  • Lego Batman 2 Trailer Shows Off Open-World Gameplay

A new trailer for Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes has been released, and it showcases the title’s open-world gameplay and voice acting. According to the trailer, which was uploaded to YouTube by user OfficialGaminGuys, Lego Batman 2 open world gameplay will feature 500 square miles of a Lego Gotham City to Explore.

Newer Lego games (such as the Harry Potter Lego games, which feature an explorable Hogwarts Castle) have featured elements of exploratory, open-world gameplay. Not to this extent, though. The Lego website for Lego Batman 2 states that players will be able to explore Gotham City using the Batmobile and Batwing.

Also, players will presumably be able to fly around the city as Superman, since Batman won’t be the only super hero in the game. As seen in the trailer above, most of the Justice League is on board to fight The Joker and Lex Luthor. In addition to the Batman-centered heroes and villains featured in the first Lego Batman game, Lego Batman 2 includes Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, and Superman, among others.

In a major change from previous lego games, voice work has been recorded for the characters in the game. Previously, characters in Lego games simply intimated and made various sounds to convey the story. It seems the lego franchise is growing up, but voice acting and sandbox gameplay similar to its older brother Arkham City could change Lego Batman 2 from a silly, casual Lego game into something more serious. We’ll have to wait until the game’s June 19 release date to find out. It is unknown whether the upcoming Lord of the Rings Lego Games will feature similar voice acting or an explorable Middle-Earth.

  • DC Superheroes Promote Tourism With New Posters

Ever wondered what your favorite super heroes do when they are in costume but not saving the world? Do they only hang out in the Hall of Justice? Seems king of weird to have a bunch of people in tights sitting around and not waiting for a gymnastics meet. What if they helped their home cities promote the tourism industry?

This what Dan, a “graphic designer and lovable geek,” from London has done. He put the 5 of the greatest superheroes in the DC universe in art deco style tourism posters. I think the Wonder Woman one is funny because who would want to go to an island of all women except for men, but if men go to the island they are killed? CHeck out the posters and see for yourself if they make you want to go to those cities:

  • Super Heroes And Villains Hug It Out

Super Heroes And Villains Hug It Out

The relationship that heroes share with their arch rivals is sometimes complicated. Depending on the universe or continuity they are brothers, or partners, or equals that have a falling out. Sometimes they are just plain enemies from day one. What if they put aside their differences in wanting to kill each other for just one moment. What if, for one moment, they took that old saying literally, “brothers don’t shake hands, brothers gotta hug!

An artist from Frederick, Maryland named Mike Joos has captured this moment perfectly with classic characters hugging out like Optimus Prime and Megatron, and Superman and Lex Luthor. None really get better than Alf and the Cats hugging it out. All of the prints are available to purchase over at Mike Joos’ Etsy store. All of these are available in a 5×7 print and go for $17.50 with shipping included.

  • Star Wars Abstract Geek Art Makes Blockheads Of Us All

Abstract art has always made me think, “What the heck was that guy thinking?” But when you put things like Superman and Darth Vader into paintings of that same style, it somehow immediately make sense. Like I can look at it and think, “Now I get it.”

Tommervik has captured the essence of his superhero and geek images in his gallery of artwork over at deviantART. It doesn’t stop there though. He has also put into his perspective great things like the Muppets, Hockey, and Pee Wee Herman.

These are all oil paintings and all you see here are for sale. They are a little expensive compared to the normal “geek art” that I usually cover, but the quality is also a little better.

  • Dark Knight Rises T-Shirt Contest Announces Winner

Way back on March 20th it was announced that there was going to be a contest to see who could design the best t-shirt inspired by the upcoming summer blockbuster “The Dark Knight Rises”. The kicker? Christopher Nolan, the director of “The Dark Knight Rises,” was going to be one of the judges. All of the finalists were put up to a vote and then sent to Nolan and his team to decide what was the best one. Here are the finalists:

    Hello Mr. Wayne by SPYKEEE

    (image)

Come From The Dark by Geno75

    (image)

    ARISE by silentOp

    (image)

    BANE by MR-NICOLO

    (image)

    The Rising Shadow by Studio8Worx

    (image)

    The winner?

That right folks, Hello Mr. Wayne by SPYKEEE was selected as the winner. The guys at Design By Humans Interviewed him about winning this contest.

They asked him about his design and the inspiration for it: “The feel that I was after for this was something to represent the Batman trilogy movies. The movies that Christopher Nolan made were very dark and gritty, so I wanted to apply that feel to the illustration. Growing up I was a real big fan of the comics and I really liked it when they portrayed batman to be a more dark and intense character.:

Also they wanted to know what he was going to do with his winnings: “Part of it will go into the bank, and a part of it will be spent on art stuff or things that I need to polish my drawing skills like a new laptop, books and a better graphic tablet. The other part will be for expenses and some of it will be for fun. A vacation also sounds nice.”

The guy seems pretty humble about winning, but we all know inside all he is saying over and over is BOOYAH SUCKA!

All of the work is available to purchase from DBH, and congrats to all!

  • The Dark Knight Rises Trailer #3 Arrives Online

Grab a clean pair of underwear, fanboys, because the third trailer for Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated summer blockbuster “The Dark Knight Rises” has made its way online. I have nimbly avoided most of the behind-the-scenes footage for the flick simply because I don’t want anything ruined by the time I purchase a ticket and take my seat inside that darkened theater. In fact, besides the teaser, this is the first trailer for the flick I’ve watched. Considering the vast number of spoilers that seem to be incorporated into previews these days, I’m very selective which trailers I watch. This time, however, I’ve made an exception to the rule.

The latest trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” is fairly impressive. The atmosphere is nice and moody, which, in my opinion, is spot-on. The coolest thing about Nolan’s interpretation of the Batman franchise is that his endeavors don’t feel like superhero movies. There’s something a bit more human, a tad more epic and real, going on beneath the costumes, the gadgets, and the numerous action set pieces. These elements help separate the franchise from other comic book movies, and the final entry in the series looks emotional, intense, and epic.

If you’re late to the party, here’s what the film is about:

Eight years after Batman took the fall for Two Face’s crimes, a new terrorist leader, Bane overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that brands him an enemy.

When you have a few minutes to spare this morning, dim the lights, hold your calls, and have a look at what’s in store for the Caped Crusader this summer. “The Dark Knight Rises”, which stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Marion Cotillard, opens on July 20th.

  • Superhero Film Alphabet Smashes Other Alphabets

Not all superheros are Reed Richards, but I’m sure that most of them can at least spell right? The villains? I’m not so sure. Just in case they can’t spell, a chart was made to help them learn the alphabet. SOme of the letters are easy, others are incredibly difficult.

A is for Amazing Spiderman, B is for Batman, C is for Captain America, D is for Daredevil, E is for Electra, F is for Fantastic Four, G is for Green Lantern, H is for Hellboy, I is for Iron Man, J is for ????, K is for Kickass, L is for League Of Extraordinary Gentleman, M is for Meteor Man, N is for ????, O is for ????, P is for Punisher, Q is for Quicksilver, R is for Robocop, S is for Superman, T is for TMNT, U is for Unbreakable, V is for Venom, W is for Wasp, X is for X-Men, Y is for ????, Z is for ?????. Can someone please help us figure these other ones out?

  • Batman: Arkham City GOTY Edition Launches May 29

It’s common practice to release game of the year editions of last year’s biggest blockbusters. It’s usually an excuse to repackage the game with some DLC and sell it again for the $60 premium that makes the publisher more money. I personally don’t think many games deserve that kind of treatment, but I’m willing to make an exception for Batman: Arkham City.

Warner Bros. Entertainment announced today that Batman: Arkham City will have its own GOTY edition released on May 29. It will come with all the of the previously released DLC including the Catwoman, Robin and Nightwing challenge packs. It will also have all of the awesome character skins that were released for Batman including my personal favorite, the Batman: The Animated Series costume.

On top of this package, the GOTY edition will also come with a new single-player expansion pack called Harley Quinn’s Revenge that pits Batman and Robin against the best lady villain in comics and gaming. Warner Bros. says the expansion has over two hours of new content and it will tie up all the loose ends that were left after the end of Arkham City.

Here’s the full breakdown of all the content included in the GOTY edition:

Maps: Wayne Manor, Main Hall, Freight Train, Black Mask, The Joker’s Carnival, Iceberg Long, and Batcave

Playable Characters: Catwoman, Robin and Nightwing

Skins: 1970s Batsuit, Year One Batman, The Dark Knight Returns, Earth One Batman, Batman Beyond Batman, Animated Batman, Sinestro Corps Batman, Long Halloween Catwoman, Animated Catwoman, Animated Robin, Red Robin and Animated Nightwing

If you, like me, already own the fantastic Batman simulator that is Arkham City, the Harley Quinn DLC will be available on May 29 on PSN and May 30 on Xbox Live according to Sarah Wellock, Rocksteady Studio’s Community Manager. She also revealed that the standalone pack will cost $10.

Batman: Arkam City GOTY Edition will be available on Xbox 360 and PS3 on May 29. Wellock confirmed that a PC version is in the works with details forthcoming.

Check out the trailer below to get your first look at Harley Quinn’s Revenge. Just seeing it makes me want to go reinstall Arkham City for a fresh run before it comes out.

  • New The Dark Knight Rises Trailer To Assemble With The Avengers

New The Dark Knight Rises Trailer To Assemble With The Avengers

As if you needed another excuse to go see The Avengers… What we have is Warner Brothers announcing they’re plans to release another full-length trailer for The Dark Knight Rises when The Avengers movie hits the theater on May 4th. The collective at NolanFans.com, a site dedicated to all things Chris Nolan, noticed the upcoming announcement on Warner Brothers’ site, which confirms the upcoming trailer’s existence, as well as the movie its attached to.

The Avengers (2D/3D): The Dark Knight Rises (TR3-2D) New Version

When you couple the third trailer’s announcement with the news that TDKR will feature over an hour of IMAX footage, your hype meter for Nolan’s next installment of his Batman sage should be increasing exponentially. Here are some details concerning the IMAX footage, courtesy of the Wall Street Journal:

When Mr. Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” opens July 20, it will contain the most IMAX footage ever for a Hollywood feature, more than one hour’s worth… “There was a huge irony that we were told it would be too difficult to shoot a Hollywood movie on IMAX when we had this gigantic camera department, grips, electric, hundreds of people working for us,” says [Nolan], whose agreement to direct “The Dark Knight” was contingent on Warner Bros. allowing him to shoot the film in IMAX. “These were cameras that had been to the top of Mount Everest, to the bottom of the ocean and into outer space, but people thought we couldn’t make a feature film. It was absurd.”

In order to tide you over until The Avengers hits the theaters, with its TDKR trailer attached, here’s the first full-length version, as well as its Lego counterpart:

  • The Avengers Actor Defends Superhero Movies

    (image)

Superhero movies are up in the air with serious movie buffs as far as the seriousness of the art. Are they in fact art? Or ar they just a ploy by the studio to make a quick buck? For whatever reason, the non-comic movie fans like to look at films like Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Spiderman 3, and say “see? terrible movies!” They do not want to look at The Dark Knight and the increadible Joker played by Heath Leger. They don’t want to look at the classically trained Christopher Reeves playing Superman.

Well actor Tom Hiddleston, who plays villain Loki in this summers “The Avengers“, has something to say about all of this in a recent blog post he made for the Guardian in England. In the post he talks about his personal childhood with superheros saying: “I grew up watching Superman. As a child, when I first learned to dive into a swimming pool, I wasn’t diving, I was flying, like Superman. I used to dream of rescuing a girl I had a crush on (my Lois Lane) from a playground bully (General Zod). Reeve, to my mind, was the first real superhero.”

He goes on to explain that “Actors in any capacity, artists of any stripe, are inspired by their curiosity, by their desire to explore all quarters of life, in light and in dark, and reflect what they find in their work. Artists instinctively want to reflect humanity, their own and each other’s, in all its intermittent virtue and vitality, frailty and fallibility.” This is the reason Christopher Reeves chose to play Superman even though his contemporaries on broadway mocked him.

As far as how superheros are perfect characters to play, he explains that “The Hulk is the perfect metaphor for our fear of anger; its destructive consequences, its consuming fire. There’s not a soul on this earth who hasn’t wanted to “Hulk smash” something in their lives. And when the heat of rage cools, all that we are left with is shame and regret. Bruce Banner, the Hulk’s humble alter ego, is as appalled by his anger as we are. That other superhero Bruce – Wayne – is the superhero-Hamlet: a brooding soul, misunderstood, alone, for ever condemned to avenge the unjust murder of his parents. Captain America is a poster boy for martial heroism in military combat: the natural leader, the war hero. Spider-Man is the eternal adolescent – Peter Parker’s arachnid counterpart is an embodiment of his best-kept secret – his independent thought and power.”

  • “Beware the Batman” Teaser Trailer Now Online

Cartoon Network has been airing a promo for their upcoming animated Batman series entitled “Beware the Batman“. The series is set to premiere sometime later this year, and will be the first Batman series to utilize full CGI visuals. Below you’ll find the shows official synopsis followed the promo we mentioned earlier.

A cool, new take on the classic Dark Knight franchise, Beware the Batman incorporates Batman’s core characters with a rogues gallery of new villains not previously seen in animated form. Along with backup from ex-secret agent Alfred and lethal swordstress Katana, the Dark Knight faces the twisted machinations of Gotham City’s criminal underworld led by the likes of Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, this action-packed detective thriller deftly redefines what we have come to know as a “Batman show.” Featuring cutting-edge CGI visuals to match the intricate twists and turns of the narrative, Batman steps out of the shadows and into the spotlight for an entirely new generation of fans. With WBA’s Sam Register executive producing, and Batman Beyond’s Glen Murakami and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated’s Mitch Watson producing, Beware the Batman, based on characters from DC Comics, is coming soon to Cartoon Network!

I’m trying hard to not to be to critical of the whole series based off this one promo… but it just looks so cheap. Anyways, what are your thoughts on the promo? Let us know in the comment area below.

Brilliant artists are great. Brilliant artists that make their own renditions of sci-fi, comic book, and video game characters deserve medals. Rob Duenas is one of these gems that makes great art based on gaming and comics. A few weeks ago he made these great drawings and he is now back for more.

This time he has created a collection that he calls “Saucy Superheroes.” You’ll have to see the great drawings to believe them. They feature everything from Batman and Wolverine, to Samus Aran and Super Girl. Here some of my favorites of the great drawings:

  • The Dark Knight Rises Trailer… In LEGO

File this under “awesome.” If you have a “badass” drawer, you might want to put it there, too. As you’re probably well aware of already, perhaps the most anticipated movie of the year–The Dark Knight Rises–is getting closer and closer to its July 20th release date. One area that would never miss out on such an event are web geeks all over the world. To illustrate this point, we’ve already seen a number of fan creations, including someone taking a stab at the closing credits.

Now we have *LEGO’s take on the full-length TDKR trailer, stop-motion style, and man does it deliver. The asterisk before the “LEGO” indicates the actually company is not responsible for the film, although, as you can clearly see, the lego action figures are the stars of the fan trailer.

Created by ParanickFilmz, the video was uploaded on March 16, and has already amassed almost 140,000 views. The reception has been positive as well, something the 1540 likes versus 14 dislikes indicates quite nicely.

Much to its credit, the Lego trailer features some CGI to go along with the stop motion, giving us an idea of just how far fan-flick making has truly come. Plus, while they may not have made it, the actual LEGO company is in full support of fan creations like this. The video is featured on REBRICK, a LEGO site that invites fans to showcase their creations.

In a world where the SOPA/PIPA/ACTA specter is hanging over everyone’s heads, it’s nice to see a company actually embrace such creativity. It’s almost as if LEGO realized these fan efforts only help solidify their already-powerful brand. Amazing, I know.

Who knows? Maybe one day, the entertainment industry will follow suit.

  • Sheldon Moldoff Perishes, Immortalized as a Titan of Golden Age of Comics Via Tweets

Batman artist Sheldon Moldoff passed away from kidney failure on February 29th at the age of 91.

Moldoff started his career as a freelancer for DC Comics when he was only 17 years old. DC Comics released a statement saluting his accomplishments.

Historian and writer, Mark Evanier, covered Moldoff’s death on his blog and bulleted his most notable accomplishments.

    (image)

Moldoff also went on to “create his own pre-code horror comics including “This Magazine Is Haunted” and “Strange Suspense Stories” for Fawcett Comics before teaming with Batman creator Bob Kane’s shop in 1953.” Shelly died swearing that Kane remained ignorant about the amount of work he did for Batman in his glory days (late 30s & 40s); Muldoff had signed Kane’s name to many of his masterpieces under contract so he could provide for his family. He inked characters including Bat-Girl, Mister Freeze, Poison Ivy, Ace The Bathound, The Mermaid Batman, and Zebra Batman while receiving an insufficient amount of credit.

Moldoff was eventually pushed out of DC in 1967 because Kane wanted to switch the line to a more modern look. He continued to work on occasional Batman projects and continued to contribute to a variety of comices. He leaves this world known as one of the greats of the Golden Age of Comics and a kind family man.

  • Bane, The Dark Knight Rises Villian’s Voice Gets a Twitter Account

Christopher Nolan’s Batman movie franchise has been a tentpole for Warner Brothers these past six years, and nothing looks to stop the third in the series, The Dark Knight Rises. However, one element of the Dark Knight Rises prologue sneak peek has caused a divide for those looking forward to the film – Bane’s voice.

Many who have watched the prologue have complained they can’t hear what Bane is saying because of his muffled and garbled voice. There are those who have defended the effect, telling people to simply pay attention and try to listen. All of the hype has led to a swell of controversy, which has manifested in parody videos.

While many have gotten a laugh at the effect and the controversy surrounding it, the executives at WB are taking the problem seriously. According to Hollywood Reporter, sources involved in the movie say that WB asked Nolan to alter the effect so people would be able to understand Bane. The director said there are plans to alter it some, but will not do a complete re-work.

Chris wants the audience to catch up and participate rather than push everything at them. He doesn’t dumb things down

The response on Twitter has been mixed, with many people simply making fun of the effect.

Finally, we end with a somber, but effective note. What we have are four public service announcements against methamphetamine, and when you consider the director’s approach, it’s no wonder they are so damn effective, if not completely uncomfortable:

No, those may not be the most comfortable videos ever created, but that uneasiness is what helps make the message so very effective.

  • New Dark Knight Rises Trailer Promises S&M, Batman Working At Walmart

Who is excited for next summer’s most anticipated film? I know, I’m super stoked about Men In Black III as well.

Another film I’m also pretty anxious for is the finale of Christopher Nolan’s Batman revamp, The Dark Knight Rises. Bane? Awesome. Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Awesome. Anne Hathaway as Catwoman? Meh. Not everything can be perfect, right?

The internet buzz for the upcoming Batman film is unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed. People are itching for any little bit of exclusive content – a sneak peak, an on-set photo, or casting gossip.

The people at Warner Bros have employed social media to help grow the excitement even more. In May, a viral campaign was launched that allowed fans to uncover the first photo of Tom Hardy as the villain Bane using Twitter reaction.

Users simply tweeted the hashtag #thefirerises and the image was revealed piece by piece.

In June another campaign was launched involving mysterious YouTube videos of chaos after an Arkham Asylum breakout and broadcasts from Gotham Cable News. Although incredibly well made, these are now thought of as clever fan-made promotions.

Still, those videos created quite a stir for the film when they were released.

On the heels of the official TDKR teaser trailer being released along with the new Harry Potter film, a new trailer has emerged.

This new trailer is full of the same mystery and suspense as the teaser trailer, except it’s animated. And is the strangest thing I’ve ever seen.

Taiwanese animation company NMA has released their own “The Dark Knight Rises Trailer” today. You might know them from such classics as Lulzsec takes down the CIA, Antonin Scalia shoots guns with children and The Winklevii Canoe gets blown up by Mark Zuckerberg’s cannon fire.

“Looking forward to the final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy? We are too. Here’s an ode to Christopher Nolan’s best work,” they say about this new video.

What follows is a very strange take on the trilogy conclusion – one involving a stock market crash, a lot of dreaming, and an unforgettable S&M scene with Catwoman and Robin.

Keep an eye out for the Memento and Inception references. Enjoy:

And to cleanse your palate, here is the real teaser trailer for TDKR:

  • The Dark Knight Rises Viral Campaign Heats Up

Movie marketing strategy is being based more and more on viral content these days. One of the best examples of this is with Christopher Nolan’s revamp of the Batman series. Some new videos have surfaced that may give us a brief look into the upcoming third installment, The Dark Knight Rises.

The Dark Knight was a landmark in viral marketing. Whysoserious.com gained a lot of attention when it used the scavenger hunt concept to unlock a teaser trailer and a reveal pic of Heath Ledger as the Joker in the film. The viral campaign “I believe in Harvey Dent” was also employed to generate buzz about the inclusion of Two-Face in the film.

A couple weeks ago, The Dark Knight Rises‘ (TDKR) viral campaign began on Twitter, as the account @thefirerises revealed a picture, pixel by pixel, of TDKR’s new villian, Bane. Pixels were removed, one by one, by tweets containing the hashtag #thefirerises. The photo revealed keeps in line with the mysterious hyper-realism of Nolan’s revamp.

Now, the campaign has taken another step – this time with YouTube videos. On the YouTube Channel entitled “TheFireRises,” a few short videos have been posted. 419 shows grainy footage of a burning cab car and a burning building. It’s set to some pretty dramatic chanting. Outbreak looks to be footage from inside a prison (or asylum!), with orange jump-suited people with black bags over their heads. The video closes with a first person view of vehicle weaving through traffic on an underpass. GCN is the most telling, showing Gotham Cable News reporter Mike Engel (Anthony Michael Hall) reporting on an “Arkham Breakout.”

The final video, GCN, links at the end to a Facebook page for The Fire Rises. On this page, we find a picture of Matthew Modine with the name “Nixon” behind him. Modine is signed on to TDKR, and it is rumored that he will play a politician named Nixon.

Is this all clever marketing by the folks at Warner Bros? Have some overzealous and dubious fans created these videos, making them seem like they are a part of the film? If so, it’s quite impressive as the videos are pretty damn cool. Entertainment Weekly reached out to Warner Bro for a comment but only got a “no comment at this time” in response.

Are these legit viral vids, detailing plot points of the upcoming TDKR? Will there be an Arkham breakout? Will Gotham smolder as the trilogy comes to a close? Let us know what you think.
