  • “The Boxtrolls” Trailer Shows Gay Parents Some Love

“The Boxtrolls”, a new animated feature from Laika Studios, isn’t set to release until next fall. But a brief trailer was released this week, and it shows that animated features are becoming more and more accepting of the LGBT community.

The film’s central message–at least according to the trailer–isn’t all that new: families come in all shapes and sizes and colors, and that’s okay. But the way the message is presented, with honesty and a little humor thrown in, is a lovely change of pace.

Laika was also responsible for “Paranorman” and “Coraline” (two favorites around my house), and if that gives any indication of the level of craftsmanship and beautiful artwork we can expect, it’s bound to be a hit. The film is based on the book “Here Be Monsters” by Alan Snow, a gorgeously illustrated tale. Oh, and the voice cast includes Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Tracy Morgan. Just take my money, Boxtrolls.

  • Al Pacino Quits “Despicable Me 2” In Middle Of Recording

Al Pacino is famous for playing the bad guy; even when he’s the good guy, he’s still kind of the bad guy. He yells a lot, he makes crazy eyes, his hair always looks like he’s been awake for 37 hours on an anger binge. He’s gravel-voiced and intimidating. So, he was the perfect choice to play a villain in a children’s movie. Unfortunately, he’s reportedly dropped out due to “creative differences” with the producers of “Despicable Me 2”, the highly-anticipated sequel to the Steve Carrell-led animated feature.

What’s most unfortunate is that he was halfway through the recording of his part, meaning the producers were left in the lurch. They issued this statement:

“Over the production of Despicable Me 2, there were creative differences between us and Al Pacino, who had been cast as the voice of Eduardo in the film. We have mutually decided with Al to replace the voice of Eduardo with a new actor. Universal and Illumination thank Al for his many contributions to the process and look forward to a new actor bringing this memorable character to the screen upon its release this summer.”

In fact, knowing that they had to stick to their tight schedule in order to keep a July 3rd release date, those at the helm of the film made a quick decision and snapped up Benjamin Bratt to take Pacino’s place. No statement yet from Pacino, however.

The film is still slated for a summer release and also stars Steve Carrell, Kristen Wiig, Ken Jeong, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand, and Steve Coogan.

  • Ratchet & Clank Movie Coming in 2015

Ratchet & Clank Movie Coming in 2015

There’s another video game movie adaptation coming. Luckily, it’s not another slapped-together live-action action movie that’s only resemblance to a game is character names and some professional cosplay.

Sony and Insomniac Games, the developers of the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance games (and Spyro), have announced that a Ratchet & Clank movie is currently in the works, to be released sometime in 2015. The movie now has a website, Facebook page, and Twitter account where fans can follow the movie’s development.

Blockade Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment are working on the animated film, though Insomniac is involved in a consulting role for the characters, screenplay, and animation. Rainmaker is known for producing many Barbie straight-to-DVD titles, but was also the company behind ReBoot, Beast Wars: Transformers, and this year’s Escape From Planet Earth.

Check out the teser trailer for the movie below.

Oh, and to celebrate the announcement, Sony is putting all Ratchet & Clank games on PSN on sale next week.
