  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Bends When You Bend It, Just Like the iPhone 6 Plus

Samsung Galaxy S6 Bends When You Bend It, Just Like the iPhone 6 Plus

In things are going to bend when you bend them news, it appears that Samsung might want to build a time machine, go back in time, and not make fun of Apple for its bendable phones.

Third-party insurance company SquareTrade has a new video out, and it’s making the rounds. In the video, various new smartphones are put through a pressure test – and lo and behold, when enough pressure is applied the metal frames begin to buckle.

The point of note here, however, is that the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is just as bendable as the iPhone 6 Plus. Both took about 110 pounds of pressure to start bending.

The only difference is that the Galaxy S6 Edge also started shattering. So, while an iPhone 6 Plus might bend in your pocket, a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge might leave you with a pocket full of glass. Check it out:

  • ‘Bendgate’ Proving Bigger Than Apple Cares to Admit?

‘Bendgate’ Proving Bigger Than Apple Cares to Admit?

When people started complaining about their brand new iPhone 6s bending in their pockets, Apple was quick to play it down. Saying that warping was “extremely rare” through normal use, Apple said that only nine customers had complained about bending iPhones.

    Well, here’s 300 bent iPhones 6s.

Bendghazi lives – and it’s a bit more serious than Apple wants to admit.

That video comes to us from One of the Nine, a website created for the sole purpose of allowing people to upload their bent iPhones.

“We aim to find all 9 of ’em … and maybe more,” says the site.

As of today, they’ve currently found 327 of the 9.

Some reports indicate that Apple may have quietly strengthened the iPhone 6 Plus in response to Bendgate. Still, it’s clear that Bendgate is a bit bigger than “extremely rare through normal use” and nine bent iPhones.

  • Tim Cook In Hot Water For Bending iPhone And Botched OS Updates

Tim Cook In Hot Water For Bending iPhone And Botched OS Updates

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook is taking the heat for the recent publicity stumbles his company has made. Bending iPhones and botched OS updates are causing users to rethink their commitment to the company.

“I just wish that Tim Cook had a better handle on things,” Mac customer Jason Nochimson told Bloomberg News. Nochimson discovered that the latest OS update left him without cell phone service on his iPhone 6. He spent two and a half hours talking to customer service. “I was worried that my daughter’s school was going to call me today and I wasn’t going to be able to get them,” he said. When Nochimson finally reached a representative, “he told me that he was not made aware that Apple was releasing 8.0.1 today. It was a shock to him that that happened. He said typically when they do software updates they know about it days in advance so they’re ready for it.”

In response, Apple has released a statement: “We apologize for the great inconvenience experienced by users.”

“Hey, Tim, we have an idea: Get your shit together,” a MacDailyNews editorial retorted, “Apologies are nice, but they only go so far. Fix the problem(s), Apple.”

Reuters reported the blunders have left the company with a 25 billion dollar loss in stocks. Howevere, the public image of the company is arguably the biggest casualty of the blunders. Social media is mocking Apple and the bending iPhone 6 relentlessly:

Still, the first three days have resulted in 10 million iPhone 6 sales, according to Reuters. The #bendgate scandal has yet to affect sales.

  • iPhone 6, Plus Bend Their Way into More Countries

Last Friday, Apple’s new smartphone lineup, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, launched in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK.

Today, add 22 more countries to the list of places where people can buy the new devices. The new iPhones have just launched in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and United Arab Emirates

Demand is sure to be high, as Apple recently revealed record sales for the new phones during their first weekend on the market. In three days, Apple sold over 10 million iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 Pluses.

That’s not to say that the launch hasn’t been fraught with complications and headaches for the Cupertino-based company. Not only has the rollout of iOS 8 been a mild disaster thanks to flawed updates, but Apple has been dealing with bending iPhones, now known across the internet as ‘Bendgate.”

Word got around that some users were complaining that their brand new, giant iPhone 6 Pluses were actually bending in their pockets. The whole thing snowballed into an outright PR crisis, even though Apple claims that only a handful of actual iPhone 6 owners have complained about this problem.

  • Apple Pushes iOS 8.0.2 After 8.0.1 Blunder, Apologizes Again

A week after pushing iOS 8 to iPhone users, Apple released its first update – iOS 8.0.1. Immediately, complaints flooded Twitter and the blogosphere, with people reporting that the update disabled Touch ID and prevented them from being able to connect with cell networks.

Apparently only iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users were negatively affected by the update, and according to Apple, less than 40,000 of them experienced the problems (though that still seems like a lot of people to me).

Apple has released another update – iOS 8.0.2 – to fix the issues, and has apologized (which seems to be a common theme with new iOS/iPhone releases in recent years). TechCrunch shares this statement from the company:

iOS 8.0.2 is now available for users, it fixes an issue that affected iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who downloaded iOS 8.0.1, and includes improvements and bug fixes originally in iOS 8.0.1. We apologize for inconveniencing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who were impacted by the bug in iOS 8.0.1.

Apple has also been taking a beating from the media about the iPhone 6 Plus bending in people’s pockets. The company addressed that too (via MacRumors):

Our iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature a precision engineered unibody enclosure constructed from machining a custom grade of 6000 series anodized aluminum, which is tempered for extra strength. They also feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. We chose these high-quality materials and construction very carefully for their strength and durability. We also perform rigorous tests throughout the entire development cycle including 3-point bending, pressure point cycling, sit, torsion, and user studies. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use.

With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus. As with any Apple product, if you have questions please contact Apple.

Samsung has even gone so far as to capitalize on “bendgate” for its ads, which in turn were parodied on Conan.

  • iPhone 6 Bending: Not A Cool New Feature

The iPhone 6 is bending in pockets, say some customers.

The iPhone 6 bending problem has become known as “Bendgate” for good reason.

Many distraught customers who just shelled out their hard-earned money for the latest and greatest Apple gadget have found that the iPhone 6 models’ slimmer and larger design make it easy for the phones to bend while in a pocket.

The iPhone bending trend isn’t a new one. Previous iPhone models, like the 5s, as well as those from other manufacturers, like the HTC One, have reported issues with bending, but none have become an epidemic like this problem has.

    As noted on imore.com,

“If you apply enough force to an inch-thick solid steel rod, it will bend. Same goes for the quarter-inch-thick iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (which, I should note, have far less than a quarter of an inch of aluminum in any one spot). Aluminum is actually a fairly soft metal, ranking at 2.5-to-3 on the Mohs scale of hardness. That is to say, it’s about as tough as a U.S. penny (which is actually 97.5% zinc and just plated in copper).”

So, if you just spent hundreds of dollars on your new toy and are now afraid of your iPhone 6 bending, there are some things that can be done to prevent this.

For example, if you can’t keep your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus in your purse or man bag or whatever and must keep it in a pocket, go for the front pocket. Also, when it’s in your front pocket, try to keep it upright.

Some hard cases could help prevent the iPhone 6 from bending, but those softer and more pliable cases won’t do a thing.

What do you think? Should new iPhone 6 owners have seen this issue coming?
