  • iPhone 5 Does Indeed Get Smaller Dock Connector, And It’s Called “Lightning”

There were rumors that Apple would release the iPhone 5 with a smaller dock connector, and the company has proven the rumors to be true, with an 80% smaller one.

Full rundown of new iPhone 5 features here.

It’s called “Lighting,” and it’s reversible.

“A lot has changed, and it’s time for the connector to evolve. Our new connector is called Lightning. So we have Thunderbolt and Lightning,” said Apple’s Peter Schiller, talking about the device. The Thunderbolt has been referred to (by Apple) as the “fastest, most versatile I/O ever.”

“Making iPhone 5 thinner and lighter required a pivotal change: replacing the 30-pin connector with something newer, smaller, and better,” says Apple. “Introducing the Lightning connector. It features an all-digital, eight-signal design that’s significantly more durable than the 30-pin connector. Another brilliant feature of Lightning: It’s reversible. Which means there’s no wrong way to plug in the cable.”

With the rumors of a smaller dock connector, there was concern about accessory compatibility, but Apple also said it has an adapter to convert existing dock connectors.

“Soon many iPhone accessories will be Lightning compatible,” the company says. “But if you have one that depends on the 30-pin connector, you can still connect it to your iPhone 5. Simply use a Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (sold separately).”

  • iPhone 5 Comes With New A6 Chip, Ups CPU Power By 2X

Apple finally unveiled the iPhone 5 today. You can get the full rundown here.

In addition to a better camera, better battery life, better Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity, the device comes with a new A6 processor, which Apple says increases the CPU power by 2X. The graphics are also twice as fast, Apple says (compared to the A5).

“With the new A6 chip, just about everything you do on iPhone 5 is noticeably faster — up to twice as fast compared with the A5 chip. So apps launch, web pages load, and email attachments appear almost instantly,” says Apple. “The A6 chip also offers graphics performance that’s up to twice as fast as the A5. So you can power through graphics-intensive apps and games. And enjoy higher frame rates for smoother, more realistic gameplay.”

“Not only is the A6 chip custom designed to be fast, it’s custom designed to work with iOS 6 to be extremely power efficient,” the company says. “So even at its accelerated speed, iPhone 5 has more than enough battery power to last throughout the day — up to 8 hours of browsing on a cellular connection, up to 8 hours of talk time, and up to 10 hours of video playback time.”

Here’s a slide the company showed indicating various speed increases (image credit: The Verge):

The chip is 22% smaller than the A5.

The device will release on September 21. Pre-orders start Friday.

  • iPhone 5 Brings “Console Quality” Games To Mobile

The largest talking point among smartphone manufacturers is getting a phone to display console quality graphics. The iPhone and Android phones have proven to be great with 2D games, but not so much when it comes to 3D gaming. The results so far, barring titles like Infinity Blade, have proven to be Dreamcast level at best. Apple hopes to change that with the iPhone 5.

During the Apple event today, the company showed off the A6 chip. The little guy is going to be powering everything that the iPhone does with performance that’s clocked as two times faster in CPU and graphics than its predecessor. They say that everything from apps to games will see “two times performance across the board.”

To show their dedication to making console quality games, Apple invited Rob Murray, Executive Producer at EA Studios, to show off what the A6 chip is capable of. The game in question is called Real Racing 3 and Murray says that it has “full console quality graphics.” The game is also the first mobile racing game that has rear view mirrors and full shader support.

The true test of the new chip will be whenever Epic Studios gets a hold of it. They’ve already proven that the iPhone is a beast when it comes to building games with Unreal Engine 3. The new A6 chip will truly be put through its paces when a new Infinity Blade game is announced for the handset.

Regardless, Apple is pushing the mobile gaming scene pretty hard. Its closest competitor will be Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chip. The limited availability of Tegra 3 in mobile devices means that Apple will still have the better looking games. Nvidia needs to push handset manufacturers to start adopting the Tegra 3 if they want to take on Apple at their own game.

  • iPhone 5 Camera Improves on iPhone 4S

iPhone 5 Camera Improves on iPhone 4S

At today’s Apple event, the company just unveiled the all new iPhone 5. Like many predicted, it sports a 4-inch 16:9 screen, 4G LTE, and a faster A6 processor.

The iPhone 5 is also much thinner and lighter – coming in at 7.6mm thick and 112 grams. That’s 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S.

And to Apple fans’ delight, the camera has also received some improvements.

The 8 megapixel camera now features backside illumination, a hybrid IR filter, a five-element lens, and f/2.4 aperture. More features include spatial noise reduction, a dynamic low-light mode, and faster photo capture.

“The ocean looks bluer, kids look happier, and the world is a more beautiful place,” said Apple Marketing VP Phil Schiller.

Apple also unveiled Panorama mode, which allows users to take large horizontal panoramic images with their camera. According to Schiller, these wide images can clock in at up to 28 megapixels (and maybe more).

Video has also received an upgrade. The FaceTime camera is now HD (720p), and the rear camera offers 1080p HD with improved video stabilization.

You can now take still photos while recording video as well.

More details on the device are emerging. You can check out more features of the iPhone 5 here and full Apple event coverage here.

  • iPhone 5 Features LTE, Upgraded Wi-Fi

Apple finally revealed the iPhone 5 today. In addition to battery life improvements, camera improvements, and a thinner, lighter body, the device comes with LTE connectivity, as rumors have suggested.

    There is also new Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n, 802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz, Up to 150 Mbps).

It comes with “Ultrafast Wireless,” as Apple puts it. Here’s what Apple says in the release:

iPhone 5 supports ultrafast wireless standards including LTE and DC-HSDPA, so you can browse, download and stream content even faster. To support the latest LTE technology, Apple has pioneered a unique single-radio LTE solution that provides blazing fast speeds while fitting perfectly into the new remarkably thin design. iPhone 5 features dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support for a wireless experience up to 150 Mbps.

Apple is careful to note in the fine print that this is based on “theoretical speeds,” and that “actual speeds may vary.”

“There’s now a single chip for voice and data, and a single radio chip. And we have a unique Apple advantage with a dynamic antenna,” said Apple’s Phil Schiller, showing off the device.

It’s going to be available from a whole lot of carriers around the world. In the US, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon will all support 4G.

In Canada, it will be Rogers,Telus and Bell. In Europe, EE and Deutsch Telekom will support LTE, and in Asia, it will be KDDI, Softbank, KT, SK Telecom and SmartTone.

“You rely on your iPhone,” says Apple. “So a thin, light design and outstanding battery life are important to you. But so is a fast data connection. LTE wireless technology is built for speed, but adding it to a phone can create bulk and drain battery life quickly. iPhone 5 does LTE the right way — optimized for better battery life and designed for ultrafast connectivity in a thin profile. The very things you want most from your smartphone.”

“iPhone 5 supports more networks all over the world,” the company says. “That includes advanced networks such as HSPA, HSPA+, and DC-HSDPA. Browse, download, and stream content at ultrafast speeds. Dual-band 802.11n wireless connectivity accelerates your Wi-Fi experience, too — up to 150 Mbps.”

More details of the device here.

  • Apple Event: iPhone 5’s Larger Screen Won’t Give Developers Any Trouble

Apple confirmed today that the iPhone 5 does indeed have a larger screen. The 1136×640 display means that developers will have to update their apps to fill in the rest of the screen. According to Apple, it’s not going to be a big deal.

Apple said that some developers have had early access to the iPhone 5 and found that developing for it was a breeze. One of the apps shown off was buit by CNN. They used the increased real estate to show more text. It’s expected among Android users who have been using larger displays for a while now, but it’s a big boost for iPhone owners who have always wanted a larger screen.

Of course, some developers can’t just change their app in a matter of days before the launch of the iPhone 5. Some developers have other jobs that might hinder them from being able to fix up the app before the launch. What about them? Apple says that older apps will run in letterbox mode until they are fixed up. It’s a nice solution to preserve aspect the native aspect ratio of older iPhone apps.

Expect developers to jump on the iPhone 5’s larger screen just as fast as they did the new iPad’s retina display. Consumers are going to expect a native experience out of the box. Developers would be wise to get their apps up and ready for the increased resolution as soon as possible.

  • Apple Event: Twitter Reacts To Announcements

With Apple’s announcements today about the specs of the new iPhone 5 comes a slew of tweets, not only about the device but about everything from Apple fans to the “old” iPhone.

Many sites are live-blogging the announcements as they come, and Twitter is positively blowing up right now with posts about Apple and all the exciting deets concerning the much-anticipated, highly-speculated upon device.

  • Apple Event: Mountain Lion Has Been Downloaded 7 Million Times

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, took the stage today at Apple’s big iPhone 5 event to give us the details on all things Apple coming soon. Cook is warming up the audience with stats on their other hardware before getting to the iPhone 5, but it’s still impressive stuff.

Cook announced that Mountain Lion has been downloaded more than 7 million times since its launch in July. The operating system had been downloaded more than 3 million times in just four days after its launch. Cook didn’t account for the number of copies sold through retail, but it’s probably just as impressive.

After dropping some nice Mountain Lion figures, he talked up the newest line of MacBooks that were revealed earlier this year. He said that the MacBook Pro was the best Mac that the company has ever made. With a built-in retina display, it’s hard to argue with that. He also said that the MacBook Pro combined with the MacBook Air ranked number one for the last three months in the U.S. notebook marketshare.

It sounds like Apple has gotten off to a great start this year with their notebooks, but the real treat is soon to come with the reveal of the iPhone 5. Keep watching this space as we’re continuing our coverage of all things Apple at the latest Apple event. The iPhone 5 is sure to show up soon.

  • iPhone 5 Officially Announced at Apple Event

“Today we’re introducing the iPhone 5”

With those words, Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller dropped the bomb everyone was waiting for.

Despite most of the smartphone’s specs having been leaked ahead of time, the iPhone 5 announcement managed to impress the audience of tech journalists in attendance at Apple’s big event today. The phone rose up from the stage and rotated, giving everyone a good view of the device as Schiller called it the most beautiful product Apple has ever made.

The iPhone 5 is made entirely of glass and aluminum. It is the thinnest and lightest phone Apple has ever made, at 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S.

Apple has doubled-down with its retina technology, and the iPhone 5 will have a 326 PPI retina display. The display will also be, as predicted, 4-inches. It has a 1136 x 640 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Schiller commented on why the phone isn’t as large as Android phones are getting, saying that it’s because it should fit in the customer’s hand. Apps that haven’t been updated to take advantage of the phone’s extra length will be displayed in their native size, with black bars on the side of the app.

Schiller also confirmed that the iPhone 5 will have 4G LTE capability. As a result, in the U.S. the iPhone 5 will be coming to AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. As rumored, T-Mobile seems to be left out of the loop.

The iPhone 5 also has upgraded Wi-Fi, allowing for 2.4ghz and 5ghz on 802.11n. It should, Apple announced, give customers speeds of up to 150 Mbps.

The CPU in the iPhone 5 is twice as fast as the one found in the iPhone 4S. Apple claims that while its performance is a huge leap, the new A6 chip is 22% smaller.

Despite the better performance of the new processor, Apple also claims that the battery life of the iPhone 5 will actually be better than that of the iPhone 4S. The claim is that the new smartphone will have up to 8 hours of 3G talk time or LTE browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing or Video, and up to 40 hours of music playback.

The iPhone 5 “iSight” camera, as with all parts of the phone, has also gotten an upgrade. The 8 MP backside camera is 25% smaller than the iPhone 4S camera. Schiller announced that it has better low-light performance and is 40% faster on photo capture. It will be able to capture 1080p video with “improved” video stability and face detection.

The iPhone 5 has three microphones – on the bottom, front, and back of the smartphone. Its speakers are 20% smaller than those found in the iPhone 4S.

The rumors of a new cable have also turned out to be true. Apple calls the new connector “Lightening,” and it features an all-digital, 8-signal design. The cable is also reversible, and Apple claims it is more durable. An adaptor will be available for those who still use the old-style connector.

The iPhone 5 will come in classic iPhone colors: black and white. The smartphone will sell for the same price as the iPhone 4S. Preorders begin on Friday, September 14th.

The iPhone 5 will ship on September 21st.

Those hoping to upgrade from an “ancient” iPhone model or those looking jump into the Apple ecosystem for a low price will be happy to hear that the 8GB iPhone 4 will now be free with a 2-year contract. The iPhone 3Gs, however, will no longer be sold.

  • iPhone 5 Is Coming, Ebay Prepares Themselves

iPhone 5 Is Coming, Ebay Prepares Themselves

For Apple fans, today marks a big moment for the brand: an announcement about the newest version of the iPhone, for starters. While rumors have been flying for months now about a sleek update to the device, Apple has given few hints as to what it will actually debut, and just as importantly, when. That will all change shortly, as the company is set to let their fans in on the latest products and when they can buy them.

Though some product images have been leaked, no one is sure just yet what to expect of the phone. However, eBay and eBayUK are expecting a huge surge in Apple products listed on their sites, and are adjusting their policies in preparation. The U.S. site had this to say:

Listing the latest Apple products as pre-sales
Sellers in full compliance with eBay’s Presale policy will be allowed to list the latest apple products on eBay, 30 days prior to the launch date. Also:
Apple-authorized resellers may list up to 25 items per week.
eBay Top Rated sellers may list up to 4 items per week.
Sellers meeting our minimum performance standards may list 1 item per week.
Only sellers registered in the United States or Canada on eBay.com, eBay Motors, or eBay Canada, will be able to participate in this event.

Listing the latest Apple products after the launch
Once the latest Apple products are made available to the public, most sellers will be allowed to list them with some limitations:
Apple-authorized resellers may list an unlimited number of items per week.
eBay Top Rated sellers may list up to 8 items per week.
Sellers meeting our minimum performance standards may list 4 items per week.
Sellers who’ve confirmed their personal information may list 1 item per week.
Only sellers registered in the United States or Canada on eBay.com, eBay Motors, or eBay Canada will be able to participate in this event.

Also, sellers who don’t meet the minimum performance standards won’t be allowed to sell Apple products at all. eBay says these precautions are to help sellers and buyers get the most out of their deals, and, presumably, to keep chaos at a minimum.

  • Apple Event: 17m New iPads Sold, 84m Total

Apple Event: 17m New iPads Sold, 84m Total

At their iPhone launch event, Apple just announced that they’ve sold a pretty impressive amount of iPads. According to CEO Tim Cook, Apple has sold 17 million New iPads since its launch in April.

When you throw those sales into the mix, Apple has sold over 84 million iPads since the first generation was launched.

And that impressive total has cut into the worldwide market share. According to Cook, their tablet share increased from 62% to 68% year-over-year.

“To put this in perspective, we sold more iPads than any PC manufacturer sold of their entire lineup,” said Tim Cook.

And iPads account for 91% of all web traffic from tablets. Pretty astonishing.

Of course, the iPad is nothing without its apps. Cook says that there are over 250,000 apps tailored for the iPad, and the average iPad owner uses 100 apps.

When you factor in iPad sales, Apple says they have sold over 400 million iOS device. Quite the milestone.

  • Apple Event: Cook Gives Retail Store Numbers

Apple Event: Cook Gives Retail Store Numbers

Apple kicked off its big press event today by showing an inspirational video about its Apple Stores. CEO Tim Cook then announced that Apple has 380 stores in 12 countries, and that number 13 is coming on Friday with the opening of its fist Swedish store.

“Our stores offer the best buying experience and the best customer service on the planet.”

According to Cook, Apple stores had 83 million visitors in the last quarter (April – June), adding that it’s “Amazing”.

You can see the complete list of stores here.

More coverage of the event, where the iPhone 5 (among other things) is expected to be released, to come.

  • iPhone 5 Launch Date: Apple Confirms September 12 iPhone Event

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. Apple has started to send out invites for their big iPhone 5 event on September 12. How do we know it’s about the iPhone 5? Just take a look at the invite.

Apple Confirms iPhone 5 Event September 12

As you can plainly see, the 12’s shadow makes a 5. That all but confirms the iPhone 5’s presence at the event. Of course, there are still rumors that Apple will just call it the “new iPhone.” It makes sense as Apple has been moving away from adding numbers to their product names.

What can you expect from the iPhone 5 come September 12? All the rumors so far point to the device having a larger screen, a nano-SIM card, LTE connectivity, thinner battery and a smaller dock connector.

Even with all the leaks, I’m sure Apple has a few surprises left up their digital sleeves. It wouldn’t be an Apple product reveal if they didn’t have at least one thing that legitimately surprises us. My bet is on something involving iOS 6. There might even be more information regarding Passbook and the device’s rumored NFC chips.

Like the invitation says, the event will be taking a week from now on September 12 at 10 a.m. PDT. We’ll be bringing you all the big announcements from the conference on that day.

  • Apple iPad Event Creates Twitter War Over Xbox 360 And PS3

During the iPad event today, Epic Games’ Mike Capps said that the new iPad had more memory and a higher resolution than the Xbox 360 or the PS3. The statement was meant to hype up the new iPad as being a great platform for gaming. Too bad the Twitterverse forgot where the quote came from.

Of all the things to start trending on Twitter, “Xbox 360 or the PS3” just had to be it. As expected, the conversation wasn’t about the validity of Capps statement or the new iPad. It quickly turned into a fanboy war where Xbots and the PlayStation Nation fired back and forth over which console was better.

The ensuing tweets are pretty funny and provide a good console fanboy flame war the likes of which hasn’t been seen in a while. Here’s a few of our favorites:

New iPad And GDC 2012 Collide In San Francisco

For the second year in a row, Apple has held their iPad reveal event in San Francisco across the street from the Game Developers Conference. As Apple becomes more invested in gaming on their devices, it was only a matter of time before the two events merged – if only on Twitter.

Apple used their new iPad press event today to talk a little bit about gaming on the third generation iPad. Namco and Epic Games both showed off new experiences on the new iPad in the form of an Ace Combat-like game and Infinity Blade Dungeons respectively.

Of course, Apple used this event to also take a stab at the gaming industry perhaps knowingly of GDC happening right across the street. The company said that iPad users used the iPad to play games more than they used game consoles or dedicated gaming handhelds.

During the Epic Games presentation, Mike Capps said that the new iPad had more memory and a higher resolution than either the PS3 and Xbox 360. While I would love to point out there’s more to visual fidelity than just memory and resolution, let the developers at GDC speak for themselves about the new iPad and the Apple event in general.

Today, at a media event in San Francisco, Apple unveiled their next-gen iPad to the world. The iPad sports many of the rumored features like a high-def Retina display, new cameras, and an A5X quad-core processor. It even surprised some by launching with 4G LTE functionality.

And like we speculated earlier this week, it will hit the shelves on March 16th. Pre-orders, however, begin today.

Like the iPad 2, the new iPad is going to start at $499. That will be the price for the 16 GB non-4G model. Here’s the full pricing structure: $499, $599, and $699 for 16, 32, and 64GB, respectively. If you want 4G, it’ll cost you $629, $729, and $829, respectively.

“We have redefined once again the category that Apple created just two years ago with the original iPad,” said Tim Cook. “It’s the privilege of a lifetime for me to work with the most innovative people on Earth. Only Apple can deliver this kind of innovation in such a beautiful, integrated, and easy to use way. It’s what we love to do, it’s what we stand for.”

So Tim Cook said a lot about the new iPad today. One thing he didn’t say was anything about an iPad 3 or an iPad HD. After everyone referred to the device as the iPad 3 for a while, reports emerged that it was going to be called the iPad HD. Fooled us, Apple!

The next gen iPad is called the iPad. But it’s the new iPad.

This sort of reaction shouldn’t surprise you:

New iPad: Twitter Reactions To Apple’s Announcement

In the absence of a live-stream feed of Apple’s big announcement today, many people resorted to sites live-blogging the event or Tweeting reactions and updates. In fact, shortly after Tim Cook said that the iPad is the “poster child of the post-PC world,” the term “post-PC” instantly became one of the top trending topics on Twitter.

More, as the presentation led into the new iPad, “Apple TV,” “keynote,” “iOS 5.1,” “Post-PC,” “Retina Display” (probably the first and last time that phrase will trend), “A5X,” “Voice Dictation,” “No Siri,” “Infinity Blade,” “Epic Games,” “Xbox 360 or the PS3,” “#iPad3,” “iPhoto,” “iMovie,” and “Tim Cook” all were phrases used at the conferences and all became top trending topics worldwide on Twitter. With how every single feature became a new trending topic on Twitter, Tim Cook or Mike Capps could probably have repeated “pancake meth cars” and it’d be a trending topic.

What’s more intriguing is how you can almost watch the color of the public’s mood ring change by the end of the announcement. In the beginning, the live-tweets coming from the event were much more excited than the end, where the tweets took on an impatient and sardonic tone. The general consensus also seemed to reflect frustration for the fact that Apple dragged out the presentation without actually sharing the name of the new tablet.

Below is a sample of what some people were saying as the Apple event unfolded.

  • Apple iPad Event: Infinity Blade Dungeons, Other Games Announced

During the Apple iPad event, the company took some time out to go over their dedication to gaming on the platform. They said that when iPad users claimed to spend more time gaming on the iPad over their consoles or handheld platforms.

To show their dedication to the platform, three game/app announcements were made today that should stoke the fires of the casual and hardcore gamer.

First up was Namco, they showed off a aerial combat game that might as well be a new Ace Combat game. They said it had console quality visuals with the new retina display helping out a lot.

    Apple iPad Event Games

The second app shown off wasn’t really a game, but more of a drawing tool. Autodesk showed off Sketchbook for the iPad that promises resolution independent image manipulation and drawing.

Up next was Epic Games who announced the third game in the popular Infinity Blade franchise – Infinity Blade: Dungeons. Epic said that it will feature HDR graphics with great lighting. To keep the “new iPad is better than everything else” rhetoric going, Epic said that the new iPad has more memory and screen resolution than either the Xbox 360 or PS3.

  • Apple Launches New iPad: 4G, Retina Display, A5X Chip and Available March 16th

Apple Launches New iPad: 4G, Retina Display, A5X Chip and Available March 16th

Apple CEO Tim Cook began today’s event by talking about a “Post PC” world. Apple has its stake in three of these types of devices – the iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod. And those post PC devices make up for 76% of Apple’s revenue, as they sold 62 million of them last quarter.

Last quarter, Apple sold 15.4 million iPads alone, which is more than any PC company sold of their PCs (more proof of that post PC world Cook’s been hammering). Cook went on to talk about how the iPad has become everyone’s favorite device for books, email, and even gaming.

And now comes the new iPad. It will hit the shelves on March 16th, and pre-orders start today.

First off, it is sporting that high-def retina display that we thought it would: 2048 x 1536 resolution. “Text sharper than a newspaper. Photos will look incredible. Fonts look amazing, it’s a huge step forward. Put another way, you all have an HDTV at home , 1080p — an iPad has more pixels. That’s incredible,” said Cook.

As far as the processor goes, Apple went with the A5X chip. What’s the “x?” Quad-core, baby. So Apple has built a high-def retina display with a chip with twice the graphic power of what’s in the iPhone 4S.

The new iPad also sports new cameras – the rear being called the “iSight.” It’s 5 megapixels and has autofocus, autoexposure, as well as face detection. And it supports HD video recording at 1080p resolution with built-in video stabilization.

One of the biggest things about the new iPad is that it’s got 4G LTE. There was a lot of speculation prior to today on whether Apple would launch the new iPad with this capability, and they have (to the joy of heavy data users everywhere). The LTE networks can accomodate 72Mbps. Apple claims that your battery life won’t be be negatively affected by all this – keeping 9 hours on 4G. It’s a little thicker than the iPad 2, as was expected (9.4 mm to 8.6 mm).

    Here’s the pricing structure: $499, $599, and $699 for 16, 32, and 64GB, respectively. If you want 4G, it’ll cost you $629, $729, and $829, respectively.
