  • Karen Fairchild, Luke Bryan Wow AMA Crowd With “Home Alone Tonight”

Karen Fairchild of the country band Little Big Town joined Luke Bryan on stage at the American Music Awards on Sunday, and the two wowed the audience with their performance of “Home Alone Tonight.”

Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman introduced Luke Bryan and Karen Fairchild, who then sang in front of a rotating, mirrored stage.

Earlier in the evening, Luke Bryan won the American Music Award for Favorite Male Country Artist. He was handsome as ever, decked out in an all-black outfit.

Karen Fairchild stunned in a black sparkly dress with black thigh-high boots.

Luke Bryan released his sixth album this past year. Called “Kill the Lights,” he will resume his tour of the same name in 2016.

  • Carrie Underwood Wins Big at AMAs, Talks Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert

Carrie Underwood thinks Blake Shelton and ex Miranda Lambert are both “amazing people.”

The country superstar spoke about the couple and their highly-publicized breakup at the American Music Awards red carpet on Sunday.

According to Underwood, no matter what, the country community is one big family.

“Well, I only saw both at the CMAs last, but you know they’re both amazing people,” Underwood said. “And I think, above all, us country folk, our community, we’re family and we just want everybody to be happy.”

Underwood also spoke about her son Isaiah, and how he’ll make it ok no matter what happens at the award show.

“At the end of the day, no matter what I’m a mom,” she said. “No matter how things go tonight … if I win, if I lose, if I do great in my performance, if I don’t, I still get to go home to him. It just makes everything, I don’t want to say less important because this is such an incredible night and I’m excited to be a part of it, but the mom card just trumps everything.”

  • Anna Kendrick Deadpans Hilarious AMAs Acceptance Speech, Talks Threesomes and Dead Hookers

Anna Kendrick deadpanned an hilarious acceptance speech at the AMAs on Sunday, as she and the Pitch Perfect 2 cast won the award for top soundtrack. The actress even managed to talk about dead hookers and threesomes as she and her cast mates accepted their award.

“Holy crap–this is great,” she said. “Thank you so much. We were sent here to represent the film and the soundtrack but obviously we hardly did anything at all we just showed up.”

Anna Kendrick’s trademark humor quickly came to life as she thanked the “unsung heroes of the soundtrack.”

“You’re a ruthless little group of sociopaths,” she added, “and I admire that about you.”

Referencing a three-way, towing out compliments and insults, Anna Kendrick closed by mentioning a hooker she buried and a $37 debt.

Pitch Perfect 2 was up against the Empire soundtrack, as well as the soundtrack for Fifty Shades of Gray.

In addition to Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, and Chrissie Fit accepted the award on behalf of the entire Pitch Perfect 2 cast.

Did you catch the American Music Awards on Sunday evening? What did you think of Anna Kendrick’s acceptance speech?

  • Meghan Trainor Shares Butt-Grab Pic, Says She’s Single

Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth are making headlines today after their sexy makeout session–which took place onstage, in front of millions–at the AMAs on Sunday night, but Trainor took to Instagram afterward to confirm she’s still single.

The duo performed their hit song “Marvin Gaye” while surrounded by kissing couples, and after the song finished, Puth jumped up from his piano and leaned in to give Meghan a long, romantic kiss after she beckoned him over. According to Entertainment Tonight, the smooch lasted 15 seconds and took the crowd by surprise. Puth even grabbed Meghan’s butt during the makeout session, and she later posted a photo of the moment on Instagram with a caption meant to calm their fans.

All about dat ass grab doe @charlieputh proud of you Charlie #imsingle

A photo posted by Meghan Trainor (@meghan_trainor) on

Meghan says she’s still single despite the chemistry between the two of them, and said in a recent interview that it’s tough being a pop star who’s looking for love.

“Even without the fame, if I walk into a room — I kind of have that personality where I just take over the room. I’m like, ‘Hey! M-Train’s here! What’s up!’ Which is very intimidating for guys alone, and then on top of that being a pop star — I get it. I don’t think they’re less interested, I think they’re just intimidated,” Meghan Trainor said. “It’s fine, I’ll wait for him. I’m looking for someone who’s a gentleman, someone who opens that door. A dude pulled out a chair for me the other day and I was like, ‘Whoa! OK, nice!’ That’s new for me. I liked it. And if they’re funny, that’s awesome.”

Puth said during a red carpet interview before the show that he had some nerves, but was looking forward to actually getting up on stage in order to rock out.

“I’m keeping calm right now, but when I get on stage, I’m knocking over that piano bench and going, ‘Ahh! Let it go,’” he said.

  • Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber Not Sitting Side-By-Side at American Music Awards

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were adorable when seated together at the American Music Awards–back in 2011. During tonight’s AMAs, Justin and Selena aren’t seated together.

That likely comes as a huge disappointment to Jelena fans who heard all about Justin Bieber serenading Selena Gomez in that Beverly Hills hotel this weekend.

TMZ reports, however, that the seating charts for the AMAs don’t have the two seated even close to one another.

They also report that Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have requested to “rub shoulders” at tonight’s AMAs. What do you suppose that means?

It is likely that seating for an awards show the size of the American Music Awards takes lots of planning well ahead of time. If seats were switched at the last moment to accommodate Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, lots of others would be inconvenienced as well.

And then there’s the notion that Justin and Selena might not truly be back together again. Even though he sang to her at the hotel lounge, and the two went for a walk together afterward, that isn’t necessarily indicative of romance.

Hollywood Life, however, says the two are “begging” to sit together this evening.

Jelena fans will find hope in the fact that the two requested that shoulder rub. Might that be the beginning of something bigger and better for Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez?

Both Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez will perform at tonight’s AMAs. And while that’s got nothing to do with their relationship–or lack thereof, as the case may be–fans will get to see them perform during the same show.

    It’s better than nothing–right?

  • Infographic Explores What The Reddit AMA Can Teach Us About Marketing

Infographic Explores What The Reddit AMA Can Teach Us About Marketing

The reddit AMA has proven to be a great marketing vehicle for people trying to promote projects they’re involved in, at least for those who are associated with interesting projects (past or present), but what can this Q&A format teach you about marketing in general?

A new infographic from Udemy seeks to answer just that.

“Online marketing strategies can include traditional outbound marketing tactics as well as more modern inbound approaches, but regardless of how you handle online promotion, it’s important to keep adapting and improving your approach to maintain effective communication with your audience. Sometimes the best way of broadening your marketing approach is to examine how successful marketing is accomplished in less conventional places,” the firm says. “Reddit’s popular Ask Me Anything subreddit (r/iAMA) is the perfect example of how ‘brands’ (in this case, personal brands) can productively interact with their audiences and experience promotional benefits while also providing the value readers are looking for. We analyzed some of the most popular recent AMAs to determine what makes them so engaging and what marketers overall can learn from the exchange.”

There are some pretty interesting takeaways here:

Despite some recent turmoil over on reddit, even specifically related to r/iAMA, the subreddit is still home to plenty of Q&As on a regular basis. You might want to stop in and peruse what others have done to get some ideas.

  • Edward Snowden: I Wish I Would Have Come Forward Sooner

Edward Snowden: I Wish I Would Have Come Forward Sooner

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is currently doing a reddit AMA with journalist Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras, the filmmaker who just won an Oscar for her Snowden documentary Citizenfour.

Apart from some technical difficulties (mods accidentally banning his primary account), Snowden is giving some pretty thorough answers to users’ questions.

Here are some of the best:

TheJackal8: Mr. Snowden, if you had a chance to do things over again, would you do anything differently? If so, what?

Snowden: I would have come forward sooner. I talked to Daniel Ellsberg about this at length, who has explained why more eloquently than I can.

Had I come forward a little sooner, these programs would have been a little less entrenched, and those abusing them would have felt a little less familiar with and accustomed to the exercise of those powers. This is something we see in almost every sector of government, not just in the national security space, but it’s very important:

Once you grant the government some new power or authority, it becomes exponentially more difficult to roll it back. Regardless of how little value a program or power has been shown to have (such as the Section 215 dragnet interception of call records in the United States, which the government’s own investigation found never stopped a single imminent terrorist attack despite a decade of operation), once it’s a sunk cost, once dollars and reputations have been invested in it, it’s hard to peel that back.

Don’t let it happen in your country.

masondog13: What’s the best way to make NSA spying an issue in the 2016 Presidential Election? It seems like while it was a big deal in 2013, ISIS and other events have put it on the back burner for now in the media and general public. What are your ideas for how to bring it back to the forefront?

    Snowden:

This is a good question, and there are some good traditional answers here. Organizing is important. Activism is important.

At the same time, we should remember that governments don’t often reform themselves. One of the arguments in a book I read recently (Bruce Schneier, “Data and Goliath”), is that perfect enforcement of the law sounds like a good thing, but that may not always be the case. The end of crime sounds pretty compelling, right, so how can that be?

Well, when we look back on history, the progress of Western civilization and human rights is actually founded on the violation of law. America was of course born out of a violent revolution that was an outrageous treason against the crown and established order of the day. History shows that the righting of historical wrongs is often born from acts of unrepentant criminality. Slavery. The protection of persecuted Jews.

But even on less extremist topics, we can find similar examples. How about the prohibition of alcohol? Gay marriage? Marijuana?

Where would we be today if the government, enjoying powers of perfect surveillance and enforcement, had — entirely within the law — rounded up, imprisoned, and shamed all of these lawbreakers?

Ultimately, if people lose their willingness to recognize that there are times in our history when legality becomes distinct from morality, we aren’t just ceding control of our rights to government, but our agency in determing thour futures.

How does this relate to politics? Well, I suspect that governments today are more concerned with the loss of their ability to control and regulate the behavior of their citizens than they are with their citizens’ discontent.
How do we make that work for us? We can devise means, through the application and sophistication of science, to remind governments that if they will not be responsible stewards of our rights, we the people will implement systems that provide for a means of not just enforcing our rights, but removing from governments the ability to interfere with those rights.

You can see the beginnings of this dynamic today in the statements of government officials complaining about the adoption of encryption by major technology providers. The idea here isn’t to fling ourselves into anarchy and do away with government, but to remind the government that there must always be a balance of power between the governing and the governed, and that as the progress of science increasingly empowers communities and individuals, there will be more and more areas of our lives where — if government insists on behaving poorly and with a callous disregard for the citizen — we can find ways to reduce or remove their powers on a new — and permanent — basis.

Our rights are not granted by governments. They are inherent to our nature. But it’s entirely the opposite for governments: their privileges are precisely equal to only those which we suffer them to enjoy.

We haven’t had to think about that much in the last few decades because quality of life has been increasing across almost all measures in a significant way, and that has led to a comfortable complacency. But here and there throughout history, we’ll occasionally come across these periods where governments think more about what they “can” do rather than what they “should” do, and what is lawful will become increasingly distinct from what is moral.

In such times, we’d do well to remember that at the end of the day, the law doesn’t defend us; we defend the law. And when it becomes contrary to our morals, we have both the right and the responsibility to rebalance it toward just ends.

cahaseler: We’ve now known about the scary stuff happening at the NSA for quite some time. And yet from what I’ve seen, there’s been no real effort to stop it.
What are your thoughts on what we, as regular citizens, can do now?

Snowden: One of the biggest problems in governance today is the difficulty faced by citizens looking to hold officials to account when they cross the line. We can develop new tools and traditions to protect our rights, and we can do our best to elect new and better representatives, but if we cannot enforce consequences on powerful officials for abusive behavior, we end up in a system where the incentives reward bad behavior post-election.

That’s how we end up with candidates who say one thing but, once in power, do something radically different. How do you fix that? Good question.

moizsyed: How did you guys feel about about Neil Patrick Harris’ “for some treason” joke last night?

Snowden: Wow the questions really blew up on this one. Let me start digging in…

To be honest, I laughed at NPH. I don’t think it was meant as a political statement, but even if it was, that’s not so bad. My perspective is if you’re not willing to be called a few names to help out your country, you don’t care enough.

“If this be treason, then let us make the most of it.”

LegalNerd1940: What validation do we have that Putin is being honest about NOT spying in Russia?

Snowden: To tag on to the Putin question: There’s not, and that’s part of the problem world-wide. We can’t just reform the laws in one country, wipe our hands, and call it a day. We have to ensure that our rights aren’t just being protected by letters on a sheet of paper somewhere, or those protections will evaporate the minute our communications get routed across a border. The only way to ensure the human rights of citizens around the world are being respected in the digital realm is to enforce them through systems and standards rather than policies and procedures.

boingeh: Don’t you find it kind of depressing how little the world was actually moved by the revelations? I do. For a few days at a time it was the biggest news story ever but barely anything has changed and people are still using Google, Apple et al. in the same ways. The news in general is just so transient, watching the documentary just brought it all back. It felt like it might actually amount to something but as far as I can tell, even with the courts recently ruling that GCHQs actions were illegal for many years and NSAs whole program amounting to nothing, no significant legislation has passed and for all we know they are still rapidly expanding their programs.

Snowden: To dogpile on to this, many of the changes that are happening are invisible because they’re happening at the engineering level. Google encrypted the backhaul communications between their data centers to prevent passive monitoring. Apple was the first forward with an FDE-by-default smartphone (kudos!). Grad students around the world are trying to come up with ways to solve the metadata problem (the opportunity to monitor everyone’s associations — who you talk to, who you sleep with, who you vote for — even in encrypted communications).

The biggest change has been in awareness. Before 2013, if you said the NSA was making records of everybody’s phonecalls and the GCHQ was monitoring lawyers and journalists, people raised eyebrows and called you a conspiracy theorist.

Those days are over. Facts allow us to stop speculating and start building, and that’s the foundation we need to fix the internet. We just happened to be the generation stuck with fighting these fires.

ba_dumtshhh: First, congrats to the Oscar! Mr. Snowden, what do you think about the latest News, kaspersky broke? I understand they don’t talk about victims and aggressors because it’s their business model. But do you think they should name the nsa as an aggressor when they now about?

Snowden: The Kaspersky report on the “Equation Group” (they appear to have stopped short of naming them specifically as NSA, although authorship is clear) was significant, but I think more significant is the recent report on the joint UK-UK hacking of Gemalto, a Dutch company that produces critical infrastructure used around the world, including here at home.

Why? Well, although firmware exploitation is nasty, it’s at least theoretically reparable: tools could plausibly be created to detect the bad firmware hashes and re-flash good ones. This isn’t the same for SIMs, which are flashed at the factory and never touched again. When the NSA and GCHQ compromised the security of potentially billions of phones (3g/4g encryption relies on the shared secret resident on the sim), they not only screwed the manufacturer, they screwed all of us, because the only way to address the security compromise is to recall and replace every SIM sold by Gemalto.

Our governments – particular the security branches – should never be weighing the equities in an intelligence gathering operation such that a temporary benefit to surveillance regarding a few key targets is seen as more desireable than protecting the communications of a global system (and this goes double when we are more reliant on communications and technology for our economy productivity than our adversaries).

  • Bette Midler Calls Ariana Grande’s Sexy Image Ridiculous

Bette Midler is not impressed with pop singer Ariana Grande, and isn’t afraid to say so.

While speaking to the U.K.’s The Telegraph, Midler slammed female singers, specifically Grande’s AMA performance on Sunday, for using sex to sell their albums.

“It’s always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch looking so ridiculous,” the 68-year-old singer/actress told the publication.

Grande, who made a name for herself as a Disney Channel star in the original series Sam and Cat, performed at this year’s AMA awards, and her performance was full of sex appeal that did not sit well with Midler, who said she looked “silly beyond belief.”

“I mean, it’s silly beyond belief and I don’t know who’s telling her to do it,” Midler added. “I wish they’d stop. But it’s not my business, I’m not her mother. Or her manager. Maybe they tell them that’s what you’ve got to do. Sex sells. Sex has always sold.”

“Apparently people really like to pretend they’re having sex,” Midler continued. “They really like to slap each other’s butts. I mean, don’t ask me. It’s beyond me. I’m too old. I don’t know what the end game is going to be. I don’t know where you go from all that sex in your 20s. I don’t know how you sustain it.”

Midler has some advice for the young girls in the entertainment industry: “Trust your talent. You don’t have to make a whore out of yourself to get ahead. You really don’t.”

  • Selena Gomez Cries Onstage During AMAs

Selena Gomez couldn’t hold back her emotions during her performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants” at the American Music Awards on Sunday night, breaking down in tears before the song was over.

The 22-year old singer–and on-again/off again girlfriend of Justin Bieber–wowed the crowd in a long, peachy gown that showed off a lot of leg as she shared her very personal song with the audience. According to HollywoodLife.com, Selena had a feeling she was going to get emotional before the show even started, due to the nature of the song and the fact that the awards show holds history for her and Bieber.

“This weekend is going to be a big test, if she can hold out and not see him. They have a lot of history with this show, a lot of memories. The AMAs have brought them back together before so her friends are wondering if it will happen again,” a source told the site.

The song, off her new album For You, reportedly has Bieber’s approval; Gomez told Ryan Seacrest recently that he’d heard it and loved it, despite the heartbreaking subject matter. But for Gomez, the music is about more than just the two of them.

“He thought it was beautiful. I think it was really hard. I think he was a little jealous of the video guy at first. Honestly, music is an expression, and if you will be that voice for these girls, there are some people that feel this. This is universal,” she said.

  • Meghan Trainor: All About Kim Kardashian’s Nude Butt

Meghan Trainor is ‘All About That Bass,’ but at the American Music Awards on Sunday she was all about Kim Kardashian’s butt. The singer walked the red carpet at the AMA’s, and was asked about the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star’s recent debut of her slick-up nude butt on the cover of Paper magazine.

“She has an amazing butt!” Trainor said to E! host Guiliana Rancic. “If I had a booty like that, I don’t know if I’d post it. But she looked bomb.”

Kim Kardashian and Paper set out to #BreaktheInternet with her shiny derriere, but fell short on their goal. Meghan Trainor didn’t fall short on hers, however. She was thrilled to receive her very first American Music Awards nomination for New Artist of the Year, and even though she didn’t win, saw the nomination as a huge boost to her career.

Meghan looked classy in her black peekaboo lace dress by Ted Baker that aptly highlighted her hourglass shape. Bow-topped heels and a bedazzled clutch in the shape of a red smooch completed were the perfect finishing pieces to her ensemble.

PerezHilton.com , on the other hand, reports that Meghan Trainor’s AMA’s look was boring. Perez felt she lacked glamour.

“Sure, she grabbed a crystal-covered lip clutch for a little wow factor, but it didn’t mesh with the rest of her ensem,” he wrote.

Meghan Trainor broke out on the music scene in a big way with her body-loving hit, “All About That Bass.” Her latest release, “Lips Are Movin’,” is destined for the top of the pop charts as well. What did you think of her look on the red carpet at the American Music Awards? And since when did any little black dress lack glamour?

  • Reddit Launches iPhone App Just For AMAs

Reddit Launches iPhone App Just For AMAs

Reddit announced the launch of the reddit AMA (as me anything) app for iOS – an app built specifically for the popular Q&As that frequently take place on the site.

AMAs have been around for about eight years, and have only grown in popularity in that time. These days, celebrities and interesting people engage in them all the time, and often get news coverage for their answers. Reddit says on its blog:

“AMAs get a lot of attention outside of reddit, and often you’ll see “Top 10 answers or moments to [insert name of celebrity or person]’s AMA.” While those recaps may be good for those who cannot follow AMAs as they happen live, there is so much more to AMAs that those brief excerpts cannot convey. One of the best parts of AMAs is experiencing the complete spectrum of questions and answers with full context.”

“With this app, we want to share more about what reddit is all about, so people can find and enjoy a wider variety of AMAs as they are happening.”

As the company notes, some of the most popular AMAs are by “people who are doing everyday jobs”. Examples given include a flight attendant for a top airline, a vacuum cleaner repair technician, and the guy who kicks people out of Alamo Drafthouse movie theaters for texting or talking.

Reddit has also built out its OAuth API to encourage developers to use its data in their own apps.

An Android version of the AMA apps in on the way. It already exists in beta.

  • Taylor Swift Wins Big, Avoids Awkward Moment At AMAs

Taylor Swift has the unique distinction of being both a pop/country superstar and the ex-girlfriend of more celebrities than I can count on both hands. Naturally, there’s going to be some awkwardness at awards shows, when everyone shows up and are forced to sit in the same room together.

But Swift–who won big at the American Music Awards this year–managed to keep the awkwardness to a minimum by avoiding ex Harry Styles and One Direction the entire night, making a point to steer clear of them even while chatting with several other stars and dancing along with the performances by Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry. She did, however, walk by the band a couple of times on her way back to her seat, but reportedly never even looked their way.

Swift has had ill-fated romances with several stars in and out of the music world, and said in a recent issue of New York Magazine that she spoke with one ex about her album “Red” when he realized most of it was about him.

“He was like, ‘I just listened to the album, and that was a really bittersweet experience for me. It was like going through a photo album.’ That was nice. Nicer than, like, the ranting, crazy e-mails I got from this one dude,” she said.

Swift won four awards at the show, including Artist of the Year, and took the podium to address the crowd, saying she was amazed at what her fans had done for her.

“‘Red’ is very different than any album I’ve made before and the reason I was able to do that was because of the fans,” Swift said. “I cannot believe what you’ve done in the last year. This album came out almost exactly a year ago and the fact that 6 million of you went out and bought it is crazy.”

  • Celia Cruz Honored by JLO at AMAs

The American Music Awards in Los Angeles brought viewers countless performances to excite and entertain. At the top of the list, many are commenting on the dance (and singing) number Jennifer Lopez gave as an ode to the talented salsa icon, Celia Cruz. Known as the “Queen of Salsa” Cruz contributed to the music world until her death in 2003, after suffering from brain cancer. The singer was recognized for her talents through many awards including three Latin Grammys and even two Grammys.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Jennifer Lopez spoke about her tribute to the famous salsa legend. “I felt very honored and a little scared, I don’t think there is anything better for this year’s AMA. I know that a lot of fans who will watch the show will know who she was, but we will also educate a lot of people reminding them of the impact she had in the music scene, not just in Latin American countries, but also in the United States.”

Lopez spoke about the “impact” Cruz had on the musical world; however, the vast amount is almost incomprehensible. Cruz released 78 albums. Yes, that is correct. 78 albums. Cruz’s larger-than-life, vibrant, and colorful costumes are remembered as components of her iconic image. The salsa star previously had a postage stamp designed in her honor as well as being the subject of a Smithsonian Museum exhibit. Most recently, Cruz was the center of a Google-Doodle.

As amazing as the tribute Jennifer Lopez was, the real icon had a unique way of rhythmically enjoying her time on stage regardless of what stage she graced.

  • Rihanna Given Icon Award By Her Mom

Rihanna was awarded a top honor at Sunday night’s AMAs, and it was given to her by none other than her mom, who was credited with starting the pop star’s career.

“Rihanna, I am so proud of you tonight,” Monica Fenty said. “I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud you and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused. It’s amazing how you always manage to take good from all your experiences. I am so blessed to be a part of this historic moment.”

While “humble” may not be a word usually attributed to Rihanna, the crowd seemed to be in agreement as she took the stage with a small orchestra to perform her hit “Diamonds”, from her 2012 album “Unapologetic”.

“About 20 years ago is when I first started making your life a living hell with my annoying like husky ‘man voice,’ you would call it,” Rihanna said with a look at her mom. “I literally begged and pleaded and she finally said yes. And I thank you and we all thank you for that ‘yes’, because that was the beginning of it all.”

Justin Timberlake and Miley Cyrus also performed at last night’s show, making headlines of their own with their performances.

  • Macklemore Recognizes Racial Injustice In Speech

Music duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis wowed the crowd Sunday night at the AMAs when they accepted the award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop album. The pair’s album, entitled, The Heist, was released on October 9, 2012.

Due to their schedule, which included a a stop in Miami during the AMAs, the artists’ accepted their award by satellite.

In his now-famous acceptance speech, Macklemore began with the Martin Luther King, Jr. quote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere…”

After his opening, Macklemore went on to comment on both Trayvon Martin and the trial of his killer, George Zimmerman.

  • Katy Perry AMAs Performance Dubbed as Racist?

All artists push the envelope of what society considers acceptable at least one time or another in their career. Now, singer Katy Perry is making headlines for doing just that after her controversial performance at the American Music Awards. The platinum-selling singer performed her latest single, “Unconditionally,” from her album Prism, which as released Oct. 18.

While the song itself has become quite popular, skyrocketing to the Top 10 on the Billboard Pop chart, last night’s performance may have slightly snubbed the song. Perry, who was also the opening act for the AMAs, chose to dress as a geisha for the performance. Adorned in a pink kimono with distinctive and bold eye make-up, the singer definitely resembled the likes of a traditional geisha. She even tailored her choreographed routine to include traditional dance associated with the custom.

For those who aren’t fully aware of what the title geisha is, here the gist: A geisha is categorized as a traditional Japanese female entertainer. They typically serve as a hostess for parties or events, and possess skills of various Japanese performing arts. Of course, the arts include classical music, along with dance and games.

However, that’s exactly the crux of the problem. The 29-year-old singer isn’t quite Japanese, and she isn’t exactly the type of singer who falls into the classical category. So, her geisha attire basically rubbed a lot of fans the wrong way. In a nutshell, some found it downright disrespectful and racist. Although, its safe to say that most likely wasn’t her intent, some have accused the “Fireworks” singer of ‘appropriating Asian culture,’ and ‘mocking custom,’ reports Mirror UK.

A number of fans took to Twitter under the AMA hash-tag to express their disdain for the ‘Roar’ singer’s performance. Unfortunately, the remarks were quite harsh toward Perry.

Although Perry tweeted fans forewarning them that she’d be ‘taking them on a trip,’ she mostly like didn’t see her actions as offensive. Perry recently stated that she had some familiarity with the culture and customs after her family gave shelter to Japanese lodgers when she was younger. However, some fans, bloggers and critics collectively feel that still wasn’t enough to justify her performance.

Perry’s camp hasn’t responded to the allegations as of yet.

  • Katy Perry Sparks Debate With Geisha Costume at AMAs

Katy Perry is making headlines again, this time for her attire at Sunday night’s AMAs. The starlet opened the awards ceremony performing her latest single, “Unconditionally,” and wearing a traditional Geisha-inspired dress.

Now, Perry has sparked debate with the traditional Japanese Geisha costume in which she appeared. Perry is no stranger to controversy and her love for bizarre costumes. She has sported a blue bob haircut in recent years, and appeared in a dress designed to look like candy during her California Dreams tour.

According to various sources, Perry stated that she wanted to really push the envelope with her performance, which she ultimately accomplished. Katy recently tweeted a “hint” to fans as to what her “theme” would be at the AMAs.

Immediately following Perry’s Geisha act, a Twitter debate began, with fans and viewers calling the singer “racist” for donning the Japanese dress.

  • Macklemore Acknowledges Trayvon Martin In AMAs Speech

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis tuned in via satellite to the American Music Awards on Sunday to perform and accept their awards for favorite rap/hip hop artist and favorite rap/hip hop album, and because they did it from Miami, Macklemore took the opportunity to speak out against racial profiling and acknowledge slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin, whose killer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted earlier this year but has since been arrested several times for violent incidents.

“I was talking to my friend … before the show and he reminded me of a great Martin Luther King quote — ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it,” said Macklemore. “This is really happening. These are our friends, our neighbors, our peers and our fans, and it’s time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it.”

The duo shot to stardom earlier this year with their hit “Thrift Shop” and often include messages of tolerance in their songs, including acceptance of alternative lifestyles. As for George Zimmerman, he posted $9,000 bail last Tuesday and now awaits a January court date when he’ll be sentenced for a domestic incident in which he allegedly threatened his pregnant girlfriend with a shotgun. She claims he also choked her about a week before that incident, which prompted the judge to order a higher bail amount than what was requested by the defense.

  • Ariana Grande American Music Awards Performance Earns High Praise

Ariana Grande might have been the woman of the night at the 2013 American Music Awards last night.

Grande followed One Direction onto stage at the Nokia Theatre Sunday night to perform selections from her Yours Truly album. She started with a very short a cappella taste of “Baby I” then led immediately into “Tattooed Heart.” The performance was stripped down and minimalist, effectively showcasing Grande’s extraordinary voice.

The performance earned her enthusiastic praise from the audience, including standing ovations from Lady Gaga and Ciara.

Grande’s dress garnered nearly as much attention as her performance itself. The simple, curve-hugging strapless red sequined Dolce and Gabbana gown earned a few Jessica Rabbit references.

Grande topped off her night by nabbing the coveted New Artist of the Year Award. Other nominees for the award included Florida Georgia Line, Imagine Dragons, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and Phillip Phillips.

She pulled her acceptance speech out of her bodice, explaining that her mother had written the script: “My mom made me this thing and I have it in here so that I don’t forget anybody.”

Grande gushed to fans on Twitter:

Grande’s fans celebrated with her via Twitter, and are rallying around the performer now in hopes that she’ll win the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Breakout Artist.

  • Bob Odenkirk Talks Rumored ‘Breaking Bad’ Spin-Off About Saul Goodman

Bob Odenkirk Talks Rumored ‘Breaking Bad’ Spin-Off About Saul Goodman

As previously reported, actors/comedians David Cross, Bob Odenkirk and Brian Posehn did a reddit AMA (ask me anything) today answering numerous questions from fans.

We talked about HBO’s GO’s lack of Mr. Show here, but another interesting bit to come out of the conversation was what Odenkirk had to say about the rumored Breaking Bad spin-off about his character Saul Goodman.

Saul spin-off? Don’t know. Really. I trust Vince Gilligan when he says he has a good idea for it, an idea that motivates him to want to work on it. Vince, obviously, can do anything he chooses at this point, so it’s a massive honor that he would put any mental effort into a Saul show. Peter Gould is a Breaking Bad writer who wrote the first script that Saul appeared in, and, I believe, Peter is interested in a possible Saul show. So…that’s a lot of goodwill and energy making it a possibility. But still, this is a creative endeavor we’re talking about, and then there’s the business side that would have to be worked out…so many hurdles. I am thrilled that people like the character enough to want that show to happen.

Hopefully if it happens, they have a back-up plan for Saul’s hair. This was Odenkirk’s response to another question about that:

That hair is not mine, it is five different components / pieces that get put into my head. I do not have it at home, the Smithsonian has it next to Fonzie’s jacket and Rerun’s turd from “What’s Happenin’” the episode where the toilet breaks.

Read the full AMA here. There are plenty of other topics discussed. Cross didn’t have much to share on what’s going on with Arrested Development, by the way.

In related news, there’s a Breaking Bad Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set coming out, and one of the bonus features is:

A Criminal Attorney: Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman -A look at the character Saul Goodman and the man who played him, Bob Odenkirk.
