    Arnold Schwarzenegger took to social media shortly after Sly’s Oscars upset, showing his support for his friend.

    “@officialslystallone To me, you’re the best, no matter what they say,” the former California governor captioned a short video clip.

    A number of Sylvester Stallone fans followed suit, reacting via Twitter to what many believed was an obvious snub.

    Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello are now officially husband and wife!

    The eye-candy couple said “I do” at The Breakers Palm Beach resort in Florida on Sunday, surrounded by nearly 400 of their close family and friends, including Sofia’s Modern Family castmates.

    The 43-year-old actress’ son, Manolo, walked his mother down the aisle to marry her 38-year-old fiancé, who wore a John Varvatos tux.

    According to People magazine, Vergara looked like a princess wearing “a white strapless silk-tulle dress with a sweetheart neckline and hand-embroidered 3D embellishments on the bodice. A pearl beaded belt highlighted her waist, and a huge detachable skirt brought the drama. She finished her sparkly look with Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings to the tune of 55 carats, plus more diamonds by the designer in her hair and on her wrist.”

    Modern Family castmates Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ty Burell, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill, Ariel Winter, and Sarah Hyland were on hand to wish their friends well. Other celebrity guests included her Hot Pursuit co-star Reese Witherspoon, his Magic Mike co-star Channing Tatum and wife Jenna Dewan, True Blood‘s Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harvey Weinstein, Georgina Chapman, Roselyn Sanchez and more were also in attendance.

    According to CBS News, the guests were asked to check their cellphones and cameras into a security table prior to entering the wedding venue.

    The ceremony was the culmination of a weekend-long event that included parties, a rehearsal dinner at The Brazilian Court Hotels’ Café Boulud, followed by a dessert party back at the Breakers that lasted into the wee hours of the morning on Saturday.

    In lieu of gifts, the couple has requested that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

    This is Sofia Vergara’s second marriage and the first for Joe Manganiello.

  • Emilia Clarke Headed to Silver Screen Sooner Than Expected in “Me Before You”

    Emilia Clarke, best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones, is headed to the silver screen sooner than expected in a film previously scheduled to premiere in June. Instead, fans can see Emilia Clarke in Me Before You in March.

    Me Before You is based on the JoJo Moyes novel, and was initially scheduled for a June 3 release. Sources tell Deadline the change was made to draw in female viewers, especially those off from both high school and college spring break.

    Emilia Clarke plays Lou, “a small town girl caught between dead-end jobs; and Will (Sam Claflin), a high-profile, successful man who becomes wheelchair bound following an accident. The two get off to a rocky start, but Lou becomes determined to prove to Will that life is worth living and as they embark on a series of adventures together.”

    Jenna Coleman of Doctor Who fame and Emilia Clarke’s Game of Thrones costar Charles Dance also star in the film.

    This isn’t Clarke’s first foray into the film world. She appeared in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator Genisys and will also hit the big screen in Voice from the Stone, which is in post-production.

    Lest fans forget, it’s worth a reminder that Emilia Clarke was named Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive just a month ago. There are no doubt many new and exciting things in her future.

    Olivia Munn is just one of several celebrities scheduled to appear on the second season of the climate change-themed docu-series Years of Living Dangerously. David Letterman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cecily Strong, and Ian Somerhalder are also among the lineup for the show’s second season.

    “Years of Living Dangerously is bold, audacious and has a proven track record. By combining the access and reputation of National Geographic with Hollywood’s brightest minds and journalism’s heaviest hitters, we plan to create even greater impact with the new season and awaken all of us to the reality of our global situation,” Courteney Monroe, chief executive officer of National Geographic Channels, said in a statement. “National Geographic has an unrivaled 127-year history of inspiring people to care about the planet, and this series will carry on that legacy and be supported by the incredible global reach of the National Geographic brand that is unmatched in television today.”

    Olivia Munn and the rest of the celebrity lineup will serve as correspondents on distinct episodes of the show, giving first-person accounts of how the effects of climate change have impacted different locations.

    Best known as a TV and film star, Olivia Munn has appeared on New Girl and starred in 2015’s Mortdecai.

    She is set to play the role of Psyclocke in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, due out in 2016.

    This stint will serve as David Letterman’s first TV appearance since giving up the helm at The Late Show. Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the show’s executive producers.

    Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger may be divorced, but that didn’t keep her from celebrating the former ‘governator’s’ 68th birthday along with him and two of their kids in Beverly Hills on Thursday.

    Schwarzenegger met up with daughters Katherine Schwarzenegger, who is 25, and Christina Schwarzenegger, who is 23, at the Montage hotel, where Maria Shriver joined them for dinner.

    Maria Shriver, as always, looked lovely. She wore a navy blue eyelet dress accessorized with a white bag with a gold chain. She wore a navy clip in her hair. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a bit more casual, wearing a black polo shirt and slacks. He arrived wearing tortoiseshell sunglasses.

    It was back in 2011 that Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted he fathered a child with his family’s housekeeper Mildred Baena. Shortly thereafter he and Maria Shriver split up. He has since developed a relationship with the boy–Joseph Baena. Joseph is the same age as Arnold and Maria’s youngest son Christopher.

    Despite their split, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have worked hard to co-parent their four children. That’s apparently been a bit easier than most might imagine, since she celebrated his birthday this week with the family, too.

    Could you imagine going out to dinner with your ex on his or her birthday? Of course it has been four years since Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger split. Maybe time has softened her heart and allowed for some forgiveness.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger recently enjoyed a return to the big screen in Terminator Genisys. Maria Shriver traveled to Berlin with her kids to attend the film’s premiere in that city.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger is bringing smiles to faces all around. The Original Terminator was tagged in a recent Reddit post by a fan, who was then shocked and elated that his idol not only answered him back, but sent along a hand-written note for the man’s father.

    “Terminator 2 was the first movie I saw with my dad in a movie theater,” the poster explained. “From then on we saw a bunch of movies together along the years, including all the terminator movies until now, it was our franchise. We both loved it and shared some great conversations with those movies. My dad loved Arnold’s catchphrase “I’ll be back” and he would just rewind it every time. I have only my dad to thank for my love for movies, it’s one of those things we always shared together.”

    The post went on to explain how the man’s father has since developed dementia, and does not respond much to almost anything. That is, until he and his son went to see Arnold Schwarzenegger in the new Terminator: Genisys film.

    During the whole movie I was actually surprised to see my dad enjoying it, not because it was this amazing film we never seen before but because for MONTHS he hasn’t smile, he used to be a very happy man and always had a big smile on his face. I know it may sound dumb but it felt like a miracle!

    “I looked at my dad and he has this huge smile on his face when he saw Arnold smiling…that’s when I lost it and began to cry (out of joy), I haven’t seen that genuine smile for so long. It was literally the best birthday present I could ever get.”

    Then came the biggest surprise. Schwarzenegger responded to the man’s Reddit post with:

    “Wow. I’m in Korea on a whirlwind tour but you stopped me in my tracks. This is so touching. Thank you for sharing. I’d like to say ‘this is why I do this’ but you should know it was you who made your father smile. It was your presence and caring. Happy birthday, you’ve got a lot of wisdom for 30 years.”

    What is more, Schwarzenegger scrawled a handwritten note to the man’s father, apparently with a stylus on a tablet, and posted it for the man to see. The note read:

    “I am honored that my silly smile in Terminator made you smile, but I hope you find real joy and strength in what a wonderful child you have brought into the world and raised.”

    Many other Redditors also sent encouraging messages along to the man and his father. The response came back:

    “Wow, thank you all for your kind responses. I shared this with my whole family including my dad’s brothers. Everyone here, including Arnold have made a family very happy.”

    Cyrus was photographed kissing Victoria’s Secret model Stella Maxwell last week, and not just some little peck to raise eyebrows. The two were lip-locked in a photo obtained by Mail Online, with Cyrus grabbing Maxwell’s butt.

    Then, in a more recent Instagram photo posted by Miley herself, she is shown toking up with Snoop Dogg.

    In a recent interview with Howard Stern, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the father of former Miley boyfriend Patrick Schwarzenegger, said he thinks Miley is terrific.

    “When I did meet Miley Cyrus, she came skiing on our holidays, I found out that she was a fantastic person,” Arnold said. “She is a wonderful person,” he insists.

    “Then she has this career side where she has to be a little bit ‘out there’ and a little bit different. Maybe because she grew up in a music family. I mean, so what? It didn’t bother me.”

    Arnold Schwarzenegger is busy touting his upcoming film, Terminator Genisys, but during a recent visit to Howard Stern’s radio show the talk turned to Maria Shriver. He and Shriver divorced after 25 years of marriage when she learned he fathered a child with the family’s former housekeeper, Mildred Baena.

    “This was without a doubt the biggest setback and the biggest failure [in my life],” Arnold Schwarzenegger told Howard Stern about the end of their marriage. “Not only failure, but you really feel like, ‘I’m to blame for it. It was me that screwed up,’ and you can’t point the finger at anyone else.”

    The two apparently tried couples therapy, but to no avail. Arnold Schwarzenegger calls couples therapy “the biggest mistake” he’s ever made. Where do you suppose fathering a child with the housekeeper falls on his list of mistakes?

    “Because the guy was so full of sh*t,” Schwarzenegger said of the therapist. “He said more crap and more nonsense. It was absolutely totally counterproductive to our future relationship, or to any hope to get together or anything like that. It was just nonsense talk.”

    “Maria talked me into it, and I knew instinctively maybe I shouldn’t go because I screwed up,” he added. “I don’t have to go through anyone to have him explain to me anything. You know, I apologized to Maria, I apologized to the kids, and I tried to move forward and make the best of it…It has worked out really so well with the help of Maria, with the help of the kids, but not because of the shrink or some psychiatrist.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger insists he still has a great relationship with his four children with Maria– Katherine, Christina, Patrick, and Christopher.

    “My kids are a straight 10,” he gushed. “I am so proud of them and I’m so in love with them. I love my kids so much.”

    Interestingly enough, he even referred to Maria Shriver as his wife during the interview while telling a story of Maria and the kids surprising him in Berlin at the premiere of Terminator Genisys.

    Schwarzenegger even talked about his son with the housekeeper–Joseph Baena.

    “He totally understands the situation and all that, so it has all worked out so well,” he shared. “It’s a very tough situation for him, it’s a very tough situation for my kids…but it has happened, and now we have to kind of try and figure it out, right?”

    Arnold Schwarzenegger minced few words during his chat with Howard Stern. Do you think he came across as sorry for his dalliances with the family’s former housekeeper?

    By saying that couples therapy was the “the biggest mistake” he’s ever made, it kind of seems like Arnold doesn’t quite get the damage he’s done.

    Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones and more recently as Sarah Conor in the new film Terminator: Genisys, gave an uncanny Arnold Schwarzenegger impression despite hobbling around on crutches.

    The 28-year-old star ditched the crutches on Friday at a photocall for the film in Paris, and it is still unknown what ails the star. Her rep had no comment about her condition.

    The crutches first made their appearance last week in Spain, where Emilia is filming her latest film, Me Before You.

    While in London this week to promote the Terminator film, Clarke hobbled about wearing a powder half-sleeve blue Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2015 shift dress that featured child-like illustrations and the Italian words, “Tu la mamma piu bella del mondo,” which translates roughly to “You are the most beautiful mom in the world.” Odd choice considering the actress has no children of her own.

    It was when Emilia Clarke joined Terminator co-stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, 67, model and actress Cara Delevingne, 22, Jake Gyllenhaal, 34, and British rapper Tinie Tempah, 26, that she schooled them with her impression of the former governor of California.

    In Terminator: Genisys, Clarke plays a younger version of main heroine Sarah Connor. The movie will be released on July 1.

  • Reba McEntire to Return to CMT Awards Stage for First Time in Ten Years

    Reba McEntire is returning to the CMT Awards stage on Wednesday night for the first time in ten years. She and Darius Rucker were just announced as additions to the night’s performance lineup.

    A whole slew of country music greats will both perform and present during the evening, but not many have the longevity and popularity in the country music world as that of Reba McEntire.

    The 2015 CMT Awards will take place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Erin Andrews of Fox Sports and Dancing With the Stars fame, along with Pitch Perfect 2’s Brittany Snow will serve as co-hosts for the event.

    In addition to Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker–he will perform outside the arena–other acts at Wednesday night’s CMT Awards include Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, and Sam Hunt. Lady Antebellum take the stage, too, alongside DJ-producer Zedd for a very special country-EDM mashup.

    CMT Awards presenters include Arnold Schwarzenegger (not a name many associate with country music–but ok), Billy Ray Cyrus, Cole Swindell, David Spade, and Hunter Hayes.

    Carrie Underwood is leader of the CMT Awards pack, with five nominations.

    It’s uncertain what Reba McEntire will sing, but it’s also quite likely that fans don’t care. Just seeing her perform on the CMT Awards stage is more than enough–for those in the audience as well as viewers at home.

    Emilia Clarke’s role as Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons, on the hit HBO show Game of Thrones, has seen its share of nudity. So when word broke that Emilia Clarke had been offered — but refused — the role of Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey, there were puzzled looks all around.

    “There is a huge amount of nudity in the film,” Emilia Clarke explained.

    Come again? This is an actress whose character on Game of Thrones has shown plenty of skin. What gives?

    “I really wanted to work with [Fifty Shades director] Sam Taylor-Johnson because she’s fucking amazing,” Emilia Clarke told Marie Claire. “But there is a huge amount of nudity in the film. I’ll never say, ‘I’m never doing nudity,’ because I’ve already done it, but I thought I might get stuck in a pigeonhole that I would have struggled to get out of.”

    Ah, that makes more sense. It’s one thing to be known for a role that occasionally sports nudity. It’s another to become known as “the actress who does nudity.”

    All that running around with her clothes off may seem to come easy for Emilia Clarke, but she admits to some insecurity.

    “I remember when everything first kicked off, I Googled myself. You just do, it’s instinct. But never again,” she said. “It just takes that one person who says: ‘She’s a fat bitch,’ and you’re like: ‘I’m a fat bitch!’”

    Emilia Clarke has her sights set on another project due to be released this summer. For Terminator Genisys, Emilia Clarke will have to step into a role that Linda Hamilton muscled through in the first two Terminator films — that of Sarah Connor. So Emilia Clarke got herself pumped because she wanted to impress Arnold Schwarzenegger.

    “Those fucking guns are super heavy,” she says of the film’s props. “You’re running with them a lot of the time, and I needed to keep up with/be better than the boys. I needed to know what to do to have Arnold go: [adopting Arnie accent] ‘very nice’. That was my goal.”

    According to imbd.com, a college campus is plagued by a series of murders following a 1995 sorority pledge that went horribly wrong. The murders mark the 20th anniversary of the original crime.

    The first trailer for Scream Queens was released on Thursday.

    Abigail Breslin is in a new film with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ordinarily it is Arnold Schwarzenegger who gets to play the soulless creature bent on one deadly mission. This time Abigail Breslin gets to play that part.

    Abigail Breslin is a zombie. The film is called Maggie, and it just hit theaters in the U.S. today. In the film, Schwarzenegger plays a small-town farmer whose daughter (Abigail Breslin) is infected with a virus that transforms her into a zombie.

    When Abigail Breslin visited Late Night with Seth Meyers recently, she related a story from the set of Maggie about her first time meeting the Governator.

    “It was our first big scene together and I’m in hair and make-up… and the make-up artist and I we were friends, and so we were talking, and I was talking about [an ex-boyfriend], and I was like, ‘I can’t believe he un-friended me on Facebook, this is so rude, he messed me up and now he has to un-friend me? Like, friend me back, I want to un-friend him, I want that right.’

    “And I was complaining on and on and she kept being like, ‘Abi, Abi,’ I was like, ‘What? Why are you defending him to me?’ She’s like, ‘Turn around.’

    “And I turned around and Arnold was standing there. And he was like, ‘Abigail, who is this guy?’

    Schwarzenegger was obviously not pleased with how the ex had treated Abigail Breslin. So she jokingly offered to send her own T-1000 after him.

    “It’s like, ‘You want his number?,’” she joked to Seth Meyers.

    “No, I wouldn’t do that to somebody but he was just giving me advice, like, ‘Don’t be with him.’ It was really fun. You see Arnold Schwarzenegger and you’re like, ‘Oh he’s the Terminator, he’s this big movie action icon, Governor [of California].’ You wouldn’t think that he was as well known or anything like that because he’s just so nice and normal and super sweet,” she said.

    However, the Kennedy clan, including parents Arnold and Maria Shriver, is welcoming in their realm with open arms.

    On Wednesday the 21-year-old USC student dined out with his family at Palm steakhouse in Beverly Hills and warmly greeted Miley Cyrus when the joined them.

    Charlize Theron will reportedly join Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger in Australia next Sunday at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. It is expected that Sean Penn and Theron’s adopted son, Jackson, will be on hand as well.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger will already be in Australia around that time, which makes meeting up with Charlize Theron even more convenient. The former governor of California will be there for the Arnold Classic Australia event, which curates a collection of bodybuilding competitions and fitness expos at the Melbourne Convention And Exhibition Centre.

    Charlize Theron recently filmed Dark Places–a movie based on yet another book by Gillian Flynn. Flynn wrote the book upon which the movie Gone Girl is based. Theron plays the survivor of an horrific murder, in which her mother and sisters were killed, in the 1980s.

    She is presently lending her voice to an animated film called Kubo and the Two Strings. The movie tells the tale of Kubo, who has a quiet, normal life in his small village until a spirit from the past turns his life upside down by re-igniting an age-old vendetta.

    Charlize Theron made news in recent weeks for a comment Sean Penn made about their relationship. When asked about his ‘girlfriend’ by a reporter, he insisted she wasn’t merely a girlfriend, but ‘the love of his life.’

    Patrick Schwarzenegger and Miley Cyrus enjoyed their first Valentine’s Day together this weekend, and it seems they achieved pure Valentine bliss. The son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver has come under fire recently for becoming involved with Miley Cyrus, but the two really seem very happy. Their romantic day seemed perfectly appropriate for the 21 and 22-year olds.

    Patrick Schwarzenegger took to Instagram to share his Valentine’s Day bliss. He shared a photo of himself with the ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer.

    Miley was even dressed appropriately. That’s not something Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus’s daughter is known for either.

    “Luckiest guy in the world,” Patrick Schwarzenegger wrote when captioning the following shot.

    Not one to be outdone, Miley Cyrus shared her own Instagram shots–one of her with Patrick Schwarzenegger and another with an impressive balloon arrangement he gave her for Valentine’s Day.

    Despite recent criticism, you must admit that Miley Cyrus and Patrick Schwarzenegger make an adorable couple. Do you think she will be a bad influence on him or might he turn the bad girl a little bit better instead?

    Sources say Miley is taking this relationship–that started back in November–slow. Since her split from Liam Hemsworth, she has been a bit relationship shy.

    Terminator Genisys: Reboot Trailer Online

    Paramount Pictures released the trailer for Terminator Genisys Thursday, and the clip has already garnered over eight million views on YouTube.

    The film is the first of a planned remake/prequel/sequel/reboot trilogy, and Genisys is set to be released on July 1, 2015. The two sequels have the scheduled release dates of May 19, 2017 and June 29, 2018, respectively.

    The synopsis of the film reads, “The year is 2029. John Connor, leader of the resistance continues the war against the machines. At the Los Angeles offensive, John’s fears of the unknown future begin to emerge when TECOM spies reveal a new plot by SkyNet that will attack him from both fronts; past and future, and will ultimately change warfare forever.”

    Arnold Schwarzenegger reprises his iconic role as the Terminator T-800 model, and the trailer features a new Sarah Conner (played by Emilia Clarke), a new Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) and a new, heavily scarred John Connor (Jason Clarke). A new, liquid metal T-1000 model is played by South Korean actor Byung-hun Lee.

    Fans of the Terminator series seem a bit skeptical over the latest reworking of the cash-cow franchise:

    All in all, the trailer does feature a scene in which Schwarzenegger dives into helicopter blades.

    Terminator Genysis was directed by Alan Taylor, and written by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. The film had a budget of roughly $170 million.

    Maria Shriver is reportedly upset that her son, Patrick Schwarzenegger, is dating Miley Cyrus.

    The 21-year-old actor, who has reportedly had a crush on the pop star for a long time, has been dating Cyrus for several weeks. Inquisitr reports that the pair have been spotted a number of times engaging in some serious PDA.

    They also reportedly took some rather risqué pics in a photo booth at Miley’s 22nd birthday party, and apparently, the news of the relationship isn’t sitting too well with the famed Kennedy.

    “The birthday party with all the penis pictures disgusted her. That was the worst thing Miley could have done,” a source told channel24. “Maria is very, very worried about the influence Miley’s having on Patrick. She fully believes that you become who you surround yourself with and she’s always been so happy with the friends Patrick chooses, she never saw this coming.”

    Sources told HollywoodLife.com that Schwarzenegger is falling pretty hard for Cyrus.

    “Miley has been his celebrity crush forever, so he is now living a dream come true,” said the source. “She is so cool and he loves hanging out with her. They have so much fun together.”

    It could become a lot worse for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ex. There are rumors circulating that Miley Cyrus is pregnant with Patrick Schwarzenegger’s baby.

    “In late October, she mentioned that her period was late,” a source allegedly told Life & Style. “She took two pregnancy tests. One came back negative — and the other came back positive. Friends are convinced she’s in the early stages of pregnancy.”

    Remember people, these are just rumors. Nothing has been confirmed and time and time again, rumors surface that the Wrecking Ball singer is pregnant.

  • Maria Shriver Removed from Arnold Schwarzenegger Portrait

    Maria Shriver has apparently been removed from a portrait of former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The small image of the former first lady appeared on a lapel pin worn by Schwarzenegger in the portrait, but since the couple have been going through a divorce initially wrought with scandal, it seems the former ‘governator’ has had the image painted over.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger reportedly cheated on Maria Shriver with the family’s long time housekeeper, Mildred Baena. Not only did he cheat on Shriver, he also fathered a child with Baena. In fact, Baena and Maria Shriver were at one point pregnant at the same time–both with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s sons.

    It was just this past week that Arnold Schwarzenegger was the featured star at the unveiling of this portrait in Sacramento. It was then that it became quite apparent to all who knew what the portrait entailed when first worked on, that Maria Shriver was removed from the final work.

    The Washington Post reports that former Schwarzenegger aide Clay Russell confirmed in an e-mail on Friday that the portrait had once included a small image of Shriver on a lapel pin Schwarzenegger wore.

    The artist worked on the portrait sometime during the then-governor’s first term in office and prior to the couple’s separation. When the portrait was unveiled Monday, it no longer had the small image of Shriver, although it was unclear exactly when it had been painted over.

    Maria Shriver is, of course, part of the Kennedy political family. She filed for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger back in 2011 and returned to her career in broadcast journalism, via which she frequently makes appearances on NBC.

    It’s unlikely that Maria Shriver is either aware of or concerned about having been removed from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s lapel. Even though she handled his cheating scandal graciously, she likely is relieved to be free of his unfaithful ways.

    Star Trek alum George Takei has become the well-broadcast voice of the gay community on social media. He has championed the cause of bullied gay teens and marriage equality in general. He even once offered that his own name “Takei” (which, he famously explained at William Shatner’s roast, rhymes with “toupeé”) could be used in the place of the word “gay”. He lives his life in such a way as to stand for his principles, including gay advocacy, and not letting America forget about the prison camps that he and his family were placed in during World War II.

    But George Takei was not always open about his homosexuality. While Hollywood was quietly accepting of gay people, much of middle America was not. Shatner’s on-screen kiss with Nichelle Nichols as Uhura, the first televised interracial kiss, was tough enough for America to handle, A gay Starfleet offficer might have been too much.

    But Takei did eventually decide to come out, and not in a quiet way. He became a crusader. Now, in his recent interview with Winq, he explains what made him finally decide to stay quiet no longer. And that reason was Arnold Schwarzenegger.

    “When Arnold Schwarzenegger ran for the Governor of California’s office he ran by saying, ‘I’m from Hollywood, I’ve worked with gays and lesbians, some of my best friends are gay.’ I assumed, therefore, he was pro-gay. But when the Marriage Equality Bill landed on his desk he played to the reactionary conservative element of the Republican party and vetoed it. Both Brad [George’s husband] and I were raging, our blood was boiling.

    “That night, we saw all these young people pouring out onto Santa Monica Boulevard, venting their rage against Schwarzenegger. They inspired me. I’d spent a lifetime being silent on the issue… now I had to speak up.”

    Takei says that he has learned that a militant approach is not the way for him to further the idea of equality in America. He does it through humor.

    “I’ve learned over the years that you don’t necessarily make a point with teeth-gritting seriousness; sometimes tongue-in-cheek puts the issue into the larger context.”
