  • Amazon’s Appstore Name Is Not False Advertising Says Judge in Ruling Against Apple

As Amazon planned to launch their own Appstore for Android, Apple decided that the name “Appstore” was too similar to their own App Store – and therefore a lawsuit was in order. Apple attempted to prevent Amazon from launching their own Appstore for Android, saying that it constituted “a false advertisement that misrepresents the nature, characteristics and qualities of Amazon’s mobile download service and/or deceives or has a tendency to deceive a substantial segment of consumers into believing that Amazon’s service has the nature, characteristics, and/or qualities of Apple’s APP STORE service.”

Apple claimed that this misrepresentation would hurt their bottom line, as well as “lessen the goodwill associated with Apple’s App Store.”

Amazon responded, claiming that “app store” is a generic term and therefore Apple has no basis for their claim.

Now, nearly two years after Amazon unveiled the Appstore for Android, a U.S. District Court has sided with Amazon, saying that the motion to dismiss must be granted.

Here’s what Judge Phyllis Hamilton had to say:

[T]he court finds no support for the proposition that Amazon has expressly or impliedly communicated that its Appstore for Android possesses the characteristics and qualities that the public has come to expect from the Apple APP STORE and/or Apple products. That is, Apple has failed to establish that Amazon made any false statement (express or implied) of fact that actually deceived or had the tendency to deceive a substantial segment of its audience. The mere use of “Appstore” by Amazon to designate a site for viewing and downloading/purchasing apps cannot be construed as a representation that the nature, characteristics, or quality of the Amazon Appstore is the same as that of the Apple APP STORE. Apple has pointed to no advertisement by Amazon that qualifies as a false statement under § 43(a) of the Lanham Act. Nor is there sufficient evidence to raise a triable issue

She goes on to say that there’s no evidence that anyone visiting the Amazon Appstore for Android would expect “that it would be identical to the Apple APP STORE, particularly given that the Apple APP STORE sells apps solely for Apple devices, while the Amazon Appstore sells apps solely for Android and Kindle devices.”

This ruling only addressed the false advertising part of Apple’s claims, so we’ll have to wait for another ruling are on the trademark infringement claim. But for now, score one for the guys at Amazon.

  • Amazon Third-Party Sellers Saw Tremendous Sales Over The Holiday Season

Amazon Third-Party Sellers Saw Tremendous Sales Over The Holiday Season

Businesses selling their goods on Amazon had their best holiday season yet, according to Amazon. The company has over two million third-party sellers on Amazon Marketplace, and unit growth from U.S. sellers grew over 40% year-over-year.

“We value the breadth and depth of selection that businesses selling on Amazon offer our more than 188 million active customers worldwide,” said Peter Faricy, VP for Amazon Marketplace. “The entire Amazon Seller organization is focused on helping third-party businesses succeed and grow on Amazon. We do this by creating a dynamic marketplace platform that helps every seller deliver the best possible selection, service and prices to all Amazon customers.”

Amazon says third-party sellers sold enough smartphone and tablet screen protectors to cover every NFL stadium four times over. That’s not surprising considering the amount of mobile device activations reported for Christmas day alone.

Interestingly, sellers also sold something like 50,000 Santa hats and 500,000 guitar picks. Amazon says sellers also sold “enough mustache pacifiers to give one to every baby born in Washington State next month,” and “enough tea lights to keep a votive illuminated continuously for over 200 years.”

Amazon says sellers using its various ecommerce services (like Webstore, Payments and Product Ads) set records in sales volume, traffic and services performance.

  • Amazon Smartphone to Launch in 2013 (Rumor)

Back in July there were hushed rumors that Amazon would enter the smartphone market with a device that would compliment its existing Kindle tablet lineup. Today it appears that those rumors have been corroborated and the “Kindle Phone” may be coming as soon as next summer.

The China Economic News Service, a Taiwanese business publication issued a report stating that Foxconn, the famed manufacturer of Apple’s iPhone devices, has created a new smartphone for Amazon. The device is reportedly set to be launched between the second and third quarters of 2013. The manufacturer is “expected to ship as many as five million units” of the smartphone. The handset is also expected to be “budget-priced,” with a unit price of $100 to $200.

With the success of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet line-up this holiday season, the leap to a phone-sized device isn’t a large one. Based on Amazon’s tablet strategy, it’s likely that the smartphone will run a heavily-modified Android operating system similar to the Kindle Fire HD. The Kindle Fire OS focuses heavily on Amazon’s products and subscription service, Amazon Prime.

The smartphone market is already so dominated by Android and iPhone devices that platforms such as RIM and Windows Phone 8 hold only marginal shares of the market. It will be interesting to see if Amazon can put out a true competitor device that is low-priced and lures customers who are already heavily invested in Amazon’s digital media ecosystem.

  • Amazon Prime Adds TNT Dramas to Its Catalog

Amazon has just announced a new licensing agreement with Turner Broadcasting System and Warner Bros to bring two popular cable dramas to their Prime Instant Video catalog.

Starting today, Amazon Prime members will be able to watch all current episodes of the two TNT dramas The Closer and Falling Skies.

“We are pleased to offer Falling Skies to Amazon Prime members,” said Deborah K. Bradley, Senior Vice President of Program Acquisitions for Turner Broadcasting. “Subscription-on-demand services continue to grow in the consumer marketplace, and this deal represents a way to help expand our viewership from TV Everywhere and introduce a wider audience to this hit series.”

TNT’s The Closer was crowned the #1 show on basic cable five times, and Falling Skies was also popular over the summer, hitting #1 in some demographics. Users will have access to all 109 episodes of The Closer and the first two seasons of Falling Skies, which just ended season two back in August. The deal also covers future seasons of Falling Skies, the next of which will debut in 2013.

“Today’s agreements with TNT and Warner Bros. Domestic TV add two great TV series to Prime Instant Video,” said Brad Beale, Director of Digital Video Content Acquisition for Amazon. “Falling Skies and The Closer are some of Turner’s most-watched and highly talked about series and we’re happy to offer them exclusively for Prime members to enjoy. Amazon Prime just got even better.”

Amazon boasts that their Prime Instant Video catalog currently has over 30,000 movies and TV episodes. Amazon just recently launched their Instant Video app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, so you can now watch there TNT dramas on your smaller iDevices.

  • Fifty Shades of Grey Shocks as Top Amazon Book of the Year

No really, of course. Nobody should be surprised that an entry in the popular trilogy took Amazon’s yearly crown, as it was a pretty big year for masturbatory fiction.

It was actually book three (Fifty Shades Freed) that grabbed the top spot. That’s because the first two in series, not published in 2012, couldn’t be included in the list. The E.L. James novel was followed by Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl: A Novel” and the 3-volume boxed set of the Fifty Shades series. The rest of the top ten list, which take into account print and Kindle versions, is as follows:

“Bared to You: A Crossfire Novel” by Sylvia Day; “No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden” by Mark Owen; “The Marriage Bargain (Marriage to a Billionaire)” by Jennifer Probst; “Reflected in You: A Crossfire Novel” by Sylvia Day; “The Racketeer” by John Grisham; “Defending Jacob: A Novel” by William Landay; “The Innocent” by David Baldacci.

“This was truly the year of the billionaire bad boy in romance—Amazon readers just couldn’t get enough of the genre,” said Sara Nelson, Editorial Director of Books and Kindle at Amazon. “While E. L. James published the first two books in her Fifty Shades trilogy in 2011, so they aren’t eligible for our 2012 list, the series really took off this year and propelled the third installment and the omnibus edition onto our top 10 list. It’s also interesting to note that four of the five contemporary romance titles in the top 10 list, including the Fifty Shades trilogy, were originally independently published and went on to become huge best sellers.”

When it comes to kids & teens books, a Fifty Shades book didn’t win (luckily). What did claim the top overall spot was “The Mark of Athena,” book three in Rick Riordan’s “Heroes of Olympus” series. Here’s the rest of that top ten list, in order:

The Third Wheel (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Book 7)” by Jeff Kinney; “Insurgent (Divergent)” by Veronica Roth; “The Serpent’s Shadow (The Kane Chronicles, Book 3)” by Rick Riordan; “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green; “City of Lost Souls (Mortal Instruments)” by Cassandra Clare; “While it Lasts” by Abbi Glines; “The Rise of Nine (Lorien Legacies, Book 3)” by Pittacus Lore; “Wonder” by R. J. Palacio; “Nevermore: The Final Maximum Ride Adventure (Book 8)” by James Patterson.

Amazon has the whole top-100 lists for both print and Kindle, adult and kids available on their Best Books 2012 page.

  • Amazon Launches Instant Video App on the Smaller iDevices, Adds Cloud Player App to Samsung TVs & Roku

Amazon Launches Instant Video App on the Smaller iDevices, Adds Cloud Player App to Samsung TVs & Roku

Amazon had just announced a few moves to expand the accessibility of content across multiple devices – bringing their streaming video app to the iPhone as well as Cloud Player apps to two new devices.

Previously only available for the iPad, Amazon’s Instant Video app is now ready for download on your iPhone and iPod Touch.

Amazon Prime members now have access to over 30,000 streaming titles on their smaller iOS devices, including hit TV shows like American Horror Story and Downton Abbey. Customers of Amazon Instant Video can now purchase from a library of over 140,000 movies and TV shows from their iPhone and iPod Touch.

The app has added a “Watchlist” feature, which “lets customers make a list of all the movies and TV episodes they want to watch in the future, regardless of whether they own the video or not.”

“Our customers tell us they want the convenience of being able to watch all of their movies and TV episodes, wherever they are,” said Anthony Bay, Amazon.com Vice President for Video. “Today we’re excited to extend our ‘buy once, enjoy everywhere’ approach to iPhone and iPod touch users, giving customers the chance to enjoy more than 140,000 titles from Amazon Instant Video and more than 30,000 titles from Prime Instant Video anytime, anywhere.”

Amazon has also announced a new Cloud Player app for Samsung Smart TVs, making it easier for users to access their music from any location.

“The Amazon Cloud Player app, which can be found in the Samsung Smart Hub, provides customers with the ability to browse, search or playback music from their library directly on their TVs,” says Amazon.

The Amazon Cloud Player has also dropped on Roku The Roku blog details the new features of the app:

“Shuffle play an album, all songs from an artist, all songs within a genre, a playlist or even all songs; Search for any album, artist or song in your account; Enjoy your music collection in high-quality 256 Kbps audio; View song details and album art on a smooth scrolling screensaver; Continue playback while browsing and quickly access the “Now Playing” song through a shortcut”

More ways to access your Amazon content – never a bad thing.

  • Kindle Fire Developers Can Now Send Push Notifications To Users

One of the benefits of building apps for Android and iOS is that developers can use push notifications as a way of keeping users engaged. A game can remind players of a special in-game event, or a dining app can remind users that their favorite restaurant is offering discounts. These kind of messages will now be available on Kindle Fire through the Amazon Device Messaging API.

Amazon announced today that its Device Messaging API has now entered a closed beta. The API will let developers send push notifications to users in an attempt to drive use and monetization. The API has three core features that Amazon thinks will entice developers into implementing it into their apps:

  • Simple. Amazon Device Messaging is a transport mechanism, optimized to queue your messages and deliver them to a targeted instance of your app. For example, upon receiving a message, your app might post a notification, display a custom user interface, or sync data.
  • Efficient. Amazon Device Messaging respects users’ battery life, so you can, too. Using the Amazon Device Messaging service allows your app to avoid performing polling, a serious battery drain, while not requiring additional power to stay connected —a benefit your users will appreciate.
  • Free. In addition to providing a best-in-class payload size of up to 6KB per message, Amazon Device Messaging is available at no cost to developers.
  • It’s noted that Amazon Device Messaging only works on the Kindle Fire HD and second generation Kindle Fire devices. There’s no word on if Amazon is planning to bring push notifications to first generation Kindle Fires, but it’s probably not going to happen.

Interested developers can sign up for the beta here. We’ll keep you posted on when the API becomes available for all.

  • Amazon Makes Sure You Never Forget A Birthday Again

Everybody loves birthday presents, but the best we can ever hope for is a half-sincere “Happy Birthday” post on our Facebook wall. Amazon is going to fix that, and have you buy the gift from them in the process.

Amazon announced today its new Friends and Family Gifting service. In essence, it reminds customers when important birthdays, holidays, and special occasions are coming up, and what kind of gifts to get. Here’s the full breakdown of all the features:

  • Keep Track of Friends & Family: Store important dates like birthdays and anniversaries with just a few clicks and get reminders.
  • Add Information about Friends: Customers can find existing Amazon Wish Lists to make it easy to find the perfect gift for their friends. By connecting their Amazon and Facebook accounts, customers can also use information about their Facebook friends, such as the things their friends ‘Like,’ to select a gift.
  • Great for Kids: Make it even easier to find the best gifts for kids, as Amazon Friends & Family Gifting provides gift recommendations by age and interest.
  • It’s a useful service, but one that seems kind of useless in today’s world of gift cards. I can’t even remember the last time I received a gift outside of my immediate family. It’s more convenient to just dump some cash on a gift card, and toss it in a birthday card. Is it thoughtful? Not really, but when has gift giving been a thoughtful process?

If you revel in the gift giving process, you can start adding friends and family to your Amazon shopping experience here.

  • Amazon Extends Order Deadlines For Last Minute Christmas Shoppers

Amazon may be the largest online retailer, but it can’t magically deliver Christmas packages to you at the last minute. That being said, the retailer has extended its deadlines for people who want to get gifts in time for Christmas without having to resort to expensive shipping.

It was announced today that Amazon has extended its ordering deadline by two days. That means that those who use Amazon’s Free Super Saver Shipping have a bit more time to get those Christmas orders in. Amazon Prime members also benefit as their free two-day shipping translates to some serious last minute shopping. Here’s the new schedule shoppers must abide by if they want their packages to arrive by Christmas:

  • Dec. 18: Free Super Saver Shipping
  • Dec. 19: Standard Shipping
  • Dec. 21: Two-Day Shipping (order as late as 7:00 p.m. EST; varies by item; free with Amazon Prime)
  • Dec. 22: One-Day Shipping (order as late as 3:00 p.m. EST; varies by item; as low as $3.99/item with Amazon Prime)
  • Dec. 24: Local Express Delivery (while available; select cities; varies by item; as low as $3.99/item with Amazon Prime)
  • Dec. 25: Email and printable Amazon Gift Cards can be sent immediately, at any time
  • With this move, Amazon is positioning itself as the go-to destination for the last minute Christmas shoppers that can never decide what to get friends and family until it’s already too late. At least one can now pick a gift from Amazon’s massive selection of products instead of going to the local dollar store and picking up a cheap ornamental dolphin.

  • Amazon Now Offers Crash Reports To Developers

Amazon announced that it was providing free A/B testing to developers who made apps for its platform, but the goodies aren’t stopping there. Now developers will have access to crash reports as well.

In the spirit of debugging mobile apps, Amazon will now provide crash reports to all developers who use its Mobile App Distribution Portal. The reports will help developers diagnose errors caused by unhandled Java exceptions.

The crash reports will be available udder the Reporting section of the Mobile App Distribution Portal. Upon logging in, you’ll be greeted with a basic summary of all your apps and the number of crash reports that have been collected for each one. Going deeper, you’ll find the various error types that caused the crash . From there, each error will have its own page that details its device, OS or version dependencies.

Amazon Now Offers Crash Reports To Developers

Amazon’s hope is that developers will proactively use this new tool to hunt down and fix crash errors. It will only serve to improve the customer experience and sell more apps, which means Amazon and you will both make more money. It’s a win-win situation.

If you have an Amazon developer account, you can start checking out error reports now at Amazon’s Mobile App Distribution page.

  • Kindle Fire Is Now Available At GameStop

When you think of GameStop, you generally think of console titles lining the walls and 8,000 copies of Madden NFL 08 going for $1.99 each. The gaming retail giant has changed its image over the past year, however, to a store that peddles all gaming devices, including Android and iOS tablets. Now the store has earned a powerful partner in Amazon.

GameStop announced today that it’s now an official retailer for Amazon’s insanely popular Kindle Fire tablets. The games retailer will sell the updated Kindle Fire, the Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch. As an added incentive, those who purchase a Kindle Fire from GameStop will get a $25 Amazon gift card.

“Android tablets are topping many holiday lists, so it’s the perfect time to add Kindle Fire to GameStop’s mobile electronics selection,” said Joe Gorman, vice president of mobile at GameStop. “And with customers able to trade old video games, devices and more toward the purchase of new products, including Kindle Fire, we’re making it easier than ever for customers to get the holiday gifts they want.”

In a year where tablets are topping wish lists for kids and adults, GameStop has to capitalize on the holiday rush for said devices. The Kindle Fire is one of the more accessible and cheaper tablets that folks can buy, and the quality of games on the Kindle Fire rivals that of other platforms.

The Kindle Fire joins GameStop’s large portfolio of Android tablets the retailer offers. The most notable being the Nexus 7 from Google. GameStop offers five free games with purchase so the decision may come down to getting five quality games or a $25 gift card that can be used on more than just games as Amazon’s digital storefront offers quite a bit in the way of music and movies.

On a final note, GameStop is also kicking off its trade in program for Kindle Fire devices today. The retailer is offering $100 in-store credit for any original Kindle Fire traded in. It’s a limited time special offer only for the original Kindle Fire as the retailer is only offering $85 for a Kindle Fire HD.

  • Amazon Now Provides Free A/B Testing To Mobile App Developers

The Amazon Appstore is booming, and Kindle Fires are an even bigger hit this holiday season. Developers will want to jump on board to get some of the sweet revenue from the still growing Kindle market. Not to mention, Amazon provides some excellent tools for those who develop for its platforms and distribution channels.

Amazon announced today that developers who go through its Amazon Mobile App Distribution Program will soon have access to free A/B testing. The free testing is built on Amazon’s own Web Services, and promises to scale with an app as it grows.

The new A/B testing service will provide the following features to developers:

  • Free to Use: our A/B Testing service is free to use for developers distributing their app or game through the Amazon Mobile App Distribution Program.
  • Easy Integration: early partners report that the SDK can be integrated and ready for release in less than a day.
  • Precise Control: set up experiments and monitor results from the familiar Mobile App Distribution Portal.
  • Painless Deployment: server-side logic allows you to quickly iterate tests and deploy new, improved experiences to customers without having to resubmit your APK or write any additional client-side code.
  • Effortless Scaling: built on Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s A/B Testing service lets you focus on building great games and apps instead of architecting scalable backend services.
  • For those interested in free A/B testing, Amazon’s service is now available in beta. You can sign up for it here.

  • Amazon (Appropriately) Opens Up Kindle Store in Brazil

Today, Amazon makes another move in global expansion with a launch in one of the biggest countries in the world (and their likely namesake destination) -Brazil.

Starting today, amazon.com.br is the new home to 1.4 million Kindle books priced in Reals. Of these 1.4 million titles, Amazon says that over 13,000 of them are in Portuguese.

Amazon is also bringing free Portuguese Kindle Reading Apps to the country, as well as opening up Kindle Direct Publishing for Brazilian independent authors to get their work published worldwide.

It’s important to note that as of now, the Kindle Store is the only Amazon operation that the company is taking to Brazil – no physical sales. Reuters previously reported on the reason for this type of launch, saying that “the all-digital approach will allow Amazon to minimize the risks that a bigger retail launch would imply in a country with notorious infrastructure shortcomings and a complex, costly tax system.”

Basically, Amazon is trying to not bite off more than they can chew in Brazil at the time, and an ebook-only launch seems like the way to do it.

So, Brazilians can now download Kindle books for their Android and iOS devices, as well as their Macs and PCs. And coming soon, the latest Kindle device will make its way into the country:

“We are excited to launch this new Kindle Store for Brazilian customers, offering the most popular best-selling books from many great Brazilian authors, all priced in Reais,” said Alexandre Szapiro, Vice President of Kindle, Amazon.com.br. “We’re also bringing our latest generation Kindle—the best-selling e-reader in the world—to Brazilian customers at a suggested retail price of R$299 in the coming weeks. With the launch of free Kindle reading apps in Portuguese, anyone who has an Android phone, Android tablet, iPhone or iPad, PC or Mac, can start reading Kindle books today.”

  • Amazon Launches “Kindle FreeTime Unlimited” Kids Service

Amazon announced the launch of Kindle FreeTime Unlimited, which the company describes as “the all-you-can-eat content sercvice built from the ground up just for kids”.

“Kindle FreeTime Unlimited brings together for the first time all of the types of content kids and parents love—books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows—into one simple, unlimited, easy-to-use service for kids ages 3-8,” a spokesperson for Amazon tells WebProNews.

The service is only available on the new Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD. For Amazon Prime members, it costs $2.99 per child per month or $6.99 for the whole family. If you’re not a Prime customer, you can get FreeTime Unlimited for $4.99 per child per month or $9.99 per family.

    Amazon Kindle Freetime unlimited
The service includes individual profiles, so everything in each person’s library is their own. Kids can browse by actual content or by category (like “Princesses”), and see applicable books, games and shows.

Apps have in-app payments, ads and social media removed, so you don’t have to worry about your kids getting involved with any of that. Amazon says the content is all pre-screened for “age-appropriateness”.

“As a parent it’s hard to predict what my daughter is going to enjoy, or which movie she’s going to watch 50 times in a row—so I buy a range of content and hope for the best—but I get it wrong frequently,” said Peter Larsen, VP, Amazon Kindle. “FreeTime Unlimited gives kids the freedom to explore age-appropriate content on their own and pick for themselves what they want to watch, play or read next. For as little as $2.99 a month, your child will have unlimited access to thousands of popular books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows from Disney, Nickelodeon, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, PBS, Sesame Workshop and more.”

The service will be part of a free over-the-air software update that Amazon will automatically push to the Kindle Fire devices in the coming weeks.

  • Amazon Announces Redshift, A Petabyte-Scale Data Warehouse Service

Amazon announced a limited preview of Amazon Redshift today, a new product from Amazon Web Services described as a “fast and powerful, fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse service in the cloud”.

According to Amazon, it enables customers to “dramatically” increase the speed of query performance when analyzing any size data set, with the same SQL-based BI tools they’re already using.

“With a few clicks in the AWS Management Console, customers can launch a Redshift cluster, starting with a few hundred gigabytes and scaling to a petabyte or more, for under $1,000 per terabyte per year – one tenth the price of most data warehousing solutions available to customers today,” the company said in an announcement.

Amazon Web Services VP of Database Services, Raju Gulabani, said, “Over the past two years, one of the most frequent requests we’ve heard from customers is for AWS to build a data warehouse service. Enterprises are tired of paying such high prices for their data warehouses and smaller companies can’t afford to analyze the vast amount of data they collect (often throwing away 95% of their data). This frustrates customers as they know the cloud has made it easier and less expensive than ever to collect, store, and analyze data.”

“Amazon Redshift not only significantly lowers the cost of a data warehouse, but also makes it easy to analyze large amounts of data very quickly,” he added. “While actual performance will vary based on each customers’ specific query requirements, our internal tests have shown over 10 times performance improvement when compared to standard relational data warehouses. Having the ability to quickly analyze petabytes of data at a low cost changes the game for our customers.”

Participants in the private beta program include Netflix, Flipboard, NASA/JPL and Schumacher Group.

Kurt Brown, Director of Data Science & Engineering Platform at Netflix, said, “At Netflix, we deliver personalized recommendations for our millions of subscribers by analyzing large volumes of data, and are always looking for ways to improve our service. We’re very excited about the cost-disruptive and cloud-based model of Amazon Redshift. It’s sure to shake up the data warehousing industry.”

Erik Selberg, Manager of the Amazon.com Data Warehouse team, added, “The Amazon Enterprise Data Warehouse manages petabytes of data for every group at Amazon. We are seeing significant performance improvements leveraging Amazon Redshift over our current multi-million dollar data warehouse. Some multi-hour queries finish in under an hour, and some queries that took 5-10 minutes on our current data warehouse are now returning in seconds with Amazon Redshift. Early estimates show the cost of Amazon Redshift will be well under 1/10th the cost of our existing solution. Amazon Redshift is providing us with a cost-effective way to scale with our growing data analysis needs.”

Amazon reportedly also announced today that it has dropped the pricing for its S3 storage service by about 25%

Earlier this week, Google announced some new features, lower prices and extended data center accessibility for its cloud platform, including a price reduction for its Cloud Storage offering, and the introduction of a limited preview of Durable Reduced Availability storage, which provides a lower price storage option for users. More on all of that here.

  • Amazon Appstore Makes the Move to Japan

Today, Amazon has opened up its Appstore to another country. Marking its first expansion into Asia, Amazon has launched the Appstore in Japan.

Like any location, the Amazon Appstore in Japan will feature localized content and a localized mobile store, as well as Amazon’s “free app of the day.” Any and all apps purchased from the Appstore can be used across Android devices (Amazon hopes you chose a Kindle Fire device, of course).

It’s the same Appstore Amazon users are familiar with in six other countries: The U.S., UK, Germany, Spain, France, and Italy.

“The Amazon Appstore connects app and game developers across the globe with Amazon’s enormous customer base, and we’re excited to expand that audience to our millions of customers in Japan,” said Jim Adkins, Vice President of the Amazon Appstore. “Now our customers in Japan can find all of the apps and games they’re looking for and can take advantage of popular programs like Free App of the Day.”

Amazon recently made the Kindle Paperwhite available in Japan, bringing the Kindle Store tot he country back in October. The Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD are also available, and orders of the latter will start shipping on December 19th. It makes sense that Amazon would want the Appstore to be up and running in the country just as customers start receiving their shiny new tablets.

  • Amazon Maps API Now Available To All

As Apple has proven with its iPhone 5 maps blunder, people care about having quality maps on their mobile devices. Until now, however, there’s not been a maps API built specifically for the Kindle Fire. Amazon is fixing that this week.

Amazon announced that its Maps API is now available for all developers. The API was available since September in an open beta, but this week marks the first time that it’s been available to everyone in a stable release. The retail giant says that its maps API has been developed with Kindle Fire apps in mind, and that various developers have already integrated into their own Kindle Fire apps.

For now, the Amazon Maps API is pretty simple. It has two core features that developers can take advantage of:

  • Interactive Maps. You can embed a Map View in your app for customers to pan, zoom and fling around the world. You have the option to display a user’s current location, switch between standard maps and satellite view, and more.
  • Custom Overlays. You can display the locations of businesses, landmarks and other points of interest with your own customized markers and pins.
  • It should be interesting to see what developers will do with the Amazon Maps API on Kindle Fire devices. The obvious use of the API is to build mapping apps, but I can see game developers creating some pretty unique AR games using it. The API could also point to the existence of a rumored Amazon phone since the company will need its own maps app for such a device.

Interested developers can grab the Maps API as part of the Amazon Mobile App SDK. Developers can also check out the documentation here.

  • Kindle Did Pretty Well For Itself Over The Weekend

Amazon has an advantage as an online retail giant – the company can participate in both Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Sure, other companies do as well, but Amazon had great deals going up all the time over the weekend and well into the night on Monday evening. There must have been thousands of TVs, smartphones and other devices sold over the weekend, but the biggest winner was definitely the Kindle.

Over the past weekend, the Kindle family saw its best weekend ever as Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales catapulted the device to the top of the charts. The devices are still sitting atop the worldwide best sellers list, and the Kindle Fire HD is leading the pack.

The Kindle family of products did well on Black Friday, but Cyber Monday is where things really took off. That’s more or less thanks to the Kindle Fire being dropped to $129 for one day. The deal was advertised on Amazon’s front page, and customers responded by making it the “biggest Cyber Monday deal ever for Amazon.com.”

The Kindle Fire HD is also doing pretty well for itself. Amazon says that the device has been the most gifted and most wished for product on Amazon.com since the device’s launch. The tablet will most assuredly be added to more wish lists as the nation moves closer to the holiday season.

“Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fires have held the top 4 spots on the Amazon worldwide best sellers list since launch, and that was before the busiest shopping weekend of the year,” said Dave Limp, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “We’re excited that customers made this Black Friday and Cyber Monday the best ever for Kindle worldwide—Cyber Monday was the biggest day ever for Kindle sales, and we’re looking forward to millions of customers opening a new Kindle this holiday season.”

Amazon made no distinction between sales of the Kindle Fire HD and its bigger sibling, but I’m sure we’ll see a breakdown at the company’s next quarterly results. It will be interesting to see if the larger Kindle is more popular than its 7-inch counterpart.

  • Amazon Offers $3 Credit to Patient Prime Members

If you’re an Amazon Prime member and plan on doing a lot of holiday shopping on the site this year, you may want to get started early. That way, you can benefit from the expanded “No-Rush Delivery” option that Amazon is attaching to eligible items.

As you know, Amazon Prime members pay $79 a year to receive free two-day shipping (among other things like streaming media). Last year, Amazon introduced a “no-rush delivery” option for Prime customers that allowed them to choose standard 5-7 day shipping, for a reward. That reward was a $1 credit to spend at the Amazon MP3 Store.

Now, Amazon has upped the ante by offering a $3 credit for movies and music on select items if you choose the no-rush delivery option.

If you’re looking to use this option, here’s what you need to know:

Prime members may also have the option to choose Free No-Rush Shipping during checkout. You may want to select No-Rush Shipping if you don’t need your items right away. Items will typically be delivered a week after you order them.

Promotional credit in either the Amazon Instant Video Store or the Amazon MP3 Store may be offered for selecting No-Rush Shipping. If so, the credit will be automatically applied to your Amazon.com account once the first package from a No-Rush Shipping-eligible order ships. We’ll send you an e-mail as soon as the credit is available for you to use. You may select No-Rush Shipping as many times as it’s offered to you, but you will not be eligible for the credit if you cancel your No-Rush Shipping order or return items from it.

Earlier this month, Amazon allowed some users to sign up for Amazon Prime on a monthly basis. The $7.99-a-month options wound up costing users more over the course of a whole year, but would have allowed people more flexibility. A few days later, Amazon confirmed that it was merely a test, and that they would be disallowing the monthly subscription option.

  • Following Huge Black Friday, Amazon Begins A Whole Week Of Cyber Monday Deals

Following Huge Black Friday, Amazon Begins A Whole Week Of Cyber Monday Deals

Amazon was the top retail site on a record breaking Black Friday. Not exactly a surprise, but we can also expect similar results for Cyber Monday, which Amazon began participating in at midnight.

That’s when Amazon opened its Cyber Monday Deals Store. Through the store, Amazon is offering thousands of limited-time deals. This includes items like televisions, digital cameras, home theater speaker systems, laptops and other computer hardware, Kindle books, toys, vacuums cleaners, yoga kits, synthesizers, wine sets, and all kinds of stuff.

While the deals may be limited-time, Amazon is offering deals through the Cyber Monday Deals Store throughout the entire week. The deals are, however, offered individually at various times throughout the week.

“We know our customers love shopping on Cyber Monday and finding top deals on gifts for everyone on their list,” said Craig Berman, Vice President, Amazon Global Communications. “We’re excited to offer customers the best prices on popular gift items this season and an easy, stress-free holiday shopping experience – nothing beats the convenience of shopping from anywhere at any time, whether it’s on a PC at work, in line for coffee or lounging on the couch with the Kindle Fire HD.”

I’m not sure employers will be too keen on that shopping from work part, but I would imagine that won’t be stopping many deal seekers. Let’s not forget that people are giving birth and leaving their babies unattended in Walmarts just to get some deals on merchandise (both stories found on reddit over the holiday weekend).

  • Black Friday Breaks Record: E-commerce Spending Surpasses $1 Billion For First Time

Black Friday Breaks Record: E-commerce Spending Surpasses $1 Billion For First Time

Today may be Cyber Monday, but U.S. consumers were not waiting to start their online holiday shopping. Black Friday, which is known as the biggest shopping day of the year for brick and mortars, saw e-commerce spending surpass $1 billion for the first time, reaching $1.042 billion in online sales. This is the heaviest online spending day to date, according to comScore, which provided the data.

Just for comparison, that’s up 26% compared to last year. Even Thanksgiving Day itself saw a 32% increase in online spending, reaching $633 million. For the first 23 days of November, there has been $13.7 billion in U.S. online retail spending, according to comScore.

“Despite the frenzy of media coverage surrounding the importance of Black Friday in the brick-and-mortar world, we continue to see this shopping day become more and more prominent in the e-commerce channel – particularly among those who prefer to avoid crowds at the stores,” said comScore chairman, Gian Fulgoni. “With Black Friday online sales up 26 percent and surpassing $1 billion for the first time, coupled with early reports indicating that Black Friday sales in retail stores were down 1.8 percent, we can now confidently call it a multi-channelmarketing phenomenon.”

“Meanwhile, Thanksgiving Day – which has historically been a lighter online holiday shopping day – continues to gain steam and grew well ahead of the current pace as more consumers opted to kick off their holiday shopping immediately after the big meal to take advantage of aggressive retailer promotions,” Fulgoni added. “With Thanksgiving now behind us and most consumers returning to work…we can look forward with anticipation to Cyber Monday, which according to norms we’ve observed over the past three years should be the heaviest online shopping day of the season with sales approaching $1.5 billion or even higher.”

Well, Cyber Monday is upon is, and we’ll find out just how much consumers are throwing around soon enough.

Amazon, as you might have guessed, ranked as the top retail property for Black Friday, and it’s hard to imagine that Cyber Monday will be any different in that regard. Amazon was followed by Walmart, Best Buy, Target and Apple.

Digital Content & Subscriptions topped the fastest-growing product categories, according to comScore, increasing by 29% year-over-year. Following were Toys with a 27% increase, Consumer Packaged Goods with a 23% increase, Video Game Consoles & Accessories with an 18% increase, and Consumer Electronics, also with an 18% increase.

Apparel & Accessories was the actual top category for online spending on Black Friday, accounting for over a quarter of all dollars spent. This is noteworthy itself, as the category has historically ranked behind Computer Hardware.
