  • Atlanta Hawks Open Training Camp Amidst Turmoil

The Atlanta Hawks opened training camp Tuesday at the University of Georgia amidst a cloud of a racially charged scandal that has forced owner Bruce Levenson to put his controlling share of the team up for sale and general manager Danny Ferry to take an indefinite leave of absence.

“This is a fluid situation,” coach Mike Budenholzer said at a media session Monday, according to The Associated Press.

Atlanta Hawks players seemed willing to accept Ferry back as general manager, even after he was recorded in a telephone conversation making derogatory comments about free agent Luol Deng and Deng’s African heritage. Ferry has maintained that he was reading off a scouting report and that those comments did not reflect his personal views.

“He was very remorseful,” said Al Horford, who has been with the Hawks longer than any other player. “He understood what he had done, and he’s trying to move forward and make it right.”

Kyle Korver talked about how the culture in the Atlanta Hawks organization has changed since Ferry took over.

“I did not want to come to Atlanta,” Korver said. “There were a lot of perceptions about the Hawks that were not good. True change starts at the center, at its core, like the guts of the whole thing. And I really believe Danny has done a good job being the general manager of this team, a really good job.”

But Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, who played most of his career in Atlanta and now serves as a vice president and team broadcaster, had a different view of the situation.

“It’s hard for people to forget,” said Wilkins. “I’m disturbed by anybody who makes those type of accusations, who has those type of views.”

Hawks CEO Steve Koonin accepted Ferry’s request to for an indefinite leave of absence but has resisted the calls of civil rights activists for Ferry’s firing. “Danny is on an indefinite leave of absence. There’s really not much to talk about in that area. We look forward to now playing basketball.”

  • Dwyane Wade Enters Miami Heat Lineup After Missing Nine Games

Dwyane Wade has been no stranger to injuries over the course of the 2013-2014 season, but he was able to return to the Miami Heat lineup during their game on Saturday. He has missed out on many games over the season, and just returned from a 9-game stretch that he was forced to sit out.

It was a game against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night when Dwyane Wade would return to the starting lineup. As a team that is currently fighting for the No.1 seed in the NBA playoffs, the Heat need every star to be playing, and unfortunately even with Wade’s return, the Heat lost to the Hawks 98-85.

As he continues to struggle, and with the playoffs starting in about a week, it could be risky for Wade to return now. In addition to his recent injury, he also almost missed the 2014 NBA All-Star game, and instead played limited minutes.

He has missed 28 games overall, with most of the absences due to his knee soreness. He has also missed time with an Achilles strain. The Heat are currently in a fierce fight with the Indiana Pacers heading into the final week of the regular season, and are currently half a game behind.

Speaking on his ability to play again, before the game Dwyane Wade said “I’m going to give it a go today. That’s the plan. The first thing was to get comfortable with it. You never know how severe it is until you try to strengthen it. Now, it’s just about getting comfortable and pushing it to see where you’re at.”

His recent hamstring injury kept him out for more time than he had missed during any other part of the season, and it was much more serious than he, or the rest of the team had initially thought.

There were a couple of other games recently when Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Wade was on the verge of returning, but the team ultimately held him out as a further precaution.

Despite missing about a third of the NBA season, Dwyane Wade returned on Saturday to score 24 points. In the games that he has played in, he is averaging 19.2 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game.

  • Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Arrested For DUI

Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Arrested For DUI

When the Atlanta Hawks hired former San Antonio Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer as their head coach back in May they must have has something a little different in mind.

Budenholzer was pulled over by a Georgie State Patrol trooper for not having tail lights. Upon confronting Budenholzer the officer claims to have smelled alcohol and administered a field sobriety test. Budenholzer, who refused to take a breathalyzer test, was arrested for DUI shortly afterward and taken an Atlanta jail.

Even worse for the Hawks is that Budenholzer was also said to have been in possession of illegal substances, although just what those were has not been released. While a DUI looks bad, it looks worse when it becomes driving under the influence of alcohol AND illegal drugs. The coach was released around 3:45 a.m. on a $1,524 bond.

It’s not unheard of for a player to be tagged with a violation such as this, but a coach is virtually unheard of. There was a lot of buzz around Budenholzer’s arrival in Atlanta and fans saw him as the answer to taking their franchise to the next level. However, these charges could bring those aspirations to a violent halt. Not only will Budenholzer face disciplinary action from the NBA, but it is completely feasible that he could be fired by the Hawks. The coach may have already blown this huge opportunity, and he would have no one to blame but himself.
