  • AmazonFresh Heads To New York City

AmazonFresh Heads To New York City

Amazon is launching its grocery delivery service AmazonFresh in New York on Friday, according to a report from Re/code, which previously reported that the launch was coming this month.

Amazon first introduced the service in Seattle last year, before expanding it into California areas like Los Angeles and San Francisco. This would be the first the East Coast has seen of it.

According to the report, AmazonFresh will only be available in the Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn before expanding to other neighborhoods. It says food for the service is stored in a new warehouse in Avenel, New
Jersey, which is roughly 20 miles away from Park Slope.

The movie signals just how serious Amazon is about becoming a player in groceries, and follows the recent launch of its other grocery service Prime Pantry.

AmazonFresh is only being offered to Prime members as well, and while there won’t be delivery fees throughout the rest of the year, members will reportedly have to switch over to a “Prime Fresh” program in 2015.

The New York launch also comes as Amazon is said to be getting ready to open up a brick-and-mortar store in Manhattan, where it would handle various customer services and sell Amazon hardware such as phones, tablets, and Kindle devices.

While It’s Not Using Drones Yet, Amazon’s Grocery Delivery Service Is Expanding

Update: AmazonFresh has now officially launched in San Francisco. You can browse here.

It looks like AmazonFresh, Amazon’s grocery delivery service, is expanding into its third city – San Francisco.

The service initially launched in Seattle a few years ago, but expanded into the Los Angeles area earlier this year. Soon, San Francisco residents will be able to order groceries online, and have them delivered to their home right from the Internet retail giant.

And no, these groceries will not be delivered by drones. At least not yet.

All Things D is reporting that a launch may come next week, and that AmazonFresh trucks have already been spotted in the area. As further confirmation, a job posting in October indicated a coming Bay Area launch for the service.

AmazonFresh provides Amazon Prime members with free same-day and early morning delivery on orders over $35 of more than 500,000 Amazon items, including fresh grocery and local products (including from restaurants).

Rival Google Shopping Express is already available in San Francisco:

And its best-sellers are simple grocery items:

We imagine that drones, robots and self-driving cars will eventually be doing a lot of the delivery for both services if everything goes according to plan.

  • AmazonFresh, Amazon’s Grocery Delivery Service, Launches in L.A.

Last week, we told you that Amazon was about to get more serious about groceries by expanding their AmazonFresh grocery delivery service outside of Seattle – the only place where it has been offered for the past few years.

Today, they’ve done just that. AmazonFresh is now available in Los Angeles in select zip codes. AmazonFresh offers free grocery delivery (produce, meat, alcohol, etc.) to members. It first launched in Seattle way back in 2007.

Amazon is offering a free 90-day trial of AmazonFresh to Amazon Prime members. After that, your Prime membership will be “upgraded” to a Prime Fresh membership. That entails a $299 yearly fee. Amazon says that through AmazonFresh, members have access to more the 500,000 items and free same-day delivery on orders of $35 or more.

Reports indicate that this expansion into L.A. is just the beginning. After developing AmazonFresh in Seattle for the past 6 years, Amazon is ready to make a bigger push into more markets – San Francisco later this year and possibly 20 or so other urban areas in 2014.

  • Amazon May Be Getting More Serious About Groceries, Expanding AmazonFresh Outside Seattle

Amazon may be looking to make a significant dive into the grocery business, as the company is looking to expand its small grocery program AmazonFresh to other cities in the upcoming months.

In fact, the first expansion could be as early as this week. Reuters reports that AmazonFresh may be coming to Los Angeles this weeks and San Francisco later in 2013.

Currently, AmazonFresh is a Seattle-only service that provides grocery delivery (produce, meat, alcohol, etc.) to over 80 different zip codes in the area.

Here’s how Amazon describes their small AmazonFresh program:

“We are a home grocery delivery service offering a full selection of fresh groceries, including produce, dairy, meat and seafood – even alcohol. We also carry products from iconic local merchants and farmers. We provide fast, convenient delivery straight to your home in as little as four hours of placing your order and FREE delivery on qualifying orders. We also offer best-selling Amazon.com items to add right to your grocery order.”

According to Reuters’ anonymous sources, Amazon will use the two non-Seattle expansions as a gauge for a larger rollout next year. Apparently, Amazon is eyeing the launch of AmazonFresh in 20 other urban areas in 2014 – some even outside the U.S. The grocery business is a tricky one – but there’s money to be made and Amazon knows that. They’ve sure had plenty of time to test the program in Seattle – it first launched way back in 2007.
