  • Anna Chlumsky: “Veep” Role Enabled Her To Be Picky

Anna Chlumsky has certainly come a long way from her years as the charming Vada Sultenfuss on 1991’s My Girl. She now stars in HBO’s hit TV series, Veep, with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss.

She has definitely made a name for herself in that role, earning an Emmy nomination and all. That attention has recently given her the luxury of being able to be a little pickier about her roles.

She said of that new-found luxury, “I’ve certainly gotten to a point where I’m a little pickier, which may or may not be a good thing. I feel like it’s a good thing, but we’ll see what the wallet thinks. People have gotten to see some of what I do, which is what’s so nice. I’m not a stranger now. The big difference with the recognition is that when I go on an audition, I don’t feel like they’re testing my abilities as much as they’re just seeing if it’s a fit. So that’s nice.”

Veep has not been the only project that Anna Chlumsky has been up to. When asked about her experience appearing on Hannibal she said, “I was happy to do something completely different. It stretches you just enough.”

Anna Chlumsky was great when the show began, and she just gets better with time in her role as. She was even TV Guide’s Emmy pick for Best Supporting Actress!

TV Guide said of Anna Chlumsky’s skills,

“We loved Chief of Staff Amy Brookheimer, but we love campaign manager Amy Brookheimer even more. Thanks to Selina’s presidential bid, Chlumsky, who was nominated last year, has shone even brighter, as Amy tapped into her shrewd cunning in her own bid to oust Dan and be named campaign manager. And yes, she still gives good face.”

Come July 10th, we shall see if voters agree with TV Guide when The Emmys roll around. Good luck to Anna Chlumsky!

  • Anna Chlumsky: From Child To Adult Star

Anna Chlumsky: From Child To Adult Star

Anna Chlumsky, the actress known for her childhood roles in My Girl and Uncle Buck, has done the unthinkable. She has adjusted from being a child star to transitioning into an adult acting career. After taking time off for college, Anna has returned to a career in front of the cameras. She currently stars in HBO’s Veep where her role as Amy Brookheimer, the chief of staff to Vice President Selina Meyer, proves she can portray a level-headed adult as easily as she portrayed a spunky adolescent.

Anny Chlumsky recently gave a phone interview where she spoke about the process of reading lines and reviewing the script.

“It’s very rare that you’ll find something where you’ll think, “I don’t want to say it.” I always say that our writers know how to use that language very well. There is a difference between just saying bad language and using it. This is just a delight and fun as can be. It spoils you. I have a gauge of what it is to laugh out loud when I’m reading a script, because that is what happens all the time when we read our own show, and that can make it hard for other things to measure up,” Anna said.

Anna Chlumsky was also questioned about the direction of the show, and quizzed about what fans can expect to see from her character in the near future.

“We’re just in the middle of the first episode, so we’re still kind of new at it. We left off in the second season with [the president] not running again and Selina ramping up her campaign, even though it’s really early. That’s where we pick up. She’s getting out there more, with the voters and caucus goers and whatnot. In the second season, we see her working a lot in the Beltway; now it’s outside the Beltway. We get to see what everybody’s dynamics are with the public, because that is a different persona they put on. Even the staff, and Amy is part of that, tries to read where we all stand in our public persona,” Anna said.

Anna shares her ideas about Veep in the following video.

  • Anna Chlumsky: Baby Before Emmy Nod Keeps Her Grounded

Anna Chlumsky had two major life events occur within just a week of each other, and she says she’s glad they happened in the order they did.

Chlumsky–a former child actress who starred in “My Girl”–just got an Emmy nod for her work on the Julia Louis-Dreyfus vehicle “Veep”, and it came just days after she gave birth to her first child, a little girl named Penelope. Chlumsky, who has won several awards for her work but has never been nominated for an Emmy, said she couldn’t be happier…or more firmly on the ground.

“I’m so glad that she was born first, because I feel very grounded about it. I’m so terribly grateful and appreciative to be noticed for my work, which I think is what this is all about. Your community noticing what it is you do. Having her, and knowing that I’ve got to feed her when she wakes up again — it definitely keeps you on the ground a little bit. My priorities are in check,” she said.

The actress was in the nursery feeding her daughter when she got the call about the award nomination.

My husband and I were hanging in the nursery,” she said. “My manager let me know, and he was so excited that I reacted more to his excitement. It just came out as uncontrollable laughter.”

Chlumsky says now she just has to figure out how to work around breastfeeding to attend the awards show.

  • Anna Chlumsky: “My Girl” will Star in “Veep,” a New HBO Comedy Series

Anna Chlumsky is best known for her role as Vada Sultenfuss in My Girl. Her portrayal as an inquisitive and sensitive hypochondriac won the hearts of millions of viewers and My Girl is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I remember spouting buckets of tears while I watched Vada see her best friend, Thomas J (played by Macauley Culkin), resting peacefully in his coffin.

I followed Chlumsky’s career until 1995 when she was cast in Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain with Christina Ricci. And then it seemed she disappeared off the face of the Earth. Since then, she has appeared in several TV movies and was a guest on two episodes of “Law & Order.”

At 31, Vada is all grown up and will be starring in a new HBO comedy titled “Veep.” Her fellow cast mates include Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale.

But why has she waited so long to get back into the game?

After graduating from the University of Chicago, the fading star fact-checked for Zagat and edited science fiction and fantasy for HarperCollins but became restless.

She told Slate magazine that she received a sign from a stranger shortly after while in the midst of a lunch break crying spell”

“A psychic was handing out her pamphlets, and she said, ‘Excuse me I have a question.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, get away from me.’ But she followed me and poked me on the shoulder and said, ‘Are you the girl from My Girl?’ At the time, I couldn’t go anywhere without someone recognizing me, and I wasn’t in the mood. But before that, maybe for a few weeks, I had friends who said ‘You need to start acting,’ and I was ignoring it. I said, ‘Yes,’ to the psychic, and she was like, ‘You still want to act,’ and I was like, ‘Oh god!’ And she basically … I fell hook, line and sinker. I paid her like, $40 for 10 minutes of palm reading.”

I believe in fate and I believe in Anna Chlumsky. Hopefully her new role reignites her career.
