  • Anne Swaney: Person Of Interest Named In Murder Of ABC7 Exec

Executive producer of ABC7, Anne Swaney, was found dead by a river in Belize on January 15. Authorities believe Swaney was strangled.

Her body was discovered floating face-down wearing just her bra in the Mopan River, which is near Belize’s border with Guatemala.

“Her neck and either side of her head had laceration and that led us to believe it was a case of murder,” Daniel Arzu, Benque Viejo Police Superintendent told ABC7 Chicago.

A post mortem examination revealed she died of “asphyxia due to compression of the neck area, throttling (manual strangulation) and blunt force traumatic injuries to the head and neck region.”

The executive web producer’s phone is said to be missing. Her remaining belongings will be turned over to U.S. Embassy officials on Monday, according to WLS-TV.

Anne Swaney was staying at Nabatunich cottages in the city of Benque Viejo in Belize, and according to investigators, she disappeared while doing yoga on Thursday morning. Her tour guide found her yoga mat and her other stuff near the river, but after failing to find her reported her disappearance to the authorities.

A Guatemalan fisherman was being questioned, but he was not declared a suspect. The man, whose name is Rafael Martinez, was considered a person of interest, according to the spokesman for the Belize Ministry of National Security. “He is a person who the police believe can assist in the investigation.”

Swaney worked at ABC7 for 16 years.

Anne Swaney was described by the president and general manager of ABC7, John Idler, as a “trailblazer in the digital news space,” and a “kind person who always had a smile and a positive attitude.”

“Anne was our leader, Anne was our conscience. Anne wanted to make sure that every story that we put online was first and foremost right,” director of digital operations at ABC7 Chicago, Kevin Carpenter, shared. “There’s always going to be a spot there that we will miss.”

  • Florida Gold Theft: Accused Man Apprehended In Belize

On Wednesday, the U.S. Marshalls Service reported that they have Cuban fugitive Raonel Valdez-Valhuerdis in custody at the Miami-Dade County Jail.

Valhuerdis was the man suspected of stealing over a hundred pounds of gold that amounted to almost $3 million. He stole the gold in South Florida and was caught in Belize.

According to a report from the authorities, Valhuerdis, 34, and two other men stole the gold from a Bolivian export company employee while he was outside a Coral Gables apartment building. The incident happened on October 2012.

Valhuerdis was arrested then later set free on $75,000 bail a few months after. Police were able to track Valhuerdis’ whereabouts after the robbery through a GPS monitor that he was required to wear on his ankle from an unrelated charge.

However, he disappeared when the authorities lost track of his GPS monitor.

Valhuerdis first came to the United States in 2005. He was able to get an official driver’s license and a Social Security card in the state of Florida because of the Cuban Adjustment Act, which states that immigrants from the island who enter the United Stated are granted a nearly-guaranteed legal status. After obtaining his legal documents, Valhuerdis started his life of crime.

His first offense was back in 2007 when he was charged with marijuana possession. He got out of jail on parole, but was again apprehended by the authorities the following year when 85 grams of methamphetamine was discovered hidden under his car’s hood. That same year, he was arrested for assaulting security guards with a weapon in the midst of trying to steal garden shears at a Home Depot branch.

Valhuerdis got in trouble time-after-time, being involved in several crimes, such as human smuggling, kidnapping, heading a marijuana growing operation, and armed robbery. He was also involved in domestic violence, as he reportedly abused the mother of his child.

He was found at the Belize border and jailed at the Hattieville Prison in Belize before being transferred to the United States.

  • John McAfee Responds To Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Last week, news came out that eccentric McAfee Antivirus founder John McAfee is being sued by the daughter of his neighbor in Belize, Gregory Faull, whose death began a multi-national manhunt for McAfee last year.

McAfee has remained wanted for questioning in Belize, but was able to make his way back to the United States after a fascinating and somewhat bizarre series of events.

BBC News reported on November 14th:

Gary Roberts, a Florida-based lawyer acting on behalf of Mr Faull’s daughter, is seeking a jury trial and more than $75,000 (£46,800) in damages from the “wrongful death lawsuit”.

Two days later, McAfee responded on his blog ,”Now that a civil suit has been initiated against me for the death of my neighbour Mr. Faull in Belize, I feel that it is important to explain the single factor that makes me look suspicious — that is: why did I refuse to submit to questioning by the Belizean authorities.”

He then shared this video, explaining, “The following video shows the GSU (Gang Suppression Unit) of Belize which was dispatched to my jungle compound on the 1st of May 2012 – 6 months prior to the death of my neighbour Mr. Faull. They were dispatched to my residence because I refused to pay a bribe. They killed my dog (view picture), destroyed my property and kept me kneeling for 14 hours with my hands handcuffed behind my back – a common torture technique used throughout Central America.”

“After the assault on my compound on the 1st of May I went public with information about corruption in Belize to the International Press, including allegations that the Belizean government was selling passports to the Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations,” McAfee wrote. “No one at that time believed me. However, as the following news report from Belize will show, this was really happening been happening and is still happening today.”

He listed several links (find them in the post), urging those interested to read their contents.

“In light of my personal experience with the GSU and with the knowledge of political corruption that I possessed, I was not about to turn myself over to the Belizean authorities,” he added.

Since being back in the States, McAfee has been busy putting out quirky videos and starting a new company aimed at providing a “new type of Internet” with NSA-proof privacy in mind.

  • Belize Tourism Board Turns Breaking Bad Reference into Promotional Gold

    There be spoilers ahead…

On last Sunday night’s episode of AMC’s Breaking Bad, Saul and Walter White had an amazing little interchange about sending someone to Belize.

Of course, they weren’t really talking about a relaxing getaway spent exploring sandy beaches, scuba diving, caving, and all of the other activities offered by the Central American nation. “Sending to Belize” was Breaking Bad‘s version of “sleeping with the fishes.” Yeah, they were talking about murder.

But that didn’t stop the Belize Tourism Board from jumping on the opportunity to capitalize on the reference. In fact, they launched a campaign to send the cast of Breaking Bad on an all-inclusive trip.

Here’s the actual invitation the BTB sent to the Breaking Bad gang (via NY Times):

“Many of us are big fans of the show and can’t wait to see what happens over the last six episodes. While we hope that some of our favorite characters don’t get ‘sent on a trip to Belize’ in the show, we do hope you will take us up on the following offer – we’d like to send all of you on an ACTUAL trip to our country after the season is over,” it reads.

    (image)

They also tweeted at some of the Breaking Bad cast:

Now that’s making the best of a murder reference.

  • John McAfee Is Back In The United States

Last month, antivirus creator John McAfee went on the lam as Belize police sought him for questioning in relation to the murder of his neighbor Gregory Faull, who was found shot to death. McAfee’s story is that he is innocent of the crime, but believes if detained in Belize, he may be tortured or killed. He made his way to Guatemala where he was ultimately detained, but has now been expelled to the United States, which is just fine with him.

You can browse our coverage of these events here.

Here’s an interview he did with Bloomberg before his flight:

After that, he posted to his blog from the plane, saying, that he had been “forcibly” separated from Sam, his girlfriend, who is with his friend Amy. He closed that post by saying, “Both are coming as per sam’s request. Amy fears for her life in Belize. More in Miami. Taking off.”

The latest post, titled “Message To The Media,” simply says to respect his privacy, but comes under the URL “http://www.whoismcafee.com/i-am-in-south-beach/”. The post has been “edited by staff” from an earlier version.

The AP reports that McAfee is “holed up in a Miami hotel,” and that authorities from U.S. Customs and Border Protection are not commenting on whether he would be questioned or detained in the U.S. He has reportedly not been charged with any crime in the U.S. so far.

  • John McAfee: By The Way, I’m Harold M.

John McAfee: By The Way, I’m Harold M.

John McAfee, as you may know, has been blogging a lot since evading authorities in Belize who want to bring him in for questioning in relation to the murder of his neighbor. Even once detained in Guatemala, he was still blogging (and even putting out YouTube videos) from jail.

Recently, there have been some posts made by a mysterious Harold M. That includes the ones earlier that said:

A Guatemalan judge has just ruled that Mr. McAfee was detained illegally. He will be released from detention at the central imigration centerin Guatemala City tomorrow morning. It is believed he will be allowed to return to the United States.

    Good News.

    And

John will be released from detention at 9:00 A.M., Guatemala Time, from the Immigration detention center in Guatemals City. He has not divulged his plans.

Now, McAfee has put out a new post saying that he is actually Harold M. He’s been using a “friend’s” name to confuse Belize officials.

“Belize officials were reading my blog constantly so I could not post under my own name,” he writes. “Hence, my friend Harold let me use his name. Apparently it worked. A couple of times I logged in as myself for a while just to confuse an already confused beaurocracy in Belize. I would like to thank Harold for lending me his name by the way.”

He also says that the Guatemalans have been as nice to him as his own family.

  • It Looks Like John McAfee Is Getting Released

The public has watched this whole saga unfold, strangely, even as McAfee was in hiding, but after being detained in Guatemala, and being granted a stay as the country hoped to expel him back to Belize where he is wanted by authorities in connection with the murder of his neighbor, McAfee is apparently set to be released. It also looks like he might get his wish, which is to return to his native United States.

A post on McAfee’s blog from Harold M. says:

A Guatemalan judge has just ruled that Mr. McAfee was detained illegally. He will be released from detention at the central imigration centerin Guatemala City tomorrow morning. It is believed he will be allowed to return to the United States.

    Good News.

Update: This just showed up on the blog (also from Harold M.):

John will be released from detention at 9:00 A.M., Guatemala Time, from the Immigration detention center in Guatemals City. He has not divulged his plans.

The LA Times spoke with McAfee’s lawyer, who said he expects McAfee to be released by Thursday or Friday, and believes he will seek to return to the U.S. immediately:

Guerra said that according to Guatemalan law, someone entering illegally has the right to 10 days to establish immigration status. “There is no crime in coming without any visa. If there’s not any crime, the immigration office has to release him.”

McAfee has maintained that he is innocent of the murder, but believes if captured by the Belize government, which he claims is corrupt, he may be tortured or killed.

Here, you can watch a couple of videos McAfee recorded over the weekend defending himself and answering questions from the press.

  • Here’s Video Of John McAfee’s Q&A With Press

John McAfee took to YouTube on Sunday to engage in a Q&A session with press to set the record straight about his situation in Guatemala, and the whole series of events that led up to his detention.

The first video is essentially the same kind of stuff we’ve been hearing from McAfee all the while – about how the press has portrayed him as paranoid, and how corrupt the Belize government is. He also urges people to read his blog.

The second video features his responses to the press questions he selected to answer. It’s about three times as long as the first one.

The first question he addresses is whether or not he killed Gregory Faull (his neighbor, who was found shot to death – the reason he is wanted in Belize for questioning). “No. Let me be clear. I had absolutely nothing to do with the murder in Belize,” McAfee says.

He also says he believes the Vice reporters he was with prior to his detention are “underground” and “on the run from Sam”(his girlfriend). “That’s a joke,” he adds. Sam is still with him in Guatemala, he says.

“Our intent is to return to America, if at all possible,” he says. “And settle down to whatever normal life we can settle down to…”

He addresses the question as to whether or not he takes bath salts. Bringing up the guy who got his face eaten in Florida a while back, he says bath salts are the “worst drug on the planet.”

It should be noted that the face-eater was found not to have been on bath salts.

“I do not take drugs, and have not taken drugs in over thirty years,” he says, adding that he does not even drink. “If I were to slip,” he says, “please…wouldn’t I take a good drug? I do have the resources. I do not have to resort to taking the worst drug in the world.”

Last week, McAfee was rushed to the hospital. He says his health is improving. The problem was that he did not eat for two days, and had very little liquid. He had been smoking almost non stop. “I am fine now,” he says.

He had also made an offer to the Prime Minister of Belize to meet in person. He says the PM has not contacted him.

McAfee says he is filing a series of papers in an attempt to keep him in Guatemala “long enough for the world to see the injustice” of sending him back to Belize. He says he’d be happy to go to England or America. “I do have a thirty-day stay – for thirty days, no matter what happens, the government cannot return me to Belize.”

  • John McAfee Hasn’t Slept In 24 Hours, But He Does Have A Lawyer Now

Earlier, John McAfee wrote on his blog that he was in Guatemala, and that he had made it to safety. He has now posted again, saying that he has a new lawyer.

“I have retained Telésforo Guerra, former Attorney General for the country of Guatemala, to assist in my fight against the Government of Belize,” McAfee writes. “Mr. Guerra is one of most prominent attorneys in Guatemala and, as a shared border neighbor, is well versed in the intricate system of corruption with the Belizean Government. Mr. Guerra is Samantha’s uncle.”

“I have, in the past three weeks, had no contact with the American Embassy in Belize,” he adds. “Since many employees of the Embassy are Belizean nationals, I did not feel safe in communicating with them. Now that I am in Guatemala, and in a safe harbor, I will reach out to the Embassy here.”

McAfee has been in hiding, as police in Belize have been looking to bring him in for questioning. McAfee has indicated that he believes that if detained, he would be tortured, at best.

In his latest post, McAfee notes that he has not slept in over 24 hours, and that he is in non-stop meetings and “strategizing” his next steps. He also managed to squeeze in an offer to the Prime Minister of Belize, whom he has been blogging about repeatedly. He says he will agree to meet him in a neutral country to discuss “mutual issues,” and will turn over thousands of hours of video and audio as “proof” of the “level of corruption being propagated throughout every branch” of his government.

    Stay tuned.

  • John McAfee Says He’s Out Of Belize, But That He’ll Be Back

There have been a lot of confusing reports out about the whereabouts of John McAfee, as he continues to hide from authorities in Belize. Today, McAfee updated his personal blog to let the world know that he is safe and that he is out of the country now.

    More background here.

He says he’s been hanging out with journalists from Vice Magazine and his girlfriend Sam, who he has blogged about repeatedly.

“I apologize for the silence, and misdirection,” McAfee writes. “I am currently safe and in the company of two intrepid journalist[s] from Vice Magazine, and, of course, Sam. We are not in Belize, but not quite out of the woods yet. I will do a more detailed posting later today if all goes well. My ‘double’, carrying on a North Korean passport under my name, was in fact detained in Mexico for pre-planned misbehavior, but due to indifference on the part of authorities was evicted from the jail and was unable to serve his intended purpose in our exit plan. He is now safely out of Mexico.”

“I left Belize because of a series of events which led both Sam and I to believe that she was in danger of capture,” he writes. “She has been my go-between and my eyes and ears in the outside world. I decided to make the move. I will be returning to Belize after I have place Sam in a safe position. My fight is in Belize, and I can do little in exile. My lifeline of information pertaining to the inner workings of the government depends on my physical presence.”

According to McAfee, Vice Magazine will be posting a story today (with video) that will possibly put an “end” to the “drug crazed madman” angle of his story, which he says the mainstream press (like the New York Times) continues to portray.

  • John McAfee: My Options Are Diminishing

At 3:30 AM, John McAfee, who is still in hiding from police in Belize, posted to his blog that his “options are diminishing,” as his sources indicate that armed forces are “closing in”.

If you haven’t been keeping up with the saga, you can start here.

    McAfee writes:

Chad Essley, in the event of my arrest, has over 2 million words – posts that he will continue to publish – words that I, and others, have written over the past seven months. He has 9,000 photos, and thousands of hours of audio and video. These will be released in the time frame that I have instructed. A good story depends, most of all, on proper timing.

I have been asked why I don’t release everything at once. This is the bane of the modern press. The mass of information is too great for an intelligent digestion in the time frame allotted to a journalist prior to the publisher’s deadline. The press stories will describe what they allways describe – a twisted shadow in an ill-lit room. I must control the flow, so that the necessary glue of understanding has time to set.

Whatever happens to me, please continue to support the cause of justice in this country. Belize is one of the smallest countries in the world, and you may feel that it is not worth the effort, considering the magnitude of injustice that exists worldwide, but if we can’t fix the smallest part of anything, then what hope is there for the whole.

A few hours later, another post was made under the title “Police Caught With Their Pants Down,” which includes this video:

As you may know, you can keep up with McAfee’s side of the story not only on his blog, but with his Twitter account. He also has a Facebook page.

  • John McAfee: You Won’t Hear From Me For A Few Days

There have been a handful more posts made to John McAfee’s blog since we last checked in. One of them indicates that comments have been turned back on, after a previous post announced that they were being disabled.

Also in a previous post, McAfee said he would be posting audio recordings from hidden recorders he had set up. He tried to include on via a SoundCoud embed initially, but it didn’t work properly. He has now updated the post to link to the recording.

In the latest post, we learn that “something has happened,” and we won’t be hearing from McAfee for a few days.

Blog admin Chad Essley writes, “I received a phone call this evening from John that said ‘something had happened’ and that ‘everything will be alright’. He needed to move to another location, I would not hear from him, and he would not be posting for the next few days.”

More coverage of the McAfee saga here.

  • John McAfee Shuts Down Blog Comments, Starts Posting Audio

John McAfee, creator of the famous antivirus software, has been hiding from the cops in Belize after his neighbor was found dead with a gunshot to the head. He has been hiding in plain sight (at least according to his own account), sneaking around the scene of the crime in disguise.

After the incident, he began calling Wired reporter Joshua Davis, providing updates about his situation, and ultimately began blogging the updates himself.

You can read our past coverage on the events here. Here, you can see a summary of most of his blog posts.

Today, the admin of the blog (presumably Chad Essley, the admin he referenced in a previous post) posted an update indicating that comments on the blog were being disabled. He wrote:

Apologies, as the traffic is too high for our small staff to moderate at this time.

We are in the process of compiling the questions into a FAQ, with answers from John, which will be available soon. Thank you.

Since then, McAfee has posted another one titled “Evidence vs Paranoia“.

The media has portrayed me as paranoid. I am a poor judge, since if I am paranoid, it is a paranoid mind judging itself. However, I am a technologist and use that as best I can for my own purposes. Shortly after the raid on my property by 42 soldiers in riot gear looking for a non-existent meth lab, I began a program of observation and recording of everything that happened to me. I planted tiny POV video cameras and sound recorders on myself, some of my dogs, all around my property, in my cars, on my boats, at the Studio 54 bar in Orange Walk, on trees, in bushes, – everywhere I could. The first two months were audio only. I knew that The Government was recruiting friends, neighbors and acquaintances for information about me and for help with “dealing with me” in some fashion. Most declined. No-one would ever believe my story, so recording it was my only option.

My first big break came when an ex-councilman from the village of Carmelita, named Anthony Rhaburn, was caught on one of my devices while trying to convince one of my employees to help the government kill me. The language is Creole, but non-Creole speakers can get the gist of it if you listen closely. Creole is derived from English after all.

I will be posting these recordings slowly over the next few months as the World digests them. I have recordings of the Prime Minister responding “Who does he think he is?”, in Creole, after I requested an apology for the April raid. I have recordings of the Police Commissioner telling one of my lawyers that “If Mr. McAfee doesn’t like the system here he can fucking leave”. I have many, many recordings – some 6,000 hours in total. They are devastating. They are safely in the States, and copies are in the vaults of Lombard Odie & Cie in Switzerland, and Banco Pinchincha C.A. in Ecuador.

The post includes a soundcloud embed, which currently says it is not available.

McAfee had previously said that he had enough material read to keep the blog updated for months, even if he gets captured.

  • John McAfee Blogs (Frequently) While Still Hiding From Police, Offers Reward For Capture Of Killer

Update (11/26): McAfee has posted an apology to Jeff Wise:

I have erroneously accused Jeff Wise of improper behavior on a reporting trip that he did to my flying ranch in New Mexico. I finally received the photos from that trip and was going to publish them, and when I looked at them, to my horror, it was a different reporter (whose name I will obviously not release) from a different magazine, on a different trip. I wish that I could excuse myself due to the fact that I did dozens of interviews and appeared in dozens of magazines during my flying times in New Mexico, and could be expected to be confused, but that is no excuse. Jeff’s trip did not even include a campfire session.

I was wrong. I apologize. I know that that does not help, but I am truly sorry.

John McAfee is wanted by police in Belize in connection with the murder of his neighbor Gregory Faull. Faull was found shot to death a week ago Sunday. McAfee has been hiding out since, and providing updates via a Wired reporter who had just wrapped up a large piece about his life in Belize.

You can catch up via this series of articles.

A few days ago, McAfee began blogging himself, aiming to set the record straight, from his own perspective. This is a look at his first posts. Read the whole blog here.

In the introductory post, McAfee begins, “With lots of time on my hands and very little to do with it, I’ve been reflecting on the recent detour my life has taken. How did I end up as a murder suspect on the lam?”

He then proceeds to call out the press for sensationalizing the whole story. While he says he “could go on,” and probably will at some point, he specifically calls out Gizmodo and Wired and their reporters Jeff Wise and Joshua Davis, respectively. The former, which broke the news about this whole murder suspect story, may be angry about some photographs his wife may have received, according to McAfee. Here’s an excerpt:

Jeff’s first article about me was a piece in National Geographic Explorer about my flying adventures in New Mexico. He stayed with us for a week or so and went flying/camping with my pilot friends and I as part of his stay. One of those friends was a beautiful young woman named Goldy Ivashkov. The first day he arrived he ended up spending the night with her. While camping, their intimacy was flaunted to the point that around the campfire, the lap-sitting, face kissing, fondling was so intense that I jokingly and loudly said “somebody get pictures of this to send to his wife in case we get a bad story from him”. It was a joke. I joke a lot. Unfortunately, many pictures were taken and, as I am told, his wife did receive some. I had nothing to do with it. I could care less about who sleeps with whom, or where, or how — as long as it’s not in my own bed while I’m trying to sleep. Well, to be honest, not even in the same room while I’m trying to sleep. Barring that, nothing could concern me less.

Jeff however, I truly believe, thinks that I sent the photos to his wife. If I had done so, then I would deserve whatever wrath he chose to mete out. But seriously, it’s not my style. And if his mistaken suspicion is not the reason for his bulldog approach to sniffing out my life then I can’t even guess at what twisted motives move this man.

Joshua Davis, the Wired reporter (which he has been calling repeatedly throughout this whole adventure), McAfee didn’t have much to say about specifically, but said for his story, a photographer showed up near the end of the process of a huge piece Davis was writing, and took hundreds of pictures, including the now famous one where he is shirtless and holding a shotgun. According to McAfee, he was asked to pose in this fashion. “This is not something I normally do – I mean, walk half naked around my property holding a shotgun…” he says.

McAfee’s next post, entitled “Background” is pretty much a set of links to stories and information about the Belize government, Prime Minister and Gang Suppression unit. The post after that is called “How this began,” and shares McAfee’s side of the story which began with a raid on his property back in April. He mentions that when the authorities showed up, he ran naked outside with a pistol, but then put it down when he saw the military formation. At that point, he went back inside and woke up the 17-year old girl with whom he was living, and told her to get dressed.

He talks about being handcuffed behind his back and sitting in the sun without food or water for 14 hours. He said he emailed the Prime Minister looking for an apology, and did not receive one. He says he will not stop being a vocal opponent of the PM until he receives one.

    Samantha

The next post is about Samantha (pictured), the 20-year-old “ball of fire” that will not leave his side. Here’s an excerpt from that one:

Sam has been upbeat throughout my ordeal with the government, not just in the past week, but also for the past 6 months. She has experienced the government’s harassment with me and has seen all that I have seen. She is pissed at all that has happened to us and wants to see justice done, just as I do – not just for Mr. Faul’s family and friends, but for all Belizeans living under the Draconian system that has evolved under the present government.

For the past week, Sam has kept our clothes clean and has fed us and kept me distracted by telling stories of her life and humorous anecdotes about her family. She is a natural raconteur and mimic. She has also helped me evade detection by grabbing me and kissing me, in public, in a fashion that causes passerby’s to feel embarrassment at the thought of staring and by creating emotional scenes that cause the curious to momentarily forget what they were looking for. She is acutely aware of her surroundings and is as street smart as a sober hobo. She does not drink or take drugs.

The next post is called “Harrassment“. He says that within a week of the raid on his property, the harrassment began. He writes, “First there was an attempt to charge me with running an antibiotics laboratory without a license. In Belize a special government permit is required to research antibiotics – a law which is common in Third World countries. To date, no such permits have ever been issued. I suspect the large drug conglomerates have much to do with these widespread laws, or perhaps it’s a viewpoint motivated by my latent paranoia. In any case, I didn’t have such a permit. Neither was I researching or producing antibiotics. Antibiotics are taken systemically. I was working on a topical antibacterial spray. It could in no way be classified as an antibiotic. After a week or so of play in the press the government abandoned its attempt to charge me under the ‘antibiotic crime laws’.”

Then, he says, the records for a security company he had started, had disappeared from government files and re-appeared without his name. As a result, weapons from this company, that were in his possession during the raid, were deemed illegally held. His property manager managed to produce the original documents and keep him out of prison. Then, he says they talked about charging him with hiring security guards without a license, which never happened. He says lawyers told him they were not aware of any law this would violate. “The list goes on,” he says.

After that, comes a post from Samantha. She tells her story about how she came to meet McAfee.

The next post is called “Punishment of the innocent“. Here, McAfee talks about how the police began a “systematic roundup” of his friends and associates, saying that the list, so far, includes his best friend, his caretaker, a cab driver, his bodyguard (and his wife), and his housekeeper. He concludes that post by saying, “The list will grow. I am asking all people of conscience to read this blog, especially the links in the ‘Background’ section, and see the ugly truth unfolding here. Speak out. Write your congressmen. Write the Prime Minister. Do what you can. These people are suffering and will continue to do so irrespective of my actions. They will become yet another bleak statistic in the web of injustice clutching the heart of this country.”

The next post talks about the police returning to his property over the weekend, searching it without a warrant. He followed that one up with a post called “Watchfulness“. He announced that he is offering a $25,000 reward for the capture of “the person or persons” responsible for Faull’s murder. In the post, he reveals that he’s been hiding out close to the property. He describes his disguise:

The first day I colored my full beard and my hair light grey- almost white. I darkened the skin of my face, neck and hands carefully with shoe polish and put on an LA Saints baseball cap with the brim facing backwards and tufts of the front of my hair sticking out unkempt through the band. I stuffed my cheeks with chewed bubble gum stuck to the outside of my upper and lower molars – making my face appear much fatter. I darkened and browned my front teeth. I stuffed a shaved down tampon deep into my right nostril and died the tip dark brown – giving my nose an awkward, lopsided, disgusting appearance. I put on a pair of ragged brown pants with holes patched and darned. I wore an old, ragged long sleeve shirt. I donned an old Guatemalan style sarape and toted a bag containing a variety of Guatemalan woven goods. I adjusted my posture so that I appeared a good six inches shorter than my actual height and slowly walked up and down the beach with a pronounced limp, pushing an old single speed bicycle and peddling my wares to tourists and reporters using a broken English with a heavy Spanish accent. On my second day, while peddling small wooden carvings, I nearly sold a dolphin carving to an Associated Press reporter standing at the edge of my dock. He was pulled away from my enticement by an urgent phone call.

McAfee says he spoke with Faull’s caretaker, who told them that he was the one who found Faull’s body, despite police having said it was his housekeeper. The caretaker told McAfee that Faull didn’t have a housekeeper, McAfee says. He then says he watched the police dig up his dogs who had been poisoned, cut off their heads, then rebury their bodies. Then, he watched the police search his property seven times. He says he got too close at one point, and was “angrily ordered to go away.”

Apparently his disguise was really, really good.

“On subsequent days using different disguises, I did the same general thing, one day selling tamales and burritos that I had purchased wholesale from a real vendor, on another pretending to be a drunk German tourist with a partially bandaged face and wearing speedo swimming trunks and a distasteful, oversized Hawaiian shirt and yelling loudly at anyone who would listen – ‘Leck mich um ausch!’,” he writes. “At 67 years of age it was quite a spectacle.”

After that, he says he discovered that the police were more concerned with finding him than catching Mr. Faul’s killer. “The most enduring and frequently passed rumor is that the killing was punishment for a soured real estate transaction. I did not know, until I heard the rumor that Mr. Faul was working for a local real estate company. No-one seems to know the true details of the transaction or the parties involved, but the police could easily discover the details if they were so inclined,” he writes.

In the next post, McAfee says the blog will continue even if he is captured, because he has pre-written enough stuff to keep it alive for at least a year. The admin, Chad Essley, will monitor comments, he says. Essley, he says, will also administer the reward and post any info received.

After that, there is another post talking about his views on love and women. “Sam, and others, can verify if they choose, that I am not foolish enough to believe that many young women could love a 67 year man,” he says. “Being loved does not interest me much. Loving does. I truly love, not with a desire to possess or control, but with compassion and empathy. I care immensely, about many people. What they may or may not feel for me is their own issue.”

As of the time of this writing, that’s the most recent post. Check back frequently or subscribe to the feed. It sounds like there is plenty more where this all came from.

  • John McAfee Is Watching Episodes Of Rawhide While Hiding From Police

I don’t know how much you’ve been keeping up with this saga, but earlier this week, John McAfee, the creator of the McAfee antivirus software, became a fugitive. His neighbor in Belize was murdered, and McAfee is wanted by the police for questioning. He has been in hiding, but has been communicating with Wired reporter Joshua Davis. Davis has been providing updates along the way.

    You can catch up here.

McAfee claims that he is innocent, but will not turn himself in because he believes he will be tortured by authorities. He told Davis about the disguise he has taken on, and that he has been sleeping on a lice-infested bed. At one point, he had apparently buried himself in the sand. On Wednesday, McAfee sent Davis an essay about Belize and its history of pirates, and called today’s Belize a “pirate haven”.

Anyhow, the latest update from Davis claims that McAfee has a television, and he has watched at least one episode of the old western show Rawhide.

Follow Joshua Davis on Twitter for the latest updates on McAfee.

  • From Hiding, McAfee Sends Essay About Pirates To Wired Reporter

The John McAfee saga just keeps getting more interesting by the hour.

In case you haven’t been paying attention, McAfee, the creator of the antivirus software of the same name (which is now owned by Intel), is in hiding as he is wanted by police in Belize for questioning, in connection with the murder of his neighbor Gregory Faull.

As he is in hiding, he has been frequently contacting Wired reporter Joshua Davis to share his side of the story. Davis has been providing the rest of us with updates along the way, via Twitter, audio, and of course Wired articles. The latest one from Davis comes as McAfee has sent him an essay, trying to frame the background of his story, and why is hiding rather than turning himself in.

The essay begins by discussing how Belize was founded by pirates, and essentially operates as a “pirate haven” today. He concludes the piece, by saying:

Over the next few days, I will tell my side of the sad story unfolding around me and tragically affecting my closest friends, many of which have been arrested and are currently being detained under the draconic laws enacted by the current Prime Minister.

Consider Amy. She was the girlfriend of Arthur, the leader of the Taylor Street Gang in Belize City. Arthur attempted to turn himself in to the police. His hands were handcuffed behind his back and he was then shot multiple times. Amy came to my home unannounced and requested asylum from the GSU (Gang Suppression Unit) shortly after Arthur’s murder. I had never seen her before and knew nothing about Arthur other than what I had read in the press. I gave her asylum.

This fact alone would be sufficient answer to my critics that insist that if I were innocent I would simply turn myself in. The list of people who have died while in the custody of Belizean police, from suffocating on their own vomit, hanging themselves, overdosing on drugs, being beaten to death by fellow inmates, being shot while trying to escape, etc. would fill a phone book from an average American town. It is a convenient method of silencing those whom the government deems undesirable.

Read the whole thing at Wired.

Meanwhile, according to another report from Davis, McAfee says he is currently in disguise, though he admitted the disguise he is wearing would probably make him look like a murderer. It also makes little sense why he would describe said disguise to a member of the press if he hopes not to get caught, and if he is actually in said disguise.

Either way, assuming he’s not apprehended soon, it sounds like we’ll be hearing more from him. Hopefully Davis will keep us all posted. He tweeted about a half hour ago that police have charged McAfee’s British bodyguard and his Belizean wife of possessing a firearm and ammunition without a license.

  • Report: McAfee Now Says He’s Disguised To Look Like A Murderer

It’s hard to believe this is real, but McAfee Antivirus creator John McAfee is still hiding from the police, and reportedly keeps calling Wired reporter Joshua Davis to check in on a “semi-hourly” basis.

Davis reports that McAfee claims to now be in disguise, with his eyebrows, beard, and mustache dyed black. Davis, who provided audio of McAfee’s calls before, quotes him as saying, “I have modified my appearance in a radical fashion. I’ll probably look like a murderer, unfortunately.”

    Wow.

It doesn’t seem very smart to call the press and share the disguise you’re in, when you’re hiding out from the police, so it seems fairly likely that this is not really his disguise, but who knows? This story is far past crazy at this point.

Davis has been tweeting about the calls regularly. You can keep up with his tweets in real time below:

McAfee says he has no intention of turning himself in. According to Davis, he also said that a police spokesperson only said he’s wanted for questioning, and not that he’s a suspect. Something tells me hiding from the police and disguising his appearance isn’t making him any less of a suspect.

According to David, who cites sources that aren’t McAfee himself, several of McAfee’s friends and associates have been detained by police.

  • Here’s Audio Of John McAfee As He Hides From Cops

John McAfee, who until this week was best known for creating the McAfee antivirus software, is wanted for murder in Belize. He claims to be innocent, but is in hiding as cops pursue him as the prime supsect in the killing of his neighbor. More on the story here.

As previously reported, McAfee has been calling Wired reporter Joshua Davis, and Davis has been tweeting about the calls as they happen. Davis has now posted the following audio of McAfee:

“I do not think I’m a psychopath,” he says.

Here’s Davis’ Twitter timeline, so you can follow his tweets in real time:

  • John McAfee Keeps Calling Wired Reporter, Wired Reporter Keeps Tweeting

As previously reported, John McAfee, the creator of the antivirus of the same name, is wanted by police in Belize as the prime suspect in the murder of his neighbor. McAfee has been calling Wired reporter Joshua Davis, sharing his side of the story. He says he’s innocent, by the way.

Apparently he keeps calling Davis, and Davis has been tweeting about the conversations as they occur. Here is a series of tweets form Davis. The first was from about 19 hours ago. The most recent is from 13 minutes ago.

    This is crazy.

  • McAfee Talks While In Hiding, Says He Didn’t Kill Man In Belize

John McAfee, the founder of McAfee Antivirus, is wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of a man in Belize. According to various reports, he is the prime suspect in the murder.

Wired reports that he is in hiding somewhere in the country, that he has been calling to give his side of the story, and that he claims to be innocent. Joshua Davis reports:

As Belizean police combed the property of expat antivirus pioneer John McAfee Sunday afternoon, McAfee was closer than they could have known. He’d seen them coming, and says he hid — burying himself in the sand with a cardboard box over his head so he could breathe. “It was extraordinarily uncomfortable,” he says, in an exclusive interview with Wired. “But they will kill me if they find me.”

McAfee, 67, is the prime suspect in a murder discovered Sunday morning in Belize. Convinced that he’ll be killed if he’s taken into custody for questioning, the millionaire antivirus pioneer has gone into hiding somewhere in the Central American nation, where he moved in 2008 to retire.

According to the report, McAfee said the only thing he knew about the shooting murder of his neighbor Gregory Faull, is that he heard he had been shot. McAfee claims that he thought maybe the killers(s) were coming after him, and mistook his neighbor for himself. He’s quoted as saying, “He’s dead. They killed him. It spooked me out.”

McAfee claims that his dogs (which Faull had complained about previously) had been poisoned on Friday night, but he blames Belizean authorities for their death.

Gizmodo broke the news that McAfee is wanted for murder on Monday, sharing the following official police statement:

    MURDER
On Sunday the 11th November, 2012 at 8:00am acting upon information received, San Pedro Police visited 5 ¾ miles North of San Pedro Town where they saw 52 year old U.S National Mr. GREGORY VIANT FAULL, of the said address, lying face up in a pool of blood with an apparent gunshot wound on the upper rear part of his head apparently dead. Initial investigation revealed that on the said date at 7:20am LUARA TUN, 39years, Belizean Housekeeper of Boca Del Rio Area, San Pedro Town went to the house of Mr. Faull to do her daily chores when she saw him laying inside of the hall motionless, Faull was last seen alive around 10:00pm on 10.11.12 and he lived alone. No signs of forced entry was seen, A (1) laptop computer brand and serial number unknown and (1) I-Phone was discovered missing. The body was found in the hall of the upper flat of the house. A single luger brand 9 mm expended shells was found at the first stairs leading up to the upper flat of the building. The body of Faull was taken to KHMH Morgue where it awaits a Post Mortem Examination. Police have not established a motive so far but are following several leads.

  • Antivirus Founder John McAfee Arrested in Belize

Antivirus Founder John McAfee Arrested in Belize

John McAfee, computer programmer and founder of the antivirus software bearing his name, was recently arrested in Belize, when a task force known at the Gang Suppression Unit broke down his door, after being tipped off about a weapons cache. McAfee contends that the raid surrounded a bigger political cause, due to the fact that he didn’t contribute any money to a known UDP Orange Walk politician.

During the raid, McAfee and 11 of his employees were arrested and detained, his research lab was ransacked, his dog was killed, and his passport was taken. He was charged with illegal weapons possession and unlicensed drug manufacturing. The drug manufacturing charge surrounds McAfee’s new biotech company called QuorumEx which is producing commercial, all-natural antibiotics based on anti-quorum sensing technology. Basically, drugs made from exotic plants.

McAfee made a statement on the matter:

“On Monday at six o’clock, I was awakened by the sound of a bullhorn, a megaphone. I went outside and saw about thirty GSU in full uniform, full dressed, automatic weapons, storming through the property and drive way. I went back inside, got some clothes on, I came out. I was told to put up my hands up against the wall as was eleven other people on the compound. We had about eleven people present at the time—five of them were women. I was told that they had a warrant to search property. They began, with sledge hammers, to break the doors of the buildings—none of them were locked, but they just went and broke them in any case. I was merely watching this. They confiscated my passport, all of the weapons we used for security on the compound, handcuffed me and everyone and for fourteen hours outside in the sun, I sat handcuffed without food or water. We got water around noon. At three o’clock we asked for food. We were told by the GSU, do we look like cooks to you. They murdered my dog in cold blood. That was the thing I think—it was a warning to us that this is serious; don’t mess with us. They threw things around, they stole things—it was unbelievable, unimaginable for a country that was supposedly a democratic country. I was arrested on a bogus charge of having an illegal firearm—a firearm without a license. At the very beginning of the day, one of the GSU soldiers, one of the GSU officers, took all of my firearm licenses and put them in his vest. When he took them out to check the firearms, this one was missing. They charged me for having a firearm without a license; took me to Belize City. Fortunately we had copies. We showed up later at the police station with the copies. Even then it was difficult to get out. I had to get the intervention of the American embassy to get released. By the time I got to Belize, it was sixteen hours. I slept until two a.m. on a concrete floor at the Queen’s Street Police Station until the embassy finally convinced someone to release me. They confiscated my passport and claimed they didn’t have it. The entire day was an incredible nightmare. This is clearly a military dictatorship where people are allowed to go and harass citizens based on rumor alone and treat them as if they are guilty before any evidence whatsoever is obtained. It is astonishing, it is beyond belief and I intended not to let this stand.”

It’s a good thing that MaAfee had backups of his weapons licenses.

Last year, Intel bought McAfee Antivirus for $7.68 billion. It’s not clear how much money McAfee actually has, and he is said to have been hit pretty hard by the recession. Though, it’s evident that it might be time to get out of Belize regardless.
