  • Eddie Yost Dies at 86, Baseball’s “Walking Man”

If you are a fan of classic baseball history, I am sure you are aware of who Eddie Yost was. Baseball’s “Walking Man” who played for various professional baseball teams, such as the Washington Senators, the Detroit Tigers, and the Los Angeles Angels.

Even though Yost became a baseball superstar, he never actually participated in any minor league positions. Earlier in Yost’s career, he signed up as a free agent with the Washington Senators (now the Minnesota Twins) in 1944, and then later started to play professionally with the Washington Senators at the age of 17. A year later, Yost joined the U.S. Army, but then returned to baseball with the Washington Senators in 1946.

Yost became a very talented baseball player. From 1949 to 1955, Yost was involved 829 consecutive games for the Washington Senators, which was the ninth-longest consecutive game streak recorded in MLB history, and also gave Yost a lot of press for this victory.

In 1958, Yost was traded from the Washington Senators to the Detroit Tigers, spending two years with the team until he was selected by the Los Angeles Angels during the 1961 American League expansion draft.

Retiring from playing professionally in 1962, Yost became involved with coaching. For a short period of time, Yost coached the Los Angeles Angels, and then moved back to Washington for the position of third-base coach up until 1968, when Yost became the third-base coach for the Mets, ending his coaching career with the Boston Red Sox in 1984.

The reason why Yost was nicknamed the “Walking Man” was because of the various bases on balls he drew.

Eddie Yost died on Tuesday October 16th of 2012 at the age of 86. The cause of his death was due to a heart-related illness.

Many fans of Yost’s talent have posted their respects on Twitter:

  • Sammi Kane Kraft Dies at 20, “Bad News Bears” Star

The entertainment and baseball industries say goodbye to a young shining star who was just getting started in her career. Sammi Kane Kraft, a talented child actor from New Jersey, has died.

Sammi Kane Kraft was very proficient in athletics and baseball. Her talents with these helped land her an acting role in the 2005 remake of Bad News Bears, a story about Thornton, a little league coach who attempts to turn his team of misfits into champions. In this remake, Kraft performed the role of Amanda Whurlitzer, who was performed by Tatum O’Neal in the original movie.

Apart from her acting career, she also wanted to always take her baseball triumphs to the next level. Kraft competed in the Junior Olympics, and wanted to be involved in the Olympic Games, telling from the quote below from IMDb:

“I love acting, but my real long-term goal is to compete in the Olympics.”

Unfortunately, Sammi Kane Kraft died on Tuesday, October 9th, 2012, after being involved in a car accident while being a passenger in a speeding car of a drunk driver on the 10 Freeway in Los Angeles (source: Los Angeles Times). Many fans of Kraft’s budding career have left their respects via Twitter:

  • Johnny Pesky Dies, Twitter Remembers Him Fondly

Red Sox legend Jonny Pesky has passed away, at the age of 92, and Twitter users are paying their respects with seemingly nothing but nice things to say about the man.

Pesky, known as Mr. Red Sox, and “The Needle,” played shortstop and third base in the Majors through the 40s and early 50s, though he took a “break” from 1943-1945 to serve in World War II.

Pesky, born John Michael Paveskovich, went on to become a manager and coach for the Red Sox. He also played for the Detroit Tigers and Washington Senators late in his playing career.

He was an all star in 1946, and his Red Sox jersey, #6, went on to be retired.

  • Padres Ball Girl Makes a Great Catch and Becomes a YouTube Hit

We have all seen the plays when there is a foul ball hit and the ball person who is on either side of the field to help shag in between foul balls tries to get to the ball and ends up falling down. It happens all the time in San Francisco because they only use senior citizens to do the deed. Some ball parks use attractive young ladies to go get the ball off the field.

Lisa the ball girl went one step further and took a stab at a line drive foul ball that was heading right towards a fan and caught it! It was a great play that got the announcers all twitterpated that such a pretty girl could make such a play. The words that followed from legendary announcer Dick Enberg are great “Hubba Hubba.” That is all. Even old men can appreciate a beautiful and athletic young lady.

Check out the video below and decide for yourself if they over reacted to her great catch. Maybe it was a web gem and I’m being over judgmental?

  • Curt Schilling’s Baseball Money Gone In 38 Studios Failure

Curt Schilling, former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and head of the bankrupt 38 Studios said this morning that the failure of the company had left him “tapped out” financially, and had effectively wiped out the money he had earned during his nineteen year Major League Baseball career.

In case you’re not familiar with the situation, here’s the short version: upon his retirement from the Red Sox in 2007 Schilling, an avid gamer, founded 38 Studios (originally called Green Monster Games, after Fenway’s famed left field wall). In 2010 Schilling struck a deal with the government of Rhode Island to move the company there. Part of the deal included a $75 million loan from the state government.

Despite the success of 38 Studios’s first game, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the company informed the state on May 1st that it would not be able to make it’s first loan repayment of $1.125 million. Just before the end of May, 38 Studios employees – all 300 of them – received an email saying that the company would not be able to meet payroll, and they were being laid off. The aftermath of the fiasco has included an acrimonious blame game between the governor of Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee and Schilling, and rumblings about investigations into 38 Studios and Schilling personally.

Schilling made an appearance on WEEI radio Boston’s Dennis & Callahan show this morning. In the interview, his first since this ordeal began, Schilling acted fairly humble and contrite over the situation, no small feat for the normally outspoken former pitcher. Schilling repeatedly expressed regret at the way the employees were treated during the ordeal, saying that they were “blindsided,” and that “they didn’t deserve it.”

Schilling also continued a bit of the blame game between himself and Governor Lincoln. When asked what happened to the company business-wise to cause it to fail, he cited a failure to raise capital. Despite the unexpected success of the studio’s first game, negotiations for a $35 million distribution deal fell apart overnight following public remarks by Governor Lincoln expressing concern over keeping the company solvent. The deal’s collapse left the company strapped for cash and unable to meet its obligations.

What’s more, it turns out that 38 Studios wasn’t the only party strapped for cash. Schilling himself had made a $50 million investment in the company. With 38 Studios’s failure, that investment is now gone. Though he did not know for certain how much he had lost, Schilling told the show that “I’m tapped out. I put everything in my name in this company.” He went on to say that he’d been forced to tell his family, “the money I saved and earned playing baseball was probably all gone… Life is going to be different.”

With Rhode Island taxpayers on the hook for $75 million and most of 38 Studios’s employees still looking for work, the company’s collapse remains a huge mess that, the effects of which will likely be felt by those involved for a long time yet.

  • Pedro Borbon Dies: Twitter Reacts

Pedro Borbon dies after succumbing to cancer, according to the Associated Press. The Cincinnati Reds pitcher, who helped his team secure back-to-back World Series wins in 1975 and 1976, passed away at his home in Pharr, Texas on Monday.

    Borbon was 65.

After playing for the California Angels in 1969, Borbon made his way to Cincinnati, where he played ball for the Reds franchise for the next 10 seasons. The relief pitcher’s biggest claim to fame came in 1976, when he pitched several scoreless innings during the National League Championship Series, which the Reds won 3-0.

“He was probably most proud of the World Series championships,” his son, Pedro Borbón, Jr., said in a telephone interview with AP. “He would talk about it often. He was also proud that he never once had a sore arm. He could pitch almost every day.”

According to an urban legend, Borbon allegedly placed a “voodoo losing curse” on the Reds after being traded to the San Francisco Giants in 1979. The spell was supposed to last until the last member of the franchise’s front office management left the club. However, in 2002, he admitted that the whole thing was just a hoax.

Following his trade to the Giants, where he stayed for one season, Borbon made the leap to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he ended his MLB career. In 2010, was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.

Quite a few fans have taken to Twitter to express their sadness over the pitcher’s passing. You can sample some of their reactions to Borbon’s death by checking out the posts below.

Sad to hear about the death of Pedro Borbon, one of the all-time great relievers. As a young Big Red Machine fan, he gave me many thrills.

  • Bill Maher Buys a Slice of the New York Mets: Twitter Reacts

Bill Maher, controversial stand-up comic and host of the HBO program “Real Time With Bill Maher”, admitted during a trip to Citi Field on Sunday that he had purchased a minority share of the New York Mets months ago. However, Maher wouldn’t reveal how much he paid for the share or how much control he currently has in the franchise. In fact, when asked how much control he’d have over the ball club, the political satirist replied with a joke.

“Look, I have enough stress in my real job. I don’t need to worry about that. I’m just a fan,” Maher jokingly explained. “I think my role is to bring luck to the team, like I did this weekend. I mean, let’s be honest: They did not have a no-hitter for 50 years, I buy in and I come to town and there’s a no-hitter. Draw your own conclusions.”

After the trustee was sued in order to recover money taken from victims of the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme, Mets owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz suddenly became interested in selling limited partner shares at $20 million a piece. Maher, who grew up in New Jersey, has always been a Mets fan. What’s more, he thought purchasing minority stake in his favorite baseball team sounded like a smart investment.

According to the Associated Press, the Mets have already closed on the 12 shares they had for sale. However, since a public announcement of the purchases has not been authorized, very little information about the other investors is currently known. Maher, on the other hand, is clearly excited about his purchase. The comedian paid a visit to New York Citi Field on Sunday, which marks the first time he’s been back to the city since the deal closed.

“I’ve never been back here — it’s awesome. I’ve never been by a batting cage, really,” Maher said. “”I definitely want to come back for the All-Star game.”

How do people feel about the comedian’s investment in the New York Mets? Check out some responses to the news embedded below. The level of snark found in these comments is pretty high, so prepare yourself accordingly.

  • Todd Frazier Hero: Twitter Reacts

    Todd Frazier Hero: Twitter Reacts

Todd Frazier hero: Most Cincinnati Reds fans already knew this, but now his heroism has extended beyond the playing field. While grabbing a bite to eat with teammate Ryan Ludwick in downtown Pittsburgh, someone seated at the restaurant began choking. Although there were two women attempting to dislodge the food from the victim’s throat by utilizing the Heimlich Maneuver, it began apparent that their methods weren’t getting the job done.

Frazier, who admitted he’d never performed the life-saving maneuver on anyone before, rushed to the table and asked the ladies to let him give it a shot. Two thrusts later and the “monster piece” of steak popped out of the man’s windpipe. The guy was extremely grateful, as were the women, one of whom couldn’t stop crying. Can’t say that I blame her.

“I ran over there and said, ‘let me try it.’ I tried it twice. It popped out. It was monster piece. The guy was very thankful. The lady he was with was crying. It was surreal. I never done it before in my life,” Frazier told Cincinnati.com.

Instead of showboating about the incident and bragging to everyone about saving a man’s life, Frazier returned to his table and finished his meal. The men never exchanged names. In fact, the victim had no idea that Frazier was a professional ball player.

It hasn’t taken very long for the news to make its way to Twitter, which has nothing but praise and adoration for the Cincinnati Reds player. Have a look at some responses to the incident below.

  • Will Rhymes Hit by Pitch, Collapses on the Field

Will Rhymes, infielder for the Tampa Bay Rays and the guy with one of the coolest names in the MLB, collapsed during the Boston Red Sox game last night after taking a 95-mph pitch to the arm. Although Rhymes seemed to initially shake off the injury, he was soon became wobbly, which immediately caught the attention of first base coach George Hendrick.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Rhymes likely collapsed due to the adrenaline rush that accompanied the injury. After having the arm checked out by officials — only a bruise, folks, not a break — the Rays infielder is expected to be okay.

After the game, Rhymes spoke briefly about the incident, stating that he felt dizzy and nauseous as he made his way to first base. “You saw the rest. Apparently I didn’t get real far,” he explained. “My lights went out.”

Tampa Bay went on to beat Boston 2-1. Rhymes, of course, is taking a fair amount of ribbing from the folks who spend their entire life on Twitter. A fair and balanced mixture of comments can be found beneath the embedded video.

  • Padres Fan Catches Foul With Beer…Then Chugs It

The San Diego Padres are absolutely terrible. At 11-20 they are the second worst team in all of baseball. Two things happen when a team is really bad in baseball this early in the season. Number one is that the announcers get much more nostalgic about their playing days. Number two is that the cameras seem to start paying way more attention to the crowd than the game. You start getting way more replays of people doing the wave, and of fans catching foul balls, and especially of little kids enjoying the greatest game on earth.

We all know that drinking and playing baseball do not work well together. But drinking and watching baseball, it is the only way to go, especially these days in San Diego. Yesterday in the bottom of the 7th inning a foul ball was hit into the second row along the third base line. The ball dropped to the concrete between seats but as it caromed around, it ended up finding a home in this dude’s beer. So naturally he did what every single red blooded American who drinks would do in his place. He stopped for a quick picture and then destroyed the $9 beer. He gets high points for drinking the beer quickly with a ball in it, but he loses points for the ending. Who drops a ball that was in your beer? Epic Win or Epic Fail?

  • Josh Hamilton Hit 4 Home Runs In One Game

Josh Hamilton Hit 4 Home Runs In One Game

Last night Josh Hamilton became the 18th player in the 137 year history of Major League Baseball to hit 4 home runs in a single game. He hit two-run homers in the first, third and seventh innings and added another in the eighth. He also doubled to take his night to 5 for 5 with 8 RBI’s. In doing this he also set the American League record for number of overall bases in a game with 18. Not too shabby for a guy with a past littered with drugs and alcohol.

Hamilton has some serious demons. He battles addiction nearly every day, it’s one of the scariest parts about who he is as a person and as an athlete. Many around baseball see him as a risk, but he is one of the most talented players in the game. He does have the tendency to relapse because he is human, he admitted that he drank again over the winter. But he wants to be a better person, he wants to make his fans proud, and if they give him a chance, he will show up and give them a show. Last night is a perfect example.

Hamilton hit the home runs and basically showed up the entire franchise of the Baltimore Orioles with his exhibition of dominance. This has not been a good year for the Orioles in terms of embarrassing stories. At 19-11 they are 1 game back from having the best record in baseball, but they also lost to a community college team in spring training. Add this to the mix and i’m sure that they aren’t too proud, but if they make the playoffs for the first time since the whole Jeffery Maier, Indians futility of the 1996-1997 seasons, they will look back on all of this and laugh.

Thanks to Keith Allison for the picture.

  • Harvard Baseball Team ‘Call Me Maybe’ Cover Video Goes Viral

A bit lame? Yes. A bit funny? Yes. Which is really the mixture when trying to come up with an idea to keep yourself entertained during a car ride. I don’t think anyone has ended a long car trip, remembering all the stupid stuff you did to help whittle away the hours getting to your location.

Unless, you record the footage of what you did and upload it to YouTube for all to see. Which is exactly what the Harvard baseball team decided to do, and now the video has gone viral.

It is a bit lame, with a pinch of funny, and something we can all relate to. Also, they get an 8 out of 10 for their synchronization. And who knew Harvard had a baseball team before this?

    Enjoy.

  • Jayson Werth Breaks Wrist: Twitter Reacts

Jayson Werth, right fielder for the Washington Nationals, broke his left wrist during the Philadelphia Phillies game on Sunday night. According to doctors, the break is severe enough that Werth may not return to the field for several months. To fully understand the extent of the injury, Werth will need to visit a specialist.

During the sixth inning, Werth made a dive to catch a ball hit by Placido Polanco. In the process, the right fielder’s glove got caught beneath him, causing his wrist to bend backward. It was apparent right away that something was wrong; Werth remained on the ground momentarily before finally tossing the ball back infield. Afterwards, he promptly headed off to have someone examine his injury.

“It’s a clean break,” Washington manager Davey Johnson explained. “He’s going to be out for a while.” Werth was unavailable for comment after the game.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time the right fielder has experienced troubles from a damaged wrist. Back in 2006, Werth missed the entire season with the Dodgers when an injury to his left wrist completely derailed his ability to play.

Twitter reaction to the news has been particularly interesting, as there are some people who are pleased with the fact that he hurt his wrist yet again. What’s wrong with these people, you ask? I honestly have no idea. You can sample some of these tweets below.

  • Community College Beat Second MLB Team In Three Years

Remember the community college baseball team that beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 years ago? Well, they did it again. This time they beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 in what manager Buch Schowalter called a “controlled scrimmage.” Yeah right.

To be fair to the Orioles, they did supply both the pitchers and catchers to the tired Manatees for the charity game.

FCS assistant coach Tim Hill II tsaid in an interview that his team was grateful that “Showalter played all of his guys,” including the battery for the Manatees. “I would not claim it as a ‘W,’” he said. “For us, we’re so down on pitching right now with four conference games this week. Fortunately for us, they were very understanding. … The game is all about pitching and defense. So for them to be able to provide the pitching was nice. But at the same time, I thought our guys handled the baseball.”

SCF freshman Orlando Rivera went 2 for 3 with a stolen base, scoring the eventual winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and had this to say: “A ‘W’ is a ‘W’,” he said. “Even though we didn’t have our own pitchers, a ‘W’ is a ‘W’ … You gotta take the ‘W’.”

Good luck to the Orioles living this one down, because I know that 3 years ater it still haunts the Pirates.

Orioles lost to a college team yesterday & are losing to their AAA team today. I wonder how they’ll do against AL East. #OriolesTragic(image) 12 minutes ago via Echofon ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

  • Matt Cain Becomes Richest Right Hander In MLB History

Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants has signed a 5 year $112.5 million contract extension that will keep him in the black and orange through the 2017 season. The deal is the largest in history for a right hander destroying the previous high of $105 million signed by Kevin Brown in 1998.

The guaranteed money includes a $5 million signing bonus and a $7.5 million buyout in 2018. That year has a player vesting option for $21 million. Cain’s option would become guaranteed if he pitches 200 innings in 2017 or 400 innings combined in 2016-17 and is not on the disabled list at the end of the 2017 season for a right elbow or right shoulder injury. If it does not become guaranteed, it would be a team option.

“Ensuring that Matt remained a Giant beyond this season was a top priority for the organization. Matt is an integral part of the team whose performance on the mound will be one of the keys to our success for years to come,” Giants General Manager Brian Sabean said in a statement Monday.

“The success of our franchise depends on developing and retaining homegrown talent like Matt Cain,” Giants president Larry Baer said. “I want to commend Brian Sabean, Bobby Evans, Matt and his representatives for their hard work to keep Matt in the orange and black. This is an exciting day for Giants fans everywhere and a fantastic way to kick off the 2012 season.”

Matt Cain has a lifetime ERA of 3.35 with 1085 strikeouts and 473 walks in 1317.1 innings pitched. He has a War of 23.4 which is the second highest in the majors since 2006.

  • Jamie-Lynn Sigler Dating Washington Nationals’ Cutter Dykstra

    Would Tony Soprano approve?

Well, at least he’s a New Yorker.

Sigler, who made her mark in television with her portrayal of Meadow Soprano on the hit HBO series, is reportedly now dating Cutter Dykstra of the Washington Nationals. Despite their age difference–he’s 22, she’s 30–things seem to be going well after the pair were introduced by mutual friends.

Oddly enough, Cutter’s father Lenny–a former Met–has been in the news recently with a story that sounds like something from a Sopranos episode; he and two accomplices were charged with trying to “lease and then sell high-end cars from several auto dealerships by claiming credit through a phony business“, which earned him three years in state prison.

  • New iPad Already A Hit With MLB Scouts, Coaches

Another year is already nearly a quarter gone, and with the arrival of March comes something that sports fans everywhere have been eagerly awaiting all winter: Baseball (March what? Basket-who?). At the beginning of March the players, coaches, and staff of Major League Baseball reported to their Spring Training facilities in either Florida or Arizona to prepare for the 2012 season.

Part of that preparation includes scouting. Players and coaches spend hours upon hours reading statistics and watching video of opposing teams trying to find ways to beat them in the coming season. This batter has trouble with fastballs that are high and inside, that pitcher twitches his left eyebrow just so before throwing a curve ball. Watching video is crucial to a team’s preparation, and this year it looks like MLB teams are about to get a new tool in their scouting toolbox: Apple’s new iPad.

It seems that MLB coaches, scouts, and players are eager to get their hands on the new iPad. They hope its retina display and HD video capabilities will improve scouting by allowing them to see small details – like the aforementioned eyebrow twitch – more clearly. Rob Coughlin, manager of video scouting for the Cincinnati Reds, told USA Today that he hoped the iPad’s HD video capabilities would allow him to see things like a pitcher’s grip on the ball, as well as minute details of his mechanics.

Despite letting advances in replay technology like those used in the NFL pass by, the MLB has always relied heavily on video technology, and has generally been quick to embrace advances in that technology. Many teams, the Reds included, are installing HD video cameras around their stadium in order to collect high-quality video of players in action. The iPad provides a platform for scouts to watch that video in a highly portable format, making it easier to bring important scouting data on road trips.

The MLB has also been quicker than other professional sports leagues to embrace mobile technology as a way of bringing games to the fans. Last month they released this year’s version of MLB At Bat for iOS and Android. This year’s app is free, with the option to purchase a subscription to live audio feeds of every major league game. They also offer MLB.TV, a service that allows subscribers to watch out-of-market baseball games live on their mobile devices or on a variety of devices that connect to their TV (Xbox 360, Apple TV, Roku, etc.).

The new iPad was announced last week at a special media event put on by Apple. It hits stores tomorrow. Those who pre-ordered within the first two days should also get their iPads tomorrow, while those who ordered last Friday or later will have a longer wait.

  • Tim Lincecum On Twitter: MLB Star Gets Verified

San Francisco Giants PItcher and NL Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum (also known in some circles as that guy that looks like Mitch Kramer from Dazed and Confused) has joined Twitter, and now has a verified account, as baseball fans prepare for the 2012 season.

Interestingly enough, he used his first tweet as an opportunity to share a thought about another sport:
