  • Axl Rose Cancels “Jimmy Kimmel” Appearance; Bad News For Coachella?

Axl Rose has dominated music headlines in recent weeks after fans got a whiff of a reunion, and when news broke that Guns N’ Roses will be headlining the Coachella Music and Arts Festival this year, a renewed interest in all things G N’ R took over the Web. Now, however, fans are worried that something is up after Rose canceled his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live and no explanation was given.

The appearance was reportedly supposed to be full of announcements regarding the festival and an upcoming tour which would reunite Axl with longtime G N’ R guitarist Slash, but Rose backed out on Monday.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, unfortunately Axl is no longer scheduled to be on Kimmel tomorrow,” a source on the show said.

Even Jimmy Kimmel wasn’t in on the reasons behind the cancelation, and broke the news to his audience that Axl wouldn’t be showing up on Tuesday.

“Axl Rose was supposed to be here tomorrow, but he will not be here tomorrow…for reasons known only to Axl Rose. Or maybe he will be here…maybe he’s just trying to keep us guessing,” Kimmel said.

There has been talk of a G N’ R tour for some time now, with rumors flying that Rose and Slash were feuding and wouldn’t be reuniting. According to the band’s former manager, Doug Goldstein, Slash left the band in 1996 but the tension began in ’91, when the guitarist was offered the chance to work with Michael Jackson. Rose, who was allegedly sexually abused as a child, was opposed to the idea due to the many charges leveled at Jackson at the time.

“I told him not to do it because Axl was molested by his father when he was two and he believed the charges against Michael Jackson…he was devastated. He thought that Slash would support it and would be against all the abuse. From the point of view of Axl, that was the only problem. He could ignore the drugs and alcohol…but could never ignore child abuse,” Goldstein said.

As of now it’s still unclear what Axl Rose’s no-show might mean for the announcements and Coachella, but fans are anxiously awaiting an answer.

  • Axl Rose Guitarist Says Two New Guns N’ Roses Albums Almost Ready

Guitarist DJ Ashba has his fingers in some big pies. He tours with Nikki Sixx and his Sixx:A.M. band. But he is also in Axl Rose’s lovechild, Guns N’ Roses. For a while now, Sixx:A.M. has been his focus. But he says that could change very quickly.

According to Ashba, we could get hit with a new Guns N’ Roses album very soon. Or maybe even more than one.

“Axl, of course, has, I believe, two complete albums worth of songs already recorded and probably a s**tload of other stuff I’ve never heard,” he said in an interview with Guitar International.

Axl Rose has taken his time releasing anything since parting with the classic G N’ R lineup back in 1994. He took until 2008 to finally release Chinese Democracy. It’s been six years since then.

“Lack of songs is not our problem,” Ashba explained. “It’s just getting into the studio.

“A machine like Sixx:A.M. [with three members] isn’t nearly as hard to move as a machine like Guns N’ Roses with eight guys. It just takes a little more to turn the wheel.”

Ashba says the new material from Rose sounds like classic Guns N’ Roses. Oddly enough, that’s exactly what has been said about Slash’s latest album with vocalist Myles Kennedy aptly holding down the chair that Axl himself used to fill.

Maybe there will be some comparison about which lineup sounds like the real Guns N’ Roses. Either way, Ashba is stoked to get into the studio and get his guitar onto the new material.

“He’s played me quite a bit of stuff that’s phenomenal, and, hopefully, I can get my hands on it and put my little stamp on it, before all is said and done… [T]here’s been more and more talk about getting in there before the end of the year, which I’m really excited about.”

  • Axl Rose and Slash: So He’s Saying There’s a Chance?

For a long time, the notion of getting Axl Rose and Slash back together on an album and/or onstage again fell in the same category as getting Roger Waters back onstage with Pink Floyd or David Lee Roth back with Van Halen.

If those comparisons fill you with hope, you are not alone. Roger Waters did finally play onstage with Floyd at the Live 8 event back in 2005. And Roth reunited with the Van Halen brothers for an album and tour that reached back to the band’s early days and was well-received by fans and critics alike. Officially, they’re still together.

Maybe, just maybe, there is hope for a full-blown G n’ R reunion?

Well, Slash weighed in on that in a recent Guitar World interview. Since original G n’ R bassist Duff McKagan has been playing the occasional gig with Axl and his current G n’ R lineup as fill-in for bassist Tommy Stinson, the question needed to be asked: Might Slash bury the hatchet and play with Axl again?

“People have been speculating about it for years,” Slash replied. “But I really have a hard time picturing it. There hasn’t been any communication along those lines between he and I. I have a hard time picturing it because I’m always focused on the next show. I’m one of those people who lives in the moment. I don’t look too far into the future and I don’t dwell too much on the past.”

Slash says he lists the early days of Guns n’ Roses as among the highlights of his career, but he’s moved on.

Axl’s former personal manager from the Use Your Illusion days has come out as saying that Duff’s recent involvement with Axl will help make a full reunion happen.

“Duff is paving the way to open the gates again,” Craig Duswalt says. “Axl and Duff are really getting along well at the concerts, so there’s an opening.”

  • Axl Rose, Slash Haven’t Talked About A Reunion

Axl Rose and former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash have been the subject of several rumors this year as fans began to hope for a reunion, but Slash says that’s not going to happen.

Rose and original bassist Duff McKagan have been on tour with the band this year, and McKagan’s willingness to work with Rose again prompted fans to speculate on Slash’s return. But, he says, there’s been no talk between the musicians about it at all.

“People have been speculating about it for years, but I really have a hard time picturing it. There hasn’t been any communication along those lines between he (Rose) and I. I have a hard time picturing it, because I’m always focused on the next show. I’m one of those people who lives in the moment. I don’t look too far into the future and I don’t dwell too much on the past,” Slash told Guitarworld.com.

Slash is currently hard at work with his band The Conspirators, whose second album World On Fire will be released on September 16. He says that while so many things have changed over the years, a lot of things are still the same.

“Obviously I’m in a different band now, but the road trips and venues are pretty much the same. It was a blast then and it’s a blast now. I do know I’m not as fucked up as I was! We were at the height of our debauchery back then,” he said.

As for comparisons of World On Fire to Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite For Destruction, Slash says there was no intentional similarity, and points to producer Mike Baskette’s skills in the studio for giving it a raw sound.

“The sonic landscape has completely changed in the recording world. Mike really cut his teeth working as an engineer in the studio trying to record rock and roll the way that it should be. I think it was a relief for him be able to work with a band that was actually going to play through the songs and then be able to use his own chops to achieve what the band sounds like. It was a really good pairing.”

  • Axl Rose Can Outsing Mariah Carey?

Okay, who has the greatest vocal range of all time? Of course, it’s Mariah Carey who is famous for her amazing five octave vocal range. But hold on there Guinness World Records, according to a study posted on concerthotels.com, Guns N’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose has the most range of any singer ever.

Please note that the study concerns vocal range, not necessarily who has the best voice.

So what’s with the study, and how did they come up with Axl? “To create this piece, we took the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time as compiled by Rolling Stone magazine in 2008. To this list, we added some of today’s top singers including the nominees for top male and female artist at the Billboard Music Awards 2014. We cross-referenced the resulting list with vocal range data curated by The Range Place. We included all of the singers on the list for whom the data was readily available.”

Basically, the study took about 50 singers from different genres and time periods and found which song featured their lowest note and which song featured their highest note.

The research ultimately established that Axl has the biggest vocal range. According to the study, Axl hit the F1 in the song There Was a Time as his lowest note. Then, in the tune Ain’t It Fun, the frontman goes all the way up to a B6.

The study isn’t really scientific, however. Death and Taxes Magazine points out that there is no cited source for the study’s information, and they question some of the analysis, “It is a bit odd that the chart claims his low notes were below those of the King of Lows, Barry White, and it would be quite nice if the lovely colors came with some evidence to back such claims. On the high side of the scale Rose can apparently out-pitch the likes of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, and those three claims are suspect at best.”

Here’s a list of the top ten ranges, and the notes that the study claims that the singers hit:

    Axl Rose: F1 – B♭6
Mariah Carey: F2 – G7 (Her G7 is by far the highest note sung by anyone on the list)
    Prince: E2 – B6
    Steven Tyler: D2 – E6
    James Brown: E♭2 – E6
    Marvin Gaye: D2 – E♭6
    Christina Aguilera:C3 – C#7
    David Bowie: G1 – G#5
    Paul McCartney: B1 – B5
    Thom Yorke: E2 – E6
    Freddie Mercury: F2 – E6

What do you think of the list? Is Axl Rose the best rock singer ever?

  • Axl Rose Isn’t Retiring, Despite Reports

Axl Rose Isn’t Retiring, Despite Reports

Axl Rose isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, according to the band, despite recent reports that he’ll be retiring after Guns N’ Roses completes their residency in Las Vegas later this year.

“Band members have been told their calendars are free following Vegas,” a source told RadarOnline. “Axl (Rose) is considering retiring and it’s done. Band members and support staff were surprised when told the news and are actively looking for work.”

Another “source” claimed that 52-year old Rose is tired of being on the road, saying, “Axl has made enough money and wants to stop touring. He is considering retiring.”

The guys took to Twitter to set the record straight, calling the report BS.

The band will likely take a lengthy break after their residency ends in June so the members can work on various solo projects, but the band itself isn’t going anywhere.

Earlier this week, the web lost its collective mind when a study was released showing that Axl Rose has the greatest vocal range of any singer; Concert Hotels, which released the study, says the list was compiled from a Rolling Stone article from 2008.

Many thought the list was claiming that Rose is the greatest singer of all time, but it appears to be stating that he has one of the greatest vocal ranges, and his name happens to be at the top of the list.

  • Axl Rose Not World’s Greatest Singer

Axl Rose Not World’s Greatest Singer

A recent Concert Hotels infographic concerning the vocal ranges of popular singers confused some into reading that Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose has been deemed the greatest vocalist of all time. What the chart, entitled “The Vocal Ranges of the World’s Greatest Singers,” conveyed was that Axl does indeed have a large vocal range, but does not declare him as the finest singer.

The singers on the chart can be sorted by vocal range, highest notes and lowest notes, and Rose is followed by Mariah Carey and Prince in the range department. Mariah Carey, Christina Aquilera and Prince beat out Rose in the highest notes field, though Rose can hit the lowest notes, ahead of Barry White and David Bowie.

Several news outlets, including USA Today, initially misread the chart, and assumed Axl Rose had been deemed God of all pop singers.

Axl Rose is a high genius, and once customized his own pair of Converse hi-top sneakers:

Concert Hotels sourced a Rolling Stone list of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” while compiling their chart, which includes Kurt Cobain, Eminem (?), Roy Orbison and Miley Cyrus

While Rose has indeed been deemed one of the greatest singers, outraged readers took to Twitter to vent their dismay over the assumption that Axl is the all-around king:

  • Axl Rose Disses the Red Hot Chili Peppers

Axl Rose Disses the Red Hot Chili Peppers

By now most people have probably heard that the Red Hot Chili Peppers didn’t really play their instruments during their performance at this year’s Super Bowl. The group’s bass player Flea made the admission on the band’s website a few days ago.

So it was only a matter of time before people in the music world chimed in, to either show support for the Chili Peppers or to speak negatively about them and talk a little trash.

Apparently, former Guns N’ Roses front man Axl Rose has taken the opportunity to talk trash and he did it in an op-ed piece and through his Twitter account.

In the op-ed piece Rose criticized the band a little, and used a bit of sarcasm to do it. “Consider that maybe sometime before their actual performance that rather than use a guitar cord or standard wireless, that in the name of science and for all mankind, Flea courageously had a newly invented breakthrough in microchip technology installed in his ass that picked up the frequencies of his bass and transmitted them to his amplifier,” wrote Rose.

The “November Rain” singer also called the Red Hot Chili Peppers a karaoke band. “If the band wasn’t really playing or wireless or whatever and Anthony was really singing, they may have set a new world record for the largest karaoke audience ever!”

Within 24-hours after the Super Bowl, Flea took to the band’s website and said they had no choice but to mime their performance, because the NFL didn’t want to risk bad sound or some sort of technical issue.

The band has done the same thing before on a TV show, Flea said, but not since the 80s. “The Red Hot Chili Peppers stance on any sort of miming has been that we will absolutely not do it,” he wrote. “The last time we did it, or tried to, was in the late 80s. We were thrown off of ‘The Top of The Pops’ television program in the UK during rehearsals because we refused to mime properly. I played bass with my shoe.”

  • Axl Rose: Latest Scandal not so Scandalous

Axl Rose: Latest Scandal not so Scandalous

Axl Rose seems to get his fair share of negative press based on whatever latest scandal he’s involved in. However, the latest news on the rocker proves to be anything but scandalous.

According to New York Magazine writer Steve Fishman, who rented his New York City apartment to Axl Rose for two years, the rock star never set foot in the place and may very well be the best tenant ever.

In an article called “What Happened When Axl Rose Rented My Apartment”, the writer details his adventures, or lack thereof, of being the rocker’s landlord.

Fishman writes of how Rose wanted the apartment, was anxious to move in and how he was willing to pay 6 months of “extraordinary” rent in advance.

“Axl was in a hurry to get into the place, we were told,” writes Fishman. “And so we quickly decamped to Brooklyn. Then came move-in day. And then it went. So did a second and a third date. Still Axl didn’t move in.”

In total Rose rented the apartment for two years from 2010 to 2013 and Fishman believes his tenant never even set foot in the apartment.

“As far as I can tell, Axl never set foot in my place after his initial viewings,” writes Fishman. “I wondered if he remembered that he’d rented it. Maybe a superstar lives this way — renting apartments just in case, and then forgetting about them.”

Fishman admitted that he was worried about Rose’s reputation as one of those rockers who trash hotel rooms, but said that his experience was a far cry from what he expected.

“People have mixed views of Axl Rose, but as a landlord, I loved him,” said Fishman in the article. “If he ever needs a recommendation, I’ll happily write: Quiet, undemanding, and pays his rent.”

  • Axl Rose Talks Twitter With Jimmy Kimmel, Once Dressed As Ear Of Corn For Halloween

Axl Rose of legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses made a rare television appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. According to Entertainment Weekly, this was his first live TV interview in over 20 years.

At one point, Kimmel brought up the official Guns N’ Roses Twitter page.

“We have one of those?” Rose joked.

“I had a feeling you weren’t very involved in the tweeting,” said Kimmel.

“No, sometimes, yes I am,” he responded, as the discussion turned to fans asking questions through Twitter, which quickly turned to Kimmel asking questions from fans for him to answer right there on set.

The entire interview has been made available on the Jimmy Kimmel Live YouTube channel:

Rose also mentioned that he once dressed up as a giant ear of corn for Halloween. We imagine it looked something like a cross between these two images:

  • Axl Rose Said in 1994 that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was an Iconic Organization

50-year-old Axl Rose announced yesterday that he has “respectfully declined his induction as a member of Guns N’ Roses to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame,” in a letter obtained by the L.A. Times.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place in Cleveland on Saturday but Axl has decided to bow out of the appearance.

In 1994 Axl Rose gave a speech at Elton John’s induction to the Hall of Fame and said, “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the musicians who make the music that not only becomes the soundtrack to our lives but it actually helps us get through each day of our life.”

Two years later Guns N’ Roses fell apart.

After reading the letter he sent to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it seems that Rose declined the invitation because he thinks the induction ceremony would be an awkward and complicated affair. He went on to say that he thinks “the Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony doesn’t appear to be somewhere I’m actually wanted or respected.”

He has also requested that he not be “inducted in absentia” and warned people to resist accepting any induction on his behalf.

Towards the end of the letter he made it very clear that Guns N’ Roses will not be reunited: “For anyone to continue to ask, suggest or demand a reunion are misguided attempts to distract from our efforts with our current lineup of myself, Dizzy Reed, Tommy Stinson, Frank Ferrer, Richard Fortus, Chris Pitman, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal and DJ Ashba.”

While he claims he values his fans he went on to insist that he doesn’t owe them any happy endings.

He closed the letter by saying:

“Regardless of this decision and as hard to believe or as ironic as it may seem, I’d like to sincerely thank the board for their nomination and their votes for Guns’ induction. More importantly I’d like to thank the fans for being there over the years, making any success we’ve had possible and for enjoying and supporting Guns N’ Roses music.”

“I wish the Hall a great show, congratulations to all the other artists being inducted and to our fans we look forward to seeing you on tour!!”

Here are some Twitter reactions to his decision:
