Apple has released a security update to its Big Sur version of macOS, bringing it to version 11.7.4.
Big Sur was originally released in November 2020, and has since been superseded by macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura. Nonetheless, Apple has a solid track record of providing fixes for older versions of macOS.
According to the company’s support page, “this update has no published CVE entries,” but users should still apply it as soon as possible to be safe.
Apple has started offering free battery replacements for 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros with batteries that won’t charge past 1%.
According to Apple, “a very small number” of 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros won’t charge above 1%. When looking in Systems Preferences > Battery > Battery Health, the status will show “Service Recommended.” If the status reads “Normal,” the machine is not affected.
Users with impacted models should contact Apple to arrange for a free replacement.
In the meantime, Apple has issued an update to macOS Big Sur and Catalina to prevent the problem from occurring with unaffected 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros.
Mac users reported a slew of issues earlier today, with non-Apple apps locking up, behaving sluggishly and failing to launch.
The issue appears to be related to Gatekeeper. Gatekeeper is Apple’s service that checks non-Apple apps to make sure they’re not malicious. It seems the Gatekeeper server was experiencing some kind of problem verifying apps, likely due to macOS Big Sur’s release and Apple’s overloaded servers.
Big Sur is one of the biggest updates to macOS since OS X was originally released. It’s the first macOS that will let users run iOS apps. As a result, there has been a lot of pent up demand for this update.
🤔 FYI, seems to be something going on with super sluggish app launching right now. It doesn’t seem to be just us. We are looking into it! https://t.co/RZduhcBwiX
Apple unveiled the next version of macOS, named “Big Sur.” The design of the OS features a number of refinements.
Apple has repeatedly said it has no intention of merging iOS and macOS, as each has a place in the company’s ecosystem. That doesn’t mean they can’t benefit from each other, however, and it’s apparent that many of the Mac’s new features are inspired by some of the best features of iOS.
Interface
Craig Federighi highlighted Apple’s intention of making its various platform feel more cohesive, making it easier for users to move from one device to another.
The updated interface includes icons that are more reminiscent of iOS, as well as a more colorful interface and increased transparency.
Mac Catalyst
Mac Catalyst receives an upgrade in macOS Big Sur. Catalyst is the compatibility layer that makes it possible to port iOS and iPadOS apps to macOS
Developers will be able to optimize Catalyst apps to take full advantage of the Mac’s resolution. Apps will also have access to menu and keyboard APIs, as well as new controls, such as checkboxes and date pickers.
The new Maps and Messages are good examples of Catalyst apps.
Safari
Big Sur has the biggest update to Safari since it was introduced. The company has focused on performance, improving not only its already good JavaScript performance, but page-load performance as well.
Privacy will take center stage in Big Sur, making it much easier for users to see how websites attempt to track their data.
Web Extensions API will now make it easier to bring extension for other browsers over to Safari. There will be a new category in the Mac App Store to showcase Safari extensions.
Extensions will be managed in a way that preserves user privacy. Users will be able to manage what data an extension can access, as well as limitations on how long it can access that data.
Safari will also feature built-in translation. Safari will detect when it encounters a page that is not the same as the primary language on the computer and display a translate button. Clicking the button will translate the text, and even text off of the screen will dynamically translate as Safari scrolls down.
Next is Apple’s biggest announcement of the day: Custom Silicon
Thirty-year-old Kate Bosworth and 43-year-old Michael Polish married on August 31st of this year, and now their wedding is the focus of Martha Stewart Weddings. The wedding was a dream fulfillment for the bride who explained her love of the outdoors in the winter issue of Martha Stewart Weddings. “I’ve been a horse rider my whole life and have always been attracted to those wide-open spaces and the big sky,” Bosworth said.
The couple decided to have their big day at a ranch located at Montana’s Rock Creek. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy fly fishing, hiking, and horseback riding as part of the wedding festivities. According to E! News, “Instead of a boring old guest book, friends and family signed a map of Montana. And party favors were made up of whiskey and bitters wrapped inside rubber stamped paper with their new monogram.”
Bosworth decided to wear two wedding gowns that were both designed by Oscar de la Renta — one for the mountaintop ceremony where she arrived in a horse-drawn carriage and the other dress for the reception. “I was deeply in love with both dresses,” she said.
Film director Michael Polish and actress Kate Bosworth first met on the set of the 2011 movie Big Sur. Bosworth spoke about the relationship as being a “love at first sight” and once-in-a-lifetime type of situation. “It was that artist-muse relationship unfolding very quickly and deeply. [Michael simply informed me] i’m going to marry you,” she said.
It looks like the celebrity couple, Kate Bosworth and Michael Polish have finally tied the knot. Kate Bosworth, the well-known actress that we all first came to know from her starring role in the surfer movie Blue Crush, was last seen in Movie 43. Her and her recently wed husband, Polish, met on the set of the film Big Sur. Big Sur is based on a novel by Jack Kerouac of the same name and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2013, but has yet to be released to national theaters. Bosworth is one of the stars of the film, while Polish directs the film. Polish’s previous films have never received a ton of recognition, but this one might be the one that elevates him to the next level. He also has another couple of films that are in post-production right now.
The couple exchanged vows in Phillipsburg, Montana at a resort outdoors called The Ranch at Rock Creek.
Polish is a bit older than Bosworth at the age of 42, while she is only 30.
Polish has been married once already, to Jo Strettell, having a daughter named Jasper, who is now a teenager. This marks the first marriage for Bosworth, who just got out of a relationship with fellow actor Alexander Skarsgaard, before meeting Polish. In an interview with InStyle, she told the magazine, “I can give you one detail: it’s not the norm and whisky will be involved.”
The couple did not seem to have the traditional sort of wedding, and had a very intimate ceremony as well with only about 50-75 of their closest friends. According to Martha Stewart Weddings, the couple exchanged vows that they wrote themselves and the ceremony took place on a bluff overlooking acres of rolling hills, streams, mountains, and wildflowers, late in the afternoon. Music and dancing followed in the Silver Dollar Saloon, with an after party to follow that. It sounds like this couple really knows how to throw a party. They mention a couple notable guests as well including actress Lake Bell and actor-producer Walter Goggins.
