  • Kansas City Chiefs Remain Unbeaten With Another Win

The Kansas City Chiefs were possibly one of the last teams that most fans and analysts expected to see in this position, over halfway through the season. A team that has struggled in recent years has found new life with their quarterback Alex Smith, and after today, has a record of 9-0.

Their latest win came with a week 9 defeat of the Buffalo Bills. The final score ended with the Chiefs winning 23-13, in a game that they trailed in early on, giving fans a scare. With the win, the Chiefs remain undefeated, and are the last remaining unbeaten team in the NFL. It also matches their best start in franchise history, which was set in 2003.

This victory also marks the ninth straight games that the Kansas City Chiefs have held their opponents to 17 points or fewer, which matches an NFL record that was set by the Atlanta Falcons in 1977. Chiefs coach Andy Reid is also in his first year as their head coach after leaving Philadelphia, and has completely turned around the franchise as they went from worst last year, to being first this year.

The franchise suffered an abysmal record of 2-14 last season. The addition of Alex Smith, who was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year, is also a great help to the team.

The Chiefs were beat in almost every offensive category, but the errors that the Bills committed were simply too much to overcome in the end, and the defense of the Chiefs got to them. It is of course difficult for the Bills to try to compete after their quarterbacks are continually getting injured, and in today’s game they were forced to play Jeff Tuell, the fourth-string player.

If it were not for the amazing showmanship of the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense, they would not have been able to win this game. The offense continued to struggle throughout, and by the end of the game Alex Smith only completed 19 of 29 passes for 124 yards, and Jamaal Charles was held under 100 yards rushing for the first time all season.

The Kansas City Chiefs won an important game, and will carry the momentum with them into the bye week, as the prepare to face off against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos on November 17, in what will surely be one of the better games of the season to watch.

  • Donovan McNabb Honored During Halftime

Donovan McNabb, the former Eagles quarterback was given a special ceremony from the team during their game on Thursday night. McNabb has received quite a bit of criticism throughout his career, and some do not feel that he deserves the honor.

His No. 5 jersey was retired during a special half-time ceremony, becoming the ninth player in team history to receive the honor. Since his retirement and the retiring of his jersey, there has also been talk of a possibility of him being inducted into the hall of fame. He was drafted by the Eagles in 1999 and played eleven seasons, before being traded to the Redskins.

McNabb had a successful career with the Philadelphia Eagles, but since then views of him have switched a bit. He finished out his career in a couple of disappointing final seasons with the Eagles and then played for the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings each for less than a season. It is not easy to make a case for him to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, since only 23 modern-era quarterbacks have become Hall of Famers, and only six of those: Troy Aikman, John Elway, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Warren Moon and Steve Young, debuted within the past 30 years, according to the Washington Post. Although, McNabb’s stats match up pretty well with each of them and his biggest fault is that he never won a Super Bowl, but neither did Marino, Kelly or Moon.

The former Eagles coach, Andy Reid, also made a return to the field during Thursday’s game as the new coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. The game ended with a final score of 26-16 in favor of the Chiefs. The Chiefs become 3-0 after the win and seem to be the real deal this year, after struggling for the past several years. Before the loss, McNabb took a stab at the new Eagles read-option offense being run by Chip Kelly, calling it “just a fad.” He recognizes that it has been working, but in some cases it just does not seem sensible. He was quoted saying, “I tip my hat off to what they’ve been doing the first two weeks, but there comes a time if you’re up by 14, up by 21, maybe with about 11, 10 minutes to go, it’s time to go into a mode where you’re trying eat up some clock.” McNabb played in the West Coast offense under Andy Reid, and believes the new speed-based play-calling is actually a detriment to the Eagles’ success, mentions Philly.com.

The Eagles fans will have to wait and see where this offense takes the team. They are currently 1-2 after their loss.

  • Tony Romo Has Bruised Ribs; Will Play Against KC

After taking a dual-hit from both Matthias Kiwanuka and Justin Trattou during the 2nd quarter of Sunday night’s Cowboys vs. Giants game, Tony Romo remained on the ground and missed the next snap. At first glance, it almost appeared that Cowboys fans (and the rest of the NFL community) would have a chance to delight that someone else would finally be playing quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Fortunately for Tony Romo (and unfortunately for the rest of us), X-rays after last night’s game show that Romo only suffers from bruised ribs. In talking to Dallas’s 105.3 The Fan, Steven Jones, vice-president of the Cowboys, stated that “We feel optimistic with the tests coming back negative. He’ll be sore but something he’ll be able to play with, as it looks right now.’’

Bruised ribs are an injury that most quarterbacks deal with during their tenure in the NFL. Romo, however, has cause for special concern. During a game against the 49ers in 2011, Romo suffered a broken rib and a punctured lung after being hit by linebacker Ahmad Brooks. Despite the injury, however, Romo was able to come back into the game and lead his team to victory. Perhaps that is why the Cowboys and Romo are so optimistic concerning his return Sunday. There should still be some worry on behalf of the Cowboys, however. Dez Bryant suffered a sprain foot during the 4th quarter of Sunday night’s game, and cornerback Morris Claiborne also suffered an injury to his shoulder.

Despite the criticism constantly surrounding Romo and his injury Sunday night, Romo showcased why he is a starting NFL quarterback. Romo completed 36 of 49 passes for 263 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Fans can only hope that Romo will repeat this performance next week against the Kansas City Chiefs, who saw a spark of life in their first game of the year with a 28-2 victory over Jacksonville, behind the efforts of new quarterback Alex Smith (formerly of the 49’ers) and new head coach Andy Reid (formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles).

  • Chip Kelly May Find An NFL Home This Weekend

Oregon coach Chip Kelly has been interviewed for the currently vacant head coach position with the Cleveland Browns, and is also expected to meet with the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles sometime this weekend.

ESPN is reporting that both teams are in Arizona, and have scheduled meetings with Kelly over the next two days.

Kelly’s Oregon Ducks won the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, beating Kansas State 35-17, so if this marks the end of his collegiate coaching career, it’s a good note to go out on.

Kelly was named the Pac 10 Coach of the Year both in 2009 and in 2010. He was the offensive coordinator for the Ducks before being named the head coach. He’s from New Hampshire, so any of the three teams he is said to be interviewing with would put him much closer to home than in Oregon.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid who was relieved of his duties this past week, has already landed with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to multiple reports. Though the Eagles were eager to get rid of Reid after a lackluster season, it’s no surprise that he has already found a head coaching job in the NFL, considering the success he has had in Philadelphia. He hasn’t won any Super Bowls for the city of brotherly love, but he’s gotten the team there, and to five NFC championships during his time with the team. He’s been with the Eagles since 1999.
