Amazon Upgrades Fulfillment Centers With 15,000 Robots

Amazon announced the launch of its new robot-driven, eighth-generation fulfillment centers. There are ten locations in California, Texas, Florida, New Jersey and Washington with 15,000 robots.

The warehouses are not only utilizing robots, but also vision systems and other high-end technology aimed at speeding up order delivery times.

“The Amazon fulfillment teams are dedicated to innovating in our fulfillment centers to increase speed of delivery while enabling greater local selection at lower costs for our customers. The advancements in our latest fulfillment centers hit all three of these customer desires while continuing to provide a work environment that is great for employees,” said Dave Clark, Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide operations and customer service.

The robots are Kiva robots, which came to Amazon courtesy of the company’s $775 million acquisition of Kiva Systems in 2012. Here’s what they looked like in 2008:

The bots are 320 pounds, and will move around warehouses on wheels.

Amazon will also employ “Robo-Stow,” which it describes as one of the world’s biggest robotic arms. This will move large quantities of inventory for order fulfillment. New vision systems, it says, will enable the unloading and receipt of a whole trailer of inventory in as little as 30 minutes, as opposed to hours.

Finally, the new centers will utilize high-end, graphically oriented computer systems, which employees will use while fulfilling orders.

It’s unclear when Amazon expects to roll the new fulfillment center approach out to the rest of its locations.

The company recently announced it will hire 80,000 seasonal employees to fulfill customer orders throughout the holiday season. This is 14% more than last year. Amazon also says it expects thousands of these people to stay on in regular, full-time positions after the holidays.

  • Amazon To Open New California Fulfillment Center, Create 2,500 Full-Time Jobs

Amazon To Open New California Fulfillment Center, Create 2,500 Full-Time Jobs

Amazon announced plans to open its fifth fulfillment center in California, which will appear in Redlands. The company opened its first center in the state less than two years ago. The California locations are in San Bernardino, Moreno Valley, Patterson and Tracy.

At the new location, employees will pick, pack, and ship large items like big-screen TVs and kayaks, the company says, naming just a couple of examples.

“We are proud to be hiring for more than 2,500 full-time jobs in California that offer wages 30 percent higher than traditional retail stores and include comprehensive benefits on day one, bonuses and stock awards,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations. “We have found great talent in the state and we’re excited to be growing quickly to serve our customers.”

“My Council colleagues and I are very excited that Amazon has chosen the City of Redlands to locate their new fulfillment center. And we are looking forward to the hundreds of new local jobs it will create,” said Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar. “Amazon is among the innovative and successful companies that have recognized our City’s attractive, business-friendly atmosphere, ideal location and skilled and diverse labor force. We are looking forward to Amazon taking its place as a valued member of our business community.”

Amazon has fulfillment centers in California, Arizona, Delaware, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

  • Amazon To Add 2,500 Full-Time Jobs Across Its Fulfillment Centers

Are you looking for a job and don’t want to deal with people in the service industry? Well, Amazon might have a position for you in one of its many fulfillment centers (i.e. warehouses) across the country.

Amazon announced this morning that it’s looking to hire 2,500 full-time workers across its network of U.S. fulfillment centers. While Amazon may say network, it’s really only looking to hire at six of its warehouses. Those six locations are:

  • Chester, Va.
  • Coffeyville, Kan.
  • Columbia, S.C.
  • Dupont, Wash.
  • Murfreesboro, Tenn.
  • Petersburg, Va.
  • “Last year, we hired more than 20,000 people into full-time jobs across our U.S. fulfillment centers – with more than half starting as seasonal employees,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations. “Today, we’re excited to announce 2,500 full-time jobs, bringing new employment opportunities to local communities across the country.”

While the work at Amazon is tough, it does offer some pretty good benefits. For starters, you get healthcare on day one. Other benefits include 401(k) matching, performance-based bonuses and Amazon’s exemplary Career Choice program that pre-pays 95 percent of an employee’s tuition so they can pursue the degree of their choice.

  • Amazon To Open Fulfillment Center in Connecticut

It seems like Amazon is announcing a new fulfillment center every other week now. Far be it from me to criticize the online retailer though as the new warehouses create jobs and serve customers more quickly. Now prospective workers and Amazon customers alike can look forward to a new fulfillment center in Connecticut.

Amazon announced today that it intends to open a new fulfillment center in Windsor, Connecticut. The new warehouse will lead to the creation of more than 300 full-time jobs in the community.

“Amazon is excited to bring hundreds of great full-time jobs to Windsor that offer competitive wages and programs like Career Choice where we will pre-pay tuition for employees to pursue their education in high-demand fields,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations. “We are grateful to the state and local elected officials who have supported Amazon in bringing jobs and investment to the Constitution State.”

It’s been said before, but it’s worth repeating. Amazon is a pretty great place to work as the company offers pay that’s 30 percent higher than the average, a range of benefits and a program it calls “Career Choice.” The program allows Amazon employees to pursue degrees in any field they wish, even those not related to Amazon, and the retailer will pre-pay up to 95 percent of the tuition.

“We are thrilled for Amazon to join the Windsor community, bringing full-time jobs and investment to the area,” said Mayor Don Trinks of Windsor. “The importance of having a company like Amazon in our town and adding new jobs cannot be overstated. We are proud to welcome Amazon to Windsor.”

One interesting thing of note is that Amazon is only looking to hire around 300 full-time employees. Other fulfillment centers run by the online retailer employ thousands so what makes this warehouse different? Amazon notes that this fulfillment center will be solely dedicated to the shipping of large items, like televisions and kayaks, so the reduced need for employees is understandable.

  • Amazon To Open New Fulfillment Center In Wisconsin

It almost seems like Amazon wants to open at least one fulfillment center in every single state across the U.S. If it’s successful, the online retailer may very well be able to reach its goal of providing services like same day delivery and online grocery shopping to every U.S. citizen. It’s still a long ways off, but the state of Wisconsin now joins 14 other states in taking a step towards the future of online shopping.

Amazon announced today that it intends to build a new fulfillment center in Kenosha, Wisconsin. It will be the first fulfillment center in the state and will over 1,000 full-time jobs.

“We are excited to join the Kenosha community, creating more than 1,000 full-time jobs at our new fulfillment center,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations. “We appreciate the state and local elected leaders who have supported Amazon coming to Wisconsin and we look forward to bringing jobs and investment to the state.”

Like all other Amazon jobs, those who work at this new center will get competitive pay, a wide range of benefits, company stock awards and Career Choice. The latter is a program where Amazon will pre-pay up to 95 percent of the tuition costs for its employees to pursue the degree of their choice even if said degree takes them away from Amazon.

“We’ve worked hard over the last few years to turn the Wisconsin economy around and make our state a better place to create jobs. We are proud to welcome Amazon to Wisconsin and are thrilled with the more than 1,000 jobs their expansion will bring to our state. It shows our economy is growing, our reforms are working and we’re headed in the right direction,” said Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. “This is excellent news for the Kenosha community and the state of Wisconsin as a whole.”

The announcement doesn’t include a date by which Amazon expects the new fulfillment center to be completed, but it usually doesn’t take all that long. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the new fulfillment center open by this time next year.

  • Amazon Will Soon Open A New California Fulfillment Center

Amazon has announced plans to open a new fulfillment center in Tacy, California, which the company says will create hundreds of full-time jobs at the million-square-foot site. This will be the company’s third fulfillment center in the state.

Amazon opened its first California fulfillment center in October, in San Bernardino. During the opening of that one, the company donated $25,000 to local nonprofits and announced that it had brought 700 jobs to the area. The company is already having its second California fulfillment center built in Patterson. That one is expected to open this summer.

Tracy Mayor Brent Ives added, “I am honored and pleased that Amazon recognizes our streamlined business development efforts, prime location and resources available to meet the demands of their fulfillment center. Amazon is a wonderful addition to our economic base and will provide hundreds of jobs for residents of Tracy.”

Kish Rajan, Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, said, “This latest development in Tracy not only represents good jobs coming to the region but California’s strong partnership with Amazon. This third new distribution center marks a commitment by Amazon of over 1,000 California jobs in the last year alone. We look forward to continuing our relationship with this world leading brand and hope to build more opportunities for Californians in the future.”
