Amazon Fresh Quadrupling the Threshold for Free Delivery

Beginning February 28, Amazon Fresh customers will need to order quite a bit more to qualify for free delivery.

Amazon Fresh is the company’s grocery division, with physical stores that offer local delivery. Until now, the threshold for free delivery was $35 per order. According to The Verge, the threshold is being raised to $150, effective February 28.

“We’re introducing a service fee on some Amazon Fresh delivery orders to help keep prices low in our online and physical grocery stores as we better cover grocery delivery costs and continue to enable offering a consistent, fast, and high-quality delivery experience,” Amazon spokesperson Lara Hendrickson told The Verge. “We will continue to offer convenient two-hour delivery windows for all orders, and customers in some areas will be able to select a longer delivery window for a reduced fee.”

Orders under $50 will cost $9.95 for delivery. Orders between $50 and $100 will cost $6.95, and orders between $100 and $150 will cost $3.95.

  • Amazon Is About to Start Delivering Groceries in the UK: Report

Amazon Is About to Start Delivering Groceries in the UK: Report

It looks like Amazon is gearing up to take its grocery delivery service across the pond.

Amazon is readying its Amazon Fresh service for the U.K., according to sources familiar with the plans.

    From the Times of London:

Plans for Amazon Fresh are at an advanced stage and it could begin operating in London in September, a development that will have the UK’s already punch-drunk supermarkets reaching for the smelling salts.

The service will pit Amazon against online delivery businesses such as Ocado, as well as Tesco and Sainsbury’s, and pile the pressure on a sector that is already battling with falling prices and the rise of discount chains.

As Re/code points out, Amazon will face stiffer competition in the U.K than it does in the States. Online sales make up an estimated five percent of all grocery sales in the U.K, and only one percent in the U.S.

Amazon Fresh is only available in a handful of U.S. markets including Seattle, New York, Philadelphia, and parts of New Jersey and California.

  • Amazon Unveils ‘Prime Pantry,’ A New Grocery Service For Prime Members

Amazon Unveils ‘Prime Pantry,’ A New Grocery Service For Prime Members

In December, we heard that Amazon was working on a new offering called “Pantry,” which would offer Amazon Prime members about 2,000 grocery products (at first).

Now, the company has revealed the offering under the specific brand name “Amazon Prime Pantry,” and it is indeed a new way to order groceries from the online retail giant.

    Here’s Amazon’s official description:

Prime Pantry is a new shopping experience on Amazon.com. Prime members can shop popular household essentials and have them conveniently delivered.

Adding your first Prime Pantry item to Cart starts a Prime Pantry box. As you shop, you see that each Pantry item tells you what percentage of a Pantry box it fills based on its size and weight. Pantry boxes are large and can hold up to 45 pounds or four cubic feet of household products. As you check items off your list, we continuously track and show you how full your box is.

You can buy as much or as little as you want for a flat $5.99 delivery fee per Prime Pantry box. Save gas, save money, save time.

You can buy food, packaged foods, cookie supplies, beverages, personal care products (like bath/beauty), household supplies (like cleaning products and paper products), and pet supplies. You know, groceries.

This is not to be confused with Amazon’s same-day grocery delivery service Amazon Fresh, though as that expands, a merger between the two offerings doesn’t seem out of the question.

You can browse the Prime Pantry store here.

Maybe one day you can have a drone bring you a roll of toilet paper when you realize that you’re out. The company is already working on its 7th and 8th-generation Prime Air models.
