  • Apple To Livestream September 9th Event

Last month, we learned that Apple would be hosting an event on September 9th, when they’re expected to unveil its new iPhone model(s) and an “iWatch”.

Apple announced today that it will be providing live video of the event at apple.com/live. There’s a countdown in case you didn’t realize how excited you are. There’s even a link to add the event to your calendar (as if you’d forget).

Also, Apple notes, “Live streaming video requires Safari 5.1.10 or later on OS X v10.6.8 or later; Safari on iOS 6.0 or later. Streaming via Apple TV requires second- or third-generation Apple TV with software 5.0.2 or later.”

The event will be held at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts, as opposed to the Moscone West, where the company usually does its product launches.

  • iPhone 6 Event Reportedly Happening on Sept. 9

It’s the dog days of summer, and like most years, Apple is here to offer a cool oasis to thirsty Applemaniacs.

Recode is reporting that Apple’s next big media event – at which the company is set to reveal the next generation of the iPhone (among other things, maybe) – is scheduled for September 9th. That means you have just over a month to convince yourself of your iPhone 5s’ depressing obsoleteness.

Here are a few things that the iPhone 6 could sport, but have not been confirmed:

    – A blood glucose monitor

    – Swiss army knife-style tweezers

    – Cortana

    – A backdoor NSA app

    – Seven actual dollars hidden somewhere

    – Something called a “flavor saver”

    – The fasterest processor known to man and God

    – Bees?

    All unconfirmed, of course.

In all seriousness, folks expect Apple to reveal a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 with a new A8 processor. Apple may also unveil a much larger iPhone – possibly with a 5.5-inch display. You’ve also likely heard that Apple’s displays could be made of a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Apple may also turn the resolution up to 11, or maybe something like 1704×960.

But why speculate? All will be revealed when the world stops spinning for two hours on September 9th.

  • New iPad Mini With Retina Display Announced at Apple Event

Today’s Apple event was front-loaded with news about the company’s desktop hardware and software, but the presentation did eventually move on to the topic everyone was waiting for: the new iPad models. In addition to the lighter, thinner full-sized iPad Air, Apple also quickly unveiled its incremental improvements for the iPad mini.

The largest improvement to the iPad Mini, as expected, is a new retina display with the larger resolution seen in full-sized iPad models. The tablet’s display remains at 7.9 inches but has a new 2048 x 1536 resolution at 326 ppi.

In addition to the screen improvement, the new iPad Mini has gotten a CPU upgrade to the 64-bit A7 processor, which was announced last month at Apple’s big iPhone 5S Event. Apple also promised the device will have Wi-Fi that two times better with its dual multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMI) antennas.

The new iPad mini will come in a new variety of colors, though not in as many as the iPhone 5C. Silver, white, “space” grey, and black are the choices consumers will have. The new iPad Mini will be available sometime “later in November.” The Wi-Fi version of the tablet will retail for $399, while the wireless-capable version will retail for $529.

As for the original iPad Mini, Apple isn’t retiring it just yet. The old iPad mini has gotten a price drop to just $299, a price that edges Apple’s lowest-priced tablet into the sub-$300 territory currently dominated by Amazon and other Android tablet manufacturers.

  • Apple Updates iWork, Adds Real Time Collaboration

At its big event today, Apple made a number of announcements including upgrades to its Macbook Pro and iPad lines. The company also unveiled an upgrade to iWork, its suite of productivity apps (Pages, Numbers and Keynote).

That’s in addition to an upgrade for its iLife apps.

All apps have been updated to 64-bit, and are integrated with iCloud.

“This is the biggest day for apps in Apple’s history,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “These new versions deliver seamless experiences across devices that you can’t find anywhere else and are packed with great features like iMovie Theater, Drummer and a new unified file format for iWork documents across all your devices.”

iWork has added a new, unified file format, and the iWork for iCloud beta now includes support for real-time collaboration.

“Now you can create your document on iPad, edit it on your Mac and collaborate with friends in iWork for iCloud, even if they’re on a PC,” the company notes. “A brand new UI makes iWork even simpler to use, yet provides all of the powerful tools you need to create amazing documents, spreadsheets and presentations.”

Both iWork and iLife are now free with the purchase of any new Mac or iOS device. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store.

  • Apple Introduces The Thinner, Lighter iPad Air

It was pretty much confirmed earlier this year that Apple would introduce a new iPad at its October event. What we didn’t expect was a new name.

Today, Apple announced its latest iPad – the iPad Air. As the name implies, this latest iPad is thinner and lighter than previous models. It’s 7.5mm thin which Apple claims is 20 percent thinner than previous models. It also weighs 1 pound, which Apple claims is the lightest full sized tablet in the world.

Despite being thinner and lighter, the iPad Air sports the same 9.7-inch retina display as the past models. The display is powered by Apple’s newest A7 chip that powers the iPhone 5S. This gives it twice the CPU and GPU performance of the previous iPad.

The iPad Air sports faster wireless communication with a MIMO Wi-Fi antennae and extended LTE support over more carriers. It also sports dual microphones.

Like the previous iPad, it still sports the same 10 hour battery life.

As for color, the iPad Air comes in silver, white, space grey and black. The 16GB Wi-Fi model will start at $499 and $629 for the LTE model.

Apple will continue to sell the iPad 2 as well at $399.

The iPad Air will ship on November 1 in over 20 countries. This will also be the first time that a new iPad launches in China alongside the other first wave launches.

  • Apple Has Sold 170 Million iPads. Here’s What The Sales Chart Looks Like.

At its event today, Apple announced that it sold its 170 millionth iPad. Here’s a look at the sales growth.

    iPad Sales

CEO Tim Cook ran through some early quotes about the iPad from when it was first announced. One of them called anybody who thought the device was going to be a game-changer a “tool.”

That got some laughter, as you might imagine.

“Now everybody seems to be making the tablet. Even some of the doubters are making them,” said Cook. iPad is used more than any of the rest, he said, “and not just more. A lot more.”

Cook also revealed that there are now 475,000 iPad apps in the app store. That’s iPad-optimized apps alone, not just “stretched out” versions of the smartphone apps, as Cook put it.

“No one else is close to this,” he said.

He then revealed the next generation of iPad, the iPad Air.

  • Apple Event: Updated, Cylindrical Mac Pro Unveiled

Apple Event: Updated, Cylindrical Mac Pro Unveiled

Today’s Apple event was expected to focus on the company’s newest generation of iPad tablets. Apple, however, used much of the event to debut new hardware and software for its desktop and notebook computing lineup. In addition to OS X Mavericks and a new line of Macbooks, Apple today announced what longtime Apple fans have been waiting a long time to hear – a newly designed Mac Pro desktop computer.

The new design of the Mac Pro is an odd-looking cylindrical black shape. Apple stated that the new design is one-eighth of the volume of previous Mac Pro towers.

Inside, Apple is packing in serious computing power for professionals who use Macs. The presentation focused heavily on how the new Mac Pro can output video to up to three 4K displays, including one 4K TV. The company also mentioned that its new computers will be well-equipped for 4K video editing.

The new Mac Pros will have Intel Xeon E5 processors, available in quad-, 6-, 8-, or 12-core iterations. Apple is also offering up to 64GB of 1866MHz DDR3 RAM. The new Mac Pro comes with two AMD FirePro GPUs standard, with up to 12GB of GDDR5 VRAM for them. The computer will not have a hard drive, and instead comes with an SSD drive with up to 1TB of storage.

The lowest-end version of the new Mac Pro starts at $2999. That version comes with a 3.7GHz quad-core Xenon processor, 12GB of RAM, Dual FirePro D300 GPUs (with 2GB of RAM on each), and a 256GB SSD. Obviously, upgrades such as a 12-core processor or more SSD drive space for video editing will quickly drive up the cost of the computer. The new Mac Pro will be out sometime before the end of the year, with Apple’s presentation slide showing a December release date.

  • Apple Unveils New Macbook Pro Models At Event, Lowers Prices

At its long-awaited event (by long, we mean about a month), Apple revealed a couple new Macbook Pro models, including a new 13-inch model and a new 15-inch model.

The 13 inch is lighter than the previous one at 3.46 lbs. and thinner at 0.71 in. Apple describes it as “incredibly fast,” with an Intel Haswell 4th generation dual core chip. It includes Intel Iris graphics, which is 90% faster than than the previous generation.

The machine can get up to 9 hours of battery life.

It comes with PCIe-based flash storage, which is 60% faster, and faster 802.11 ac Wi-Fi. It gets three times the performance as the previous generation, Apple says.

It also includes Thunderbolt 2, which is up to twice as fast, and runs the new Mavericks OS, which the company also discussed today. More on that here.

    Macbook Pro

The previous version of this machine started at $1,499, and the new one starts at $1,299. It starts shipping today.

The 15-inch model includes an Intel Crystal Well chip with Iris Pro graphics, and has models with GeForce GT 750M.

It gets up to 8 hours of battery life.

It also comes with PCIe-based flash, 802.11 ac Wi-Fi, and Thunderbolt 2 storage.

It’s “just better across the entire system,” said Apple’s Phil Schiller.

The previous model started at $2,199. The new one starts at $1,999. It also begins shipping today.

  • Mac OS X Mavericks Introduces Performance Updates, Available Today For Free

At today’s Apple event, the company shared an update on the new Mac OS X Mavericks. The new operating system was first introduced back in June, and Apple has remained largely quiet about it since. Now it’s ready to share more about its latest desktop operating system.

Apple started out with a look at how Mavericks will help Mac users get more out of their hardware. For example, Mavericks will reportedly increase power efficiency by helping your computer get up to an hour more battery life when browsing the Web. A more impressive feature is called “Compressed Memory” which allows Mavericks to fit up to 6GB of active memory into 4GB of RAM.

Unless you have a MacBook or Mac Pro with a discrete graphics chip, you will have an Intel CPU with integrated graphics. Intel’s integrated graphics aren’t that great, but Mavericks allows the OS to get more performance out of it. It does this through a system that will automatically allocate the needed VRAM required for graphic intensive tasks. Mavericks will also utilize OpenCL to increase the graphics speed.

In terms of general software, Mavericks also has a number of new features, including file tags. These tags will allow you to create custom color-coded tags for files. For example, you can mark school project files with tags like “Mars” or “Space” to know which files correlate to which part of the project it belongs to.

Other software improvements and additions include better support for multiple displays, Apple’s infamous Maps app, iBooks including iBooks Textbooks.

On a final note, Apple announced that Mavericks will be a free download for any iMac and MacBook Pro made in 2007 onward. It will also be made available today.

  • Apple Event: The Latest iPhone Numbers

Apple today held its hotly anticipated iPad announcement event. However, before Apple engineers took to the stage to debut the latest hardware and software from the world’s biggest tech company, Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage, as always, to begin the presentation with some statistics highlighting just how successful Apple is.

The first number thrown out was that 9 million iPhones were sold by the end of the devices’ first weekend available. Cook wasn’t clear on exactly which weekend this was, but it does seem obvious that both iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C sales were included in this number.

The next number highlighted by Cook was that 64% of iPhone and iPad users are now using iOS 7. He also claimed that 200 million iOS devices were using the new operating system within five days of its official launch.

“It blows away the other guys,” said Tim Cook, taking a stab at the heavily split Android OS adoption.

Cook went on to dig deep for his next number, using his time to promote the iTunes Radio. He claimed that the service boasts 20 million “listeners” and that over 1 billion song have been played through the service.

iTunes Radio is dwarfed, however, by the continued success of the Apple App Store. Apple’s carefully curated app marketplace now boasts over 1 million apps, and users have made 60 billion “cumulative downloads,” though what that means specifically isn’t clear. What is clear is that money is flowing through the App Store, with Cook claiming that developers have made over $13 billion through the marketplace. This translates into several billion dollars for Apple through its cut of app purchases.

  • It’s Official: Apple’s iPad Event Will Take Place On October 22

It was rumored earlier this month that Apple would be holding this year’s iPad event on October 22. Like most Apple rumors these days, it was right on the money.

TechCrunch reports that Apple began sending out press invites today for an event scheduled for October 22. The invite doesn’t make mention of iPad or any other hardware from Apple as it simply states, “We still have a lot to cover.”

Apple's iPad Event Will Take Place On October 22

Despite the ambiguous invitation, we all have a pretty good idea of what Apple is going to show at its October 22 event. In short, everything it didn’t show at its iPhone event in September. That means we’ll see the new iPad, maybe a new iPad Mini, a new line of MacBook Pros, more information on the Mac Pro and the new Mac OS X Mavericks.

Starting with the new iPad, recent rumors have suggested that Apple won’t be doing anything too drastic with the design this year. The company will simply reduce the size of the side bezels to bring the big iPad’s design in line with the iPad Mini’s. It’s also rumored that the new iPad will sport the new 64-bit processor that was first seen in the iPhone 5S.

As for the iPad Mini, it’s been reported that Apple is pushing for a retina display in the device to match the HD displays found in Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX. Along with the increased resolution, the 7-inch tablet is expected to use a 64-bit processor as well. Another rumor, however, suggests that this iPad Mini will be delayed and Apple will release a minor upgrade this year as it works on improving yields for the retina display iPad.

Beyond the new iPads, we don’t know a lot about Apple’s other plans. We can make some educated guesses though. For instance, it’s pretty much guaranteed that we’ll see some new Haswell-equipped MacBook Pros, and we’re likely to find out a release date for the Mac Pro. We’re also likely to hear when Mac OS X Mavericks will be made available to consumers.

Beyond the above, it’s anybody’s ballgame. Apple could have a surprise for us, but it’s doubtful. Any big product announcement, like the oft-rumored Apple television, would receive its own separate event. On October 22, you should just expect to see updates to all the existing Apple hardware that’s not an iPhone.

  • Apple Smart Watch Skips Today’s Event, Low Yields Rumored

So, Apple’s big fall iPhone event is over. The iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C were everything that the leaks and rumors held they would be. The only surprises of the presentation seemed to be the gaudy iPhone 5C cases and the Elvis Costello set.

Though there were not surprises, the event was also missing a few things fans who kept up with rumors might have been hoping for. The long-rumored Apple HDTV, of course, was absent. New iPad announcements aren’t expected until later on this fall. The rumored Apple smart watch also failed to make an appearance. With Sony now on a new generation of its smart watches, and Samsung now selling the Galaxy Gear (pictured), Apple fans have to be wondering where their wearable Apple tech is.

DigiTimes today reported that Apple’s upcoming “iWatch” is still in development, but that manufacturing issues may have played into its absence today. However, the report cites only “talk in the Taiwan supply chain,” making the rumor even more spurious than the average DigiTimes report. Still, the Taiwanese publication is hearing that yield rates for the device are hanging around the 30-40% range, far below the rates Apple would need for a worldwide launch.

Since the Apple smart watch is was missing at today’s presentation, rumors now put the device’s launch somewhere in late 2014. The latest speculation puts the “iWatch” price at around $150 to $230.

  • The Gold iPhone Is Real, And It’s A 5S, Not A 5C (Here’s What It Looks Like)

We’ve been hearing rumors for quite some time that Apple would launch a gold iPhone to complement its black and white models. Many expected the color to be one of a variety for the cheaper iPhone 5C, but as it turns out, despite a very real variety, the gold color is available for the 5S and not the 5C.

  • iPhone 5S Gets A Faster CPU, Fingerprint Scanner

After a year of leaks and rumors, the iPhone 5S is finally here. Is it everything that we were expecting, or did Apple manage to surprise us?

At today’s Apple event, Phil Schiller announced the iPhone 5S after showing off the cheaper iPhone 5C. Schiller says that the iPhone 5S represents “the most forward thinking phone anyone has ever made.”

Schiller began by showing off the three new colors for the iPhone 5S – Gold, Silver and “space grey.” As expected, the case is made of aluminum.

Next, Schiller announced the chip inside the iPhone 5S – the A7. He revealed that the A7 is the world’s first 64-bit chip for a smartphone. This will lead to enhanced performance in apps and games. In fact, he says that the CPU is 40 times faster and the GPU is 56 times faster.

He says that iOS 7 has been completely reengineered to support 64-bit apps. Developers will be able to easily upgrade their apps to the new 64-bit architecture. It also supports OpenGL|ES version 3.0 which will allow for greater graphical flourishes in games. To showcase that, they brought Epic Games to talk about Infinity Blade III. It will launch alongside the iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 5S is getting another smaller processor called the M7 that will help process motion data. In short, it will keep track of the accelerometer, compass and gyroscope so the main A7 CPU can focus on core processing tasks. The M7 processor uses the new CoreMotion API to detect if the user is sitting, walking, driving, etc.

As for battery life, Schiller says that it can provide 10 hours of 3G talk time, LTE browsing, Wi-Fi browsing and video. For 3G browsing, you’re looking about 8 hours of life.

The camera has received an upgrade with a “five-element Apple-designed lens” that can capture a 15 percent larger active area. Instead of going for more pixels, however, Apple will instead of going for bigger pixels. To that end, the iPhone 5S captures photos in 1.5μ pixels. For panorama shots, it can capture images at 28 MP.

The camera software has also been revamped to automatically apply all the settings needed for the best photo. As for the flash, there’s two – a white and amber flash – to help provide the best lighting. A new burst mode has also been added to take pictures at 10 frames per second.

For those who like to record video, Apple is implementing slow motion software that can capture 720p video at 120FPS. Now you no longer have to buy an expensive camera to record video of your friends smashing watermelons in slow motion.

Next, Schiller moved onto security. He says that most iPhone users don’t bother with setting up a passcode for security so they’re implementing the oft-rumored fingerprint scanner. It’s called Touch ID and it scans sub-epidermal skin layers to make sure that you’re you. It can be used for both logging into your phone as well as making purchases on iTunes.

For those worried about the privacy implications of handing over your fingerprint, Apple says that all scans are encrypted and placed inside a secure enclave. That means that your fingerprint will never be stored on Apple’s servers.

The iPhone 5S starts at $199 for the 16GB variant, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB on a two year contract. The cases will be $39 each and will be available in multiple colors.

You can start pre-ordering the iPhone 5S on September 13. It will be available to purchase on September 20. By the end of the year, it will be available in 100 countries on over 270 carriers.

  • Apple Event: iWork, iMovie, iPhoto To Be Free With New iOS Devices

Apple announced today that its iWork suite of productivity apps will be free with the purchase of new iOS devices. That includes Pages, Numbers and Keynote. iMovie and iPhoto will also be free.

“We think that iWork is a really key advantage for our customers’ productivity, and iPhoto and iMovie are great for their creativity,” said CEO Tim Cook is quoted as saying. “Almost all of our customers want these apps.”

The news came out of Apple’s big event where it unveiled the iPhone 5S and 5C, and announced that iOS will be released on September 18th.

In June, at Apple’s WWDC, the company announced iWork for iCloud, making the iWork suite essentially a direct competitor to Google Docs.

  • iPhone 5C Officially Announced: $99, Launches September 13

For months now, the normal late summer iPhone rumors have been swirling. Rather than just leaks about the newest iPhone, Apple fans have been greeted with rumors about two new iPhones. One is the iPhone 5S, of course, but the other is a less expensive, entry-level handset. Today at Apple’s big fall iPhone event the rumors of the iPhone 5C proved to be true.

Apple’s Phil Schiller took the stage early in the presentation to officially unveil the iPhone 5C. The device is made using mostly the hardware found in the iPhone 5, but now comes in a variety of colors. The device has a single piece of hard-coated polycarbonate plastic that makes up its back and sides. The smartphone will come in bright colors of green, white, blue, pink, or yellow.

Inside the device the plastic cover is lined with a steel frame on the inside that acts as an antenna. The 5C has a 4-inch display, an A6 processor, and an 8MP rear camera – the same as last year’s iPhone 5. What’s new is that the 5C has a slightly larger capacity battery and a slightly better front-facing camera.

The colors are a large selling point for the iPhone 5C, but Apple is giving customers even more choices than just the five colors the device comes in. Apple will be selling custom silicon rubber cases in a variety of colors for $29 each. The cases, bizarrely, have a 5 x 7 grid of holes on the back, so that the original color of the device can be seen and an eye-numbing variety of color combinations can be made.

The iPhone 5C will come in two varieties, a version with 16GB of storage for $99 (with two-year contract) and a version with 32GB of storage for $199 (with contract).

The iPhone 5C will launch in the U.S. alongside the iPhone 5S on September 20. Pre-orders for the device begin on September 13.

  • iOS 7 Release Date Is Officially September 18th

At its big press event, Apple just announced that iOS 7 will be available on September 18th. Tim Cook introduced the event and talked about a few of the company’s latest stats before turning the stage over to Craig Federighi, who revisited the features of the operating system Apple introduced back in June.

The OS has a completely new design and over 200 new features. Apple has provided images and explanations of these on its site since the announcement, and iOS 7 has been available to developers. The news here is that we now know when the general public of iPhone users will get it on their phones.

    Update (from the press release):

iOS 7 will be available as a free software update starting on Wednesday, September 18 for iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and iPod touch (fifth generation). Some features may not be available on all products.

*US English, French and German will be available with the launch of iOS 7. Additional languages will be added over time.
**iTunes Radio will be available with the launch of iOS 7 in the US.

Following the announcement, the company proceeded to announce the new iPhone 5C and 5S.
