Tim Cook Says New Hire Angela Ahrendts Is ‘Wicked Smart’

Apple announced on Monday evening that it has hired Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts to take on a new position at the company: Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores.

Ahrendts will report directly to CEO Tim Cook, and will oversee the strategic direction and operations of Apple’s retail business, both online and off. She’ll join the company in the spring.

“I am thrilled that Angela will be joining our team,” said Cook. “She shares our values and our focus on innovation, and she places the same strong emphasis as we do on the customer experience. She has shown herself to be an extraordinary leader throughout her career and has a proven track record.”

Cook sent an email to staff about the hire, which 9to5Mac obtained. In that, he said, “She will lead both our retail and online teams. I have wanted one person to lead both of these teams for some time because I believe it will better serve our customers, but I had never met anyone whom I felt confident could lead both until I met Angela. We met for the first time last January, and I knew in that meeting that I wanted her to join Apple. We’ve gotten to know each other over the past several months and I’ve left each conversation even more impressed.”

“She shares our values and our focus on innovation,” he continued. “She places the same strong emphasis as we do on the customer experience. She cares deeply about people and embraces our view that our most important resource and our soul is our people. She believes in enriching the lives of others and she is wicked smart. Angela has shown herself to be an extraordinary leader throughout her career and has a proven track record. She led Burberry through a period of phenomenal growth with a focus on brand, culture, core values and the power of positive energy.”

“I am profoundly honored to join Apple in this newly created position next year, and very much look forward to working with the global teams to further enrich the consumer experience on and offline,” said Ahrendts. “I have always admired the innovation and impact Apple products and services have on people’s lives and hope in some small way I can help contribute to the company’s continued success and leadership in changing the world.”

Ahrendts will spend the time leading up to her Apple role transitioning leadership over at Burberry.

  • Apple Set to Overhaul its Online Store

Apple has started making education consumers aware that it plans to retool and relaunch its online store in the near future, according to AppleInsider. Apple posted a notice at the top of those Apple online stores that cater to kindergarten through 12th grade educational institutions yesterday, in hopes of making shopping a little easier. Consumers are greeted with a message about “the new Apple Store.”

The note reads, “Apple is launching a new online store, which is your tool to shop and place orders with Apple. Proposal creation, order status, and a dramatically simplified user interface will make it easier to do business with Apple — all in a secure and reliable environment.”

At present, it would appear that any coming changes will relate to Apple’s specialty stores, like those designed for schools. Still, the modifications could be indicative that Apple plans to overhaul its entire online storefront. The note also points out that educators should “get ready” for the changes, and that they will be “easy,” adding that “Your current Apple ID and password will continue to work – In the coming weeks, you will receive more information about the store’s features, benefits, and launch date.”

Instead of completely redoing its online store, Apple has made incremental changes over the years, adding new features piece by piece.

  • Cyber Monday, Apple Style: Free Shipping On Everything

Apple is not offering any special deals today, on Cyber Monday – even though it’s one of the biggest shopping days of the year and definitely the biggest online shopping day of the year. Some estimates have suggested that Americans could shell out over $1 billion during today’s shopping holiday.

But they did begin a helpful initiative that should coax hesitant buyers into snatching up smaller items via the online store.

Starting today, Apple is offering free shipping on everything – no matter how inexpensive. Usually, you have to hit $50 before Apple’s free shipping kicks in. This could boost online sales of smaller items like cases, chargers and other accessories.

Although Apple is not participating in the Cyber Monday deals, they did have a sale on Black Friday both online and in-store. That one-day-only sale saw discounts as small at $10 to discounts totaling $100 on larger items like MacBooks. From the initial reports, it looks like that one-day sale was a success. Apple sources have reported that the day was the biggest day in terms of retail sales in company’s history.

It’s a running joke that Apple rarely gives anyone a discount on anything – and there is some merit to it. Their Black Friday deals weren’t as ambitious as some other retailers. And they aren’t participating in any deals today, on the biggest online shopping day of the season.

But free shipping on everything is helpful and it might make it easier for people to order smaller items without feeling like they are wasting money.

The free shipping period ends December 22nd.

  • Black Friday Deals Come To Apple Online Store

UPDATE: Leaked flyers show what the actual discounts will look like.

Apple has officially jumped into the pool of companies that will offers deals this Friday, November 25th – or as shoppers and retailers lovingly call it, Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving is always the biggest shopping day of the year, and now one of the biggest players in the holiday shopping season has joined the fun.

A banner adorning the Online Apple Stores for the U.S., the UK, Australia and more promotes a “special one-day Apple shopping event.” The announcement specifically says “come back to the online store” for the deals, and makes no mention of Apple retail stores – so it looks like this Black Friday sale might be online only. An announcement email has clarified that the sale will also be taking place in the Apple retail stores.

Apparently, the deals will come in the form of discounted iPads, iPods, and Macs.

As MacRumors points out, when Apple holds a sale, it’s usually not as impressive as many other retailers. Last year, Macs were taken down about 100 bucks and iPods and iPads saw small markdowns of anywhere from $10 to $40.

But that doesn’t stop Apple from touting the benefits of purchasing your holiday gifts through the Apple Online Store. Some of those bonuses include free engraving, gift wrapping, and free shipping on items over $50.

Plus, while you wait on the Black Friday sale to commence, Apple offers a holiday gift guide that suggests gifts based on the type of person you’re shopping for.

Recent reports have suggested that this could be the season of the tablet, with iPads leading the way. The Apple tablet is the most wanted device for kids aged 6-12 this holiday season.
