  • Katherine Heigl, Alexis Bledel: Gay Marriage Portrayed in New Film On Heels of Supreme Court’s Same-Sex Marriage Decision

Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel come out as lesbian lovers in a new film called Jenny’s Wedding, which is set to hit theaters on July 31st. Heigl plays Jenny, who initially shocks her parents when she announces she’s gay and planning to marry her roommate Kitty–played by Alexis Bledel.

A new trailer for Jenny’s Wedding was released quite coincidentally near the Supreme Court’s decision just over a week ago to allow same-sex marriages in all 50 states.

The film deals with the issue of same-sex marriage–and the way Jenny’s family was caught blindsided–in a very thought-provoking, gentle way.

Directed by Mary Agnes Donoghue, who wrote the screenplays for both White Oleander and Beaches, Jenny’s Wedding co-stars Tom Wilkinson and Linda Emond as Jenny’s parents.

Most parents dream of the day their little girl will walk down the aisle and marry the man of their dreams. Jenny’s Wedding watches those dreams shatter in Wilkinson and Emond’s characters as Katherine Heigl’s character makes her two bold announcements, but also watches the pieces very sensitively come back together in something that emerges as beautiful–not merely tolerant.

“Kitty and I want to get married, Mom,” Katherine Heigl, as Jenny, tells her mother.

“You’re marrying your roommate?” Linda Emond’s character asks.

“She’s not my roommate, Mom,” Katherine Heigl replies.

Katherine Heigl is best known for her role as Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy, and recently starred on NBC in State of Affairs. Alexis Bledel is best known for her role as Rory Gilmore in the long-running TV series The Gilmore Girls.

Will you be checking out Jenny’s Wedding when it opens at the box office on July 31st?

  • Huge Great White Shark Tagged In Australia

Huge Great White Shark Tagged In Australia

Great white sharks are the ultimate predators of the sea and creatures that many people fear. While great white sharks are only responsible for a small number of shark attacks, they are known as one of the largest and most ferocious shark species.

Huge great white sharks have recently been spotted near popular beach areas in Australia and other parks of the world. When a great white shark named Joan of Shark was spotted by fishermen near Ellen Cove in Australia, the beaches were closed and nobody was allowed to enter the water until the shark moved on.

Joan of Shark had been tagged and can be tracked with a GPS. This allows researchers to know the whereabouts of the shark at all times. The tracking device not only helps keep beachgoers safe, it also allows the researchers to learn more about great white sharks and their habits. The shark was first shot with a temporary tag but was later caught and fitted with a more permanent one in her stomach that will allow researchers to track her for at least 10 years.

Joan of Shark is the largest shark to be tagged and researchers are anxious to study her. She is more than 16 feet long and is estimated to weigh 1.6 tons.

“It is the first one we have caught of breeding size,” Mark Kleeman, Shark Monitoring Network project manager said. “It had signs of mating scars, with bites down one side.”

“This is very exciting and potentially a world first, he continued. It is something we have been striving for and it is great to prove we can handle an animal of that size. The main thing is that tracking larger animals opens up a whole new world. Lots of juveniles have been tagged, but to have a fully-mature female and get 10 years of data out of it is a big thing for us. We are excited by the potential of what this shark can give us.”

The researchers believe that Joan of Shark will soon move away from the beaches and out to deeper waters. They claim that she is only in the area because she could sense the distress signals of a large humpback whale which was beached earlier in the week and later died. They also warn that more sharks could come into the area over the next few days because of the dead whale.

What do you think researchers will learn about the newly tagged great white shark?

  • Shark Photobomb, Just When You Thought it Was Safe!

Some types of sharks such as great whites have a reputation for being fierce predators, the type that can easily capture prey. So, when a shark is noticed as part of the backdrop within a family picture after-the-fact, surprise is one expected emotion. On Friday, June Emerson snapped photos of her family enjoying time at Manhattan Beach. Emerson’s 12-year-old son Quinn is shown surfing in one of the photos in front of what appears to be an image of either a shark or a dolphin.

According to June Emerson, there are many who have concluded that the marine creature was a shark. “It was quite a shock to see [the photo].” Emerson said before adding, “Many local surfers and lifeguards have seen this and believe it to be a shark. Of course, I told my kids it was a dolphin, as we live at the beach and are in the waters here almost daily.”

The thought of being within feet of a shark may sound exciting and thrilling to some; however, Emerson shared a different take on the experience when interviewed by CBS2/KCAL9. “I’m not sure what it was, but it definitely scared me when I thought it might be a shark,” she said.

According to the Shark Research Committee, sharks are a diverse species. “Some sharks give live birth, some lay eggs. Some are carnivores and others survive on phytoplankton and zooplankton. Some sharks do not reach maturity until they are more than 10 years of age,” the Shark Research Committee website explains. Humans have entered the domain of many types of sharks.

The Shark Research Committee details three types of known shark encounters including: an unprovoked shark attack distinguished by an aggressive “striking” or display, a shark encounter where the shark circles the human without leading to any sort of violence, and white shark predation that involves the shark hunting down, capturing, and eating prey.
