  • Jenna Bush Hager Receives Special Phone Call On ‘Today Show’ Set Before Taking Maternity Leave

Jenna Bush Hager became teary on the set of The Today Show on Tuesday, right before heading off for maternity leave. She and her husband are expecting their second child on August 13. They are the parents of two-year-old daughter Mila.

Immediately following a segment Jenna Bush did on Reese Witherspoon, she was showered with baby gifts by the Today Show anchors.

That wasn’t the only big surprise for the daughter of former President George W. Bush and the granddaughter of former President George H.W. Bush, however.
A phone call from two very special people–while on the air live–brought Jenna Bush Hager to tears.

Former First Ladies Barbara and Laura Bush called in to the show and made Jenna’s send off even more special.

“We’re calling in just to give her lots of love, and tell her we can’t wait to see that new baby,” Laura Bush said over the phone.

“I can’t handle this,” a very teary Jenna Bush Hager said.

Savannah Guthrie made a comment while the two former first ladies were on the phone that surely came out wrong.

“One thing we know the Bush ladies know how to do is raise beautiful little girls,” she remarked.

Barbara Bush picked up on it right away, and interjected a comment laced with good naturedness.

“Wait a minute,” she said. “We’re not bad on boys!”

It was an exciting morning for Jenna Bush Hager. Her fans will no doubt be awaiting word from her Today Show cohorts on the birth of her second baby.

  • Barbara Bush Celebrates 89th Birthday

    Barbara Bush Celebrates 89th Birthday

Former First Lady Barbara Bush celebrated her 89th birthday yesterday surrounded by her closest family and friends.

According to the Bush’s spokesperson, Barbara held a low-key dinner at her summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine on Sunday.

Barbara served as the First Lady from 1989 to 1993, alongside her husband, former president George H.W. Bush. Barbara and George are the parents to two sons, former president George W. Bush and governor Jeb Bush.

Barbara is not the only one celebrating a birthday this week. On Thursday, George will celebrate his 90th birthday in a similar fashion as his wife. The family will have a intimate dinner in their summer home with their family, according to the spokesperson.

Five years ago, on his 85th birthday, George went skydiving and vowed that he would do it again on his 90th birthday. However, it looks like he will have to pass on the adventure. George is currently not in good health and is having to use a wheelchair to get around, so it would be hard for him to manage jumping out of a plane.

Barbara’s health seems to be ailing too. In January 2014, Barbara had to be hospitalized at the Methodist Hospital in Houston for a respiratory-related issue. It was later confirmed that Barbara was suffering from a bout of pneumonia.

“She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care,” a statement from the Bush’s spokesperson Jim McGrath said at the time.

  • Barbara Bush Celebrates 89th Birthday, Promotes Literacy

Former first lady Barbara Bush celebrated her 89th birthday today in a low-key celebration in Maine. A spokesperson for the family said Barbara held a private dinner on Sunday with her relatives in Kennebunkport, Maine, where the Bush family resides in a summer home. Barbara Bush served as the First Lady from 1989 to 1993, and is the mother of former president George W. Bush and governor Jeb Bush.

Barbara’s husband, former president George H.W. Bush, is also celebrating a birthday next week, turning 90 on Thursday. Five years ago, Bush went skydiving for his 85th birthday and promised he’d do it again on his 90th. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case, as Bush is facing health problems and currently uses a wheelchair to move around. His spokesman said Bush is planning for a celebration similar to Barbara’s – an intimate dinner with family and friends.

While spending time in Kennebunkport, Maine, Barbara has been an avid supporter of literature and local school reading programs. Having founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy while First Lady, Barbara is widely known for her love and support of reading. Earlier this week, Barbara surprised a local school that had just surpassed one million pages read during the school year.

“I’m thrilled you all read so many pages,” Barbara said to an auditorium of students, teachers, and parents. “Thank you all very much and God bless you all.”

The school not only met the one million page challenge, but surpassed it with a total of 1,094,340 pages, 84,000 more read than the previous record. Thrilled about the accomplishment, school librarian Marty McGannon added, “All of us want you to know about the magic of reading. Books will take you anywhere you can imagine.”
