart with 150,000 downloads sold. .

Mark Ronson sits at number five. His album, Uptown Special, debuted with 30,000 sold, and digital song sales boosted him to his status as a top Artist 100 contributor. “Uptown Funk!” was the top Digital Gainer on the Hot 100 with 400,000 units sold.

What do you think of Meghan Trainor’s rise to number one?

  • Meghan Trainor: Move Over Taylor Swift, ‘Title’ Debuts at #1

Meghan Trainor has knocked Taylor Swift out of the number one spot on the Billboard chart–a spot the ‘Shake It Off’ singer has held for 13 weeks–with the debut of her first album, ‘Title.’ The Artist 100 is the first weekly ranking dedicated to measuring artist activity across Billboard’s most influential charts.

According to Billboard, “this includes the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Top Album Sales, and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.”

It should be noted, however, that Meghan Trainor beat out Taylor Swift by a narrow margin.

‘Title’ is now said to be the strongest debut for a female pop artist since 2009, when the first album by Susan Boyle hit the Billboard charts.

Meghan Trainor, who is just 21, was recognized for her musical skills at an early age. Her official career was launched just last year, however, when ‘All About That Bass’ became a global sensation–going viral at first on YouTube.

In other Meghan Trainor news, the singer admitted recently that she and Harry Styles of One Direction recently collaborated on a love song. She chatted with Nick Grimshaw at BBC 1 on Tuesday about what may be to come.

“I wrote a song with Harry. It was unbelievable. He’s a very, very talented songwriter, I was very impressed. I was worried he’d just be a 20-year-old boy so I walked in with a prepared verse and chorus. He gave me very poetic, mature lyrics,” she said. “I was like, ‘Well, damn, Harry, you know what love is.’”

Trainor didn’t share word of when, where–or even if–the track will be released.

Right now Meghan Trainor is no doubt reeling in the sheer joy of ‘Title’ having debuted at the number one Billboard spot. How do you suppose Taylor Swift is feeling about that?

  • Jack White Nominated for Best Rock Song Grammy

Academy Award-nominated musician Jack White’s “Lazaretto” has been nominated for Best Rock Song for next year’s Grammy Awards.

The other nominations in the category include Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun,” the Black Keys’ “Fever,” Beck’s “Blue Moon” and Ryan Adams’ “Gimme Something Good.”

White was also nominated in the 2015 Grammy categories for Best Rock Performance and Best Alternative Music Album for Lazaretto. He is also nominated Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for his work on The Rise & Fall Of Paramount Records, Volume One (1917-27), alongside Susan Archie and Dean Blackwood.

White has previously been nominated for various Grammy Awards 24 times, and has won eight, so far.

Here is the video for “Lazaretto”:

A lazaretto is a quarantine facility for sea travelers, and can comprise a ship at anchor, an island or a structure on the mainland. Leper colonies were once called lazar houses, named after the story of Lazarus the Beggar.

White has stated that he partly based the album around a series of poems, plays and short stories he’d written when he was 19. He rediscovered his writings while rummaging through his attic.

Lazaretto debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 138,000 copies in its first week. Interestingly, “Lazaretto” has the world record for the fastest recording ever produced. According to White’s label Third Man Records, the first batch of seven inch singles was recorded, pressed, assembled and available for sale in three hours, 55 minutes and 21 seconds.

White, 39, shattered the standing Guinness World Record set by Swiss polka trio Vollgas Kompanie, who issued their album Live, the day after they recorded it.

White, born John Anthony Gillis, gained notoriety as the principal singer/songwriter for The White Stripes, which he formed with drummer Meg White in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan.

  • Billboard 200 Chart Will Now Factor in Streaming, Downloads

Billboard 200 Chart Will Now Factor in Streaming, Downloads

The Billboard 200, the decades-old standard for measuring the top albums in the country, is going to begin acknowledging that people use the internet to listen to music these days.

According to a report in the New York Times, in a couple weeks Billboard will unveil a new top 200 albums chart covering November 30 to December 4. This chart will, for the first time, include data from streaming and downloads – meaning services like Spotify, Beats Music, and Google Play will now help determine which artists take the top spots on a weekly basis.

Years ago, Billboard began looking at online data when compiling its Hot 100 chart and last year they even began taking YouTube views into account. But the Hot 100 measures individual songs and the Billboard 200 measures albums. It’s tricker to use data from, let’s say Spotify, to measure the success of an album – than it is to measure the success of a single track.

Apparently, Billboard has decided on a formula. From the NYT:

SoundScan and Billboard will count 1,500 song streams from services like Spotify, Beats Music, Rdio, Rhapsody and Google Play as equivalent to an album sale. For the first time, they will also count “track equivalent albums” — a common industry yardstick of 10 downloads of individual tracks — as part of the formula for album rankings on the Billboard 200.

Sounds interesting, if not a bit arbitrary. I wonder how Taylor Swift feels about all of this?

  • Alanis Morissette: Remembering “You Oughta Know”

Do you know what the number one song on the Modern Rock Tracks chart was on this day in 1995? Well, you oughta. Hard to believe it’s been almost two decades since a young girl from Canada, already known by many as the brunette from You Can’t Do That On Television, shocked radio listeners everywhere with her hard-hitting, slightly unnerving, catchy-as-hell pop tune You Oughta Know.

The song was one that if it came on in the car and you were with your mother, it would make you both feel just a little bit uncomfortable, especially that line about doing something naughty in a movie theater. But it was also so catchy, raw, and original that it was nearly impossible to change the radio dial.

Morissette seemed to write her breakthrough song using an almost out of body method. “When I was writing it, it was so subconscious. I wasn’t aware of what was coming out of me,” the 21-year-old told Billboard just before her first album Jagged Little Pill topped the charts. She added, “I’d go into the booth … and sing. I’d listen the next day and not really remember it.”

Whatever method Morissette used worked like a charm. Jagged Little Pill sold almost 15 million copies in the United States and 33 million copies worldwide. The album was nominated for nine Grammy Awards and won five. You Oughta Know won two Grammys, one for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and the other one for Best Rock Song.

The album was made up almost entirely of radio hits. Besides You Oughta Know, five other songs from Jagged Little Pill topped the charts in 1995-1996: Hand in My Pocket, Ironic, You Learn, Head over Feet, and All I Really Want. And while many people think of Morissette as the angst-filled, scored lover from You Ought Know, Head over Feet and Hand in My Pocket are sweet songs that sing of happiness and love.

Of course, the urban legend is that You Oughta Know is about Dave Coulier, Uncle Joey from Full House. The pair dated in the early 1990s, when she was just a teenager and he was in his 30s. Coulier has hinted publicly that there are a few familiar sounding lines in the tune like, “I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner.” He explained, “We had already broken up….She called and I said, ‘Hey, you know, I’m right in the middle of dinner. Can I just call you right back?’ When I heard the line, it was like, uhhh-ohhh!” Morissette has never revealed the secret.

Morissette is 40-years-old now. She’s married to rapper Mario “Souleye” Treadway, and the couple have one child named Ever. She’s still putting out albums, but it’s probably safe to say that in today’s music world, she won’t have a hit with a larger impact than You Oughta Know.

  • Ariana Grande Is Dealing With “Problems” This Week

It has been an odd week for pop singer Ariana Grande, one filled with both heartache and concern as well as historic achievement.

A few days ago, the 21-year-old songstress rushed to the bedside of her cancer-stricken grandfather.

Though the man is clearly ill, you can also tell in the images shared by Grande how happy “grandpa” is to see her.

The “Problem” singer even posted a picture of all the blankets she lovingly “bundled” around her grandfather’s “chilly feet”.

He is known as “Grandpa Grande” to fans of Ariana Grande and there have been numerous hashtags created in support of her ailing relation.

But speaking of “Problem”, the latest hit song by Grande, it represented some good news for the singer.

She made history when she became the very first pop singer to have a No. 1 U.K. single based on a combination of sales and streaming.

According to Billboard the song “Problem”, which features Australian-born rapper Iggy Azealia, sold 113,000 copies and boasted 712,000 streams.

The sales were measured by the Official Charts Company or OOC, which is responsible for the compilation of singles for the British chart.

In order to earn her spot at the top of the UK charts, Grande’s song had to be streamed for a minimum of 30 seconds. The OOC considers 100 streams the equivalent of one download sale.

While Ariana Grande seems very family-oriented in addition to her talent as a singer, there is one thing that clearly bugs her: The constant comparisons to other young female pop singers…like Miley Cyrus.

Though Grande admits to finding the comparisons “annoying”, the singer said that she tries not to think about it.

It’s true enough that the young pop diva has more than enough to think about as her hit TV show Sam & Cat is about to end.

No doubt Grande will be weighing all her options in the coming months.

  • Billboard Hitler Quote Leads to Apology

Billboard Hitler Quote Leads to Apology

In a blatant case of being completely out of touch, an Alabama Christian organization was forced to apologize this week for a billboard displaying a quote from Adolf Hitler. According to a report in the Columbus, Georgia Ledger-Enquirer, the billboard was put up in Auburn, Alabama on Friday. The sign has now been removed due to complaints and mockery from people across the U.S.

The sign depicted a multiracial group of children beside two quotes. One was a verse from the Christian Bible: “Train up a child in the way he should go. Even when he is old he will not depart from it. -Proverbs 22:6.” The other quote was a bit more provocative: “He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future. -Adolf Hitler.”

The billboard was put up by Life Savers Ministries, a Christian outreach group in Opelika, Alabama focused on preaching to needy children. The group requested the billboard be removed after the inevitable outcry began.

Exactly why Life Savers was quoting the former Fuehrer isn’t entirely clear. At first glance the Hitler quote and the following Bible verse seem to go hand-in-hand, insinuating that Christians should “train up” children to “own the youth” and therefore “gain the future.” Another interpretation, however, could be that of a warning – that Christians should “train up” children before Nazis get to them first.

Life Savers hasn’t done itself any favors with its response to the incident. The organization’s founder, James Anderegg, told the Ledger-Enquirer that the group “never intended to cause confusion.” Anderegg also stated that the Herbert Hoover quote, “Children are our most valuable resource” would have been better in place of the Hitler quote, implying that the original quote was intended to back up the Bible verse.

Whatever the message of the billboard was supposed to be, it certainly didn’t come across as intended. Twitter was filled this week with jokes and angry tweets from those sensitive to flippant holocaust references. There were also some reminders of the Hitler teapot billboard that captured headlines this time last year.

  • Kendall Jenner’s Embarrassing Billboard Moment

Kendall Jenner just doesn’t have a way with words and apparently she can’t read too well either. Kendall appeared on the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday but was having a hard time reading her lines.

She was supposed to be announcing the boy band 5 Seconds of Summer. When she began to introduce them, she started to call them One Direction instead. She caught her mistake but started laughing and giggling about it before saying the band’s real name.

Interestingly, Kendall once dated One Direction member Harry Styles.

After messing up the lines she said,

“You guys! I’m the worst reader.”

Kendall became embarrassed and later tweeted about the incident.

At first she blamed her line flubbing on not being able to see instead of not being able to read.

Then she decided it would be easier to just laugh at herself instead of defending herself.

Kendall’s mess up was a simple and honest one, but not everyone was quick to forget about it. Many people mocked her on Twitter.

Others came to her defense and focused on how good she looked at the event instead.

What did you think of Kendall’s Billboard Music Awards mess up?

  • Anna Kournikova Has Yet To Meet Enrique’s Dad Julio

Tennis star and pinup girl Anna Kournikova has been dating Latin music sensation Enrique Iglesias for 12 years. In a recent interview with Billboard, Iglesias revealed an almost unbelievable detail, Kournikova has never met Enrique’s father Julio Iglesias.

Enrique says that there is no one to blame and that he rarely sees his estranged father, who was also quite a Lothario heartthrob back in his salad days. “The last 14 years, 15 years of my life have flown by. And that’s the only way I can truly explain it. There’s no reason why — it’s not his fault, and it’s not my fault.”

The 70-year-old Julio, who is the best-selling Latin music artist ever, clearly has a complicated relationship with his son. One would think that some kind of musical collaboration between the two Latin artists would be an obvious choice, however, Julio said last year that he would never work with his son. “Singing with my son is something that would come off as very commercial. I think that he and I will never sing together. If we sing, it will be at a dinner, when he has kids and wants his kids to sing, just like my little ones do. I don’t believe in a public commercial duet between my kids and me.”

Kournikova, 32, met Enrique, 38, while working on the music video Escape in 2001. Even though they’ve been romantically linked for over a decade, neither seems all that anxious to get hitched. Enrique’s parents were divorced, and Kournikova said in an interview with Women’s Health in 2011, “Marriage isn’t important to me. I’m in a happy relationship — that’s all that matters.”

Enrique is currently out promoting his new album Sex and Love, which debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200. However, the album quickly slipped to No. 42 in its second week. Even still, the Latin heartthrob isn’t worried about the album’s sales, especially considering his last album Euphoria (2010) took 18 months to produce two top five singles.

  • Frozen Soundtrack Still No.1 on Billboard Charts

Disney’s Oscar-nominated, massively popular “Frozen” soundtrack is still the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 94,000 copies last week, for a total of four weeks now spent at the top position. (Number 2 belongs to the “2014 Grammy Nominees” compilation album.) This is huge for the animated film, as the last soundtrack to spend four weeks at the top was 2003’s “Bad Boys II.”

To date, “Frozen” has now sold 863,000 copies. It has not sold less than 80,000 in over two months. If “Frozen” spends a fifth week at No. 1, (which seems likely, with the success of the film’s new sing-a-long shows hitting theaters), it will be the longest-running soundtrack at No.1 since 1996’s “Waiting to Exhale.”

The soundtrack features original songs from songwriting couple Robert and Kristen Lopez, who’ve composed for The Book of Mormon and Avenue Q. Tony award winner Idina Menzel sings on the popular hit “Let It Go” – which is nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. (The film is also nominated for Best Animated Feature, which it won for at the Golden Globes.)

The success of the soundtrack is no doubt supported by 1,000 sing-a-long shows that have opened up across the country, as well as the massive critical success since its Thanksgiving debut (the largest debut ever for a Disney film.) The film stars Kristen Bell as Anna, a fearless optimist who sets off on an epic journey across the snow-covered kingdom to find her sister, Elsa (voiced my Menzel). Fans can watch Menzel perform “Let It Go” at the Academy Awards on March 2nd.

  • Royals Billboard Is Brilliant And Creative

The Kansas City Royals sure know how to promote themselves.

Last year the Royals had two billboards, one with James Shields pitching to the partner billboard of Salvador Perez catching the ball – which was ripping the vinyl off the billboard.

This year’s billboard showcases outfielder Alex Gordon sliding across the billboard to a base (which base, I don’t know), taking the vinyl of the billboard with him. (They really like ripping the vinyl off their billboards in Kansas City.)

The Royals took to their Twitter to show off the new billboard.

And of course there were many fans of the creative billboard.

In regards to the star of the billboard, Gordon will no longer be at the top spot of the roster. After the Royals acquired Norichika Aoki, who will bat first, Gordon was moved to the fifth spot, batting after Omar Infante, Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler.

“You never know what’s going to happen with injuries (or) how people are going to play. We’re going to iron all that out in spring training. But as of right now (Aoki) looks like a solid leadoff hitter. He’s not going to strike out — I did a lot and that’s not typical of a leadoff hitter. He gets on base, he walks, he slaps the ball around. He’s kind of the typical leadoff guy,” said Gordon.

“Hitting later in the order, I’m still going to try to see pitches, but my job is to drive guys in and maybe hit with more power. I’ve hit there before and hopefully, I won’t forget how,” Gordon added.

The move to the fifth spot doesn’t seem to bother the outfielder. “Baseball is not an easy game. I’ve experienced that firsthand. What are you going to do? Move on and hopefully learn from it. Hopefully, it won’t happen this year.”

  • Billy Joel Marks 50 Years as Performer

Billy Joel Marks 50 Years as Performer

Billy Joel will meet a benchmark this year in his career, as 2014 will be the star’s 50th year performing.

It has been nearly two decades since the last time Joel released a new album, but the musician is still headlining sell-out shows; Madison Square Garden recently named a new “franchise” for their company, “Billy Joel at the Garden,” which began running out of tickets within minutes. “Billy Joel at the Garden” is an unlimited-show tour (that began January 27) in which the star will perform concerts at the Garden and other venues across the nation.

Tickets for the nine shows already scheduled at Madison Square Garden were claimed in a record-breaking amount of time. Passes to watch Joel at the other US venues – including Chicago’s Wrigley Field, the Nationals Stadium in Washington, and the three-night Hollywood Bowl – sold-out rapidly, as well.

Joel, 64, says that he got his start as a musician by playing in a piano bar and performing with various bands throughout his teenage and early-adult years.

The “Piano Man” does admit, however, that not many people had much faith in his determination and desire to earn a living while making music.

Joel related to Billboard that when he would say, “‘I’m gonna be a musician,’” people would respond by telling him, “‘You’re crazy, you’re gonna starve, you’re gonna be poor, a drug addict, go to jail, you’ll never make it, there’s too much competition, it’s a terrible business, etc.’”

However, one person made a difference in the aspiring star’s life, as well as in the fate of American pop culture.

According to Joel, “My chorus teacher in high school said, ‘You’ve got what it takes to be a really good professional musician, you should consider it.’ That was an epiphany for me.”

While music – on most any type of instrument – came naturally to Joel, he says that being a “rock star,” did not; in fact, he attributes the majority of his success in the industry to the singer/songwriter phenomenon that was happening when he was first pursuing a career as a musician.

“I started just concentrating on songwriting when I was abut 20; I’d been in rock bands six or seven years, kinda got that out of my system. I said, ‘Okay, you ain’t gonna be a rock star, you don’t look like a rock star, it probably ain’t gonna happen. So what you should do is write songs and maybe other people will do your songs.’ I just felt like I had something to write, and the advice I got from the music business people that I knew was, ‘Okay, now you should probably make an album of your songs.’ Get a record deal, make an album. This just happened to coincide with the era of the singer/songwriter. You had James Taylor, Jackson Browne, JD Souther, Joni Mitchell, singer/songwriters. So I got a record deal—a terrible record deal—made a record, and then the advice I got was, ‘Now you should go out on the road and perform and support the album.’ There I was, still 20 years old, so I went out on tours, didn’t get paid nothin’, but played, and it kinda turned into this ‘Billy Joel pop star/rock star guy,’ which to this day is still kinda funny to me, because that’s not at all what I set out to do. I’m not gonna disown it, it’s the best job I ever had, but it ended up happening kind of randomly.”

Joel’s first album, Cold Spring Harbor, was released in 1971, and met with a disappointing amount of success. However, Harbor would later become the prologue to a staggeringly-successful career; Piano Man, Joel’s sophomore record released in 1973, earned the musician a Top 20 single, landing Joel on the musical map.

Billy would go on to make numerous albums throughout the next three decades, and earn many different honors denoting success in his career at events such as the Grammy Awards and the People’s Choice Awards.

In 1999, Billy Joel’s all-time record sales surpassed $100 million, an achievement few musical artists are ever able to attain; in December 2013, the singer was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors, a title that is reserved for an elite, select-few number of professionals who have experienced monumental success.

In addition to the national “tour” Joel is embarking upon, he also recently appeared in a televised special on Showtime, Billy Joel: A Matter of Trust – The Bridge to Russia, a documentary about Joel that depicts the frenzy that surrounded his 1987 trip to the former Soviet Union. The film premiered on Showtime on January 31.

Katy Perry performed her No. 1 hit “Dark Horse” at the Grammys this past Sunday.

Quite a few YouTube users had a lot to say about the performance.

“The question we should ask ourselves is: who’s idea was to make this performance? Katy perry is a pop icon. shes the faces of a corporation and the mainstream music industry. people like her barely act on their own. there is always a team of experts telling her how to live her life, what to sing, and what to perform. shes just the face of an enormous corporate effort. there are people behind the scenes here. we shouldnt act like katy perry is author of what she does because she probably isnt,” said one user.

Another continued to say, “F****n haters……GET A F***N LIFE!…..Katty’s performance was awesome! it was one of the best at the Grammy’s…the bass beat was amazing, the dancing was even more amazing……KEEP IT UP KATTY! One of the best songs ever created, and I’m not even a fan…..”

  • ‘Frozen’ Movie Exceeds Box Office And Billboard Expectations

‘Frozen’ Movie Exceeds Box Office And Billboard Expectations

Animated film “Frozen,” which was released in the U.S. on November 27, has had a very successful week in the box office all the while surpassing other Disney films.

The wintry film has earned over $300 million nationwide and $642 million worldwide, exceeding other popular films such as: :”Toy Story 3,” “Shrek 2 and 3,” and “Finding Nemo.”

During January 3 to 5, the movie topped $298 million in North America alone.

The 1994 film “The Lion King” is the only other film that has reached this milestone, so now Disney celebrates the prestigious achievement of two movies. However, “Frozen” still falls second runner-up to its predecessor.

On Tuesday, the animated film received not one but two “Best Animated Feature” awards at the North Texas Film Critics Association’s Awards ceremony and the Oklahoma Film Critics Circle Awards ceremony.

What is even more shocking is that the “Frozen” soundtrack is now NO. 1 on the Billboard 200, beating Beyoncé’s self-titled album, “Beyoncé.”

    According to Billboard.com:

““Frozen” is just the fourth animated film soundtrack to reach No. 1 since the Billboard 200 became a regularly published weekly chart in 1956. It follows Jack Johnson’s “Curious George” (2006), and Disney’s “Pocahontas” (1995) and “The Lion King” (1994).” (image)

It originally made is mark at No. 18 the second week of December, but the soundtrack continues to grow in sales because of its strong stance in the box office.

Overall, “Frozen” ranks fourth place as the highest-grossed film of 2013!

“Frozen” has definitely had an outstanding week and it seems as though people are enjoying the soundtrack or already in search to obtain movie paraphernalia of their own.

So, I’ve yet to see the movie. Have you? How was it?

  • Bruno Mars Named Most Illegally Downloaded Artist of 2013

Bruno Mars had an amazing 2013. First his Unorthodox Jukebox album topped the domestic and international Billboard charts. Then his singles,”When I was Your Man,” “Locked Out of Heaven” and “Treasure” remained on top of the 100 single charts for months. Mars concluded his year by being named Billboard’s Artist of the Year.

In addition to all that success, his concerts sold out all across the United States, he won several major music awards, and he received multiple nominations for the 2014 Grammy Awards. As Mars leaves 2013 behind, he won one more music honor this week:  most illegally downloaded artist of 2013.

According to London based data analysis firm, MusicMetric, Bruno Mar’s songs and album were downloaded 5.8 million times in 2013. Bit Torrent was the site MusicMetric used to gather its data for the study. Bit Torrent is the most popular peer-to-peer based file sharing program in the North America. It allows people to share programs, music and videos through downloads. MusicMetric focused on Bit Torrent’s traffic to form its data to analyze.

MusicMetric narrowed down their study to 20 artist who were downloaded the most in 2013 on Bit Torrent sites and programs. Besides Mars, others artists who topped this study include Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk and Flo Rida. The typical traffic breakdown of downloads for each artist were 70% of their total downloads came from people downloading full albums and 30% were from individual singles’ downloads.

Despite the huge numbers, Musicmetric claims that Bit Torrent’s downloading is at a steady decline due to the increasing availability of streaming music. According to Billboard,”BitTorrent’s share of total daily traffic in North America had fallen to 11.1% from 18.9% in the second half of 2011.”

Here’s how many downloads each of the top 20 most-downloaded artists of 2013 received, according to MusicMetric’s study:

    1 Bruno Mars, 5,783,556
    2 Rihanna, 5,414,166
    3 Daft Punk, 4,212,361
    4 Justin Timberlake, 3,930,185

  • Bruno Mars Excited To Be Billboard’s Top Artist of 2013

Bruno Mars has been named by Billboard as this year’s Artist of the Year. Bruno beat the likes of Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and Rihanna for the top honor, thanks to his 2012 “Unorthodox Jukebox” which is the 2nd bestselling album after Timberlake’s “20/20 Experience”. To date, the album has sold about 1.8 million copies.

‘I love to create music. And that’s all I was trying to do with that album,’ said Mars. ‘I’m just happy that there’s some people out there that like it.’

Mars’ top hits this year included “When I Was Your Man”, “Locked Out of Heaven” and a top five hit, “Treasure”. These are the hits that kept him in the top 20 list every week since their release.

The 28-year-old artist could not hide his excitement after Billboard announced the news Friday that the pop crooner will be the year’s topmost artist. “It’s flattering. It’s just an honor,” Mars said in an interview. “I’m proud to be a part of this whole team that I have.”

Mars thinks that the reason fans have resonated with his music is because it is “relatable”. “You know when you eat that food and it’s filling that void you were missing,” he said of his music.

Other notable winners in the list included Justin Timberlake who topped the R&B charts, Florida Georgia Line who ruled Country and Imagine Dragon – they reigned over the Rock charts. Others include Taylor Swift who is this year’s top female artist and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis who tops the group category.

Mars had quite a steller year. His hit “Locked Out of Heaven,” has also been nominated for the Grammy’s prestigious Record and Song of the Year awards.
