  • Mitt Romney Is President Of The United States Of Facebook

While Ron Paul is winning the Republican constituency of the Twitternation, Mitt Romney has established himself as the candidate of Facebook, even ahead of President Obama.

Experian Hitwise Director of Research Heather Doughtery wrote about the Facebook traffic for the presidential candidates this election season and found some encouraging news – if Facebook has anything to say about it – for one Willard Romney and company, at least insofar securing the Republican nomination. The traffic data only leads up to January 21, which was the date of the South Carolina primary so it’s anybody’s guess as to whether I’ll be announcing that Newt “The Gravedigger” Gingrich is the new President of Facebook after Florida’s primary next week.

Regardless, this is where we are now: Romney’s killing it on Facebook. Not only is his official Facebook page getting 1.7x more visits than Ron Paul’s fan page, his closest Republican/Facebook competitor, Romney’s page is netting 2.5x more visitors than Obama’s page. I know the line graph below is a little hard to see, but that red line that’s leaps and bounds ahead of every other line you see? Red is for Romney, and everybody else basically in the gutter looking up at his Facebook star.

If you’re Mitt Romney’s campaign staff and you believe that Facebook is in any way a valid reflection of people’s Real Life behavior and interests, here’s some news to send you to sleep with a smile: people making less than $30,000 are visiting your Facebook page a lot, and people in Ohio are visiting your Facebook page a lot. Why should this make Mitts happy? Because being poor and living in Ohio are two characteristics of the ever-important swing voters who would help decide a general election should Romney obtain the nomination and face Obama.

31.8% of visitors to Romney’s Facebook page in the last four weeks were reported to earn less than $30,000. Furthermore, visitors from Ohio had the highest share of visits in the last four weeks (Utah was closely behind Ohio in shares of visits but that’s Mormon country – Romney’s bread and butter – so that’s not surprising). Whether people just wanna get close with the enemy or are genuinely interested in learning about Romney, he’s pulling in some Facebook interest.

As Dougherty concluded, this is good Facebook news for Romney because it suggests that “social efforts are gaining attention and building an audience on Facebook.” This has been a crazy primary thus far, though, and who knows what the results of the South Carolina primary have done to this race. Also, keep in mind: this is not madness, this is Facebook; where people go when they need to post creepy pictures of their ultrasounds and share the latest frog/wolf/Asian father meme to their dubious friends. And since the third (more?) act of the Newtation is apparently really happening, so we’ll see how everybody’s settled on Facebook after the Florida primary.

  • Google Election & Politics Helps Informed Voters Stay Informed

The U.S. presidential election cycle used to be like a regulated yet exhilarating amusement park ride that you could count on starting and stopping at certain times. Think of the Scrambler: dizzying in experience yet timed to end at a reliable time. Now, with the ubiquity of the 24-hour news cycle and the hordes of blogs and other commentators, the teeth have been stripped off the gears that regulate the speed of the news cycle to the point that not only can you never get off this ride but it just keeps going faster and faster. Barf bags not included.

Due to the breakneck recycle speed of the political news cycle, trying to stay informed on what’s happening in the world of politics can be nauseating. You’re probably always going to be me missing something somewhere. However aggregating your own collection of news sources doesn’t have to be so stupefying since Google has made it a little easier for voters and otherwise interested parties to attempt to stay abreast of the latest news concerning topics, candidates, and election results. Google Politics & Elections, a new wing of the Google News service, collects articles covering breaking stories related to politics in the United States. With the service, readers can isolate topics to certain candidates (right now it’s a bunch of Republican primary candidates and the current POTUS, Barack Obama) as well as issues related to categories like the economy, social issues, and healthcare. From the post on Google’s official blog:

The site enables voters, journalists and campaigns to quickly sort through election info by popularity, race or issues. People can also check out the Trends Dashboard to take the web’s real-time political pulse by comparing candidates’ YouTube video views, search traffic and Google News mentions. Campaign staffers, advocates and everyday citizens can utilize our tools and features to reach, engage and inspire voters.

What might be most interesting for anyone who makes a hobby out of political speculation there is a function on the Politics & Elections homepage where you can track trends related to each specific candidate. For instance, given the latest surge of Rick Santorum out of the bowels of obscurity and into a legitimate third place (the fact that third place is now a consummation devoutly to be wished is kind of absurd, really), readers can actually see the rise in Google News Mentions of Santorum in the past week. It’s a fun tool as an observer, but given how tumultuous this primary cycle has been for all Republican candidates I wouldn’t recommend placing any bets on the reliability of any search trends as proof of sustainable electability.

The Google Politics & Elections also employs the Hangouts tools for journalists who are personally covering the election, perhaps as an effort to promote sodality and collaboration but I anticipate it will most likely be used as an online watering hole where everybody commiserates and decompresses. You can add the Politics & Elections tool to your Google+ account, as well, if you’re interested in participating or watching any of the activity in the Hangouts. Additionally, you can follow news stories as they develop by adding this group to your Circles. The news service will also cover international politics as well as the home-grown brews but given that we are officially in the election year, expect most of the news to be dominated by the election of the next POTUS.

Since today kicks off the election of the Republican primaries with the Iowa caucus, following these services might be a good idea if any of you are hoping to stay informed as the results start to come in about which candidate will claim victory in Iowa this evening.

  • New Online Shopping Record Set In U.S.

New Online Shopping Record Set In U.S.

Blame the apps, blame the mobs, blame the fact that by now people are sick of hearing the same twelve holiday tunes in every retailer in the world: online shopping is all the rage. Never has this been more apparent than now since, last week, shoppers in the United States kept their slippers on, plopped down on their sofas and went bonkers with the online gift-buying and set a new record for weekly sales, according to comScore.

Ever since Cyber Monday kicked off the blitzkrieg of online shopping this year by becoming the most lucrative shopping day ever, the amount of money spent by shoppers has consistently trumped every corresponding week from 2010. In this year and last, sales steadily increased leading up to the big Day of Unwrapping (i.e., Christmas Day) with the penultimate week seeing a huge gush of money from consumers. I’d suspect that the week before Christmas is a huge shopping day for online retailers because those present-buying procrastinators wanna make sure the gifts arrive in time. This year, however, has seen a pronounced increase in money being spent for each interval that comScore recorded.

Increases in online retail sales have been observed to increase with each passing year recently so the fact that people spent more money this year than 2010 isn’t completely surprising. What makes this year so significant is just how crazy Americans went with their holiday shopping. It’s like everybody wasn’t quite content with merely spending some more money this year, so Americans decided that they didn’t like too many figures in their bank accounts and spent a lot more money. $6.3 billion worth of a lot more!

I guess some people think this is good news, but that more money than ever is being spent online raises an interesting question: given the tax loophole associated with online sales, how much tax revenue was lost in last week’s boom (and for the total $32 billion spent this holiday season, really). I’d like to see that analysis. I bet the different tiers of government want to see those stats, too. A loss of tax monies like that might not matter so much at a federal level, but that could have some heavy impact on struggling municipalities.

Anyways. So how’s your holiday shopping going? Anybody out there contribute to last week’s eruption of online shopping? Let us know with your comments below.

  • Twitter Is A Tough Stump For Presidential Candidates

A new study from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism has found that Twitter seems to have a lot to say – mostly negative – about Republican presidential primary candidates and President Obama.

The study compares the tone of the discussion on presidential candidates across Twitter, blogs, and mainstream news outlets. Pew’s data shows that Twitter has been overwhelmingly negative in tone towards Republican candidate Rick Perry and President Obama while only going slightly less harsh on Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich (I guess not all of those Twitter followers for Gingrich are there to offer support). Compared to blogs and mainstream news, Twitter was a lot less neutral in how tweets discussed the candidates.

    (image)

This probably isn’t a complete surprise if you’re a follower of several politically-inclined commenters, especially if you’ve followed trends like #tweetthepress, the trend that typically included ridiculing comments from people while watching the Republican presidential debates. From the study’s analysis:

One distinguishing factor about the campaign discourse on Twitter is that it is more intensely opinionated, and less neutral, than in both blogs and news. Tweets contain a smaller percentage of statements about candidates that are simply factual in nature without reflecting positively or negatively on a candidate.

In general, that means the discourse on Twitter about the candidates has also been more negative.

The political discussion on Twitter has also fluctuated with events more than it has in the blogosphere, where the authors seem to have made up their minds and where the tone about candidates shifts relatively little. On Twitter, the conversation about a candidate sometimes changed markedly from week to week, shifting from positive to negative and vice versa.

Finally the new study found that the candidate conversation on Twitter is tremendously active-indeed the number of statements about candidates on Twitter vastly outnumber those offered in blogs by a factor of more than 9 to 1.

One telling detail about the Twitterscape’s discussion on the candidates is that, were everybody’s votes to be cast exclusively through Twitter, we’d all have to get used to saying President Paul after next November:

And in that campaign discussion on Twitter, one candidate has fared better than anyone else. Congressman Ron Paul has enjoyed the most favorable tone on Twitter of all candidates examined. From May through November, fully 55% of the assertions about the Texas Republican on Twitter have been positive-the highest of any candidate-while 15% have been negative-the lowest percentage of any candidate. That is a differential for Paul of 40 points on the positive side.

Paul is also the most favorably discussed candidate in blogs. While he trails significantly in the polls, and has received less coverage than every Republican candidate except Rick Santorum from news outlets, Paul seems to have struck a chord with some cohort in social media.

Paul’s expanse of neutrality in the mainstream media may re-enforce the opinion of many of his supporters that, at least in this case, neutral simply indicates that he isn’t getting any coverage. Additionally, the study does suggest that, yes, The Newtation is definitely happening right now given Gingrich saw his first week of more positive reviews on Twitter than negative in the week of October 24th.

While President Obama has been getting a rough go of it on Twitter with his “negative evaluations on Twitter outweighed his positive ones by 3-1,” Pew points out that he hasn’t received quite as harsh of an evaluation as his Republican cohorts have been dealt. Still, as with just about everything in this election cycle, these results can hardly be seen as predictive of which candidate the Republican voters will choose to run against Obama since just about every candidate this year has enjoyed the limelight of popularity and then disappeared into a dry well of near-obscurity. What you can count on, though, is that no matter what happens people will most likely continue to vent and complain via Twitter.

    Unless it’s about Ron Paul.

  • Obama Campaign Recruits Volunteers With Two New Ads

In what campaign officials are calling a “tiny” ad buy, President Barack Obama is launching the first television ads of his reelection bid. The ads are a test to see if television is a good way to find volunteers for the campaign.

The ads, primarily on satellite TV stations at the moment, are an attempt to recruit by urging viewers to call a number on the screen or visit the website JoinObama.com.

    First ad: Building an Organization

I need you to do me a favor – it’ll only take a minute. The 2012 campaign is underway, and the outcome will depend not on what I do, but on what YOU do. Starting right now, call the number on your screen or visit JoinObama.com to help build our campaign in your community. It’s up to you to fight for the values we all share. Don’t sit this one out. I’d love to see you out there.

Second Ad: A Movement Starts With You

It starts with one person making a decision — that things need to change, and they’re going to help change them. That person finds another person who shares their values. They go out and find a few more. And before long, neighborhoods come together. Communities organize. A movement builds. It all starts with you, making a decision to get involved — because we’ve got SO much more to do. Call the number on your screen or visit JoinObama.com to let me know you’re in.

What did you think of the ads? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Can the Republicans Match the Democrats’ Social Media Prowess in 2012?

The 2012 Presidential election is fast approaching. It’ll be interesting to see how much more of a role social media will play in the election, compared to that of 2008.

While at the Blogworld Expo in L.A. WebProNews caught up with Hugh Hewitt, of the Hugh Hewitt Show, and he shared his thoughts on social media, pertaining to elections, and the forthcoming Republican candidate nomination:

“We’re coming into the home stretch here with the Republican nominating process, even though we haven’t cast one vote. That means we tend to make our minds up much earlier than we used to and the Republican electorate is settling down to what I believe will be a Mitt Romney nomination. But, there is still an outside chance that Rick Perry can catch him. He’s got a lot of money and a lot of experience.

It’s a Romney / Perry race. If I had to bet the house, and I don’t thank goodness, it would be on Romney”

It’s no secret that social media played a huge role in the 2008 Presidential race, but what role will it play in next years? Hewitt states that, President Obama had an enormous advantage in 2008 and he ran rings around John McCain. John McCain was not an early adapter of anything… except courage. That’s not enough in a social media world. He goes on to say:

“If you look at team Romney they have assembled the best and brightest minds of the center / right of social media. A lot of people who are very experienced in driving a message below the old media horizon.

It’s very active, and it’s very netted up and you will find at least a match when it comes to ability and performance and probably a lot more sophistication. It helps to be in the opposition. The reason that team Obama was so good is they were all in the wilderness they did not except campaign. Republicans were governing. Now they have that problem and something to defend. That new media energy is on the right, and that will alway shift. The administration party will be behind the curve.”

The 2012 Presidential race will be interesting to watch and see how it plays out, and what new roles social media plays.

  • Obama Joins Tumblr, Knows There Will Be Trolls

President Barack Obama, or more accurately the campaign of President Barack Obama, has jumped into another form of social media by joining popular blogging platform Tumblr on Monday afternoon.

In the first post, the Obama 2012 team explains that they want the Tumblr to become a collaborative effort, one where people from all over the country can submit their experiences working for the campaign or upload relevant photos like one they captured of someone wearing an Obama shirt.

They also said that the Obama 2012 Tumblr would consider reblogging other Tumblr posts.

The Obama campaign foresees some issues that could arise from their latest venture, but have addressed the “trolls” in this fashion:

There will be trolls among you: this we know. We ask only that you remember that we’re people—fairly nice ones—and that your mother would want you to be polite.

Thanks, Tumblr. We’re looking forward to getting to know you.

Introducing #Obama2012‘s Tumblr: http://t.co/N6PpCak8(image) 17 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

The importance of social media in the upcoming presidential campaign is not lost on Obama and his team, as they continue to work hard to keep Twitter and Facebook an integral part of communication with the internet community. With Tumblr, Obama looks to expand his social media presence into a space that is yet to be tapped by many others in the race.

I’m sure that he’d like to see the kind of support on Tumblr that he has on other social sites – for instance his 10.7 million Twitter followers and 23.7 million Facebook supporters.

Since creating the Tumblr blog, the Obama campaign has posted a photo of campaign staff packing up cellphones in Ohio and made a short post about the President’s jobs plan.

  • Is Sony Pictures Trying To Help Re-Elect Obama With Bin Laden / Seal Team 6 Movie?

One of the hottest projects in Hollywood is the upcoming untitled Bin Laden / Seal Team 6 movie. The film tells the story of the raid that successfully killed the 9/11 mastermind, Osama Bin Laden. Deadline is reporting that the film will open on October 12, 2012, which is the same release strategy used on The Social Network, which also premiered in early October.

As you would expect, some are questioning the timing of the films release, as it hits theaters less than a month before the presidential election. A message board poster at IMDB even compared the movie with Hitler-esque propaganda.

Do you think the Bin Laden / Seal Team 6 movie should be released before the election? Tell us what you think.

It does appear that Sony Pictures, the company distributing the film, is trying help Obama’s re-election bid, as they hosted a fundraiser for the President back in April. At the time of this writing, Sony is the only major studio to hold a political fundraiser this campaign season, according to The Weekly Standard.

Douglas Urbanski, a Hollywood producer and conservative radio talk show, calls the release date “very, very deliberate.” It should be noted that Urbanski was a producer for The Contender, a 2000 political film that sympathizes with a sex scandal-plagued Democrat and demonizes a conservative Republican member of Congress. That film was released October 13, 2000, only a mere month of way from the presidential election. Urbanski tells TWS, “It was without a doubt a deliberate attempt to influence the election“.

So it appears that Hollywood trying to sway voters just before an election is nothing new, so why is the Bin Laden / Seal Team 6 movie such a big deal?

Maureen Dowd, an op-ed columnist for The New York Times – Sunday Review, shares her thoughts on the films release date:

The White House is also counting on the Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal big-screen version of the killing of Bin Laden to counter Obama’s growing reputation as ineffectual. The Sony film by the Oscar-winning pair who made “The Hurt Locker” will no doubt reflect the president’s cool, gutsy decision against shaky odds. Just as Obamaland was hoping, the movie is scheduled to open on Oct. 12, 2012 — perfectly timed to give a home-stretch boost to a campaign that has grown tougher.

The moviemakers are getting top-level access to the most classified mission in history from an administration that has tried to throw more people in jail for leaking classified information than the Bush administration.

It was clear that the White House had outsourced the job of manning up the president’s image to Hollywood when Boal got welcomed to the upper echelons of the White House and the Pentagon and showed up recently — to the surprise of some military officers — at a C.I.A. ceremony celebrating the hero Seals.

Earlier today, Representative Peter T. King, who is also chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, called for an investigation into the White House’s cooperation with Hollywood filmmakers over the film. Essentially he wants to know what the Obama administration divulged about the raid, while helping the screenwriter do his research.

White House spokesman Jay Carney was quick to respond to King’s investigation requests, calling them “ridiculous“, he went on to say, “I would hope that as we face the continued threat from terrorism, the House Committee on Homeland Security would have more important topics to discuss than a movie.”

Director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal of the project released the following statement, disputing King’s comments as well:

Our upcoming film project about the decade long pursuit of Bin Laden has been in the works for many years and integrates the collective efforts of three administrations, including those of Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama, as well as the cooperative strategies and implementation by the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency. Indeed, the dangerous work of finding the world’s most wanted man was carried out by individuals in the military and intelligence communities who put their lives at risk for the greater good without regard for political affiliation. This was an American triumph, both heroic and non-partisan, and there is no basis to suggest that our film will represent this enormous victory otherwise.

News of the films release has people tweeting, as always.

As Bigelow said in her statement, this project is nothing new, it’s been in development for quite some time. But, I think we’re all in agreement that Sony is trying to give Obama a little surge right before the election.

Currently IMDB has the movie listed as “Untitled International Thriller”, and features no other information on the project.

  • Debt Ceiling Debate Nears Deadline, Obama Gets Busy On Twitter

Debt Ceiling Debate Nears Deadline, Obama Gets Busy On Twitter

As the deadline to raise the debt ceiling fast approaches, the White House is using Twitter to rally support for what the call the “balanced approach.” In the simplest terms, this means an approach to tackle the national debt that both cuts spending and raises revenues through tax increases and/or elimination of tax breaks.

House Republicans and the President (with congressional Democrats) have been in negotiations for weeks, but a comprehensive plan has yet to emerge that analysts feel could pass the legislature and be signed by the President.

While the White House’s Twitter account is livening up the mood by Rickrolling its followers during an open Twitter forum, President Barack Obama’s Twitter account is busy rallying support for his vision.

In a continuation of Obama’s message from Monday night’s primetime speech on the debt situation (that resulted in the shutting down of dozens of congressional websites), his Twitter account is in the middle of a giant feed-swarming campaign to ask Twitter users to tweet their congressman.

Ever since it was announced that tweets coming directly from the mouth of the President would all be signed “BO,” they have been elusive. But we got one a couple of hours ago –

The time for putting party first is over. If you want to see a bipartisan #compromise, let Congress know. Call. Email. Tweet. —BO 2 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

After that, his team has been busy tweeting out messages to his near-10 million followers about how they can contact their congresspeople via Twitter to express their support for his plan.

As of right now, the Barack Obama account has listed the Twitter handles of Republican members of Congress in Alabama, Arkansas, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado…are you sensing a pattern? As of the writing of this article, they are on Kentucky in the alphabetical listing of the states. Here’s what they are saying –

If you live in Arizona, ask @SenJonKyl and @SenJohnMcCain to support a bipartisan compromise to the debt crisis. 1 hour ago via web · powered by @socialditto

    California Republican reps on Twitter: @RepJohnCampbell (CA-48),@DarrellIssa (CA-49), @BilbrayCA50 (CA-50), @repjeffdenham (CA-19) 1 hour ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Voters in Idaho: Tweet your Republican representative and ask them to support a bipartisan solution to the deficit crisis. #compromise 51 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Kentucky voters: Tweet @SenRandPaul and ask him to compromise on a balanced deficit solution. 7 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Put this in the “aggressive social media politicking” folder, as the White House is in the middle of an impressive Twitter campaign.

Is this type of Twitter interaction a good thing for either party? Should all politicians be using Twitter to this degree to spur debate? Let us know in the comments.

  • Obama’s Twitter Town Hall Kicks Off Tomorrow

Last week, The White House announced that President Obama would be participating in his first “Twitter Town Hall” meeting, allowing the world to ask questions directly to the Commander-In-Chief.

That event kicks off at 2 p.m. EDT tomorrow, so you still have time to submit your questions for possible discussion. Interested participants are being asked to use the hashtag #AskObama when they tweet their questions. The focus, according to The White House and Twitter, will be on the economy and more specifically, jobs.

There is an official blog post up about the Town Hall on the Twitter blog. On that post we learn that specific economy-themed questions will be both selected in advance from the thousands of tweets already sent as well as selected live, during the Town Hall.

Early Monday morning the followers of Fox News’ political Twitter Account, @foxnewspolitics, were hit with a series of jarring tweets that reported the assassination of President Barack Obama. That particular Twitter account has over 38,000 followers.

At around midnight some people noticed that the account’s logo had been changed to an SK logo and the bio information had been changed to read “H4CK3D BY TH3 5CR1PT K1DD3S.” That stayed that way for just a short time before tweets began rolling out saying that Obama was dead.

The first tweet coming from the @foxnewspolitics account stated that @BarackObama had “just passed.” Later tweets went on the detail the purported incident, saying that he was shot twice at a restaurant in Iowa. The tweets then used the hashtags #america and #obamadead. Here’s a screencap of all the tweets that went out on the 4th.

The tweets weren’t removed until about 10 hours after they were first posted. Fox News released a statement saying that their @foxnewspolitics accounts had been hacked.

Jeff Misenti, vice president and general manager of Fox News Digital, said FoxNews.com was working with Twitter to address the situation as quickly as possible.

“We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts,” Misenti said.

FoxNews.com regrets any distress the false tweets may have created.

The group behind the hack call themselves The Script Kiddies. Members of the group talked to ThinkSB and told them that they have an affiliation with Anonymous.

“I would consider us to be close in relation [to Anonymous], 2 of the members of our group were members of Anonymous,” said a representative of The Script Kiddies to ThinkSB. “I was a member of Anonymous. We hope to be working with them soon.”

Why did they chose to hack a Fox News Twitter account?

“We are looking to find information about corporations to assist with antisec. Fox News was selected because we figured their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting,” the anonymous member said.

The group’s Twitter account, @ScriptKiddi3s, has been suspended by Twitter.

Twitter has said that the e-mail account associated with the specific @foxnewspolitics account had been compromised, not their servers. The White House hasn’t commented but the Secret Service has said that they are investigating the matter.

  • Rod Blagojevich Guilty, Twitter Reacts

    Rod Blagojevich Guilty, Twitter Reacts

It looks like a jury was able to agree, this time, on whether or not Rod Blagojevich attempted to sell Barack Obama’s vacated Illinois Senate seat. The verdict, just rolling in, is guilty.

This is the second crack that prosecutors have had to take down the former Governor. In the original trial, the jury was unable to reach a verdict and came back hung after two weeks of deliberation. In that case, Blagojevich was hit with 24 counts which ranged from wire fraud to extortion to bribe solicitation. The jury was only able to agree on one count – lying to the FBI.

So prosecutors decided to go at him again, this time simplifying the charges. They did this by dropping some racketeering charges and leaving Blagojevich’s one time co-defendant, his brother, out of the whole thing.

They also took only 3 weeks to present their case. The first trial took over a month and a half. According to the AP, they just streamlined the whole thing – called fewer witnesses and played shorter clips from the damning audio evidence from the FBI wiretaps. Basically, anything to make the decision for the jury less complicated.

And at the retrial, Blag himself testified in his own defense. “When I hear myself saying that on tape, I’m an effin’ jerk, and I apologize,” he said on the stand.

This time, Blago has been convicted of 17 of the 20 counts. The jury was unable to come to a verdict on 2 counts. He faces up to 350 years in prison.

Blagojevich had turned himself into a somewhat unwanted celebrity after his removal from office. He made the talk show rounds immediately following his indictment, hitting The Late Show with David Letterman, The Daily Show and others. He tried to appear on the short-lived NBC reality show I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, but the judge in his case wouldn’t let him leave the country to film it. His wife took his place on the show.

He also appeared on the 9th season of Celebrity Apprentice. He didn’t last very long, as Trump fired him during the 4th aired episode.

Blagojevich hasn’t always been an avid Twitter user, but he joined the network about a month or so ago. He then publicly announced that he would be live-tweeting his retrial. The judge in his trial quickly nipped that idea, as he banned Blago from using the social media client inside the courtroom.

The Twitterverse is reacting to the breaking news, most of which are not too sympathetic to the ex-Governor –

  • News FAIL: Obama Mixed Up With Osama

News FAIL: Obama Mixed Up With Osama

Late night reporting has to be exhausting, and with all the scrambling around to come up with the breaking Bin Laden news on Sunday, people were bound to make mistakes.

Whether malicious or innocent, people unfortunately mixed up Obama and Osama during the coverage of the latter’s death in a Pakistani compound. I, for one, can see how you could mix up the names. They are only one letter off after all.

News Manager at YouTube Olivia Ma just tweeted the link to a video that the Washington Post has provided. It serves a round-up of the name-mix-up FAILS of the night. Funny, awkward and painful…it’s exactly what an end of the day YouTube video should be.

  • Osama Bin Laden Death News Sets Tweets Per Second Record

Osama Bin Laden Death News Sets Tweets Per Second Record

If you were on Twitter last night, you don’t need anyone to tell you that there was a lot of talk about Osama Bin Laden. In fact, in my personal experience, I only found about 5 or so tweets on my feed within a 2 hour span that weren’t about the breaking news of his death.

And I firmly believe that any of my friends that were tweeting about other things were doing so simply to be some sort of trend-bucking contrarian. Sorry, I don’t care about your cat. I know he is curled up inside the dryer. Sorry, I have real news to read about.

But it seems as those people not tweeting about Osama Bin Laden were in the vast minority, as Twitter announced today that last night a new record was set for sustained Tweets per second. I’ll let them tell you:

Last night saw the highest sustained rate of Tweets ever. From 10:45 – 2:20am ET, there was an average of 3,000 Tweets per second [1/3] 2 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

An even more precise update: Twitter averaged 3440 TPS from 10:45 to 12:30pm ET last night 1 hour ago via web · powered by @socialditto

That is a whole lotta activity. The highest peak was an staggering 5,106 TPS at 11pm, just before President Obama made his speech. As many as this is, it still doesn’t come close to the all time spike in TPS – 6,939 just minutes after the new year in Japan. It does beat the TPS spike during Super Bowl XLV, which set a sporting event record at 4,064.

At 11p.m. ET, there were 5,106 Tweets per second. At 11:45p.m. ET, when Pres. Obama finished his remarks, there were 5,008 TPS [2/3] 2 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Below is the graph of the Tweets Per Second between 9:30 pm and 12:30 am. Many people have said in the aftermath of last night’s news that Twitter was their go-to for information. Many didn’t even follow traditional TV coverage except to watch Obama’s speech. Twitter already has popularity, but last night it may have just gained total legitimacy.

Osama bin Laden Has Been Killed

Osama bin Laden, one of the most notorious terrorists of all time, has been killed.

What did you think when you heard the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed? Let us know.

Just a few short hours ago, President Obama announced the death of the September 11th mastermind, which was live-streamed by the White House and Facebook. (Watch it above if you missed it)

The news of bin Laden’s death hit Twitter first, but nothing was official. At 7:25pm PST CNN’s Steve Brusk tweeted about the President’s “security related announcement” and people began buzzing as the rumor mill began to accelerate in to hyper-drive.

As to be expected, large amounts of people amassed outside the White House and Ground Zero to celebrate the death of bin Laden. Below is a video from New York City where chants of “USA USA” can be heard.

  • Obama’s Birth Certificate: New Conspiracy Theories

It has been a rough week for the Birthers.  After 2 and 1/2 years of demands that President Barack Obama release his long-form birth certificate to prove that he is, in fact, an American citizen qualified to serve as Commander-in-Chief – he did just that.  He released it.

Presented with the document for which they had been asking, they have now begun to do what any good conspiracy theorists would do – reject its legitimacy.  Because as we are all aware, America loves a conspiracy.  And conspiracies never really die, they evolve.

Here is a culling of many of the new problems that the Birthers have with the long-form birth certificate.  For all specifics, please refer to the (completely unaltered) copy of the document below.

    • Let’s start at the top.  What the hell is a “certificate of live birth?”  That’s what the old short-form one said.  Can this man not just provide a “birth certificate?”  Not the same thing.  Seriously.
    • If you look at the left side, it is obviously copied from a bound book.  The background outside the book parameters matches up too seamlessly with the book page pattern.  Shopped.
    • It’s missing everything that a birth certificate should have – the birth weight, a cute little baby-footprint and an official seal.  What gives?
    • Obama was “born” on August 4th, 1961.  The date the certificate was accepted is August 8th, 1961.  What’s the hold-up, guys? Hiding something?
    • There are two small, very faint Xs above the twin and triplet boxes at the top.  Does Obama have identical siblings.  Are they all Obama? Are all 3 of them running the country?  Is it like Multiplicity?
    • In the “Father’s Race” box, it says “African.”  If this was really written in 1961, the race would say “Colored” or “Negro.”  And while we are on the subject of races, the type for the mother’s race “Caucasian” is way too perfect.  No typewriter in 1961 could type so perfectly.
    • Under hour of birth, the “M” in “P.M” is a different font.  Might as well be in Comic Sans.
    • The box next to the name of the attendant is all smudged and stuff.
    • There has to be something to the barely visible vertical numbers on the right side of the certificate.  Looks like something 991.
    • The doc who signed the certificate died 8 years ago.  Oh, how convenient.  Looks like we’ll never get him to talk.

Ok, that was fun.  But the conspiracy sub-conspiracy that is beginning to gain to most traction on the interwebs is the so called “layers” conspiracy.  Apparently, if you open up the birth certificate in Photoshop or something similar, you can see and are able to manipulate multiple layers.  This obviously means that someone shopped the certificate and screwed up the part of forgery where you make it not look like a forgery.  Videos have hit YouTube as demonstration of the “layers” conspiracy.  Check it out:

As Gawker points out, it truly is best left to a YouTube commenter to explain this phenomenon:

It’s called OCR (optical character recognition). Acrobat and many scanners do this by default. It detects letters and words on the page and allows you to add selectable text to the document without having to type it in manually.

Notice how when you hide a layer, it’s white behind it? If it was truly forged, you wouldn’t see any of the background missing. It’s white because it doesn’t know what’s behind the text BECAUSE THE TEXT WAS THERE WHEN IT WAS SCANNED.

Beliefs on Barack Obama’s political stances and policies aside, you have to be amazed by the persistence of this group.  Their ability to keep finding points of contention even when presented with the very evidence they demanded is staggering.  Who said Americans never work hard at anything?

Thanks to Buzzfeed, Gawker and Smoking Gun.

  • Obama’s Birth Certificate Release: Twitter Responds

Today, President Obama released his official Long Form Birth Certificate on WhiteHouse.gov.  Whether this move will have any impact on the Birther movement is yet to be determined.

Since the internet has been the main platform for keeping this thing going, it is only fitting that it should react strongly to this development.

Twitter has blown up over Obama’s Birth Certificate, celebrities, politicians and the common-folk alike.  Here is my roundup of the Long Form Birth Certificate Announcement Day (LFBCAD for future reference) in the Twitterverse.

The White House tweeted about the release, emphasizing that the issue is a distraction from real issues:

The Republican response was vaired, Presidential candidate Mitt Romney emphasized that this new release is a waste of time. Former VP candidate Sarah Palin and well know conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart commended Donald Trump for his media blitz regarding the issue in the last couple of weeks.

  • Obama Birth Certificate Released Via WhiteHouse.gov

The Obama Administration has released the President’s “long form birth certificate” – available for viewing at WhiteHouse.gov. This comes after years of controversy surrounding the topic of his U.S. citizenship, and whether or not he was indeed born in the U.S. as the certificate does indicate.

Of course the White House has taken to Facebook and Twitter to spread the message directly.

The White HouseSince President Obama believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn’t good for the country, he requested the long form version, which has been published at http://wh.gov/Cl6.

The White House has made the document shareable through a SlideShare embed:

Honolulu is named as the place of birth. It has a stamp on it from April 25, 2011 by the state registrar, which says, “I certify this is a true copy or abstract of the record on file in the Hawaii State Department of Health.”

“At a time of great consequence for this country – when we should be debating how we win the future, reduce our deficit, deal with high gas prices, and bring stability to the Middle East, Washington, DC, was once again distracted by a fake issue,” White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said. “The President’s hope is that with this step, we can move on to debating the bigger issues that matter to the American people and the future of the country.”

On Twitter, the White House account tweeted, “”We’ve got big problems to solve…we can solve them, but we’re going to have to focus on them – not on this.”

The Internet has been instrumental in keeping this controversy alive. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

  • President Obama Laments White House Technology

It has been reported that the city of Washington D.C. is Blackberry addicted.  Well, at least the government.  When the status of a government shutdown was looming last week, congressional staffers were freaking out at the proposition of having to give up their devices.

President Obama is no exception, reportedly refusing to give up his Blackberry when he first took office, despite security concerns from his staff.  Apparently, the technology surrounding him ain’t so great.

Obama recently kicked off his re-election bid, and today he was in his home base of Chicago speaking to donors.  In some off-the-cuff remarks the President spoke about the technology situation at the White House and other parts of the government.  As the President of the United States of America, it looks like he expected the latest and greatest.  CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller Tweeted about the President’s remarks at the fundraiser.

Mitt Romney’s 2012 Presidential Campaign Launches Via Social Media

Mitt Romney has announced the formation of an exploratory committee for a 2012 presidential bid via YouTube, and Twitter.

In the 2:30 video, the former governor of Massachesetts, talks about unemployment, foreclosures, and even gives Obama a ribbing over his policies. Romney also states, “He and the people around him have never worked in the real economy. They just don’t know how jobs are created in the private sector.

Romney’s video went live on Monday, just a week after we saw President Obama launch his 2012 reelection bid.

Even in its infancy, you can tell that the 2012 presidential race will be much more social media centric. During the 2008 campaign we saw Barack Obama essentially pioneer using Facebook and Twitter to reach the masses, while his competitor, John McCain, ran a more traditional campaign.

Do you think we’ve seen the last of the traditional political campaign? Leave your thoughts.
