  • Microsoft Releases Results of Independent Transparency Report

Microsoft Releases Results of Independent Transparency Report

Microsoft has released the results of an independent transparency report on the company’s handling of harassment and discrimination policies.

Following a successful shareholder resolution, Microsoft’s board ordered an independent review of its harassment and discrimination policies, including how it handled allegations against Bill Gates. The firm that handled the review, ArentFox Schiff LLP, has completed its work, and Microsoft has released the results.

The report shows that Microsoft does a good job overall in terms of its policies and procedures:

Microsoft has robust policies, trainings, and complaint and investigation procedures addressing the issues of gender discrimination and sexual harassment, and has made meaningful efforts to make improvements in these areas during the period covered by this Project. Our review revealed that the Company strives to follow best practices in these areas, and espouses a dedication to continual improvement.

Nonetheless, the firm did find areas where the company could improve, especially in handling cases sooner. The firm references the company’s so-called “golden boys,” a group of executives that seemingly were given a free pass on inappropriate behavior because they are viewed as some of the company’s most valuable executives.

First, that there is and has been a perception among some employees that the Company tolerates and to some degree protects high performing senior executives who may be engaging in inappropriate conduct. Second, due to the volume of complaints against these Corporate Vice Presidents, there was at least a perception and a degree of evidence that they were engaging in inappropriate conduct toward female employees that could have been addressed earlier than it was. Third, although multiple people from HR, GER, ERIT, and WIT had knowledge of various allegations against these executives, it did not seem that any one of them had all of the knowledge of all of the allegations, which may have been useful in addressing the situation earlier. We have made some recommendations to address these observations below.

Interestingly, the report did not shed any new light on the allegations against Gates, nor did it add anything to Microsoft’s own internal investigation. This would seem to support the findings and results of Microsoft’s original investigation.

For its part, Microsoft has promised to implement the suggestions in the report in an effort to shore up the areas where it has fallen short:

ArentFox has completed its work and has provided the Board with a report detailing its findings and recommendations. In addition, the Microsoft management team has prepared an implementation plan that addresses all the recommendations in the ArentFox report. In many cases, the recommendations build on and extend work already in progress. The Board has thoroughly reviewed the ArentFox report, and it has approved the specific actions in the implementation plan.

“Cultivating a culture where everyone is empowered to do meaningful work and can thrive is our greatest responsibility at Microsoft,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “The Board of Directors has taken this investigation seriously and the resulting comprehensive report outlines important areas where we can continue to improve, as well as progress we’ve made. The Board of Directors and our senior leaders are fully committed to this implementation plan as we continually work to close the gap between our espoused culture and the lived experience of our employees.”

Gates Foundation Likely to Shut Down in 25 Years

Bill Gates has shared his thoughts on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, revealing it will likely shut down in 25 years.

The Gates Foundation is “a nonprofit fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world.” Founded in 2000, the foundation is involved in addressing some of the biggest challenges facing mankind. The foundation has benefited greatly from Gates’ wealth, with Bill Gates recently donating $20 billion to it.

Despite its stature in the philanthropic community, Gates sees the foundation shutting down in the next couple of decades.

“The goal for the foundation is to run for another 25 years,” Gates said at the 2022 Forbes 400 Philanthropy Summit.

At the same time, Gates emphasized the foundation’s goals in the remaining time it has.

“Try and bring infectious disease, or all of the diseases that make the world inequitable, to bring those largely to an end, either through eradication or getting them down to very low levels,” he added.

By the time the Gates Foundation comes to an end, Bill Gates would be 91, and Melinda would be 83. It’s clear the two don’t want to trust the foundation’s future to someone else. Given how involved they have been in the foundation, it’s understandable they wouldn’t want to risk it going in a direction they would not have agreed with.

Bill Gates: Crypto and NFTs ‘100% Based on Greater Fool Theory’

Don’t count Bill Gates as a fan of cryptocurrency or NFTs, with the tech icon calling them “100% based on greater fool theory.”

The crypto market is in the midst of a massive downturn, one that has seen billions wiped from the ledgers. While many are looking at this as a buying opportunity, Gates is not impressed with crypto or NFTs, according to CNBC. Gates referred to both, but especially NFTs, as being “based on fool theory,” meaning the value on an already overvalued asset only goes up when enough investors want them.

“I’m used to asset classes … like a farm where they have output, or like a company where they make products,” Gates said, regarding NFTs.

On the topic of crypto, Gates said: “I’m not involved in that. I’m not long or short any of those things.”

Interestingly, Gates comments come at a time when NFTs are increasingly gaining mainstream support. Salesforce recently unveiled its own NFT platform, NFT Cloud, as a way for companies to mint and sell NFTs. The company emphasized their intention of making their platform a trusted marketplace, one that would be environmentally friendly, addressing two of the biggest critiques of the burgeoning tech.

Only time will tell if the crypto market will recover, and if NFTs will continue to gain steam. In the meantime, it doesn’t sound like Gates will be investing in either.

  • Microsoft’s Alex Kipman Resigning Following Allegations, Raising Questions About Nadella

Microsoft’s Alex Kipman Resigning Following Allegations, Raising Questions About Nadella

One of Microsoft’s “golden boy” executives, Alex Kipman, is resigning following a scathing report on inappropriate behavior and misconduct.

Kipman was once one of the company’s most powerful executives, co-creator of the HoloLens, and tasked with overseeing Microsoft’s mixed reality endeavors. Business Insider wrote a report in late May detailing some of Kipman’s exploits and his inappropriate behavior. In the wake of that report, VP of Cloud and AI Scott Guthrie sent an email to employees saying Kipman would be leaving the company.

According to Insider, Kipman had a long history of inappropriate conduct and sexual harassment, racking up dozens of incidents. According to Insider’s sources, Kipman watched what was labeled “VR porn” in the presence of his team, including female team members. In another incident, Kipman allegedly kept rubbing a woman’s shoulders, despite her appearing visibly uncomfortable.

Kipman’s reputation was so well-established that managers reportedly told employees not to leave women alone with him. One executive even credited the pandemic with making life more bearable, in terms of working for Kipman.

“The best thing that happened, sadly, was the pandemic,” the executive said. “So we never had to interact with him in person.”

Guthrie’s email said that Kipman will remain for a couple of months to help the team’s transition during its reorganization. The email said nothing about the allegations against Kipman, only saying he was leaving “the company to pursue other opportunities.”

The handling of the Kipman affair raises some uncomfortable questions for Microsoft in general, and CEO Satya Nadella in particular. Nadella has taken a very public stand against toxic culture, vowing to help root it out and change Microsoft from within. Despite those claims, Insider’s sources say Nadella wasn’t inclined to directly address Kipman, as outlined in this excerpt:

A former executive who brought similar concerns to Nadella characterized his approach as: What’s something we can do to make it go away without making hard decisions? “He doesn’t like conflict,” the person said. Misconduct is “not something he wants to hear about,” said another executive who worked directly with Nadella. “If he does, he wants someone else to go fix it.”

The problems within the company have reached the point that the board ordered a review of its handling of various investigations, including the one surrounding Bill Gates. The board hoped to provide transparency about “the effectiveness of the company’s workplace sexual harassment and gender discrimination policies, training, and related policies.”

In the meantime, employees within the company are growing tired of things not changing.

“The gilding on the reputation of the culture change has worn off,” a woman who works directly with Nadella told Insider. “It’s actually quite tarnished.”

Bill Gates and Elon Musk Are At It Again, This Time Over Climate Change

Bill Gates and Elon Musk are at it again, taking aim at each other over climate change.

Gates and Musk have a well-established history of taking jabs at each other over a variety of topics. The last round was instigated by Gates in an interview with a French news outlet, in which he said he donates more to climate change efforts than Musk.

“Tesla’s done a fantastic job; I give a lot more money to climate change than @elonmusk or anyone else,” Gates said. “He’s (Elon) done a great job, but somebody shorting the stock doesn’t slow him down or hurt him in any way.”

Musk’s reply was short and sweet:

Microsoft Orders Review of Harassment and Discrimination Policies, Including Bill Gates’ Case

Microsoft’s board has ordered a review of the company’s handling of sexual harassment and discrimination investigations, including one involving Bill Gates.

Like many large companies, Microsoft has faced increased pressure in recent years to do more to combat sexual harassment and gender discrimination. These calls reached a crescendo after new details emerged about Bill Gates’ behavior with female subordinates.

Microsoft’s board has ordered a third-party review of its policies, including how it handled the investigation into Gates’ conduct.

Microsoft hopes the review will address a number of areas, including providing transparency about “the effectiveness of the company’s workplace sexual harassment and gender discrimination policies, training, and related policies.”

The report will also shed light on the number of harassment cases that have been investigated, as well as how they were resolved. It will also summarize the results of any investigations into senior leadership, or the board of directors, and what action was taken, including the investigation into Gates. The report will also look at what action was taken to hold employees accountable for bad behavior.

“Our culture remains our number one priority and the entire Board appreciates the critical importance of a safe and inclusive environment for all Microsoft employees,” said Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s Chairman and CEO. “We’re committed not just to reviewing the report but learning from the assessment so we can continue to improve the experiences of our employees. I embrace this comprehensive review as an opportunity to continue to get better”.

  • Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures Leads Investment in Ag Robots

Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures Leads Investment in Ag Robots

Breakthrough Energy Ventures has led a $53 million Series C investment round in Iron Ox, a leading agricultural robot company.

Since retiring from Microsoft, Bill Gates has dedicated his time to a number of causes, including climate change. His Breakthrough Energy Ventures is a climate fund that encompasses a number of different organizations.

Breakthrough Energy’s latest investment is in Iron Ox, a company that launched autonomous farming in 2018.

Iron Ox, which launched autonomous farming in 2018, grows produce in proprietary greenhouses designed from the ground up to mitigate the environmental impacts of agriculture — a data-driven approach backed by plant science, robotics and artificial intelligence.

The closed-loop system optimizes plant yield, expands growth cycles and maximizes crop quality. The result is delicious, nutritious, locally sourced fruits and vegetables that currently cost about the same as produce from conventional farms, with substantially lower environmental impacts.

This round of $53 million brings total funding to $98 million.

“World-class investors know that humanity’s most important pursuit is to reverse climate change. To get there, we can’t settle for incrementally more sustainable crops — and we can’t ask consumers to compromise on taste, convenience or value,” said Iron Ox CEO and Co-Founder Brandon Alexander. “We are applying technology to minimize the amount of land, water and energy needed to nourish a growing population. The team at Iron Ox will not stop until we achieve our long-term mission of making the produce sector carbon negative.”

Bill Gates Pledges $1.5 Billion for Climate Change if Infrastructure Bill Passes

Bill Gates has pledged some $1.5 billion to help combat climate change if President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill passes Congress.

Climate change has become one of the biggest crises facing humanity, with governments and companies alike looking for solutions. The Biden administration has been pushing a major infrastructure bill forward, one that includes funding to help combat climate change.

Bill Gates’ climate fund, Breakthrough Energy, will match $1.5 billion in government funds, if the bill passes, in an effort develop green technologies.

“Critical for all these climate technologies is to get the costs down and to be able to scale them up to a pretty gigantic level,” Gates told The Wall Street Journal, via The Verge.

If the infrastructure bill fails to pass, Breakthrough Energy will likely invest the $1.5 billion in Europe and Asia instead.

Bill Gates, Fourth Richest Human, Announces Divorce

Bill and Melinda Gates have announced their divorce, putting into question the fourth largest personal fortune.

The iconic founder and former CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates has been married to his wife, Melinda, for 27 years. The two originally met in 1987, while working at Microsoft. In addition to three children, the two founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, “a nonprofit fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world.”

Bill Gates released a statement on Twitter:

After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.

    – Melinda Gates and Bill Gates

Divorces are difficult under the best of circumstances but, add in a vast fortune, and things can become complicated very quickly. Despite being the richest man alive, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos would be substantially wealthier had the divorce settlement not cost him $36.8 billion.

It remains to be seen how the Gates’ divorce will unfold, but it could have significant ramifications for the foundation they run.

  • Bill Gates: Over 50% Of Business Travel To Go Away Permanently

Bill Gates: Over 50% Of Business Travel To Go Away Permanently

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates says that over 50% of business travel and 30% of time in the office will never come back even after pandemic restrictions are lifted:

My prediction would be that over 50% of business travel and over 30% of days in the office will go away. Now it’s not the gold standard that to fly all the way here to sit in front of me that. You can do the virtual connection. It will be a very high threshold to actually doing that business trip. There will be ways that you can work from home a lot of the time. Some companies will be extreme on one end or the other.

I just don’t like talking to African leaders and I always feel bad for African leaders. There are so many conferences in Europe and the US that they are expected to come to. Yet, their job in their countries is so important like their education or health system or collecting taxes or disability. Yet, they spend half their time on all these trips. The fact is now we can do a 20-minute call as needed and touch with base them. It’s been pretty impressive how a lot has gotten done. We will go to the office somewhat. We will do some business travel but dramatically less.

The fact that the (video communication) software doesn’t have any sort of serendipitous thing of people you run into after the meeting or gathering thing, there is some work to be done there. So no I haven’t run into somebody and made a new friendship. There is something missing there.

Video Timeline: Richest Billionaires Over The Last 10 Years

Forbes created a cool two-minute video timeline of the richest billionaires in America over the last ten years. The current wealthiest American, of course, is Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos who is worth $179 billion. He is followed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates who is only worth $111 billion. Interestingly, both of these billionaires would be even richer had Bezos not divorced and Gates didn’t give away a huge chunk of his fortune to his family foundation.

Bezos’s divorce cost him $38 billion in stock at 2019 prices. If he had stayed married and held onto his shares he would be $57 billion richer and be worth an astounding $236 billion. Bill Gates has reportedly given away over $50 billion to charitable causes over the years. If he had held on to his Microsoft shares who knows, he might even be richer than Jeff Bezos!

Rounding out the current Top Ten Richest American Billionaires are Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg at $85 billion, investor Warren Buffett at $73.5 billion, Oracle founder Larry Ellison and current potential TikTok investor at $72 billion, former long-time Microsoft CEO and current Clippers owner Steve Ballmer at $69 billion, PayPal-Tesla-SpaceX entrepreneur Elon Musk at $68 billion, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at $67.5 and 65.7 billion, and last but not least Sam Walton daughter and Walmart heiress Alice Walton at $62.3 billion. Notably, Alice Walton is the richest woman in the world.

  • Bill Gates Leaves Microsoft Board

    Bill Gates Leaves Microsoft Board

Microsoft has announced that co-founder Bill Gates has stepped down from the company’s Board of Directors.

Gates has not had a day-to-day role in the company since 2008, when he transitioned away to spend more time with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Even following today’s announcement, he will continue on as Technology Advisor to CEO Satya Nadella.

“It’s been a tremendous honor and privilege to have worked with and learned from Bill over the years. Bill founded our company with a belief in the democratizing force of software and a passion to solve society’s most pressing challenges. And Microsoft and the world are better for it. The board has benefited from Bill’s leadership and vision. And Microsoft will continue to benefit from Bill’s ongoing technical passion and advice to drive our products and services forward. I am grateful for Bill’s friendship and look forward to continuing to work alongside him to realize our mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

“On behalf of our shareholders and the Board, I want to express my deep appreciation to Bill for all his contributions to Microsoft. As a member of the Board, he challenged us to think big and then think even bigger. He leaves an enduring legacy of curiosity and insight that serves as an inspiration for us all,” said John W. Thompson, Microsoft independent board chair.

Even though Gates will continue to have input in his role as Technology Advisor, there’s no denying this is the end of an era for Microsoft.

  • Bill Gates Backing Tech That Could Replace Fossil Fuel For Manufacturing

Bill Gates Backing Tech That Could Replace Fossil Fuel For Manufacturing

Despite the many alternatives to fossil fuel, one segment of the market that has struggled to embrace them is manufacturing. Thanks to a company Bill Gates is backing, that may be about to change.

Heliogen is a solar-energy company that is looking to revolutionize manufacturing, thanks to an innovative way of implementing solar panels. By angling the solar mirrors so as to focus all of them on a single point of a tower, they act like a giant magnifying glass, generating ultra-high heat.

According to a press release, the company has achieved a breakthrough: for the first time commercially, a temperature of at least 1,000 degrees Celsius has been reached with solar energy. Previous solar technology had only been able to reach 565 degrees Celsius. The company plans to ultimately reach 1,500 degrees.

As a byproduct of the process, Heliogen can thermo-chemically split water, creating green hydrogen. The company sees it as an additional opportunity for manufacturing companies, as the byproducts can be used for transportation, heavy equipment or resold to a variety of industries.

Until now, fossil fuel alternatives have been more expensive, making it a tough sell for manufacturing to switch over. If Heliogen’s plans are successful, its tech could be the first viable fossil fuel alternative for the industry, not only helping it go green, but saving companies money in the process.

“The world has a limited window to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Bill Gross, CEO and Founder, Heliogen, and Founder and Chairman, Idealab. “We’ve made great strides in deploying clean energy in our electricity system. But electricity accounts for less than a quarter of global energy demand. Heliogen represents a technological leap forward in addressing the other 75 percent of energy demand: the use of fossil fuels for industrial processes and transportation. With low-cost, ultra-high temperature process heat, we have an opportunity to make meaningful contributions to solving the climate crisis.”

“Today, industrial processes like those used to make cement, steel, and other materials are responsible for more than a fifth of all emissions,” said Bill Gates. “These materials are everywhere in our lives but we don’t have any proven breakthroughs that will give us affordable, zero-carbon versions of them. If we’re going to get to zero-carbon emissions overall, we have a lot of inventing to do. I’m pleased to have been an early backer of Bill Gross’s novel solar concentration technology. Its capacity to achieve the high temperatures required for these processes is a promising development in the quest to one day replace fossil fuel.”

  • Ballmer Says Satya Nadella is Taking Microsoft “To Infinity and Beyond”

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently told Bloomberg that current CEO Satya Nadella is taking Microsoft “to infinity and beyond.” In the interview with Emily Chang, Ballmer reflected on his relationship with Bill Gates and defended his role in the success of Microsoft saying, “I take great satisfaction in the things we accomplished throughout the time, not just when I became CEO.”

    A Miserable Beginning

“When I became CEO we had a very miserable year,” said Ballmer. “Bill didn’t know how to work for anybody and I didn’t know how to manage Bill. I’m not sure I ever learned the latter.”

“I’d say my life changed a lot in 2008 when Bill actually left the company. In a sense I felt like, okay, we are not partners anymore, I have to take accountability. I think I did some of my very best work at the company after Bill left.”

Ballmer Takes Credit for Microsoft’s Move to the Cloud

Ballmer also made the case that his strategy to push Bing is also where Microsoft first moved into cloud services. “I pushed us into Bing and sustained that investment. That’s really where we got into the cloud.

“We started with what’s now Office 365 and Azure after Bill left,” he added. “We pushed into the hardware business with Surface, etc. Now Satya Nadella, my successor, is sort of taking things to infinity and beyond, if you well.”

Ballmer defended the mixed reviews some have given him. “Did I have a lot of success, yeah. Are there some things I wish I did differently, of course. I started a company that had about $2.5 million in revenue and 30 people and I left a company that had $22 billion in profit and I feel net-net, that’s pretty good success.”

    Ballmer on Leaving Microsoft

He also talked about his relationship with Gates. “We’ve kind of drifted apart. He’s got his life and I sort of have mine. Microsoft was the thing that really bound us. We started off as friends and then really got enmeshed around Microsoft. Since I’ve gone, we’ve really have drifted a little bit.”

Ballmer said that leaving Microsoft was not a simple thing and he gave two reasons for it happening. First, there was a “difference in opinion on the strategic direction of the company. Number two, he and I always had what I call a brotherly relationship in the good parts and the bad parts, and I just think towards the end that it was a bit more difficult than not. You know, the stock price wasn’t going anywhere so the rest of the Board felt pressured, despite the fact that profits were going up. I think you had kind of a combustible situation.”

“At the end of the day I have the great comfort in knowing what I did and in feeling good about myself and everything else doesn’t really matter.”

Would Have Moved Into the Phone Business Faster

Ballmer also gave more details on strategic disagreements for the direction of Microsoft.

“I think there was a fundamental disagreement in how important it was to be in the hardware business. I had pushed Surface and the Board had been a little reluctant in supporting it. Then, things came to a climax around what to do in the phone business.”

“I would have moved into the hardware business faster and recognized that what we had in the PC where there was a separation in chips, systems and software wasn’t largely going to reproduce itself in the mobile world.”

“I wish I’d thought about the model of subsidizing phones through the operators,” said Ballmer. “People like to point to this quote where I said iPhones will never sell, it was because the price of $700 was too high. There was business model innovation by Apple, to get it essentially built into the monthly cell phone bill.”

“We should have been in the hardware business sooner in the phone case and we were still suffering from some of the effects of our Vista release of Windows, which sucked up a huge amount of resources for a much longer period of time than it should have, because we stumbled over it. When you have a lot of your engineers, sort of in a sense, being non-productive for awhile it really takes its toll.

    I Wanted to Buy Nokia

“I certainly wanted to buy Nokia. The Board disagreed with that and later came back and said the company should go ahead even though I had decide to leave.

If executed in a certain way, I think it made a lot of sense. Our company chose to go in another direction and that’s the choice the company made.”

    The Market Agrees with Satya

“I see the stock price flying sky high and all you can say is the market certainly agrees with the direction Satya has taken the company and I’m super excited about that.”

Bill Gates Reacts To Namecheck In Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’

Most people would spaz at a shout-out in a Beyoncé track, but Bill Gates is not as well-versed in the Top 40 as the rest of us. The Microsoft founder and tech mogul was recently introduced to Beyoncé’s newest single, “Formation,” and suffice to say, he’s a little baffled about the lyrics.

In an interview with Wired, Bill Gates revealed that although he has heard the song, it wasn’t until one of his employees pointed out his name being mentioned in the lyrics that he found out about it. What’s even more interesting is his puzzlement as to why Beyoncé would choose to namedrop him in her song.

In the song that started a controversy after Beyoncé performed it at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show, the words go: “I might just be the black Bill Gates in the making, ‘cause I slay / I just might be a black Bill Gates in the making.”

“Are you serious? This is kind of a strange set of words here. I’m surprised—I’m not sure she said those words at the Super Bowl, though, did she?” said Gates on learning about the namecheck.

Despite the billionaire’s lukewarm reaction, he still managed to take the shout-out as a compliment. “I guess it’s nice that people consider me successful,” said the Forbes’ No.1 richest billionaire in the world.

Bill Gates also revealed that he has yet to meet Beyoncé, although he has been acquainted with her equally successful husband, Jay Z.

“I know Jay Z because when I did some humor right when I was retiring from Microsoft—he was nice about participating in that, and did a great job on that,” said Gates.

Now that he is aware of his fame in the pop music industry, Bill Gates ever-so-subtly promoted his company to Beyoncé’s fans.

“I guess I should do a Bing search and see if there are more uses of my name that I don’t know about.”

Steve Wozniak Is Also Concerned About Our Future Robot Overlords

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has become the latest tech figure to warn us that the computers are learning and they’re going to destroy us all at some point.

“Computers are going to take over from humans, no question,” said Wozniak in an interview with the Australian Financial Review.

“Like people including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have predicted, I agree that the future is scary and very bad for people. If we build these devices to take care of everything for us, eventually they’ll think faster than us and they’ll get rid of the slow humans to run companies more efficiently.”

You might recall that others have recently spoken out about the existential threat that unchecked Artificial Intelligence poses to the human race.

“I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don’t understand why some people are not concerned,” said Bill Gates in a recent reddit AMA.

Tesla and spaceX founder Elon Musk has been the most vocal about his AI concerns.

    See?

“Will we be the gods? Will we be the family pets? Or will we be ants that get stepped on? I don’t know about that … But when I got that thinking in my head about if I’m going to be treated in the future as a pet to these smart machines … well I’m going to treat my own pet dog really nice,” says Wozniak.

Be nice to the machines, guys. They might remember.

  • Bill Gates Is Concerned About the Rise of the Machines, and Why the Hell Aren’t You?

Bill Gates Is Concerned About the Rise of the Machines, and Why the Hell Aren’t You?

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, who knows a thing or two about technology, is concerned about the day when our artificial intelligence gets a little too smart for its own good and decides it probably doesn’t have to listen to the dumb humans anymore.

Also, why aren’t you concerned?, he wonders.

Gates hosted a reddit AMA on Wednesday, and was asked about the “existential threat” of machine superintelligence. His answer? Hell yeah it’s a issue.

“I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don’t understand why some people are not concerned,” said Gates.

As of late, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has been the most outspoken rich tech dude when it comes to the dangers of AI. He recently called for extensive research to make sure AI doesn’t kill us all, and even make a huge donation to the cause. In the past, he’s said things like …

We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes.

    and

You have no idea how fast [AI] is growing at a pace close to exponential. The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most. This is not a case of crying wolf about something I don’t understand.

Gates also had this to say during his AMA:

“There will be more progress in the next 30 years than ever. Even in the next 10 problems like vision and speech understanding and translation will be very good. Mechanical robot tasks like picking fruit or moving a hospital patient will be solved. Once computers/robots get to a level of capability where seeing and moving is easy for them then they will be used very extensively.”

    Oh goody.

In their annual letter, Bill Gates and wife Melinda have outlined their vision for where they see poverty going in the world. While many may see the gap widening and things getting worse, Bill gates sees reason to believe that things will actually get better soon.

“We’re putting our credibility, time, and money behind this bet — and asking others to join us — because we think there has never been a better time to accelerate progress and have a big impact around the world.”

Bill Gates says that it takes attention to the basics — food, water, warmth — to make a huge difference in the lives of the poor.

“The rich world will keep getting exciting new advances too, but the improvements in the lives of the poor will be far more fundamental — the basics of a healthy, productive life. It’s great that more people in rich countries will be able to watch movies on super hi-resolution screens. It’s even better that more parents in poor countries will know their children aren’t going to die.”

Bill Gates is, of course, known for his role in advancing technology in the United States and around the world. It is technology that Bill Gates sees at the heart of improving the lives of the poor.

“It will take innovation in technology and in ways to deliver it to the people who need it most, which is what our foundation works on.”

It is not just about getting smartphones and other devices into the right hands, though. It is about using technology to recruit others to help.

“There’s another crucial factor: informed, passionate individuals working together to form effective movements for change. People who care about helping those in the world’s poorest places improve their lives. We call them global citizens. And with this letter, we’re helping to kick-start an effort to recruit tens of millions more of them.”

  • Bill Gates Makes Jimmy Fallon Drink Poop Water (His Words!)

You know the scene from The Princess Bride where Westley and Vizzini try to outsmart each other as to who’s going to drink the poisoned wine? Yeah, you know the one.

    Remember how it went down?

Well, Bill Gates basically pulled a Westley on The Tonight Show and tricked Jimmy Fallon into drinking poop water (THEY WERE BOTH POISONED, AHA!).

In other news, Bill Gates is officially calling it “poop water” now. Check it out:

If you’re confused as to why anyone is drinking poop water, check here. Basically, the billionaire head of The Gates Foundation has put his weight behind an interesting project – an “ingenious” machine called the Omniprocessor, which takes solid waste and turns it into electricity, clean water, and a little bit of ash.

  • Bill Gates Samples from Machine That Turns Poop to Water, Electricity

“I watched the piles of feces go up the conveyer belt and drop into a large bin. They made their way through the machine, getting boiled and treated. A few minutes later I took a long taste of the end result: a glass of delicious drinking water.”

That’s the word from Bill Gates, who you’re about to see drink a tall glass of poop – well, water that was poop five minutes prior.

The billionaire head of The Gates Foundation has just detailed one of its most interesting projects – an “ingenious” machine called the Omniprocessor, which was designed by Janicki Bioenergy. The Omniprocessor takes solid waste and turns it into electricity, clean water, and a little bit of ash.

“Through the ingenious use of a steam engine, it produces more than enough energy to burn the next batch of waste. In other words, it powers itself, with electricity to spare. The next-generation processor, more advanced than the one I saw, will handle waste from 100,000 people, producing up to 86,000 liters of potable water a day and a net 250 kw of electricity,” says Gates.

Cool. But why do we need to turn human waste into water?

“Because a shocking number of people, at least 2 billion, use latrines that aren’t properly drained. Others simply defecate out in the open. The waste contaminates drinking water for millions of people, with horrific consequences: Diseases caused by poor sanitation kill some 700,000 children every year, and they prevent many more from fully developing mentally and physically,” says Gates.

Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and reliable electricity is far from a given in many parts of the world. The Omniprocessor solves all of these problems. Gates says it could be “many years” before this machine is getting wide usage, but he’s excited about it.

  • Mark Zuckerberg, Paul Allen, Bill Gates Outgive Several Major Countries to Fight Ebola

Mark Zuckerberg, Paul Allen, Bill Gates Outgive Several Major Countries to Fight Ebola

According to a report from Business Insider, three of America’s tech giants are out-giving several major countries in the fight against Ebola.

We reported here about Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan pledging $25 million to fight Ebola on the front lines in Africa. Bill Gates has already pledged $50 million through the Gates Foundation. And recently Paul Allen pledged $100 million through his Allen Family Foundation toward stopping the epidemic.

Seeing billionaires give money to a good cause is nothing new. These three men have already been leaders in philanthropic circles, especially Gates and Allen, for a long time.

This year alone, the Gates Foundation has given many millions of dollars toward educational institutions, financial services for the poor, agricultural development, and children’s health causes.

Paul Allen’s foundation says it gives in three major focus areas:

“Our Pacific Northwest Program funds arts, and culture, libraries, education and financial empowerment projects in local communities; our Global Initiatives fuel exploration and innovation in the fields of science and technology; and our Signature Awards area recognizes and awards creative leaders and promising researchers.”

Their grantee list shows that they give to arts and culture concerns, science and technology endeavors, as well as asset building and education efforts.

Zuckerberg reportedly does not have a “foundation,” per se. Inside Philanthropy reports that he has a “donor-advised fund at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and also created a supporting organization of SVCF called Startup:Education, which is the outfit through which Zuckerberg and Chan do their giving.”

Zuckerberg not only gives cash grants through his philanthropic arrangements, but millions of shares of Facebook stock.

The combined totals that these three men (and their wives) are giving to fight Ebola is $175 million dollars. This number starts to look quite impressive when stacked up against other totals. For example, here are the totals of a few other “donors”.

    India $12 million
    China $33 million
    Japan $40 million
    Canada $57 million
    France $89 million
    Germany $130 million
    Int’l Monetary Fund $140 million
    African Dev. Bank $150 million

Let’s pause there a moment. Three men in America are together giving more money toward fighting Ebola than several countries combined, and more than the IMF.

Only when we get to the top three “donors” do we see these Big Three Tech Philanthropists in comparable company.

    United Kingdom $210 million
    World Bank $400 million
    United States $750 million
