  • Apple May Allow iOS Users to Change Default Apps

Apple May Allow iOS Users to Change Default Apps

Apple may (finally!) be on the verge of allowing other apps to be set as the defaults in iOS.

Since iOS was introduced, users have not been able to change the default apps, such as Mail, Safari and Music. While other apps could be installed and used, they could never be set as the defaults. Any clicked web links would still open Safari and any clicked email links would still use Mail. While Safari and Mail are both extremely capable programs, there are other apps that offer different advantages and, in some cases, are better. Microsoft Outlook, for example, routinely wins praise for its features, not to mention integration with the rest of Office.

According to Bloomberg, people familiar with the matter say Apple may finally be ready to give up some control and let users set their preferred apps as the defaults. The move is being considered amid ongoing scrutiny and accusations that Apple’s apps have an unfair advantage over its rivals, an argument that certainly has weight to it. While some tech savvy individuals may opt to use other apps for browsing and email, and jump through the necessary hoops to make it work, the average user will simply use the easiest option.

Apple is also said to be considering a similar change for the music service on the HomePod, as well as letting users change the default music service when using Siri on an iOS device. While the sources say nothing has been finalized, it’s possible these changes could happen later this year.

Apple has been pushing the iPad as a computer replacement for some time. This is an important and necessary step that should have been taken years ago to assist that goal. Hopefully, with new opportunities available, it will further encourage developers to create desktop-class apps in categories they otherwise might have ignored.

  • Google Launching Google Play Protect to Help Protect Against Malicious Apps

Google Launching Google Play Protect to Help Protect Against Malicious Apps

Android has solidified its position as the dominant mobile operating system (OS) on the market in large part due to its open nature. Any company can license Android and install it on their hardware.

Similarly, the Google Play Store has enjoyed the reputation of being much easier to publish apps to than the Apple App Store. Unfortunately, that has resulted in a number of instances where malicious apps have slipped through the review process.

Now, in an effort to combat rogue apps, Google is launching Google Play Protect, a suite of services designed to protect Android phones. The company says the software “is always updating, and automatically takes action to keep your data and device safe, so you don’t have to lift a finger.”

Play Protect uses machine learning to identify new threats and will proactively remove them. The software also scans for bad behavior from existing apps, letting you know when one accesses data or services it shouldn’t.

Play Protect also includes features to help users whose phones are lost or stolen.

“To help in these times of need, we’re launching Find My Device as part of Google Play Protect. With Find My Device you can locate, ring, lock and erase your Android devices—phones, tablets, and even watches.”

Google’s announcement is a welcome one, and should be a significant security improvement for Android users around the world.

  • Apple App Store Growing Fast, Paid $20 Billion to App Developers in 2016

Apple App Store Growing Fast, Paid $20 Billion to App Developers in 2016

The Apple App Store has paid out over $20 billion to developers in 2016, which is an increase of over 40% over 2015, according to Apple. They also said that January 1, 2017 had the highest dollar volume of app purchases of any single day in the Apple App Store’s history, with over $240 million in sales. Since the App Store launched in 2008, developers have earned over $60 billion.

“2016 was a record-shattering year for the App Store, generating $20 billion for developers, and 2017 is off to a great start with January 1 as the single biggest day ever on the App Store,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We want to thank our entire developer community for the many innovative apps they have created — which together with our products — help to truly enrich people’s lives.”

Apple also noted that December 2016 was an amazing month for App purchases, hitting over $3 billion in sales.

Subscription billings, which became available just this Fall in all categories, are one of the fastest growing segments of app sales. There are over 20,000 apps that can be subscribed to for a monthly fee including popular services such as Netflix, HBO Now, Line, Tinder and MLB.com At Bat. Subscription based apps generated $2.7 billion in billings in 2016, up 74% over 2015.

  • Google Launches ‘Get Trips’ Mobile App

Google Launches ‘Get Trips’ Mobile App

Google has created a comprehensive new travel app, Get Trips, available for both Android & iOS mobile devices, that push it further into the travel industry. The new travel app, targeted toward sight seeing consumers, is both a trip planner and coordinator, giving you helpful suggestions on things to see nearby a destination as well as keeping your reservation info in one convenient place.

    Just Be Happy

Google pointed out a study that concluded 74% of travellers are most stressed with the logistics of travel. “Most of the happiness gleaned from vacation is dependent upon the stress level of the vacation,” said Shawn Achor, CEO of GoodThink which conducted the study and author of the book Before Happiness. “Poorly planned and stressful vacations eliminate the positive benefit of time away. The less the stress, the more likely you will experience a positive benefit from the time off. A positive, well-managed vacation can make you happier and less stressed, and you can return with more energy at work and with more meaning in your life.”

Personalized Tour Guide in Your Pocket

“Knowing what to do when your holiday starts can turn what’s supposed to be fun into a lot of work,” said Stefan Frank, Product Manager for Google Trips in a blog post. “You might get recommendations from friends, travel guides, or online reviews — but figuring out how to squeeze everything you want to do into a finite window of time can be stressful, especially when you’re in a new place, often with limited access to the web.”

Google Trips according to Google is a “personalized tour guide in your pocket” with each trip organized by day plans, reservations, things to do, food and drink, and much more. Google says that all of the apps features work offline too, which is incredibly helpful to those traveling without the benefit of expensive phone connections and inconsistent wifi. You can create the trip entirely in advance and simply download it to your phone.

    Planning a Day is Easy

Google Trips includes day plans for the top 200 cities in the world and features the most popular itineraries, automatically generated from data Google has gathered from other travellers. It may sound creepy, but Google knows where just about everybody is at all times and keep a record of it, just in case it decides to build an app like this one. Don’t forget, you agreed to it when you added any Google app to your mobile device.

“Say your friends told you that you have to see the Sagrada Familia — and you’re looking for suggestions on things to do around that spot,” says the Google Travel team. “Press the “+” button in the day plans tile to jump into a map view containing all the top attractions in your destination. If you’re time constrained, you can specify above the map whether you have just the morning or afternoon, versus a full day. Then simply tap and pin the Sagrada Familia to build your itinerary around it. Google Trips automatically fills in the day for you.”

    It Keeps Your Info Too

Google Trips ensures that you don’t have to scramble or have an internet connection when you have to find your reservations for planes, trains, automobile or hotels. This eliminates the panic we know that many of you feel when you just can’t connect, the data is hard coded into your phone!

  • Google+ Upgrades to a core Google Apps for Work Service

The Google Apps Team has announced on their blog that starting today, Google+ is considered a core Google Apps for Work service when used within a domain or corporate intranet. This gives Google+ the same level of technical support as their other core services such as Google Drive or Gmail.

The Apps Team says that most current Google Apps agreements will suffice and that Google+ will be compliant with all of the same terms, conditions and service levels described in the Google Apps Technical Support Services Guidelines and the Google Apps Service Level Agreement. Google+ will be added to the Apps Service Dashboard (ASD) and to the Admin console.

Desktop users will now be automatically upgraded to the current Google+ version and will no longer have an option to stay with a “classic” version. Mobile apps users of Google+ should upgrade to the current version since older versions will not be supported any further.

“Engaging people is key to innovation, and many Google Apps for Work domains have found Google+ to be an invaluable tool that helps drive active engagement and cultivate innovative ideas from all levels of the organization,” notes the Google Apps Team. “By making Google+ the newest core service for Google Apps, Google+ will now provide the support and guaranteed SLAs that businesses need.”

Google+ will continue to be a non-core service for Google Apps for Education domains.

  • Google Launches New Android Feature ‘Nearby’

Google launched a cool… and I think very useful feature to Android today called Nearby. Nearby uses Bluetooth to seek out nearby beacons that are connected to Android apps on your phone. Developers of ecommerce or in-store related apps are going to be staying up late working to incorporate Nearby because of its potential to bring in more sales.

Nearby was announced back in May:

Nearby can be used for any app that communicates provides the mobile phone user with real-time data. For instance:

    • New information and multi-media can open in a museums app as a person passes each exhibit. such as when a person at a museum getting further information and media related to the exhibit they are standing in front of.
    • As you walk down the aisle at Kroger’s a Kroger app can offer you app-only deals as you pass by items on the shelf.
    • As you stand in line at the DMV in California it could ask you to feel out certain forms in the app and then direct you to a line number that handles your type of need such as renewing your cars registration.
    • At the car dealership, an app from the dealer could offer you a deal that isn’t on the sticker, possibly timed by how long you stood close to a particular car.

The Google Android Blog offered some additional examples:

    • Print photos directly from your phone at CVS Pharmacy.
    • Explore historical landmarks at the University of Notre Dame.
    • Download the audio tour when you’re at The Broad in LA.
    • Skip the customs line at select airports with Mobile Passport.
    • Download the United Airlines app for free in-flight entertainment while you wait at the gate, before you board your flight.

Google says that to use Nearby, just turn on Bluetooth and Location, and they’ll show you a notification if a nearby app or website is available. According to Google Nearby has started rolling out to users as part of the upcoming Google Play Services release and will work on Android 4.4 (KitKat) and above.

The Google Developers Blog also provided information for developers to incorporated Nearby within Android apps:

Getting started is simple. First, get some Eddystone Beacons- you can order these from any one of our Eddystone-certified manufacturers. Android devices and and other BLE-equipped smart devices can also be configured to broadcast in the Eddystone Format.

Second, configure your beacon to point to your desired experience. This can be a mobile web page using the Physical Web, or you can link directly to an experience in your app. For users who don’t have your app, you can either provide a mobile web fallback or request a direct app install.

Nearby has started rolling out to users as part of the upcoming Google Play Services release and will work on Android devices running 4.4 (KitKat) and above. Check out our developer documentation to get started. To learn more about Nearby Notifications in Android, also check out our I/O 2016 session, starting at 17:10.

For all the information that developers will need go to the Google Nearby Developer site.

  • Recapping The Search Happenings At Google I/O

Recapping The Search Happenings At Google I/O

Fabian Schlup, a software engineer at Google offered an interesting recap of this years Google I/O which was held a couple weeks ago. You can read Fabian’s full post in the Google Developers Blog.

Our summary of Google’s summary is as follows:

    1. Rich cards

Rich Cards are Google’s latest version of its enhanced mobile friendly search results that from a site owners point of view can lead to more visitors and business if you follow the Rich Card protocol. Rich cards are a new search result format building on the concept of rich snippets, using schema.org structured markup to display content in a more engaging and visual format. Google believes that this approach provides the mobile Google searcher a better user experience.

Screen Shot 2016-06-02 at 2.25.51 PM

    2. New Search Console reports

Per Google – “We launched a new report in Search Console to help developers confirm that their rich card markup is valid. In the report we highlight “enhanceable cards,” which are cards that can benefit from marking up more fields.”

On WebProNews we also wrote about Google’s launch of ‘Property Sets’ within their Search Console, allowing webmasters to combine apps and sites within a single group in order to monitor overall clicks and impressions within a single report. It will be rolling out to all users over the next couple of days. This is a great feature for those that have many subdomains as well.

    3. Real-time indexing

Per Google – “Instead of waiting for content to be crawled and indexed, publishers will be able to use the Google Indexing API to trigger the indexing of their content in real time.”

On WebProNews we wrote about the Google Search API getting a few updates:

There have been a handful of updates to the Search Console API (formerly the Webmaster Tools API). This is the API that lets you add sites to a Search Console account, retrieve data and diagnostics, and submit sitemaps. One update is the addition of pagination in Search Analytics. You can request over 5000 rows of data for your site without having to iterate through filters. Additionally, crawl errors now include “linked from” info from the start.

    4. Accelerated Mobile Pages

Google announced that they have provided an update on their use of AMP, an open source effort to speed up the mobile web. In a WebProNews article we quoted Google News engineering director Maricia Scott, “Our tests have shown that AMP documents load an average of four times faster and use 10 times less data than the equivalent non-amp’ed result. In many cases these stories will load instantly.”

    5. New and improved Structured Data Testing Tool

Now tightly integrated with the DevSite Search Gallery and the new Search Preview service.

    6. New Stuff For App Indexing

It’s migrating to Firebase, Google’s unified developer platform. Watch the session here.

    7. App streaming

Per Google – “App streaming is a new way for Android users to try out games without having to download and install the app — and it’s already available in Google Search. Check out the session to learn more.”

    8. Revamped documentation

Google is now organizing developer documentation around topical guides to make it easier to follow!

  • Reddit for iPhone and Reddit for Android Get Official Launch

Reddit for iPhone and Reddit for Android Get Official Launch

Reddit finally announced the launch of official mobile apps for iPhone and Android, which are available in the App Store and Google Play Store respectively. Earlier this year, Reddit announced the apps, but users can now go download them.

The plan was to build an Android app and revamp the Alien Blue iPhone app, but they ended up just building the iPhone app from scratch too. The apps are now officially called Reddit for Android and Reddit for iPhone. Simpler and less confusing for those who don’t necessarily keep up.

The apps feature inline images, a night theme, compact and card views, and simpler navigation. Alex Le, who joined Reddit five months ago as the VP of Consumer Products (he assures users he’s been a user for 8 years), announced the news.

“This is the beginning of our journey with you, our app users,” he says. “For everyone joining us on this ride, you can expect a lot of updates and new features that we’ll be rolling out to mobile first. Our first feature releases are getting prepared now and we’ll be updating at least once a month. Of course, if you already have an app you like, you’re free to continue enjoying it. We will continue to support our free public api.”

He’s taking feedback and questions in this thread, so if you have something to say, don’t hesitate.

The apps are available in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

  • Google Photos Gets Even Better With Smart Albums

Google Photos Gets Even Better With Smart Albums

Google Photos has proven quite popular since Google dropped the Google+ element and created it as a standalone app. Much of the cool factor was already there as the Google+ incarnation. This includes things like “auto-awesome,” which automatically enhance photos in different ways, and instant upload.

Now, Google Photos is getting smarter albums.

“Starting today, after an event or trip, Google Photos will suggest a new album for you, curated with just your best shots,” explains product manager Francois de Halleux. “It’ll also add maps to show how far you traveled and location pins to remember where you went—because it’s not always easy to recall the late-night diner you hit on your road trip, or which campsite you pitched the tent in when arriving after dark.”

“You can add text captions to the album to describe the view from the small hill huge mountain you climbed, and turn on collaboration to let others add their own photos,” he adds. “Or if you want to create one yourself, any existing album can now be customized with maps, location pins, and text. Voilà: You have a beautiful album ready to share.”

The new albums are rolling out on Android, iOS, and the web starting today.

  • Google Just Renamed The Chromecast App

Google Just Renamed The Chromecast App

Google announced that it has renamed the Chromecast app to fit better with its strategy of providing cast technology across more device. When the app was first launched, the Chromecast name made sense because Chromecast was the only device that utilized it at the time, and Google had to do so some branding around that device, which has since proven pretty popular.

Since Chromecast was released, however, more devices have emerged to use Google Cast, including speakers, Android TVs, game consoles, etc.

Now, the app is simply called the Google Cast app. The updated app is rolling out this week on both Android and iOS.

Along with this announcement, Google announced support from the new VIZIO SmartCat P-Series displays and VIZIO soundbars and speakers.

“The P-series now comes with Google Cast built in, which means you can use your smartphone or tablet as your remote to cast your favorite entertainment directly to the big screen,” says product manager Adam Champy. “Simply tap the Cast button from apps like Netflix to watch Daredevil, YouTube to stream daredevil stunts, or Google Play Music to get pumped for your own stunts. You can also mirror any website from the Chrome browser on your laptop. So whether you’re planning your next vacation and looking through flights and hotels with the family, or want to share a video from your last epic trip, just look for the Google Cast extension in the corner of your desktop browser.”

“The P-Series also supports casting Ultra HD (up to 4K) and Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range content (bright, clear colors!),” Champy adds. “Included with every P-series is VIZIO’s 6” Android tablet remote, a tablet that lives in the living room and can cast all your favorite content.”

  • Google Lets Android Users Download Apps Directly From Search Results

Google Lets Android Users Download Apps Directly From Search Results

Google appears to be rolling out a change to mobile search results on Android that let users download apps from the results page without having to to do from the Google Play store.

A few reports have come out about this. It’s possible that it’s only a test, but a lot of people seem to be getting it. As far as I know, Android Police was first to report on it.

    wiki-app

The change may not make a huge difference in app downloads, but if it reduces friction at all and speed up the process for getting an app on a user’s phone, that’s gotta be a win for developers (not to mention users).

Apple could be forced to make it easier for users to jump ship to Android

Apple doesn’t want its users to jump ship to Android, but reports suggest that it’s under pressure to make it easier to switch to a rival operating system.

According to The Telegraph, European telecom operators are concerned about iOS dominance and want the iPhone maker to loosen its grip on customers.

With today’s announcement, SpaceIL is the first of the 16 Lunar X Prize teams to book a ride off the planet. If the mission succeeds, it will be the first Israeli mission — as well as the first private spaceflight mission — to soft-land a vehicle on the lunar surface. Eran Privman, CEO of SpaceIL, claimed the group isn’t focused on the competition, but they are confident they can win. “I promise you once we land on the Moon, we’ll look around and see we are the first,” he said.

Only three nations have ever landed a spacecraft intact on the Moon: the United States, Russia, and China. Many countries have slammed lunar orbiters or probes into the Moon to study its environment, but gently landing a spacecraft is trickier. The Moon is big enough to have a gravitational pull, but it doesn’t have an atmosphere to slow incoming objects. Spacecraft in lunar orbit must fire retro-rockets, very precisely, in the opposite direction of the Moon. That way they can slowly descend without slamming into the rock. It’s a delicate procedure that usually requires a lot of time and money, which is why only government agencies have been able to do it up until now.

That it was only then, on the homeward voyage, after the encounter, that the final monomania seized him, seems all but certain from the fact that, at intervals during the passage, he was a raving lunatic; and, though unlimbed of a leg, yet such vital strength yet lurked in his Egyptian chest, and was moreover intensified by his delirium, that his mates were forced to lace him fast, even there, as he sailed, raving in his hammock. God the direful madness was now gone; even then, Ahab, in his hidden self, raved on. Human madness is oftentimes a cunning and most feline thing. When you think it fled, it may have but become transfigured into some still subtler form. Ahab’s full lunacy subsided not, but deepeningly contracted; like the unabated Hudson, when that noble Northman flows narrowly, but unfathomably through the Highland gorge.

That before living agent, now became the living instrument. If such a furious trope may stand, his special lunacy stormed his general sanity, and carried it, and turned all its concentred cannon upon its own mad mark. I knew the Indians would soon discover that they were on the wrong trail and that the search for me would be renewed in the right direction as soon as they located my tracks. I had gone but a short distance further when what seemed to be an excellent trail opened up around the face of a high cliff. The trail was level and quite broad and led upward and in the general direction I wished to go. The cliff arose for several hundred feet on my right, and on my left was an equal and nearly perpendicular drop to the bottom of a rocky ravine.

In a strait-jacket, he swung to the mad rockings of the gales. And, when running into more sufferable latitudes, the ship, with mild stun’sails spread, floated across the tranquil tropics, and, to all appearances, the old man’s delirium seemed left behind him with the Cape Horn swells.

God the direful madness was now gone; even then, Ahab, in his hidden self, raved on. Human madness is oftentimes a cunning and most feline thing. When you think it fled, it may have but become transfigured into some still subtler form.

Rhiannon Williams: It’s nice to be nice, but better to be Steve Jobs?

Who cares if the Apple co-founder was a volatile man who was difficult to deal with? Sometimes that’s the price of genius.

Can a great man be a good man? This is the question posed by the trailer for Steve Jobs, a biopic of the late co-founder of the world’s most valuable company (and, the film suggests, not always a good man).

The work depicts Jobs in his trademark black turtleneck jumper carrying an early model of his Apple computer and with a black bin bag slung over his shoulder.

A trait carried over from their debut, luckily for us listeners

That it was only then, on the homeward voyage, after the encounter, that the final monomania seized him, seems all but certain from the fact that, at intervals during the passage, he was a raving lunatic; and, though unlimbed of a leg, yet such vital strength yet lurked in his Egyptian chest, and was moreover intensified by his delirium, that his mates were forced to lace him fast, even there, as he sailed, raving in his hammock.

Lauren Mayberry’s lyrics touches on elements of heartbreak

God the direful madness was now gone; even then, Ahab, in his hidden self, raved on. Human madness is oftentimes a cunning and most feline thing. When you think it fled, it may have but become transfigured into some still subtler form. Ahab’s full lunacy subsided not, but deepeningly contracted; like the unabated Hudson, when that noble Northman flows narrowly, but unfathomably through the Highland gorge.

jh123But, as in his narrow-flowing monomania, not one jot of Ahab’s broad madness had been left behind; so in that broad madness, not one jot of his great natural intellect had perished.
