  • Foursquare’s “Nearby Friends” Feature Is Back by Popular Demand

Back in early June, Foursquare unveiled a huge overhaul of their mobile app. They called it “All New Foursquare” (#allnew4sq), and it brought a entirely different look with a redesigned friends feed and Explore tab. And boy did they put a lot of emphasis on that Explore tab – enhancing recommendations, nearby specials, and incorporating millions of check-ins into suggestions.

But one thing that was lost was the “Nearby friends” view in the news feed, which allowed users to filter their stream of check-ins to only include people in their general vicinity.

According to Foursquare, it was one of the most demanded features within feedback for the #allnew4sq, and today they’ve announced that it’s back.

“Some people use foursquare to keep up with all of their friends, but sometimes you just want to know what’s going on in your city. To switch between the two views on iPhone, just drag the screen down on your friends tab. On BlackBerry devices, you can now tap the friends icon to switch between the two views,” says Foursquare.

If you’re paying attention, you noticed that there’s no mention of Android there. Foursquare says that the Nearby Friends feature is coming back to Android “soon.”

  • BlackBerry Users Can Finally Snag The All New Foursquare

Earlier this month, after a week-long teaser period, Foursquare finally unveiled “All New Foursquare” (#allnew4sq) for iOS and Android. Today, they’re announcing that the new version (v.5.0) is now available to download on BlackBerry.

Like the iOS and Android apps, the new Foursquare looks quite different from the previous version. BlackBerry users will now see three main tabs at the top right of their stream (they’re on the bottom on iOS and Android) – the “Friends” tab, the “Explore” tab, and the “Profile” tab.

The Friends tab shows a more in-depth news feed from all of your Foursquare pals, complete with photos and comments. Users have the ability to “like” specific check-ins from this stream.

The Explore tab is Foursquare’s big push to cement its place as a true recommendation platform with personalized suggestions, deals, and the ability to browse destinations by category or by “top picks.” These recommendations pull from the millions of public check-ins that Foursquare has accumulated as well as those of your friends.

Like on iOS and Android, the BlackBerry update comes with a new Profile section that features a bio, stats, photos and badges. One interesting new feature is the ability to look at all of your past check-ins – just keep scrolling down the page.

Foursquare says that #allnew4sq is a “completely re-imagined app, torn apart and rebuilt anew to make it even easier to share and save your experiences and discover amazing things nearby, as soon as you open up the app.” After playing around with the iOS version for about two weeks now, I can tell you that it’s a massive improvement from any other Foursquare version of the past. So, BlackBerry users, you’re going to want to grab that update ASAP.

  • All New Foursquare Arrives With New Look, Better Recommendations

Foursquare has been teasing the “All New 4sq” for over a week, and today iOS and Android users can grab the upgrade. Apparently, Blackberry users will have to wait just a bit longer.

Everything is prettier, including a snazzy new Explore. To help you better share your adventures with your friends, we increased the number of check-ins they can see.

That’s the message that greets you when you open Foursquare after downloading today’s update. Foursquare does indeed look different from the last time you saw it, and I must say that they are right – it is prettier. But the beauty of the app is not really what the folks at Foursquare are focused on. Out of the gate you can tell that it’s all about Explore, Explore, Explore. What was once a mildly useful feature on the app is now front and center, and it contains a trove of information on you past check-ins, your friends’ check-ins, tips, specials, and more.

It’s clear that Foursquare wants to be your go-to place for not just checking-in, but discovering where to go and what to do.

First, you’ll notice that the “Friends” tab has been turned into a legitimate “news feed” of sorts. It has an all new look and feel, and includes much more information and options to interact with your friends’ check-ins than before.

All of the information now contained in the one feed was accessible before, but some of it took a little bit of digging. Now, the feed includes check-ins, tips, comments, as well as a new heart icon that allows users to “like” (or “love,” I guess) their friends’ check-ins. Photos associated with check-ins are now much larger and more prominent on the page, and the feed also shows additional information like who your friends just became friends with.

The Explore tab has been completely retooled to include all of that past data that Foursquare has mined from the millions of check-ins available to them. Scrolling from the top, Explore notifies you of nearby specials, followed by other interesting suggestions for places to go like “It’s been more than a year since you’ve been here,” and “some of your friends have been here.”

Of course, every recommendation comes complete with a list of your friends who have checked-in there as well as tips from them and the foursquare community at large. Everything is still based on location – I had to scroll pretty far for the new Explore to recommend a place outside of 2.5 miles away.

The Explore tab now sports a “Top Picks” button that allows you to browse popular venues in your current area. You can target your search by choosing a specific category like “Food,” “Nightlife,” “Shopping,” or “Sights.” Again, these suggestion rely heavily on you and your friends’ past check-in data. It will be interesting to see how well the new Explore tab directs you when you’re in an unfamiliar city.

The “Me” tab has also went through a redesign, but it still sports your basic info regarding friends, stats, photos, tips, badges, mayorships, and lists. One new addition to the mobile app is accessibility to your entire check-in history, which was previously only available on the web.

Foursquare says that we can expect more additions to the app in the near future:

This isn’t just a fresh coat of paint, it’s a whole new app. And, as such, it’s just the beginning. We’ve got lots more coming in the weeks ahead, and expect even more this summer. Our little team has been working hard to build an app that helps people make the most of where they are, and we’re so excited that you can finally play with it.

The All New Foursquare app looks great, and if the new Explore feature ends up truly providing better recommendations, then Foursquare may have just taken a serious step forward in terms of market dominance. There are plenty of location recommendation apps out there (most notably Yelp), but Foursquare holds a unique advantage – recommendations based on their giant database of you and your friends’ check-in information and tips. Foursquare has long wanted to move “beyond the check-in,” and this update puts them firmly on that path.

  • Foursquare Keeps Teasing “All New” App Set To Launch Thursday

For over a week now, Foursquare has been teasing us with screenshots from their upcoming update to their mobile app. The company has used Twitter to tweet photos with the hashtag #allnew4sq, hinting that a fairly major upgrade is in the pipeline. A few days ago they let us know that the new Foursquare was scheduled to launch this week, and today they’ve put an actual date on the record – Thursday.

It’s unclear exactly what will be contained in the “all new” Foursquare, but the aforementioned screenshots give us a few clues about the direction the location app wants to take.

For instance, the photo dropped today shows that Foursquare is about to tell users when their friends are nearby. This information could be discerned before, but this new interface looks to give you the location information of your buddies in a more concise, direct manner. Check it out:

Earlier teaser photos show what Foursquare is adding to the maps you see when using the app. It’s clear that these photos were taken from the mobile app as opposed to Foursquare.com because they still use Google maps, which Foursquare ditched back in February on their desktop site only.

Another screenshot hints at a possible new recommendation service that utilizes location + friend check-ins. Over a year ago, Foursquare’s Dennis Crowley mentioned “predictive check-ins” that suggest activities to users based on the loads of data that the company has at their disposal. Something like this could be one step in the evolution towards that concept being fully realized.

Could the all new Foursquare advance the goal to become a real recommendation service that moves beyond the check-ins? Their “Explore” feature begun that transition, and I guess we’ll see in a few days what this new version has to offer.
