Atlanta Shootings: 17-Year Old Boy Charged

After a gunman opened fire on several people in a Southwest Atlanta neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon, injuring four high school students and one other, a suspect is now in custody.

Marcellus Brooks, a 17-year old boy, was arrested and is being charged with five counts of aggravated assault.

Witnesses told FOX Atlanta that a group of 30 to 35 people were arguing when someone pulled a gun and started shooting. Four victims were shot in the lower body, one in the chest. As of this morning, three remain at Grady Memorial Hospital but are said to be in stable condition.

Shavien Dennis, the mother of one of the victims, said that her 17-year old daughter spent the night at Grady after being shot in the leg.

“She tried to run and realized she wasn’t running anymore,” Dennis said. “She was on the ground and she said blood was everywhere.”

Dennis’ daughter, a mother herself, had just left campus on her final day of school before graduation rehearsals.

Another parent, Glenda Williams, just happened to be in the area when the incident occurred and helped to apply pressure to a victim who was shot in the chest.

The shooting took place near Therrell High School around 4:00 p.m.

John Eaves, the Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, called the shootings “particularly upsetting and distressing,” saying, “When our young people are victimized by the crime of our city streets, it serves as a sad reminder of the challenges we as leaders confront in trying to make our streets safer for Fulton County families.”

A motive for the shooting has not yet been established. Officer John Chafee said in a statement, “Investigators are following up on information and we are progressing the investigation.”

Brooks, the shooter, was also arrested last month by MARTA police and charged with felony robbery for a March incident, according to court records. He was released on a $8,000 bond after only 15 days in jail.

Although the incident did not happen on campus and it is unclear if Brooks is or is not a student at Therrell, Kimberly Green with Atlanta Public Schools has said that extra security will be added on campus for the rest of the year and that students will not be permitted to carry book bags or backpacks for the remainder of the school year.

  • Atlanta High School Shooting: Possible Suspect Questioned

On Tuesday, five people were shot near Therrell High School in Atlanta. Authorities say that those who were injured are believed to be students at the high school, but no confirmation was announced. According to reports, the injuries were not life threatening, and the five people are now in a stable condition. Names of the victims were not released.

U.S. Marshals and the FBI responded to the incident, which happened at the corner of Panther Trail and Childress Drive.

A few hours after the shooting, the authorities have already started questioning a possible suspect. The statement came from Officer John Chafee, who said in an email that investigators are working on the case and they “are speaking with a possible suspect.”

The shootings happened at around 4 pm. The victims were immediately brought to Grady Memorial Hospital where they were treated for injuries. Out of the five victims, two are still said to be in the hospital. The authorities left the scene of the shooting at about 8 pm.

The FBI is still trying to find out if the shooter is a student at Therrell High School, but the investigators are looking into several leads as well. The motive for the shooting has not been determined yet.

Though the incident did not happen in Therrell High School, the campus was placed on lockdown on the afternoon of the shooting as a precaution for the students who were supposed to be participating in after-school activities.

One of the students of the high school, Hezekiah Bradford, reported that he and his twin brother witnessed a group of over 20 students running. Afterwards, they heard at least five gunshots. The two immediately ran to a gas station located near the school, and asked a woman to call 911 to report the incident.

“I’m worried for some of my friends,” Hezekiah said.

  • Atlanta Shootings: Possible Suspect in Custody

Five people, four of them students, were shot by a gunman near the campus of Therrell High School in Southwest Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon around 4:00 p.m.

The gunman opened fire on a group of approximately 20 people, each attempting to run away. Four were shot in the lower body, one was shot in the chest. As of this evening, one victim has been released and the others are said to be in stable condition at Grady’s Marcus Trauma Center.

Though the shooting did not happen on campus, the 900-student high school was placed on lockdown an all after-school activities were canceled. An announcement was made on Twitter.

An unidentified witness said that the gunman reached into his waistband and said he was going to “mess this (expletive) up” before he started shooting.

“I knew something was going to happen,” said the 11th grade student. “I was expecting a giant fight. I wasn’t expecting gun shots.”

Other witnesses close by said that they ran outside when they heard shots fired.

“Two were laying on the ground, a female and a male were put into an ambulance,” Ricky Johnson said. “They were moving, but that’s why I didn’t think it was life threatening. But, the paramedics were working on them.”

Now officers are said to have a possible suspect in custody after he turned himself in.

“Investigators are actively working this case and are speaking with a possible suspect,” Officer John Chafee wrote in a statement.

It is still not known if the shooter is a student at Therrell High School or what the motive was, but investigators are currently working on several leads.

Kimberly Green with Atlanta Public Schools has said that extra security will be added on Therrell’s campus for the rest of the year.
