  • Anderson Silva Shuns Weidman Rematch; Eyes Diaz

At UFC 168 in December of 2013, Anderson Silva, once undefeated MMA middleweight champion of the UFC, suffered one of the most gruesome injuries in sports history, shattering his leg against the shin of competitor Chris Weidman. The injury not only led to Silva’s second consecutive defeat to the now UFC middleweight champion but also led to a longtime layoff from the sport itself.

Currently, Silva and his trainers expect “The Spider” to return to the octagon in 2015, with his manager Ed Soares saying, “He’s definitely coming back. He’s feeling good, he’s training hard. Everything is good, man. Hopefully we’ll see him back. We won’t see him back any earlier than the end of this year or, most likely, the beginning of next year. There’s always a chance (he comes back in 2014), but as of right now I think his mind is set on fighting at the beginning of next year.”

However, when Silva returns to the octagon, revenge for his two losses against Weidman is the furthest thing from his mind:

Rematch with Chris Weidman is something that is not in my plans. He already defeated me twice, everybody saw this. Lyoto (Machida) has an opportunity to fight him, we also have ‘Jacare’ (Souza), who’s coming and looking for his way. Let’s root for them to get their space in the UFC and get their shot at the title, win it, become great champions and bring big wins for Brazil.

If not Weidman, then who? Apparently, “The Spider” wants his next victim to be the Stockton Slugger himself, Nick Diaz.

Silva is not the only person who wants to see him weigh-in across from Diaz. Diaz, himself, has been asking for the match-up since at least October of 2012. Soares, Silva’s manager, believes that the match-up has potential as well:

There’s Michael Bisping, there’s Cung Le. Even Nick Diaz. Nick Diaz has said he’s wanted to fight him before. Nick Diaz wanted to box Roy Jones Jr. You could argue that Nick Diaz and Anderson probably have some of the best boxing in MMA, so we’ll see what happens.

Whatever the decision, one thing is certain – Whoever matches up against Silva should still be scared, regardless of his two recent defeats at the hands of Weidman.

“Quitting is taking an eternal defeat. In Team Nogueira, we never give up – strength, honor and determination are fundamental. Here at Team Nogueira, we are family. Ready and determined to do that, we have to do. Never give up and never surrender. Believe that we can and like you too – believe that you can, exceed your limits, overcome problems, and believe,” stated Silva.

Anderson Silva Says He’s Coming Back To UFC

MMA fans will be glad to know that Brazilian fighter Anderson Silva, who suffered a devastating—and some said career-breaking—injury at UFC 168 is doing exceptionally well in his rehabilitation. In a Twitter post, he uploaded an old photo of him doing some grappling exercises. It was captioned “Estou voltando,” which means “I’m coming back.”

It has almost been two months since the former UFC middleweight champ got seriously injured in a match against current champion Chris Weidman. Silva positioned himself for a left kick, but Weidman checked it, causing Silva to snap his lower left leg bone. Silva’s fibula  (calf bone) was reset but he had to undergo orthopedic surgery to stabilize his tibia (shin bone).

At that point, it looked like Silva was on his way to retirement.

UFC president Dana White believes this is not so, and that Silva will once again fight his way in the Octagon. This is confirmed by no less than the Brazilian fighter himself, during an interview on Sunday, February 16. He shared how difficult the recovery process is, and the excruciating pain he experiences. He is making a great effort to understand why the injury happened, and resolves to return.

Silva is still in the early stages of recovery, but his managers Ed Soares and Jorge Guimaraes are already musing on a match between him and former welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre. The two managers, who have guided Silva since his UFC debut eight years ago, are hopeful about the match, especially when they see Silva doing well in his physical therapy. According to Silva’s orthopedic surgeon, the fighter can return to his training in six months at the very least.

Silva will be 39 years old when he decides to return to the MMA. He may never put his full weight on his left leg. His doctors may not even let him return to fighting. These are the uncertainties facing Silva’s career, but these do not weaken his determination to fight again. And he is not going to retire, not just yet. He says he still has a lot to accomplish, “and I have no such intention of stopping.”

  • Anderson Silva Recovering From Leg Surgery

On Sunday Dec. 29, UFC officials announced that mixed martial artists Anderson Silva’s leg surgery was a success. The former UFC Middleweight Champion underwent an extensive operation after breaking his left leg.

According to The Sports Xchange, UFC orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Steven Sanders performed the operation. It was also reported that the Brazilian fighter was later transported to a local Las Vegas hospital after the operation was complete.

“The successful surgery inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson’s left tibia,” UFC officials said in a statement. “The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery.”

UFC officials also announced a tentative timetable for Silva’s recovery. “Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months.”

Dana White, UFC President, also weighed in on Silva’s condition. She spoke of the possibility of Silva’s return to the ring. However, she gave an honest assessment of the type of injury Silva sustained. White also explained Silva’s injuries are usually “a tough thing to come back from”.

“Maybe he’ll want to make a comeback, but who knows,” White said. “We’ll see what happens. I don’t want to count him out. I don’t want to count him in. The important thing is he gets the surgery and heals up.”

The 38-year-old fighter sustained the leg injury during Saturday night’s fight against current UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman. The injury occurred when Silva’s leg kick was checked by Weidman. Silva, who was attempting to reclaim the title, was rushed to emergency surgery immediately after the fight.

Silva took to Twitter thank fans for their support, assuring everyone of his recovery. He also included a picture of himself surrounded by his five children.

  • UFC: Silva Recovering From Injury; Return Unsure

UFC watchers were stunned last night as they watched Anderson Silva’s leg shatter while throwing a kick.

The anticipated mixed martial arts rematch between former champion and record holder Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman got off to an exciting start, with Weidman dominating early. The fight almost ended in the first round with a massive right punch by Weidman that put Silva in a obvious shock.

In the second round, Silva came back viciously with a number of kick attacks to wear Weidman down. Unfortunately for Silva, Weidman was prepared for these kicks. Yahoo Sports shares Weidman’s statements about those kicks in the post-fight interview:

“We knew that in the last fight he hurt me most with the leg kicks so we trained checking them a lot. The goal is to get your knee up and allow them to make contact with their shin right there. As soon as he hit me with that kick and moved backwards I knew right away.”

As Silva’s kick connected, Weidman apparently checked him so effectively that it ended in Silva’s shin freakishly snapping.

A horrific end to a rematch that was painfully reminiscent to their last meeting– in their last battle, Silva lost to Weidman in a second round knockout.

According to mmafighting.com, Silva’s team released some good news regarding his immediate surgery:

“Following Saturday evening’s UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg. The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC’s orthopedic surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson’s left tibia. The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery. Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months.”

Silva has not made a decision as to if he’ll return to the ring, but he left a touching message earlier today to Brazil:

Unfortunate turn of events for a participant in such a rough and tumble sport, but time will tell if we will see him back in the ring.

  • Anderson Silva’s Surgery A Success

    Anderson Silva’s Surgery A Success

Anderson Silva fought against Chris Weidman to try to retake the UFC middleweight title last night, during the UFC 168. However, Silva was, once again, defeated by Weidman after throwing one of his legendary leg kicks that landed him in the operating room.

“Following Saturday evening’s UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg,” read the statement issued by the UFC. “The successful surgery, performed by Dr.

“Anderson is deeply touched by the outpouring of support from his fans and the entire MMA community,” the statement continued. “There has been no immediate decision about his future, and he would kindly ask for privacy at this time as he deals with his injury and prepares to return home to recover.”

While Dana White, the president of the UFC, says that it is possible that Silva could return to the octagon after he recovers, he does not know any specific details yet. “Maybe he’ll want to make a comeback, but who knows,” White said. “We’ll see what happens. I don’t want to count him out. I don’t want to count him in. The important thing is he gets the surgery and heals up.”

“Brasil, I’m sorry, I didn’t want to let you down,” Silva tweeted on Sunday morning. “I gave my best, I swear.”
