  • iPad Mini Gets Its Own Smart Cover

iPad Mini Gets Its Own Smart Cover

Today, Apple unveiled the all new iPad mini, their highly-anticipated and widely-expected new tablet. The iPad mini is the smaller cousin of the new iPad 2 boasting a 7.9-inch display with a 1024×768 resolution. It’s shocingly thin, and only 7.2 mm and weighs only 0.68 lbs.

Of course, Apple thinks that if you’re going to get the tablet, you should probably get the case that was designed for it.

With that, Apple unveiled a new Smart Cover for the iPad mini at their event. It’s almost exactly the same as the bigger Smart Cover, but sized to fit the smaller tablet.

“The cover that wakes up, stands up, and brightens up iPad has been redesigned for iPad mini.11 And what a smart pair they are. iPad mini and the iPad mini Smart Cover, that is. Magnetic technology built into each one really pulls them together. The Smart Cover snaps perfectly into place to protect your screen — without adding bulk. Open the Smart Cover and your iPad mini wakes up. Close it and your iPad mini goes to sleep. Fold the Smart Cover and it becomes a stand. It’s all just so, well, smart,” says Apple.

In a promo video for the new iPad mini, Apple’s Jony Ive also mentioned that the metal hinge has been nixed. meaning that your smart cover now wraps the iPad mini in one single wash of color.

You can preorder the iPad Mini this Friday, October 26th. The first ones (Wi-Fi only) will ship on November 2nd. The online Apple Store doesn’t yet list the new iPad mini smart covers.

  • Apple Announces Fourth Generation iPad and iPad Mini

It was rumored that the iPad Mini would be the major highlight of the Apple event. I don’t think anybody expected them to announce a new iPad, but he we are with the fourth generation iPad with a faster processor and graphics. Oh, and the iPad Mini is real.

Phil Schiller announced a fourth generation iPad only a little over half a year since the launch of the new third generation iPad. Schiller says that the new fourth generation iPad will feature an A6X processor that’s much faster than the previous generation. It will also feature a faster graphics processor than the previous generation for even better games. It will also feature the new lighting connector.

The fourth generation iPad will cost the same as the current third generation iPad. That means the base model will only run you about $499.

The true star of the show, however, is the iPad Mini. Schiller busted out the iPad Mini (that’s the actual name) and confirmed pretty much everything the rumors have suggested thus far. The iPad Mini is only 7.2 mm thin and weighs only 0.68 lbs. The display is 7.9 inches diagonally with a resolution of 1024×768.

The iPad Mini is powered by most of the specs that you’ll find in the iPad 2. It sports an A5 processor and an HD Facetime camera. It also has a 5MP iSight backside camera. The Wi-Fi if faster with b/g/n connectivity and a lighting connector that’s now standard among Apple’s products.

Schiller stressed the point that the iPad Mini is a much better choice than other Android tablets. He used Google’s Nexus 7 as a comparison. The screen size is technically larger than that of the Nexus 7 which means that there’s more screen real estate for Web browsing. All the iPad specific apps on the App Store will run natively on the iPad Mini as well.

The base model iPad Mini will come with 16GB of memory for $329. Pre-orders for the Wi-Fi iPad Mini will start this Friday and begin shipping on November 2. The cellular versions will begin shipping two weeks later.

  • Apple Event: iPad is a Huge Success, iBooks Author Updated

After Phil Schiller announced the new, thinner iMacs Tim Cook once again took the stage at today’s Apple Event. Teasing an audience impatient for the announcement of the iPad Mini, Cook began to talk about the success of Apple’s iPad lineup.

“Two weeks ago, we sold our 100 millionth iPad,” said Cook. He stated that this level of unit sales, in just two years is “unprecedented” for a product in a new category.

Cook stated that more iPads were sold in the June quarter of 2012 than any other PC manufacturer sold of its entire lineup. Also, over 90% of web traffic comes from iPad devices. The new iPad is the fastest-selling iPad and top-selling tablet of all time.

The Apple CEO then stated why the company believes its iPad devices are so successful: “People love their iPads.” No kidding. Luckily, Cook expounded upon that statement, saying the iPad’s display, responsiveness, front and rear cameras, connectivity, and “legendary all-day battery life” are factors in that love.

Cook went on to point out that the iPad has been embraced in both the education and business realms. He stated that textbooks on the iPad are now available for 80% of u.s. high school core curriculum. Also, iPads are now available in 2500 schools across the U.S., though in what capacity they were available wasn’t adressed. With respect to business, Cook stated that 94% of fortune 500 companies are now “testing or deploying an iPad.”

Cook then announced that iBooks Author has gotten an update. The new iBooks Author will enable embedded fonts, as well as mathematical expressions that can be inserted directly into books. Multi-touch widgets are also now available, and Cook stated that “publishers can now easily update their books.” It was stated that Apple is trying to re-invent the textbook with multimedia and interactive options.

The new iBooks Author will be available today, for free, in the Mac App Store.

  • Apple Unveils New Super-Thin iMacs

    Apple Unveils New Super-Thin iMacs

Apple’s Phil Schiller showed off a new iMac today at Apple’s big event. According to him, it’s the most beautiful Mac Apple has ever made.

As you may have guessed, it’s really thin. “It’s absoultely beautiful,” he said.

Actually, its 5mm thin – 80% thinner than the previous generation.

“There’s an entire computer in here,” said Schiller. “Hard to believe there’s a display in here.”

It has edge to edge glass, and uses up to 50% less power when sitting idle.

The enclosure is made of a chin and an aluminum back, put together with advanced laser welding (friction stir welding, which involves molecules of aluminum being merged together to make on piece). The display is laminated directly to the glass. The entire display is 45% thinner. Apple has removed the optical drive and completely re-engineered optical components.

    New iMac

    It comes in two display sizes: 27-inch (2560 X 1440) and 21.5-inch (1920 x 1080).

The new iMacs make use of Intel’s Ivy Bridge Core i5 and Core i7 processors, as well as FaceTime cameras, dual microphones, NVIDIA’s GeForce 600-era graphics, up to 32GB of RAM, and multiple storage options (hard drive or flash.

Apple revealed Fusion Drive, which includes 128 GB flash storage, 1 TB or 3TB HDD, fused together in a single volume, with faster reads and writes. “You order it and get a single drive,” said Schiller.

The whole thing, of course, comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse.

The 21.5 inch model starts at $1299 (2.7 GHz quad-core, i5 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 640M, 1TB HDD). It ships in November. The 27-inch model (2.9 GHz quad-core i5, 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 660M, 1TB HDD) starts at $1799, and ships in December.

  • New Mac Mini Announced at Apple Event

Today, at Apple’s big media event, “mini” is the word. But before we get to the expected iPad Mini, Phil Schiller took to the stage to unveil the all new Mac mini.

The Mac mini presentation didn’t last very long, as Schiller seemed anxious to get to the next product, the all new iMacs. But he did take time to announce two new models, both of which are available to ship today.

The most inexpensive model is priced at $599 and includes a 2.5Ghz dual-core i5 processor with 4Gb of Ram and a 500Gb hard drive. The other model runs $999, and it ships with a 2.3Ghz quad-core processor and dual 1TB hard drives. Schiller styled it as the “server” model, as that software comes pre-loaded on the device.

This is the first update to the Mac mini since mid-2011.

  • Apple Announces 13-Inch MacBook Pro With Retina Display

The iPad Mini is the most anticipated product from today’s Apple event, but the company has other products on tap for today as well. One of the rumored products was an update to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with a retina display. That rumor and then some turned out to be correct.

Phil Schiller began the presentation by citing some interesting statistics. The company claims that their Mac line has surpassed PC shipments. Year-over-year growth in Macs is at 15 percent whereas PC shipments are at two percent. They also claimed that the Mac – in both desktop and laptop configurations – are number one in their respective fields.

To stay on top, Schiller announced a new MacBook Pro to round out their product line. When the MacBook Pros got retina displays earlier this year, the 13-inch was noticeably absent from the upgrade list. The 13-inch MacBook Pro now has a retina display with a 2560×1600 resolution. The new MacBook Pro is also thinner and lighter than the previous generation at only 0.75-inch and 3.57 lbs.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro costs $1,699. It comes equipped with a 2.5 GHz i5 Processor, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash memory. It ships out today.

There are sure to be more announcements of new Macs and even an iPad Mini today. Be sure to check out all of our coverage for more info.

  • Apple Event: New iBooks App Announced

Today’s Apple event has begun, and already some unexpected announcements are coming.

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage this morning and updated the tech press on all of the newest, impressive Apple and App Store statistics. That led into the announcement of a new version of iBooks

According to Cook, the new iBooks features continuous scrolling and improved integration with iOS 6.

“It’s also better integrated with iCloud,” said Cook. He pointed out that iOS users can leave off reading on one device and pick up reading on another with better accuracy.

Unsurprisingly, iBooks now has the capability to share users’ reading experiences through Facebook and Twitter

The new iBooks also now supportins over 40 languages, including Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. The page turning for these languages will turn in the direction expected in those cultures.

The updated iBooks app will be available today, and customers can download it through the iTunes App Store.

  • 200 Million People Are Using iOS 6 (And Other Apple Stats Announced)

At its big event today, Apple revealed a bunch of stats about its products, as usual. In addition to the 5 million iPhone 5s sold in the first weekend of availability, CEO Tim Cook revealed that the company has so far sold over 3 million of the new iPods it revealed at the same time.

Cook says there are currently 200 million devices running iOS 6 after just a month of availability. As a result, there are 125 million documents in the cloud, there have been 300 billion iMessages sent, with 28,000 being sent per second.

There are currently 160 million Game Center players, and over 70 million photos have been shared with the Photo Streams feature in iOS 6.

There are 700,000 apps in the App Store, including 275,000 iPad apps (as in specifically designed for the iPad, and not just stretched out smartphone apps, as Cook pointed out).

Users have downloaded 35 billion apps in from the store. “This is jaw dropping,” said Cook. $6,500,000,000 has been paid to developers, the Cook said.

    Paid To Developers

Finally, there are a million and a half books in the book store, and customers have downloaded 400 million of them.

More from the event to come.

  • Where to Watch Apple’s iPad Mini Event

Where to Watch Apple’s iPad Mini Event

Apple is notorious for refusing to live stream their various press events online, but today they are making an exception. Or possibly creating a new rule. Yeah, let’s go with that one.

If you want to watch today’s event live, you can do it on Apple’s website.

On the Apple Events page, the company currently lists a “Special Event” for today at 10 am PT. You can access it here. One note of warning, however: Apple is keeping it in the family by only allowing users with Apple products to live stream the event from their website.

That’s right – in order to stream the event today, you must be running Mac OS X v 10.6 or later and Safari 4 or later.

Apple is also allowing mobile streaming on iOS, if you’re running Safari on iOS 4.2 or later. Just open up this link on your iOS device to access the live stream (h/t BGR)

Apple is also giving people another way to watch the event: Apple TV. As long as you have the second or third generation Apple TV with software 5.0.2 or later, you should be able to stream the event later today.

It’s widely accepted that Apple will unveil the iPad Mini at today’s event, the 7-inch version of their popular iPad tablet. Other possible launches include a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and new Mac Mini, and iTunes 11. We also think that the event will probably focus on education.

  • iPad Mini Event To Be Held On October 23

We know almost everything there is to know about the iPad Mini. We’ve seen its design, we know that it’s coming in 12 models, and that it will launch at some point in late October or early November. Now we just need an actual date for the announcement and we’ll be set.

Well, we can finally mark that last one off the list as Apple sent out the invites for the big Apple event today. The multi-colored invitation only says, “We’ve got a little more to show you.” It’s obvious that the “little more” is the iPad Mini.

    iPad Mini Invite October 23

Either way, the iPad Mini is going to finally be unveiled at this event. Expect to hear every little detail about Apple’s entry into the 7-inch tablet market. We’ll also find out when we can expect to see the device on store shelves. I’m personally betting on a late October release, but an early November release is just as feasible.

It should be noted that this is Apple’s last big event for the year. The company’s shares are already riding high on the iPhone 5’s impressive performance, but they could take it even further with a great showing for the iPad Mini. A number of consumers are apparently not that excited about the device, but a great show with a lot of hype could turn that around.

Aside from the iPad Mini, Apple is expected to show off a new 13-inch retina MacBook Pro. The company will probably make some other announcements at the event, but what those other announcements are remains a mystery.

On a final note, we’ll be bringing you all the news from the October 23 event. In the meantime, you can check out all of our previous iPad Mini coverage to get an idea of what to expect come next Tuesday.

  • Here’s Where You Can Watch The iPhone 5 Event

Apple, as usual, did not stream its big iPhone 5 event live on Wednesday. However, the company has put up video on its site where you can watch it, in case reading about it wasn’t enough.

Just go here if you want to watch the “magic”.

Of course the lengthy event was about more than just the iPhone 5. The company talked about Apple Stores, Mountain Lion, iOS 6, the new iPod Touch and iPod Mini, and the new iTunes. Plus, there was a performance from the Foo Fighters.

Unfortunately, the hologram Steve Jobs only appeared in this parody version of the event.

If you just want to watch the Foo Fighters performance, you can find that here.

    More Apple coverage here.

  • Foo Fighters Acoustically Rock the iPhone 5 Event [VIDEO]

In an unexpected turn of events, Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters somehow found themselves performing under a giant Apple logo at yesterday’s big iPhone 5 event.

The band was the closing act, appearing on stage after Tim Cook and Phil Schiller had announced the new iPhone 5, a new iTunes, new iPod touch, and a new iPod Nano. Foo Fighters played a three-track set, including “Times Like These,” “My Hero,” and “Walk.” I’m not sure if we’re supposed to read into those choices or anything, so I won’t.

Anyway, Grohl and company went acoustic for the set and took some time in between songs to talk about the occasion for which they’e playing.

“One of the great things about being here is getting to meet all the people, the incredible people that are shaping our future,” said Grohl between “Times Like These” and “My Hero.”

“Just like when you get to meet someone like Little Richard, Tom Petty, Jimmy Page, you realize these are just people that took it upon themselves to do something different – to change the world and shape our future. but you meet them and they’re flesh and bone. They’re people, and it’s totally inspiring.”

    Check out their performance below:

  • iOS 6: Final Build Released To Developers

If you’re reading this, you know the iPhone 5 was unveiled today. The device will be released on September 21, and then on September 28 in some additional countries.

iOS 6, which will run on the device, as well as on the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, New iPad, iPad 2, and iPod Touch, will be released to users on September 19. It’s been available in beta to developers since June, but now Apple has released the final “Golden Master” build (via The Verge).

Apple announced that the iOS 6 GM seed and Xcode 4.5 GM seed with iOS 6 SDK are now available for iOS Developer Program members in the iOS Dev Center.

“It’s time to take your apps in a whole new direction with iOS 6,” says Apple. “Download the SDK today and explore Maps, Facebook integration, Passbook, Reminders, new features with In-App Purchase and Game Center, new camera APIs, and so much more.”

Now developers can really get their apps ready for Apple’s new users and all of those soon-to-be iPhone 5 owners.

  • iPhone 5 Will Include Apple’s New “EarPods”

Now that the big Apple announcements are out of the way, all of the smaller details announced today about the iPhone 5, iPod Touch, and iTunes can be picked apart until they are so much dust blowing in the wind.

During their presentation, Apple saw fit to brag a bit about their previous designs for earbuds, though everyone knows they were average earbuds, at best. After that, it announced its new earbuds, which are inexplicably named the “EarPods.”

Despite the silliness of the name, Apple claims the accessories are more comfortable than any other earbud headphones. The weird oblong shape of the EarPods are “defined by the geometry of the ear,” Apple says in its product description. The shape of the earbuds is such that the speakers are pointed directly into the ear. Apple claims this uni-directional speaker design minimizes sound loss and maximizes sound output.

The remote is much the same as those on Apple’s previous earbuds. It allows users to control volume, video or music playback, and answer the phone without taking their iOS device out of their pocket. The microphone on the remote allows conversations to take place in a similar manner.

Interestingly enough, not even a tiny detail such as the new earbuds escaped the avalanche of (very accurate, it turns out) rumors that proceeded the release of the iPhone 5. A leak just over one week ago included a YouTube video that shows the EarPods in all their strange glory.

  • iPhone 5 Confirmed To Use Nano-SIM

iPhone 5 Confirmed To Use Nano-SIM

Apple was pretty thorough with their announcement of the iPhone 5 this morning. They confirmed every rumor including the larger screen and LTE connectivity. They did, however, forget to mention a few things like NFC or the rumored nano-SIM. The NFC chip is a no go, but the iPhone 5 is getting the nano-SIM format.

Apple’s iPhone comparison site confirmed that the iPhone 5 will indeed use the new nano-SIM format. The change in size is obviously in response to the iPhone 5 being super slim. The micro-SIM dock wouldn’t fit inside the iPhone 5’s case.

    iPhone 5 Nano-SIM

Unfortunately, the change means that you’ll have to get a new SIM card with the purchase of an iPhone 5. Some iPhone users may have a lot of good memories with their old SIM cards, but you’ll just have to get over it. You have until September 21 to say goodbye to your old SIM card before you get into the unavoidable long lines for the iPhone 5.

The new nano-SIM is just part of the iPhone 5’s revealed specs. Check out our exhaustive coverage of all things iPhone 5 to get all the latest details on Apple’s new device.

  • iPhone 4S Now Only $99, iPhone 4 Now Free

The news everyone was waiting for today was the iPhone 5. And though Apple put on a good show and will no doubt sell millions of iPhone 5’s, not everyone who wants one can afford the high up-front cost of a new iPhone.

Luckily for them, Apple also today announced price drops for both the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4. Customers looking to upgrade from iPhones even older than these models, or customers looking to jump into the Apple ecosystem on a budget, will certainly appreciate the price: free.

The iPhone 4, specifically will soon be free for customers who sign up for a two-year contract with a wireless carrier. The iPhone 4S, which most die-hard Apple fans will still have in their pockets for at least 9 more days, will only cost $99 with a two-year contract. The lower prices are sure to lure in customers looking to get their first smartphone.

One of the side effects of these lower prices is that the iPhone 3GS will no loger be sold. The 3GS is now a big part of Apple’s legacy, and was the pinnacle of the original iPhone design. It was also one of the last smartphones Apple released while still fully on top of the smartphone market in terms of hardware, and has now been relegated to dustbin of history. Apple has made it clear iPhone 3GS owners that they are living in the past, and that their thinner phones are the future.

  • iPhone 5 Release Date Is September 28 For These Countries

Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 today after an eternity of anticipation. Get the details on the device here.

Apple proved many of the rumors true, and among them, the release date of September 21, with pre-orders beginning Friday, September 14. Pricing is as follows: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399 (prices include a two-year contract).

Not everybody will be able to get the device on September 21, however. That’s just the U.S., Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the U.K.

Apple announced that it will be rolling out the device to 22 more countries on September 28, including: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

The iPhone 5 comes in either white & silver or black & slate. It will be available from the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores, and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

iOS 6 will be released on September 19.

  • iOS 6 Release Date Is September 19th

iOS 6 Release Date Is September 19th

Among plenty of other things, Apple announced today that iOS 6 will launch on September 19th, just in time for the September 21st release date of the iPhone 5. More on all of the iPhone 5 details here.

iOS 6 has over 200 new features, compared to iOS 5. You’ve heard about all of this already, but it includes things like new Facebook integration, Passbook, new Apple Maps, etc. See all of our iOS 6 coverage, dating back to its announcement here.

The next version of Apple’s operating system was first unveiled at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Later that month, the company released a second beta version to developers.

They really pushed the Facebook integration at today’s event. The new iTunes for iOS actually comes with a Facebook like button. This also comes out on the 19th.

In addition to the iPhone 5, iOS 6 is coming to the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, New iPad, iPad 2, and iPod Touch (4th and 5th generation).

More from today’s Apple event here.

  • iPhone 5 Event: New iPod Touch Announced

Though the iPhone 5 was certainly the highlight of Apple’s big announcement event today, the company still has a ton of announcements aside from its new flagship smartphone.

For those who don’t need an Apple device that doubles as a cell phone, the new, 5th-generation iPod touch debuted. Apple Vice President of Worldwide iPod, iPhone, and iOS Product Marketing Greg Joswiak took to the stage at Apple’s event today and showed off what he says is the best iPod Apple has ever made.

The portable media player is only 6.1 mm thick, and is the lightest iPod touch ever created. The case is made of anodized aluminum.

Excitingly, the display on the device is the same one that is used in the new iPhone 5. Meaning a 4-inch, 1136 x 640 resolution, 326 PPI retina display. As with the iPhone 5, the battery life of the iPod touch has been increased so that it can now play 40 hours of music without being charged.

The iPod touch will not be getting the iPhone 5’s new A6 processor, but an upgrade to the A5 should keep mobile gamers a part of what Apple seems to be hoping is a burgeoning mobile game industry. Also, the iPod will be getting a 5 MP iSight camera with the same “sapphire crystal” as the iPhone 5.

A new accessory, the “iPod touch loop” will also be available this fall. It’s a plastic bracelet that connects to the iPod touch to keep users from dropping it.

The iPod touch will also come with Apple’s new, bulbous “earPods.” The headphones are designed to be more comfortable in customers’ ears and direct sound straight into ears.

  • Apple Introduces Redesigns For iTunes, iPods

We were informed that updates to iTunes and the iPod line would be coming thanks to a leak. That leak was correct as Apple just announced some changes coming to both products.

Apple’s Eddy Cue took the stage today to share the news that iTunes is now available in 63 countries around the world. They have found, however, that over two-thirds of all purchases come from iOS. In response, they redesigned iTunes from the ground up for iOS. It now has a streamlined look with a Facebook like button integrated into every entry. iOS device owners will be able to get their hands on the new iTunes on September 19, alongside iOS 6.

    Apple New iTunes, iPod

But what about the one-third of consumers who still buy iTunes music from the desktop? Apple has completely redesigned that as well to accomodate the 200 million users who are using iTunes in the cloud. The redesign puts prominence on ease of use with albums now expanding into a full store page into of taking you to a separate page altogether. They also have made it possible for artists to share pictures with fans through iTunes.

Apple Announces New iTunes And iPods

Apple has built a new mini-player for iTunes that unobtrusive and easy to manage. With the click of a button, it’s back to the full screen presence that you know and love.

Apple moved on to the iPod and gave us an update on current sales figures. The company has so far sold over 350 million iPods since the device’s introduction. Today, they’re announcing updates to some of the devices in the line. First up is the iPod Nano. It looks like a tiny iPhone.

    Apple New iTunes, iPod

The iPod Nano will come in seven different colors. Video will be returning to the device with a wide screen display. It features a home button when users can access all the features of the iPod Nano from easy place. Due to requests, Apple has also integrated bluetooth into the iPod Nano.

Moving on, Apple announced the 5th generation iPod Touch. They claim it’s the best iPod Touch ever made. It’s only 6.1mm thin and only weighs 88 grams. It features the same screen size and resolution as the iPhone 5. It’s not using the iPhone 5’s processor, however, as they’re brining the last-gen A5 chip to the iPod Touch.

    Apple New iTunes, iPod

The new iPod Touch has had its battery upgrade as well. It promises 40 hours of continuous music playback. The camera in the iPod Touch is also receiving a substantial upgrade with the iSight Camera. It features a 5MP sensor, backside illumination and a five-element lens. The new camera is complimented by iPhoto now being available for the newest iPod Touch.

Apple announced the iPod Touch Loop. It’s a small bracelet that connects to the iPod Touch so that young children don’t drop the device.

In even bigger news, the iPod Touch now has Siri. It’s only available to the 5th generation iPod Touch but that’s kind of a big deal. It’s the only device aside from the iPhone to feature Siri. The iPad must be pretty sad now.

You’ll be able to get your hands on the new iPod Touch and Nano in October. The Nano will cost $149 and a 32GB iPod Touch 5th Gen will go for $299.

  • New iPod Nano Is Thinner, Sports Bigger Screen and a Home Button

The iPhone 5 isn’t the only news coming out of Apple’s media event today. The company has also redesigned their super-portable music player, the iPod Nano.

First off, it’s thinner. Quite a bit thinner, actually. It’s only 5.4mm thick, which is 38% thinner than the previous generation.

But thinner doesn’t mean smaller, as Apple has put the largest display they’ve ever put on the device. It’s a 2.5-inch screen with multitouch. It even has a home button, which makes it look pretty similar to a very small iPhone.

They’ve also brought back video to the iPod Nano – and it’s widescreen. They’ve included an FM tuner that has live pause as well. Also included: a built in fitness pedometer and bluetooth.

The device will sport the new lightning connector and Apple says that it has the longest battery life of any Nano, ever.

Finally, the new iPod Nano is colorful. It will launch in seven different colors:

    Cost: $149. Available in October.
