  • Miss Universe: Fans Create Dolls In Beauty Queen’s Likeness

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach has inspired two of her avid Filipino fans to create dolls in her likeness.

Ian Mendejar, a fan of the newly crowned Miss Universe, unveiled his Pia Wurtzbach doll on Instagram, complete with the blue gown similar to the one she wore during the finals.

Mendejar, who has already made three Pia dolls so far, said this is how he shows his gratitude toward Wurtzbach who made every Filipinos’ Christmas very special. Philippines has not had a Miss Universe in 42 years.

“@piawurtzbach gave me and all the Filipinos the best Christmas gift after winning the Miss Universe 2015 title and now it’s my time to give her a Christmas gift…” Mendejar wrote on his Instagram on Sunday, December 28.

“Hello Universe! Please welcome MISS UNIVERSE DOLL, a doll version of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach wearing an @albertandrada creation (amazing creation) made by me. This is actually my 4th Pia Doll. I hope you like it. Merry Christmas #PiaDoll #MissUniverseDoll #missuniverse2015,” Mendejar added.

His first Pia doll was inspired by the evening gown Wurtzbach wore at the Binibining Pilipinas pageant. He made “Pia Doll version 3.0,” which donned an outfit similar to Wurtzbach’s peach backless Star Magic Ball gown as well.

Mendejar has also made dolls for Miss Universe 2012 first runner-up Janine Tugonon and Miss Globe 2015 Ann Loraine Colis.

Oscar Antonio, another ardent fan of Wurtzbach’s, also created dolls as a tribute to the beauty queen. One of the dolls wore a red gown which resembles the evening dress Wurtzbach wore in the Miss Universe preliminaries. The other replica donned a blue gown, similar to the one she wore in Las Vegas, and wore the Miss Universe crown.

  • Miss Puerto Rico Posts Scathing Criticism Of Muslims On Social Media

Miss Puerto Rico Destiny Velez, 20, was suspended indefinitely by the Miss America Organization for her seemingly hateful rants against Muslims on Twitter.

Velez launched series of aggressive tweets aimed at filmmaker and activist Michael Moore on Thursday in which the beauty queen wrote all Muslims have done is “provided oil & terrorize this country and many others!!!!!!”

Moore protested in front of Trump Tower in New York last week wherein he held up a sign which read: “We are all Muslim” and shared it on social media with hashtag #WeAreAllMuslim.

Her fiery tweets and official Twitter account has since been taken down. Some of the controversial tweets that led to her suspension included: “There’s NO comparison between Jews, Christians & Muslims. Jews nor Christians have terrorizing agendas in their sacred books” and “If we are all the same then Muslims need to take off their napkins off of their heads cuz I feel offended by it.”

Miss Puerto Rico, who competed in Miss America 2016 in September, faced outrage from many Twitter users for her comments. The hashtags #verguenzaajena (embarrassment) and #nonosrepresentas (you don’t represent us) have been trending in Puerto Rico.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Miss Puerto Rico Organization announced its decision to suspend the 20-year-old beauty queen for her misconduct. “Miss Velez’s actions were in contradiction to the organization and therefore as a consequence of her actions, she has been suspended indefinitely.”

“The Miss Puerto Rico Organization will not tolerate any actions or behavior contrary to the Miss Puerto Rico Organization,” the statement continued.

The Organization also included an apology allegedly written by Velez, who reportedly disabled her Instagram and Tumblr accounts. Miss Puerto Rico wrote an apoligy to those she has offended with her words. She reiterated that she is an #UpStander and is against bullying.

  • Miss Austria Dies After Falling 100 Feet Off The Side Of Alps Mountain

A former Miss Austria met an unfortunate and sudden death after falling from the side of a mountain during her daily jog.

Twenty-six-year-old Ena Kadic had been jogging on Friday along the Bergisel Mountain in the Alps when she accidentally fell 100 feet to the steep ravine of the Sill River.

Shortly before Kadic lost consciousness, she was able to call her brother to inform him of the fall. Kadic was found by two students during a search with the Austrian beauty’s mother.

Rescuers arrived on the scene to give her first aid, but quickly brought her to a hospital in Innbruck via helicopter. Her condition remained critical until she finally succumbed to the multiple complications brought about by her grave injuries. She suffered serious head trauma as well as injuries to her lungs and pelvis before the passed away.

Authorities have launched an investigation to find out the reason for her fall. Kadic was reported to have been very familiar with the trail from where she had fallen and jogged there regularly.

Local police spokesman Stefan Eder said, “We don’t know exactly where she fell from. She could have fallen from the viewing platform or she could have fallen from the mountainside.”

Even though they have no reason to believe that there was foul play involved in the incident, police officials still plan to carry on with the investigation.

“There are no indications of foul play or that this was a suicide attempt,” Kontrollinspektor Eder added.

Kadic took the title of Miss Austria in 2013 and represented her country in the Miss World competition in that same year.

She was born in Bosnia, but spent her childhood and adult life in Austria.

  • Katherine Rees: Her Journey From Beauty Queen to Alleged Meth Dealer

Katherine Rees, a former Miss Nevada USA stripped of her title over racy photos, has been charged with four meth-related felonies this week.

The 30-year-old former beauty queen has faced how water before. Katherine Rees began her downfall when she was stripped of her crown over nude photos in 2006.

Rees is accused of trafficking in a controlled substance, sale of a controlled substance and two counts of conspiracy to violate the uniform controlled substances act.

According to court documents, Rees allegedly sold drugs to someone identified as “J. Peacock” in September 2014. She was later found with 5.3 grams of methamphetamine the next month.
A $50,000 arrest warrant for Katherine was issued on Wednesday.

The former beauty queen seems to keep getting herself into trouble. In 2008, she was charged with resisting arrest following a traffic arrest. In 2012, she managed to avoid drug paraphernalia and marijuana charges by pleading guilty to possession of a drug not for interstate commerce.

Rees has previously denied doing drugs despite the long rap sheet.

“I don’t do drugs,” Katherine Rees told Border Security: Australia’s Front Line after being questioned for cocaine and meth at Sydney airport in 2009. “I don’t use cocaine. I don’t use any kind of pill, no kind of Xanax, no anything. I don’t use anything.”

  • Jamie Lynn France: Rise And Fall Of An American Beauty Queen

Jamie Lynn France recently complained about her terrible fortune on her Facebook page.

France wrote, “When am I gonna get a break? I feel like it’s definitely my turn for some good karma to come my way soon. Pretty sure this has been the most painful year yet.”

Poor Jamie Lynn didn’t know that the worst was yet to come.

Only five years ago, things were much different for the aspiring beauty queen.

In 2009, the bright-eyed blonde was crowned Miss. Teen Oregon-World.

In a photograph shared by Keizer Police Department, members of the public are able to glimpse how Jamie Lynn France once was: a smiling, perky teenage girl who had her whole life ahead of her.

This photo, from several years ago, was shown side-by-side with how France looks today at age 23.

    And the difference is chilling.

Jamie Lynn France is virtually unrecognizable; her face filled with blemishes often found on those who have abused the drug methamphetamine over a lengthy period.

The bright, hopeful smile was gone from France’s face, replaced with a rather cynical smirk.

The transformation is so jarring that the Keizer Police Department used the photos of Jamie Lynn France as a PSA to the public:

The Keizer Police Department would like to take this opportunity to caution against the use of illegal controlled substances because of the terrible long-term effects to the user, their families and our communities.

Jamie Lynn France was busted at the Roadway Inn in Salem, Oregon with her drug dealer, 37-year-old Jarrod Thomas Wells.

It turned out that Wells had been under investigation by police for months. Law enforcement agents steadily gathered evidence for a planned drug bust.

In the end, France was nabbed along with Wells and his wife Erin.

The former beauty queen was found to be in possession of various illegal substances, including meth, heroin, and Suboxone.

France is currently being held on $30,000 bail.

One can only hope that this is the rock bottom that will allow Jamie Lynn France to successfully turn her life around.

  • Miss UMES Resigns Amid Scandal Following Arrest

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is short a campus queen this week. Porsha Simone Harvey, a native of Newark, Del., is no longer Miss University of Maryland Eastern Shore. She was dethroned due to questionable and inappropriate behaviors that were said to be unbecoming of her position.

Harvey’s troubles began back in mid-February when was charged by a member of campus police with engaging in “disruptive behavior”. The confrontation is said to have occurred when UMES police officer J. Barnes instructed Harvey to exit a crowded hallway.

Harvey reportedly struck the officer and yelled for him to “let go of her”. This alleged outburst resulted in Harvey being arrested for disorderly conduct and and failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order of a law enforcement officer.

Days later she was cited for possession of marijuana in court.

Harvey’s attorney, William Hall of Salisbury, Md. would not comment about the charges the young woman is facing. He said that Harvey herself would not be discussing the charges with members of the media.

These events seemed to reflect poorly on Harvey to such a degree that she was ordered to return her crown, sashes, and office keys and suspend any and all activities related to her UMES title.

The order for Harvey to end her reign immediately came in the form of sternly written letter to the 21-year-old student by the UMES Office of Campus Life.

The letter, obtained and published by the Daily Times, was written on Monday. The organization referred to Harvey’s recent behavior as “inconsistent with a UMES student and someone of [her] position.”

Prior to the recent scandal, Harvey had been a contestant in the Miss Delaware USA pageant. She was a member of the Cathedral Choir of Delaware and had even performed for former President George W. Bush with her choir.

  • Miss Venezuela: Lamentable Loss Impels Legal Change

    “It was a vile killing.”

This was Venezuelan Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez’s description of the slaying of Monica Spear and her ex-husband Monday night. The 2004 Miss Venezuela winner and her ex-husband Thomas Henry Berry had been driving with their five year old daughter along a poorly maintained road when their car hit sharp objects which punctured the tires. Subsequently, they were ambushed by gunmen who had planted the obstacles in the roadway.

In a country with one of the highest murder rates, such assaults are not uncommon.

However, the celebrity nature of this case has spotlighted even more of a rise in Venezuelan violence. When friends and coworkers of the late Spear stormed the office of President Nicolas Maduro, he swore to wage the full weight of the law on her murderers.

“The fight against violence has to involve all the authorities so the criminals know they’ll face the full rigour of the law, because we’ve had enough already,” said Interior Minister Rodriguez at a news conference. He vowed to “use everything we have, the police, the army, against those who will not go down the path of peace.” before stating that he had called an emergency meeting of the governors of Venezuela’s 23 states and 79 towns with the highest violence levels.

Monica certainly was more than a beauty queen and telenovela star.

She was described as “very spiritual” by President Maduro, served her community, and assisted a charity that helped teens with mental disabilities gain employment.

On Monday, however, any of these accomplishments or titles were irrelevant. She was just a young woman on a family vacation. She was a person whose life was brutally wrenched from those who loved her. She was mother to a young daughter who traumatically witnessed the loss of her parents and is currently recovering in hospital from a gunshot wound.

Some will mock the coverage of this story, stating that a celebrity’s life and death deserves no place in the news.

Many will argue that the public-figure magnifying glass is trivial and undeserved.

In most cases, they aren’t wrong. Also, the loved ones left behind likely don’t appreciate the press.

    (image)

Nothing can assuage the grief of Monica Spear’s and her ex-husband’s friends and family. However, the hope is that the highly publicized nature of this tragedy will serve as more than some viral trend on which the masses emotionally feast and forget next week. With any luck, the collective upset over this senseless loss will at the very least elicit continued action from Venezuelan authorities. That way, not only can Spear be avenged. Perhaps right action might prevent the potential victimization of countless others during this rise in Venezuelan violence.

My healing thoughts go out the daughter, friends, and families of Monica and Thomas.

  • Kendra McKenzie Gill: Bombshell or Bomber?

Kendra McKenzie Gill, a beauty queen from Utah, has been booked on suspicion of throwing homemade bombs out of a car in what one writer has referred to as the case of “beauty and the bombs.”

To be fair, it’s not as much of a national security issue as it might sound. Gill, recently crowned Miss Riverton, Utah, is accused of detonating incendiary devices after being arrested on Saturday. She and three friends have apparently admitted to buying plastic bottles, aluminum foil, and household chemicals and using these ingredients to concoct rudimentary bombs that they threw into residential yards. Nine incidents were reported, though nobody was reported injured.

The others arrested were John Patrick Reagh, Shanna Marie Smith, and Bryce Christopher Stone. Stone reportedly told police that the four of them had been “pranking.”

Gill had won a $2,000 scholarship at the June 8 Miss Riverton competition and was set to compete in the next Miss Utah pageant in October. Riverton is a town of approximately 40,000 people, 20 miles south of Salt Lake City.

While the nature of the devices is unclear, the fact that the group reportedly purchased aluminum foil suggests that they were so-called “works” bombs, made from combining drain cleaner and foil in a plastic bottle. A chemical reaction created by the drain cleaner and foil results in a build-up of gas that causes the plastic bottle to explode.

A warning from the Washtenaw County Sheriff in Ann Arbor, Michigan, notes that “works bombs” are dangerous and can result in “second- or third-degree burns or blindness.” On June 6, 2009, KCTV in Kansas City, Kansas, reported that such a device exploded in a mailbox, blowing it from its base.

Though the bombs are powerful and easy to make, authorities caution that they are dangerous, especially insofar as they can potentially sit dormant for some time, injuring unsuspecting passers-by or curious kids/pets when they eventually do explode.
