Caroll Spinney: Big Bird Shares Heartbreaking Story During Reddit AMA

Caroll Spinney, a man who’s played a big part of many kids’ lives, recently shared one of the most heartbreaking stories you’ll read on the internet.

For the last 46 years, Spinney has made Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch come alive on Sesame Street. He sat down this week for a reddit AMA, in which a users asked him what has been his most meaningful interaction with a child.

    Grab your tissues:

    Okay, here’s one.

This is a very sad story, but it’s real.

I got a letter from a fan who said his little boy, who was 5 years old, his name was Joey, he was dying of cancer.

And he was so ill, the little boy knew he was dying.

So the man, in his letter, asked if I would call the little boy. He said the only thing that cheered him at all in his fading state was to see Big Bird on television.

So once in a while, he wouldn’t see Big Bird on some days, because he wasn’t necessarily in every show. So he asked could I telephone him, and talk to the boy, tell him what a good boy he’s been.

So I took a while to look up a phone, because this was before cell phones. And they got a long cord to bring a phone to the boy.

And I had Big Bird say “Hello! Hello Joey! It’s me, Big Bird!”

So he said “Is it really you, Big Bird?”

    “Yes, it is.”

I chatted a while with him, about ten minutes, and he said “I’m glad you’re my friend Big Bird.”

And I said “I’d better let you go now.”

He said “Thank you for calling me Big Bird. You’re my friend. You make me happy.”

And it turns out that his father and mother were sitting with him when the phone call came. And he was very, very ill that day.

And they called the parents in, because they weren’t sure how long he’d last.

And so his father wrote to me right away, and said “Thank you, thank you” – he hadn’t seen him smile since October, and this was in March – and when the phone was hung up, he said “Big Bird called me! He’s my friend.”

And he closed his eyes. And he passed away.

And I could see that what I say to children can be very important.

And he said “We haven’t seen our little boy smile in MONTHS. He smiled, as he passed away. It was a gift to us. Thank you.”

Spinney also shared his thoughts on Big Bird’s “controversial” appearance on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Well, see – other people make arguments in favor of us being totally honest, that does not fit with my feeling of the joy of being a little child. I’ve seen a child discover me – we thought we were alone in a park, filming a scene outdoors on some great stretches of rock, we had to do a shot for a China film – and a little boy came along, and he saw me take Big Bird off! And he screamed, and cried, and I said “Quick!” – he looked so funny with his little legs, running away, crying and crying – and I chased after him, with the costume back on- and I said “Little boy, I’m okay” and he said “I thought that man was hurting you, Big Bird.”

When children see that Big Bird – Mr. Rogers wanted me to lift the puppet which is so big I have to get inside, off – it’s a series of hoops that create the shape of Big Bird, and then there’s netting and feathers, they’re all real feathers so he looks nice and real – we found out that children would NOT have liked seeing Big Bird take it off on Mr. Rogers. I said “I’m sorry, I can’t do that!” Jim Henson didn’t want me to do it either.

So we made a compromise with Mr. Rogers.

And that was that I would just go to the Make-Believe Land, and say “OK, this is Make-Believe” and have some other puppeteers – a good friend of mine, Bob Brown, would show how HIS puppets worked – little marionettes on strings – they don’t look so real anyway, like Big Bird did to little kids.

We’re not trying to fool them, we’re just trying to entertain them, and let them know that their friend Big Bird is not just a man in a giant suit.

  • Mila Kunis’ Revealing Reddit AMA

    Mila Kunis’ Revealing Reddit AMA

Mila Kunis, like so many stars before her, took to Reddit’s AMA (Ask Me Anything) social outlet to let her fans in on what’s going on in her life.

We love AMA. We can’t get enough. It’s a personal conversation with the people you admire, and not filtered through media.

Mila Kunis was accomodating and amazingly revealing about her life, past and present during her session.

As far as her present, Mila Kunis is obviously focusing on her four-month-old daughter, Wyatt.

“It is the most life-changing experience you can have,” Mila said when asked how becoming a mother has affected her.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMDjGEDZSRs

“I am proud to be a stay-at-home mom. I have no desire to be in front of the camera. I find her to be the most challenging job I’ve had. The amount of love that you have, the type of love that you have, changes. The way you look at the world changes… everything has changed, because of her.”

Mila Kunis admitted that she has become more conscious of the world around her and how she can improve it for her daughter. She said, “I want an eco-friendly car, I want to compost everything, because I want the world to be better for her. And you have the opportunity to make a really great child for the world.”

Mila Kunis also talked about kissing Natalie Portman and noted that her and Ashton had both kissed her!

That’s weird thing to imagine for a couple.

Mila Kunis also used to be a pretty serious gamer with impressive experience.

When Mila Kunis was asked about being a vocal fan of the MMORPG World of Warcraft, she said, “I have not played WOW in probably 5 years! I used to play. I played a LOT. I was in a guild, I led raids, I was a pretty badass mage. I had multiple characters. I was a frostmage, I think, by the time I stopped playing… I was level 70.”

Amazing! That is why we love Mila Kunis and AMA.

What do you think was the most interesting thing to come out of Mila Kunis’ AMA?

  • Bill Gates Is Concerned About the Rise of the Machines, and Why the Hell Aren’t You?

Bill Gates Is Concerned About the Rise of the Machines, and Why the Hell Aren’t You?

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, who knows a thing or two about technology, is concerned about the day when our artificial intelligence gets a little too smart for its own good and decides it probably doesn’t have to listen to the dumb humans anymore.

Also, why aren’t you concerned?, he wonders.

Gates hosted a reddit AMA on Wednesday, and was asked about the “existential threat” of machine superintelligence. His answer? Hell yeah it’s a issue.

“I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don’t understand why some people are not concerned,” said Gates.

As of late, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has been the most outspoken rich tech dude when it comes to the dangers of AI. He recently called for extensive research to make sure AI doesn’t kill us all, and even make a huge donation to the cause. In the past, he’s said things like …

We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes.

    and

You have no idea how fast [AI] is growing at a pace close to exponential. The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most. This is not a case of crying wolf about something I don’t understand.

Gates also had this to say during his AMA:

“There will be more progress in the next 30 years than ever. Even in the next 10 problems like vision and speech understanding and translation will be very good. Mechanical robot tasks like picking fruit or moving a hospital patient will be solved. Once computers/robots get to a level of capability where seeing and moving is easy for them then they will be used very extensively.”

    Oh goody.

  • Elon Musk to Host Reddit AMA with Focus on Ocean Rocket Landing

Elon Musk to Host Reddit AMA with Focus on Ocean Rocket Landing

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 6, Elon Musk’s SpaceX will attempt to land a rocket on a platform that floating in the Atlantic Ocean. No big deal.

And if you want to ask Mr. Musk about that, or presumably anything else about which you’re curious (and there should be a lot), then you should head over to reddit a little before 9pm EST for an AMA session.

According to Space.com, “the California-based private spaceflight company will try to land the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket on a floating platform in the Atlantic Ocean, shortly after the booster launches SpaceX’s robotic Dragon cargo capsule from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 6:20 a.m. EST.”

And according to SpaceX, the chances of this happening according to plan is about 50/50.

“Returning anything from space is a challenge, but returning a Falcon 9 first stage for a precision landing presents a number of additional hurdles. At 14 stories tall and traveling upwards of 1300 m/s (nearly 1 mi/s), stabilizing the Falcon 9 first stage for reentry is like trying to balance a rubber broomstick on your hand in the middle of a wind storm,” says the company.

Although Musk says the AMA will be focused on the rocket launch, reddit AMAs tend to meander about. If I were you, I’d get in a question or two about Skynet. I think he’ll bite on those.

  • Christina Milian Breaks it Down at the AMA’s

At the 2014 American Music Awards Sunday evening, actress and singer/songwriter Christina Milian turned heads as she performed a song called “Start a Fire” with rapper and sizzurp enthusiast Lil Wayne.

The duo, who are rumored to be dating, displayed their chemistry during their live performance, and Milian told E! News a few days beforehand, “Wayne is premiering his single and there’s a lot that falls on this because his album is about to come out, the world is going to hear his single for the first time.” Milian added, “I have the honor of being on the record, and actually brought the record to him which is really cool.”

Milian remarked, “I think with the two of us on that stage, there will be fireworks and it will be awesome. We have to really start a fire.”

Here is a rough copy of “Start a Fire”:

Milain’s primary Instagram photo features her alongside Wayne, which suggests their collaboration goes beyond musical ventures:

Milian, who had her first child, daughter Violet, with rapper The-Dream back in July of 2010, commented on her return to the spotlight. “It’s me, my family and basically our journey of life. We are a crazy fun Cuban family and me and my journey of coming back to my music career too,” Milain explained.

Milian, 33, was signed to Def Jam Records at the age of 19, and achieved Top 40 hit singles with the tracks “AM to PM” and “When You Look at Me.”

In related news, Lil Wayne is plainly an enchanted being:

  • Meghan Trainor Talks Kim Kardashian’s Butt, Her Search For a Guy and … Her Brother’s Inhaler?

Meghan Trainor is a single gal, but is on the prowl for a new guy in her life.

“Come on guys! Look how good I’m looking today,” the All About That Bass singer told Giuliana Rancic and Terrence Jenkins of E! News on the red carpet at Sunday’s 2014 American Music Awards in L.A. “What’s going on?”

The breakout artist of 2015 said she loves to “cuddle [and] make music. You can make music or not, that’s fine, whatever,” said Trainor. “But also be real cool and make me laugh. That’s it. That’s all you gotta do.”

Trainor assured Rancic and Jenkins that she would use one of her greatest attributes to woo her man — her songwriting.

“I’ll like write them songs too—nice ones,” she gushed. “It would be like really cool and cute and adorable.”

Trainor showed up on the AMA red carpet looking gorgeous in a black Ted Baker dress, featuring lace sleeves.

“I wanted to go classy and comfortable,” she said of the outfit. “I always want to be comfortable. I love this dress.”

The Lips Are Movin’ singer’s fashion ensemble also came with a unique, red-lip clutch, which held an essential item — her brother’s inhaler.

Trainor also shared her thoughts about fellow curvy-girl Kim Kardashian and her nude Paper magazine cover.

“Oh my god, she has an amazing butt!” Trainor said. “It’s awesome. If I had a booty like that, I don’t know if I would post it, but she looked bomb. There ain’t nothing wrong with that. It’s a nice butt.”

  • Ebola Virus Expert Answers Questions on Reddit

Ebola Virus Expert Answers Questions on Reddit

Richard Preston is the author of the non-fiction book “The Hot Zone”, which discusses the origins of several deadly viral diseases in Africa. He is an expert on viruses such as Ebola. His book offered a vision of these viruses that was so terrifying that Stephen King once said the first chapter of the book was “one of the most horrifying things I’ve read in my whole life.” That’s high praise from the man who wrote “The Stand”.

Preston took to the Interwebs and launched a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) discussion about the current Ebola crisis in Africa. As usual, the questions from the denizens of Reddit ranged from insightful and probing to absurd. But Preston held on and helped folks learn a thing or two.

One of the top questions from the discussion was about how doctors and nurses protect themselves while helping virus-stricken areas.

“They haven’t been able to fully protect themselves, Preston replied. “Doctors and nurses are dying. They’re wearing full protection biohazard suits, but the Ebola wards are just horrifying, 30 Ebola patients with one doctor and one nurse, both in space suits. Conditions are awful in those wards, we need more doctors and nurses – not even a space suit can totally protect you if the ward is really a mess.”

Another reader asked about an experimental serum that is being tried. Preston is hopeful that it will work. He said, “The antibody serum ZMAPP seems to be amazingly effective but we don’t know because it’s only been tried on the two patients.”

His comments about the future quality of life for people who manage to survive Ebola was encouraging.

“I interviewed Dr. Shem Musoke who nearly died of Marburg (close cousin of Ebola),” Preston explained. “And he told me it took him about a year to recover fully but now he was fine. It’s a crushing disease but if you survive you do recover.”

Finally, Preston assured everyone that there is no need to panic about the Ebola situation in Africa.

“This is a kind of war with a non-human enemy. It is a fairly clever and very aggressive enemy. However, if you are in a jam it is never a good idea to panic. That’s how you lose. The doctors in Africa definitely are not panicking, they are just working 20 hours a day in the fight. And we sure don’t have to panic in the US, we’ve got a strong medical care system.”

  • Marijuana Legalization AMA: NY Times in the Hotseat

Marijuana Legalization AMA: NY Times in the Hotseat

Andrew Rosenthal, the editorial page editor of The New York Times, along with David Firestone and Juliet Lapidos, who contributed to a series of New York Times editorials calling on the federal government to lift the ban on marijuana, conducted a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) today. Though they briefly fielded a handful of other topics, they were there specifically to talk pot.

The Times’ editorial series on legalization has drawn a lot of attention. An endorsement of this kind carries a lot of weight and lends an air of respectability to an issue that many people had heretofore seen as just for stoners.

Rosenthal told Reddit participants that, “The editorial board decided to make the call after considering the high social costs, and general absurdity, of the ban — which is still based on the classification of weed as a Schedule 1 substance, like heroin and LSD. The series, which considered health, politics, history, criminal justice, and the experience in Colorado with legalization, led to a vigorous and fascinating conversation among readers on the Times site.”

The array of questions posed to the Times’ folks was in keeping with the usual no-holds-barred probing from Redditors. There were jokesters, but there were some hard-hitting interrogatories too.

One of the topics that Redditors took the Times to task over was how their “legalize it” stance conflicts with the Times’ own drug testing policy.

User “MarijuanaMajority” asked: “Former Times executive editor Bill Keller said on Reddit earlier today that the Times endorsing marijuana legalization while at the same time drug testing journalists for marijuana is ‘increasingly difficult to defend,’ pointing out its ‘inconsistency.’ Do you agree with him and the nearly 5,000 people that have signed a petition asking the Times to end the practice of checking the content of reporters’ urine before they’re allowed to byline stories?”

The editors on the AMA had an answer: “The issue of drug testing is a matter of corporate policy, and I don’t make corporate policy, and neither does anyone else in the editorial department. I was asked about this the other day by Chris Hayes and I said that if they asked me, I would say we should stop testing for marijuana use, but that I’m not all that sure I will be asked.”

Getting politicians to talk about legalizing marijuana, whether for or against, is pretty tough. For most candidates, there is no good answer that will no lose them voters. Rosenthal was asked about that, as well.

“I think the candidates should be honest in saying what their views are. This is just not a third-rail issue anymore. I’m hoping that a serious candidate will in fact endorse the repeal of the federal ban on weed. If I were moderating a debate in 2016, assuming things go on like they are now, then I would certainly ask about it. With any luck, more progress will have been made on this issue by then.”

The editors were specific in saying that they were calling for a lift on the federal marijuana ban, leaving the issue up to the individual states. Whether or not the states should allow legalization may be a different matter.

“What we have called for is an end to the federal marijuana ban, which will allow states to decide for themselves, based on the very kind of value judgments that David [Brooks] made in his column, and in other places. David would agree with us that the federal ban should be ended. He would then go on to argue that states should not legalize recreational use. That is just the kind of debate we need to have about marijuana.

Finally, Rosenthal pulled back the curtain on the reasons why the Times is addressing this issue now.

“Perhaps the biggest motivation for doing this series, and making such a big deal out of it, is that prohibition repeal is a criminal justice and civil rights issue. The enforcement of marijuana laws has a heavily racist slant in this country. An African American is far more likely to be arrested for simple possession, put on trial, convicted and sent to prison. Righting this wrong is imperative. As a society we should never tolerate a situation in which young black men go to prison for doing some that well-off white people are doing with impunity.”

  • Harrison Ford Answers Questions on Star Wars, Indiana Jones in Reddit AMA

Harrison Ford Answers Questions on Star Wars, Indiana Jones in Reddit AMA

Actor Harrison Ford made a “Ask Me Anything” thread on Reddit yesterday, answering (and not answering) some of his fans’ most pervasive questions. Although the session only lasted one hour, Ford conveyed stories from the highlights of his career: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Blade Runner..

In regard to Star Wars, Ford explained that when he was offered the part “I realized this was another way of putting food on the table.” Since his job at the time had be carpentry and not acting, he was surprised about the offer and took it right away. He also explained that “of course” he would win in a fight with Star Wars co-start Mark Hamill. And when asked the famous ‘who shot first’ question (Gredo or Solo), Ford quickly deflected: “I don’t know and I don’t care.”

His role in the Indiana Jones franchise covered more ground in the AMA compared to Star Wars. Ford said the character was more fun to do “because of the places we went to and the adventures and the action. But Han Solo was also a huge part of my life.” His longest reply was in response to a question asking for a good story about making the Indiana Jones movies:

Oh, let’s see. On the first Indiana Jones movie, I tore an ACL in one of my knees, can’t remember which knee, the scene in which I was fighting the big German mechanic on an airplane called a flying wing, I was run over by the landing gear and injured my knee, but I can’t remember which one it was. Lots of bumps and injuries along the way.
Funny stories? We were shooting in Tunisia, and the script had a scene in which I fight a swordsman, an expert swordsman, it was meant to be the ultimate duel between sword and whip. And I was suffering from dysentery, really, found it inconvenient to be out of my trailer for more than 10 minutes at a time. We’d done a brief rehearsal of the scene the night before we were meant to shoot it, and both Steve and I realized it would take 2 or 3 days to shoot this. And it was the last thing we were meant to shoot in Tunisia before we left to shoot in England. And the scene before this in the film included a whip fight against 5 bad guys that were trying to kidnap Marian, so I thought it was a bit redundant. I was puzzling how to get out of this 3 days of shooting, so when I got to set I proposed to Steven that we just shoot the son a bitch and Steve said “I was thinking that as well.” So he drew his sword, the poor guy was a wonderful British stuntman who had practiced his sword skills for months in order to do this job, and was quite surprised by the idea that we would dispatch him in 5 minutes. But he flourished his sword, I pulled out my gun and shot him, and then we went back to England.

Unlike the character he played, Harrison Ford said that he actually likes snakes.

On Blade Runner Ford said he would love to work with Ridley Scott and revisit his character again if a sequel was made. When asked about whether he thought his character was a replicant or not he said “I think that it’s a wonderful storytelling mechanism for that question to be left unanswered,” adding “I love that people are still curious about it.”

Although he mentioned it in the AMA introduction, Ford only really got to answer one question regarding his latest project “Years of Living Dangerously”, which was a short plea on the importance of climate change. The miniseries focuses on character driven stories about people directly impacted on climate change. Show creator David Gelber told the LA Times “We didn’t want to do another competent documentary that would essentially preach to the choir and would be seen by a relatively small audience who already agreed this is a big deal.” James Cameron, who also works on the project, lent Ford his Twitter account to give proof for the AMA:

  • Martha Stewart Offers Best Sex Advice on Reddit

Martha Stewart Offers Best Sex Advice on Reddit

Reddit is like the Pinterest for men providing enormous amounts of random facts, stories, pictures and endless hours of entertainment.

Every so often Reddit dedicates a portion of their entertaining tactics to the ever-popular AMA’s. Not familiar? The AMA’s or “Ask Me Anything” category invites different people from interesting walks of life (celebs included) to an open forum where Reddit users can literally ask them anything.

The 72-year-old homemaker was asked some pretty interesting and rather hilarious questions. Unbelievably, Stewart answered them with grace and humbleness making her even more like-able.

Stewart even went as far as divulging some interesting sex advice.

When asked about her best sex tip she replied by saying, “Always take a bath before and after.”

    Yes. She did.

A fan responded with, “Do it DURING a bath. Kills two birds with one stone.” Stewart replied with, “That’s good too, and don’t forget to brush your teeth.”

And if you thought the prison talk wouldn’t come up, don’t fret-it did. When asked if she had a nickname in prison she replied with, “I think I did, but I can’t remember. …I don’t think about the past.”

“I would not EVER, EVER deface my body with tattoos,” she replied when asked if she got inked up while behind bars.

And perhaps the favorite question asked was about her unlikely friendship with Snoop Dogg.

“I wish I were closer friends with Snoop Dogg.”

The American Music Awards were full of entertainment this year, with one of the main highlights of the night being when Jennifer Lopez did a tribute performance to the “Queen of Salsa”, Celia Cruz.

Cruz was a Cuban singer and would have celebrated her 88th birthday on Monday. She recorded over 78 albums throughout her lifetime, and was honored with countless awards. • Rihanna Receives The AMA Icon Award

Although Rihanna is the one who was honored with the first ever prestigious Icon Award Sunday night at the American Music Awards, it was her mother who stole the show.

During the AMAs at the Nokie Theater in Los Angeles, Monica Fenty joined her daughter on the stage to present her with one of the highest honors of the night. However, before being presented the award, Rihanna took to the stage to perform her hit song, Diamonds.

“Rihanna, I am so proud of you tonight,” she said while holding hands with Rihanna. “I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud you and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused.” She continued, “It’s amazing how you always manage to take good from all your experiences. I am so blessed to be a part of this historic moment.”

“About 20 years ago is when I first started making your life a living hell with my annoying like husky ‘man voice,’ you would call it,” Rihanna said. She then proceeded to thank her mom for having faith in her music career and giving her the opportunity to live her dream. “I literally begged and pleaded and she finally said yes,” she said. “And I thank you and we all thank you for that yes because that was the beginning of it all.”

While accepting one of his three awards, Justin Timberlake talked about how “cute” Rihanna’s mom is and then told Rihanna that he is also proud of her.

“Can we talk about how cute Rihanna’s mom is?” Timberlake said. “She’s so proud of the Icon. I am too, Rihanna, I love you.”

  • Taylor Swift Is The Artist Of The Year

Taylor Swift Is The Artist Of The Year

Taylor Swift has had one of the most successful years in her music career this year. Not only did she release her top-selling album, Red, she also was awarded the Pinnacle Award during the CMA Awards and was awarded the American Music Awards artist of the year for the third time on Sunday night.

Swift also won the country album of the year for her hit album, Red, and favorite female country and pop/rock artist.

“‘Red’ is very different than any album I’ve made before and the reason I was able to do that was because of the fans,” Swift said. “I cannot believe what you’ve done in the last year. This album came out almost exactly a year ago and the fact that 6 million of you went out and bought it is crazy.”

Since its release in October 2012, Red has sold 3.8 million copies. Swift talked to Billboard backstage during the AMAs and said that her fifth album may be coming a lot sooner than expected.

“We got a lot already,” says Swift. “There are probably seven or eight [songs] that I know I want on the record. It’s really ahead of schedule for me. I’m just stoked because it’s already evolved into a new sound, and that’s all I wanted. And I would have taken two years to make that happen, but it just kind of happened naturally, so that’s all I could really ask for.”

  • Yelp CEO Addresses All Your Favorite Accusations On Reddit

Yelp CEO Addresses All Your Favorite Accusations On Reddit

Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman engaged in a reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) today, taking on an assault of questions about extortion, fake reviews, lawsuits, wages, and just about everything you’ve ever heard people allege about the company.

Not that he has any regrets about it. Someone actually asked him if he regretted doing the AMA, and he responded, “Absolutely not. I should have done it years ago, keep the questions coming!”

And keep them coming they did.

On claims that Yelp holds positive reviews hostage by not allowing them to be viewable, Stoppelman said, “There has never been any amount of money you could pay us to manipulate reviews. We do have an algorithm that highlights the most useful and reliable reviews on our site which is about 75% of contributed content. I started Yelp to solve my own need of finding a great doctor, obviously we needed to protect consumer(s) against fake reviews and spam to make sure the site is actually helpful (anyone remember CitySearch?). That’s why we pioneered the development of a review filter, a technology that other competitors like Google have since tried to mimic.”

“Despite the ‘Yelp extorts’ conspiracy meme, there’s never been a shred of actual ‘smoking gun’ evidence (phone call recording, email, etc.) to back up the claims,” he said in another comment.

In another, he said that no one in the Yelp Sales organization can write reviews.

When asked directly if Yelp calls businesses and offers to release good reviews and/or remove bad reviews for money, Stoppelman said, “Absolutely not. Consumer trust is paramount.”

When a user (going by handle Professional_Fart) replied with “Bullshit,” Stoppelman responded, “What part of that is bullshit?”

    Professional_Fart did not elaborate.

One user asked the interesting question: Are the reviewers on Yelp your customers or are they your product?

Stoppleman responded, “Internally we refer to the Yelp community as ‘the source’ (lifted from the newspaper world’s – protect your source) which means we must protect and nourish the community lest we lose everything. Without Yelpers there is no company.”

The AMA record also shows that Stoppelman had coffee, 2 eggs and half a cantaloupe for breakfast this morning. Read the rest of his conversation here.

Yelp released its quarterly earnings report last week with a 68% year-over-year increase in revenue. Cumulative reviews grew 42%, while average unique monthly visitors were up 41% at 117 million. Active local business accounts grew 61% to 57,200.

A new study has been released that claims men in the previously mentioned group may have a higher risk of heart attack or stroke. Testosterone therapy has been used to help counteract the aging process for men and improve weakening bone density, muscle mass, and sex drive.

For the study, Dr. Rebecca Vigen from the University of Texas and her team reviewed 9,000 patients who had recovered from a coronary angiography between 2005 and 2011. Testosterone therapy had been prescribed for 1,200 of the patients. The results showed that men within the hormone therapy group had a 30 percent increased risk of death, heart attack, or stroke as opposed to the group who did not use the hormone therapy.

According to Dr. Anne Cappola, who is an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the reason for using testosterone injections should be considered. The results of the study from (JAMA) the Journal of the American Medical Association, “make us take a pause, and make sure that everyone taking testosterone is taking it for the right reasons and is experiencing benefits.”

The outcome of the study does not suggest that nobody should use testosterone therapy, but rather that some men are potential candidates while others are not. The heavy marketing of products may mislead some patients into thinking this option is a necessary one because potential risks have eluded them. Physicians have advised against falling for the ploy, and recommend seeking consultation from your health provider before considering testosterone therapy.

“There’s a lot of marketing out there of testosterone and low-T syndrome, and a lot of men who want to feel better. So that marketing appeals to them, but they are not hearing any of the risks side, which is often harder to quantify,” Cappola said.

  • Healthcare Law, Is Everyone Ready For It?

Healthcare Law, Is Everyone Ready For It?

It’s rapidly approaching. That time when laws within the United States force a change in the healthcare payment structure. Are we all ready for it? What were the steps that led to this change?

President Obama shared his reasoning behind promoting an overhaul of the United States healthcare system. In a speech presented to the American Medical Association President Obama explained his decision to continue pressing for reform within the complex system. “The cost of our health care is a threat to our economy. It’s an escalating burden on our families and businesses. It’s a ticking time bomb for the federal budget. And it is unsustainable for the United States of America. If we fail to act, one out of every five dollars we earn will be spent on health care within a decade. So, to say it as plainly as I can, health care is the single most important thing we can do for America’s long-term fiscal health. That is a fact. That’s a fact,” President Obama said.

Regarding opposition to such a reform, the president claimed that the result for health care programs would eventually, “swamp our federal and state budgets, and impose a vicious choice of either unprecedented tax hikes, or overwhelming deficits, or drastic cuts in our federal and state budgets.”

The healthcare reform will begin on October 1st of this year where millions of uninsured Americans will have the opportunity to receive governmental subsidies in order to purchase health insurance. Though the possibility of technical glitches occurring is possible, the likely outcome of a complete shutdown is unlikely. According to Paul Van de Water from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, “The effects of a government shutdown on the implementation of the ACA (Affordable Care Act) are likely to be pretty small.”

Government officials are bracing for the activity next month by monitoring the Twitter account, Healthcare.gov and posting frequent updates.

Not everyone is convinced that his reform will do what is says. Many hope further improvements are on the horizon.

  • Lawrence Lessig Discusses Political Reform At Reddit

Lawrence Lessig Discusses Political Reform At Reddit

If you are a fan of either enjoying or creating YouTube mashups with content developed by another artist to your heart’s fair-use content, Lawrence Lessig is a person you should really be aware of. Lessig is, perhaps, the most credentialed and articulate individuals regarding the freedom of expression, especially the kind expression the Internet allows. Aside from being a professor at Harvard, the outspoken scholar is also the founder of Creative Commons, and is a renowned expert on issues regarding copyright and trademark laws. Aside from being a champion of creative entities like Girl Talk, Lessig is also something of a political watchdog who actively speaks out against the current climate of US politicians following the money when it comes to enacting policy.

The culmination of Lessig’s ideas concerning how to stem the tide of special interests groups–ones with deep pockets that are full of cash–was demonstrated during a recent TED Talk that focused on political corruption:

The next step in Lessig’s spread-the-word campaign was to conduct a Reddit AMA (ask me anything), that, as of this writing, is still going on. The decision to court Reddit’s audience is a wise on by Lessig, especially when you consider just how outspoken Reddit’s audience can be. For instance, if you don’t think the incredibly negative feedback from Reddit concerning the upcoming Xbox One didn’t influence Microsoft’s decision to eliminate many of DRM features that the outcry was focusing on, you probably aren’t keeping up.

Word of mouth is still a powerful tool, and underestimating the influence of one of the web’s most popular sites, a site that features an incredibly outspoken following, is foolish.

With that in mind, it makes perfect sense for Lessig to address a group that is largely comprised of like-minded individuals. Furthermore, Lessig was a huge supporter of the deceased Aaron Swartz. As indicated, the focus of Lessig’s visit was discussion surrounding how to combat corrupt politics.

    Some examples:

I see money in politics being a “chicken and the egg” problem. The legislators who would have to pass the law getting money out of politics are the legislators who got in place by being good gaming the “money in politics” system.
How the heck do you even START to address a problem this deeploy rooted? I imagine you acknowledge this issue, since the name of your organization is “root strikers.” Is there a practical step beyond “awareness” that can be taken?

lessig 24 points 50 minutes ago
Awareness is the gasoline. Spread it broadly, and a tiny spark can ignite change. (Hey, not so bad for on the fly…) And look at states where a similar change was made: Activists in Connecticut spent years pushing that issue, spreading awareness. And when the governor was convicted for corruption, change happened.

    And:

    pixelperfect3 21 points 58 minutes ago
You advocate in your book that congressmen should be paid much more than what they are right now (about $175,000/year). How much do you think they should be paid to make them lose the incentive to become a lobbyist? Does 250-300k sound better?

lessig 35 points 47 minutes ago
Oh please don’t out me on this. Ok, but DON’T TELL ANYONE I SAID THIS: They are lawmakers. Why aren’t they paid as much as a first year partner at a DC firm? In Singapore, gov’t ministers get paid $1 million a year. Where is corruption in Singapore. NO-where.

As indicated, the AMA looks like it is still active, with Lessig answering the following question about 4-5 minutes ago, Rbob48: “favorite cereal?” Lessig: “unprocessed oats.” There may still be time to get your questions in, if you hurry.

  • AMA: Obesity is a Disease, Remove Sugary Drinks From SNAP

The American Medical Association (AMA) this week held its annual meeting in Chicago, Illinois. The doctors attending the meeting have a large influence on the strategies medical professionals across the U.S. use to combat illnesses.

Of the many topics taken up at the meeting, one simple change in wording could have a greater effect on Americans than any other topic. The AMA this week adopted a policy recognizing obesity as a disease. The new definition will require, the AMA says, medical interventions to “advance obesity treatment and prevention.”

“Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue that affects approximately one in three Americans,” said Dr. Patrice Harris, AMA board member. “The AMA is committed to improving health outcomes and is working to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, which are often linked to obesity.”

In addition to the obesity issue, the AMA adopted policies on a wide range of medical topics. The AMA now officially supports a ban on marketing energy drinks to children and recognizes the health risks of prolonged sitting. The organization also opposes discrimination based on an individual’s genetic information and admitted the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association to the AMA’s House of Delegates.

On the final day of the meeting, the AMA waded into a controversial issue that has put personal freedoms and public health concerns at odds in New York City. The AMA adopted a policy supporting the removal of sugar-sweetened drinks from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is a U.S. Department of Agriculture service that offers food assistance to low income Americans.

“The AMA is working to improve the nation’s health care outcomes, particularly cardiovascular disease and diabetes, which are often linked to obesity,” said Dr. Ardis Hoven, AMA president. “Removing sugar-sweetened beverages from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will help encourage healthier beverage choices.”

  • Ex-Zynga Employee Reveals All In Reddit AMA

Ex-Zynga Employee Reveals All In Reddit AMA

As you’re probably aware of by now, Zynga laid off 520 employees this week. As part of that downsizing, a number of studios, including OMGPOP, were shut down. Now one ex-Zynga employee has taken to Reddit to answer any and all questions about the company.

The former employee – going by the handle “former_zyngite” – says that he was in a creative position at the company for over two years at the San Francisco office. He claims to have also worked with a couple of teams so his knowledge of the company and development culture at Zynga is rather extensive.

On the topic of scandals, the former employee says that Zynga wasn’t involved in anything that the public didn’t already know about. The worst “scandal” to his knowledge were the allegations that CEO Mark Pincus and other executives were involved in insider trading at the company, and bailed out before the stock tanked.

As for Zynga’s business strategy, the former employee says that it’s “terrible.” In short, he feels that Zynga was too slow to react to market moving from Facebook to mobile. Smaller developers really took off on mobile quickly, but Zynga was and is still having trouble in that market. Part of the problem, according to the former employee, is that Zynga would just chase trends:

And a serious lack of foresight over all. Too many major decisions are quick reactions to sudden changes in the market. If some games jumps to the top of the Top Grossing charts then everyone need to drop everything and change to follow it. Which wastes time, makes for bad design and ultimately puts projects behind schedule. It just means they’re always late to the party, and whatever game they’re trying to compete with has already faded away by the time their own version hits the market.

They rely too much on reacting to what is making money now, and too much on their own data. They don’t strive to make anything new or innovative and that’s no way to excel in the games market. You need to lead the pack, not try emulate the best practices of top games with the hopes that you can out perform and already established IP.

One constant theme when talking about Zynga are the allegations that the company outright steals other game ideas, and just slaps their signature style on it. The former employee doesn’t refute those claims, but says that Zynga has gotten much better about it after a lot of bad press came out against it with the Dream Heights fiasco and The Ville lawsuit.

Speaking of Zynga copying trends and following trends, the former employee addressed Zynga’s desire to enter the real money online gambling market. It’s already launched two real money games in the UK, and will probably be one of the loudest voices lobbying for its legalization in the US. Our mystery employee doesn’t think it’s going to work, however, for a variety of reasons:

It’s been legal in other countries for years. The companies that have been working those markets were the ones to pioneer and legitimize those markets.

Zynga is hopping in late. They have launched RMG (real money gambling) in the countries where it’s currently legal, but they’re not the first to the market.

They are pushing the legislation to make it legal in the US. But if it passes, there are other companies who have been doing it longer and better than zynga who will jump on the US market first. Zynga might jump on at the same time, but who are you going to trust your real money with? The company that has been managing online casinos for a decade or the company that is trying to jump into it now?

After all this negativity, it would be nice to hear something positive about Zynga. Our mystery employee, while critical of the company’s business practices, said that it took care of its employees and the community. For example, all employees were given three free meals a day, happy hour every Friday, unlimited vacation days, and a gym in the building.

As for the community, he says that Zynga promoted volunteering and “going green.” He says that Zynga is a “socially conscious” company.

Finally, we come to the number one question – is Zynga evil? He says that he thought that at first as he was acquihired into the company. After being there for a while, however, he says that Zynga is just like Dreamworks. Sure, the company exploits popular trends, but who doesn’t?

Besides, Zynga isn’t Hitler. That dude was evil and our mystery employee says that Zynga is a pretty good company by comparison.

  • George Bluth Talks Arrested Development On Reddit [No Touching!]

George Bluth Talks Arrested Development On Reddit [No Touching!]

Jeffrey Tambor, who plays twin brothers George and Oscar Bluth on Arrested Development participated in a reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) today, discussing the show, among other things.

Arrested Development, of course, is due to return as a Netflix-exclusive series later this month, and fans are champing at the bit to see what the long-anticipated fourth season has in store.

Tambor, of course, fielded many questions about the show. Following are some highlights. If you’re not familiar with the show, you might as well stop reading now, because much of the discussion requires you to be.

When asked about his favorite running theme/joke from the show, he responded, “There’s always money in the banana stand.”

One user asked how the famous chicken dance performed by numerous cast members on the show came about, to which he responded, “I never knew about it until I was asked to do it. And when I’m asked to do it, I do it very badly. I’m the worst chicken dancer of the cast.”

When asked whether he likes playing George or Oscar more, he said, “One side of my brain likes Oscar. One side of my brain likes George.”

When asked if Judy Greer (Kitty) ever flashed him in real life, he responded, “No. And that’s a problem.”

Tambor said it only took about five minutes for the cast to slip back into the AD roles once they started shooting again. “We’re all so used to each other. Our first scenes, we just slipped into it naturally,” he said. “They’re all very fine actors.”

In response to another question, he noted that very little of the dialogue on the show is ad-libbed, and that the writing is just that good.

Of course, he was asked about the long-rumored Arrested Development movie, to which he responded, “I think the new season will promote a great amount of popularity, which will help a movie come into existence.”

On his favorite AD guest star, Tambor said, “They were all great, but Henry Winkler is a close friend of mine, and I was so glad to have him aboard.”

On getting the news that the show would be canceled: “I was sad. I wasn’t surprised, I think we all saw it coming.”

On the most exciting thing about the upcoming season: “It’s new format. The fact that we’re doing 15 all at once, and each character gets to tell his story. We’re the little engine that could, and we came back.”

On his favorite episode: “Gosh, I would have to say that the entire fourth season. I’m just so happy to be back.”

    Hopefully us fans will agree.

Tambor was joined by the co-creators of Onion News Empire, so if you’re interested in that too, check out the thread.

Now watch this recent interview with Lucille Bluth.

  • Boston Manhunt: Redditor On Scene Offers Details In AMA

Boston Manhunt: Redditor On Scene Offers Details In AMA

The Boston manhunt is still going strong after one of the suspects in last week’s marathon bombing was shot and killed last night. The other suspect, who is still at large, is still in the Boston area with police sweeping through the Watertown area looking for him.

The residents of Watertown, and Boston at large, were encouraged to lock their doors and stay off the streets today. During the downtime, one Redditor who lives in Watertown did a live AMA (Ask Me Anything) of the situation.

Here’s the proof provided that shows he is in the Watertown area:

    (image)

The top question posed to the redditor, who is going by the handle of kamikazi, describes the situation last night when news first broke out that a cop at MIT had been shot and killed by the suspects. He also described the scene when the shootout began early in the morning as police pursued the suspects near his neighborhood.

“Before I went to bed last night I checked reddit and the MIT shooting was just breaking(like 15 minutes old) I remember thinking. “Maybe it’s the Bombers but more likely probably a mugging gone bad or something”

Woke up sometime between 12:30-1:30(I was groggy so don’t really remember) to what sounded like someone taking out their trash but being an absolutely loud ass douche about it. Lots of banging and rustling. Probably was the shoot out which is 3ish/4ish blocks away.”

Obviously, the people in Watertown could never guess that their community would be the center of national attention. Rabidkamakazi addresses this after a redditor asked him if he was scared or excited about the events around him:

“Both really. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live in the zone of a mjaor news story. Now I know. It’s both exhilarating and terrifying. Especially because of the bomb aspect. I’ve been running to my windows occasionally to take pictures and I keep thinking. Well what if a bomb denoted now and blew in this window. I’d be pretty fucked.”

He also says that he hopes nobody else dies, including the suspect:

“I’m hoping no one else dies, including the bomber. I want his ass dragged before a judge so he can go to prision and die a slow painful death by shanking, not a fast one from a cops bullet.”

Finally, he says that he already has a plan in place for once everything blows over:

“Call my parents and loved ones. Buy a pack of cigs. Have one. Throw the rest away. then see how I feel about work.”
