    George Clooney Speaks To Reporters

As George Clooney was escorted to a secret service van after being arrested in Washington D.C. during a protest outside of the Sudanese Embassy today, he made a couple of comments on the matter while speaking to the press:

Clooney told a reporter for The Daily Caller that he didn’t mention his planned protest to President Obama during their meeting Thursday, adding that he was at the time most concerned about the well-being of his father Nick, who was also arrested.

“I’m concerned with my father, making sure he’s okay right now, you know. He’s 78 years old and never been arrested before,” Clooney stated. When asked if he’d accomplished what he’d hoped to in regards to the protest, Clooney added, “we’ll find out, won’t we? Sorry officer. It’s a long process so we’ll see.”

The goal of the protest was to “demand immediate action to stop Sudan’s use of food as a weapon… half a million people in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile regions risk starvation because Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is blockading food and humanitarian aid.”

Along with Clooney and his father, Democratic Representatives Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Jim Moran of Virginia and Al Green of Texas were also arrested. Activists including NAACP President Ben Jealous, Martin Luther King III and John Prendergast of the Enough Protest were also in custody.

Fans of the Oscar-winning actor took to Twitter:

According to reports, Clooney, along with several of his activist colleagues were hauled off in handcuffs on Massachusetts Ave, after failing to comply with three verbal warnings.

The protest concerned Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir’s provocation of a humanitarian crisis and the blocking of aid from entering the Nuba Mountain region of South Sudan. The following clip depicts the situation in Sudan:

Clooney has stated that “we’re going to have a real humanitarian disaster,” if action isn’t taken in the region within the next few months, and seeks to draw more attention to the issue. The protestors held signs reading “Sudan: Stop Weapons of Mass Starvation,” and included Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia amongst its ranks.

  • Arrest Warrant Issued for Russell Brand

On Monday, Russell Brand was accused of grabbing a paparazzo’s iPhone out of his hand and throwing it through the window of a nearby law firm. We covered the story yesterday, when Russell tweeted his hilarious response to the accusations: “Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iphone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory.”

Brand has since had a warrant issued for his arrest on suspicion of simple criminal damages. The offense carries a fine of $700 dollars, probably not much to Brand, given the satisfaction of sticking it to the paparazzi.

So far, no word from Brand or his spokesman about the warrant. According to TMZ, Brand’s spokesman has contacted the law firm, offering to pay for the window damage.

Russell is still in New Orleans filming a movie, so we could see an arrest, or Brand may later be called in on a summons if they determine he is not a flight risk. We will post again as news becomes available.

  • South Korean Arrested For Retweeting “Long Live Kim Jong-il”

We told you last week how it was a war crime to use a smart phone in North Korea. It’s also apparently a crime to retweet the North Korean twitter account in South Korea.

Amnesty USA is reporting that Park Jeonggeun, a 24-year-old Socialist Party activist, was arrested for retweeting “long live Kim Jong-il” from North Korea’s official Twitter account. He is charged with helping “the enemy.”

Park, who claims that the re-tweet was meant to ridicule North Korea, has been in custody since January 11. He faces up to seven years in prison.

Amnesty International’s Asia-Pacific Director Sam Zarifi says that this is “a sad case of the South Korean authorities complete failure to understand sarcasm.”

“Imprisoning anyone for peaceful expression of their opinions violates international law but in this case, the charges against Park Jeonggeun are simply ludicrous and should be dropped immediately,” Zarifi said.

What’s even weirder is that the South Korean Socialist Party doesn’t even like or support North Korea. They frequently criticize the communist state for exploiting its labor force, outlawing trade unions and forcing people to work under harsh conditions.

“Park is a member of a party which openly criticizes North Korea but the absurd case against him is not an isolated one. For too long South Korean authorities have been using the National Security Law (NSL) to restrict basic freedoms and gag civil society in the name of national security,” Zarifi added.

Park told Amnesty International that his intention was “to lampoon North Korea’s leaders for a joke. I did it for fun.”

Park has a history of poking fun at North Korea. He changes their propaganda posters on Twitter to replace a smiling soldier’s face with his own sad face and change the gun to a bottle of whiskey.

He disagrees with North Korean communism, but he demands he be allowed to know and learn about their culture.

“The NSL has a chilling effect on freedom of expression in South Korea. It is used not to address threats to national security, but instead to intimidate people and limit their rights to free speech. It should be reformed in line with human rights law, and if the government cannot do this, it must be abolished,” Zarifi said.

Zarifi claims that South Korea continues to use the NSL to silence opponents of the country’s view towards North Korea. Numerous arrests have allegedly been made against people for “propagating or instigating a rebellion against the state.”

There are other investigations under way in the country against those who have posted materials related to North Korea, where the police have deemed the materials to be “enemy benefitting.”

  • Rolando McClain’s Epic Arrest Picture Blows Twitter Up

Rolando McClain, in case you’re unaware, is a professional athlete who plays for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders. McClain was very recently arrested for allegedly holding a gun to the side of someone’s head and discharging the weapon next to the person’s ear. Whenever a professional athlete makes the news in such a manner, the reaction, especially in today’s age of instant communication, is swift.

In McClain’s case, however, his newfound Internet fame is owed just as much, if not more, to the amazing image that resulted of his apprehension than the alleged crime.

The image, and the details of the crime, were recorded at the SFGate’s Oakland Raiders section, and the article in question has a high resolution version of the image in question. It’s definitely worth the click.

Needless to say, McClain’s inopportune grin has caused a level of viral popularity for the linebacker, especially in the land of Twitter, where McClain was clowned, scolded, and even complimented for his choice in arrest photos. While his mugshot photos weren’t nearly as fun as the arrest image was, they, too hit the sports blogs because of the subject matter.

Others were less impressed. In fact, Peter King seems downright offended:

And you, Rolando McClain. Just shameful. In town for your grandfather’s funeral? And, allegedly, you point gun at man’s head? Who ARE you? 20 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Others took the time to educate the masses concerning Alabama’s liberal approach to gunplay:

All four charges against #Raiders MLB Rolando McClain are misdemeanors under Alabama law. Yes, even firing a gun next to someone’s ear. 21 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

As long as the bullet doesn’t penetrate anyone, it’s all good in Alabama, apparently. The fan reaction was split between support and admonishment:

Rolando McClain, not surprised. One of the meanest people I’ve ever met. Beast on the field, ass off the field. #rolltide sincerely, Milkman 3 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone · powered by @socialditto

As for McClain, he apparently hasn’t returned to Oakland as of this time. His lawyer is, of course, maintaining his client’s innocence.

  • Escaped Convict Taunts Police Using Facebook, Gets Arrested

We are always looking for new applications for social media outlets right? How can we get our message out to more people? How can we create community amongst customers? How we can get 40,000 people to follow us as we escape from the law? Whoa, wait a minute. That last one doesn’t seem very ‘marketing’ oriented does it? Well, that’s because it’s not and it is really a slow news day at least from this blogger’s perspective.

So let’s instead follow the tale of the rocket scientist who escaped from a jail in England and has spent the last 4 months taunting police through his Facebook presence. I say rocket scientist because it wasn’t like he just went to jail and was getting ready for a long stint in the slammer (very 40’s gangster film sounding isn’t it?). No, in fact, he was getting close to the end of a seven year sentence for aggravated burglary but now he may have to find another way to work out his aggravation.

    Mashable reports

A British man who has spent the four months following his prison break taunting police with clues and rude gestures on Facebook has finally been caught by Scotland Yard.

After he disappeared from a minimum-security prison in Suffolk in late September, the man (named Craig Lynch) posted status updates about what kind of steak he was eating, the temperature, and his New Year’s plans, stopping just shy of giving police enough information to find him. He even posted profile pictures with signs mocking his pursuers.

How about this for a marketing angle. You can breath new life into the Robert Downery, Jr. movie Sherlock Holmes with the obvious Scotland Yard connection. Maybe a little time travel for Mr. Holmes to the future could be in the works for Sherlock Holmes 2 as he tracks notorious villains and the like using social media. Heck, he already has the CGI stunt part of the future down so why not go all out?

Turns out Mr. Lynch may have been more of a prophet than anything else

The “About Me” section of his Facebook profile said: “You’ll have a laugh with me but it will end in tears. It always does.”

Not the happiest of endings I suppose but what did he expect, privacy with Facebook?
