  • Allen “The Answer” Iverson’s Number to be Retired

According to an NBC announcement this Wednesday, Allen Iverson’s no. 3 will join its rightful place among legendary names such as Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving and Charles Barkley when his jersey gets retired on the first of March next year.

The recently retired star was the 1996 NBA Draft’s first pick and played for the 76ers for 10 seasons. He had brief stints in Denver, Detroit, Memphis and Turkey and once more in Philadelphia before officially announcing his retirement this October.

The 6’0 point guard from Hampton, Virginia was often one of the smaller players on the court, but played with unmatched speed, dexterity and a “leave it all on the court” style to make him one of the most formidable players of the NBA. His cornrow braids, numerous tattoos and outspokenness (remember his rant about Practice?) also made him one of the most controversial and influential players of NBA history.

Iverson boasts the Rookie of the Year accolade, All Star status for 11 seasons and the Most Valuable Player award when he led the 76ers to the NBA finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. He also matches the great Wilt Chamberlain in the 76ers highest scoring average of 27.6 points a game.

Be sure to catch the jersey hanging ceremony during the March 1st game against the Washington Wizards at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

  • Allen Iverson Is Retiring From The NBA

Allen Iverson Is Retiring From The NBA

Allen Iverson announced his retirement on Wednesday, October 30. He made the announcement during a press conference in Philadelphia, and it was also publiczied during the first game for the 76ers, when highlights of his career were shown on the screen.

It has been a while since anyone has seen him playing on the court, but Iverson has officially declared his retirement now, as a member of the 76ers were he spent much of his career. He played on the all-star team a total of 11 times, and was selected on the All-NBA team seven times. He was highly popularized throughout his career, being given multiple nicknames including “A.I.” and “The Answer.”

For Allen Iverson’s official retirement, he gave a speech that ran more than 10 minutes, thanking his family, coaches, teammates, and he also gave reflections as to how he had an impact on the game, and its culture.

Essentially, the NBA had already given up on him, since it had been four years after his last game. Allen Iverson played in the league for 14 years, after graduating from Georgetown. He most recently played with the Nuggets, and a season with the Pistons, before returning to the 76ers to finish out his outstanding career.

Speaking on his decision to finally retire, Iverson said “I never imagined the day coming, but I knew it would come. I feel proud and happy to say that I’m happy with my decision and I feel great.” Iverson was a shooting guard for the 76ers, and was one of the best players in the NBA throughout the mid-90’s and early 00’s.

Every player has to retire at some point, and some people probably think that it would have been wise for Allen Iverson to retire years ago, when he still seemed relevant. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 draft by 76ers.

Allen Iverson, at 38-years-old, is ranked 19th on the career scoring list with 24,368 points. He singled out Michael Jordan as his inspiration, and also thanked both his Georgetown coach John Thompson, and Larry Brown, who coached him in Philadelphia.

  • Allen Iverson: Ex Wants Child Support Upfront

Allen Iverson, father of five, is waiting on a ruling from the court system on whether or not he should pay his ex, Tawanna Turner, upfront for the next 13 years. Iverson dodged jail time less than two months ago by giving Turner $40,000 in owed child support. Iverson apparently failed to pay because he felt they could reconcile.

After battling in court numerous times, Iverson has a record of failing to pay this lump already. It wasn’t until Iverson was threatened with jail time, that he decided to pay her the owed amount, and NOT go to jail. Not only was Iverson in court for his lack of paying child support, but he was alleged by the courts and his ex in July that he abducted his children when refusing to return them, which he denied. Allen Iverson said on the Mo’nique show in July 2008, before youngest baby Dream arrived, “I’ve got four kids and one on the way. I’m the coach in that house. If I’m not setting a good example, then I’m failing as a father. That’s the last thing I’d want to do is fail my kids.” Tawanna has sole legal and primary physical custody of their children. Father of the year right?

Tired and angry, Turner has now asked the courts for Iverson to pay up for the next 13 years worth upfront, totaling over $1.2 million. For an ex All-Star NBA player, this seems like pocket change.

Iverson is stacked with athletic credentials including: former No. 1 overall pick out of Georgetown, the 1997 Rookie of the Year, the 2001 MVP, a three-time All-NBA First-Team selection and a four-time scoring champion. Iverson’s has not played in the NBA since 2010 and his professional career ended in 2011 playing in Turkey. Over the course of 1996 to 2010, he made over $150 million in his NBA career.

According to divorce documents revealed in December, Iverson has some serious financial issues. Not to mention, is preparing to retire very soon, according to SlamOnline.

Depending on the courts ruling, Iverson could face essentially paying Turner child support in its entirety now, instead of making payments through October 2026, when their youngest turns 18 years old. Allen has five children: oldest daughter Tiaura (b. 1995), son, Allen II (b. 1998), another son, named Isaiah, and second youngest daughter, named Messiah Lauren born in 2005. Dream Alijha is the youngest, born October 7, 2008.

Turner plans to put this money in a trust for all the children. The courts as of yet, have not ruled on this decision.

  • Allen Iverson Will Soon Announce Retirement

Allen Iverson, a past NBA star, will soon be announcing his retirement. His decision to make the announcement was just recently finalized and we should expect the news coming from him soon, says emerging reports.

Iverson, one of the greatest guards to ever play for the National Basketball Association, has not played in the NBA since the 2009-2010 season. At that time, he played for the Philadelphia 76ers. He was a member of the NBA for 13 years and averaged 27 points per game during his career.

He won a MVP regular season award and was a 11- time All-Star. During his NBA career, in 1996, he was the number one draft pick out of Georgetown. He has not, however, played basketball since 2011, when he played pro ball in Turkey.

He has five children and recently commented on how they are a top priority in his life. In late March, when asked if he would ever return to the NBA, he replied to the public by saying “My No. 1 goal is trying to accomplish to be the best dad that I can. And if basketball is in my near future, then God will make that happen. But if not, I had a great ride and I’ve done a lot of special things that a lot of guys have not been able to accomplish and people thought I couldn’t accomplish.”

In the past few years, Iverson has also been in and out of court. In January of this year, his divorce with Tawanna Turner was settled. They knew each other since high school and were married since 2001. She is the mother of his children.

Since the divorce was filed in March of 2010, it has been brought up in the news that Allen Iverson has struggled with finances. His Atlanta mansion was sold in a foreclosure auction this past February.

Although he has had a bumpy past few years, he will long be remembered as a legend in the NBA world. Could he possibly even be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame?!

Be on the lookout, his decision regarding his retirement will probably become public in the next few days.

  • Allen Iverson Confronted Over Kidnapping Accusations [VIDEO]

Earlier this week, former NBA all-star Allen Iverson was accused of kidnapping his own children. Iverson’s ex-wife, Tawanna Iverson filed court documents stating that Allen took the couple’s five children on a vacation on May 22, but has not returned them. Tawanna won full custody of the children in the couple’s 2010 divorce, claiming that Allen had been abusing alcohol and gambling heavily.

In the court papers, Tawanna claimed that Allen was living with the children in a hotel in Georgia. Now, an Atlanta reporter has tracked down the hotel named in the document and confronted Allen about the kidnapping accusations.

Jeff Hullinger, a reporter for Atlanta’s NBC 11, staked out a Sheraton Suites hotel in Cobb County, waiting for the former NBA star. When Allen did appear in the parking lot, it was with the children he is accused of having kidnapped. The reporter questioned Iverson as he walked to his car and bucked his children into their seats. When asked if he wanted to see the court documents, Iverson replied, “The say I stole my own kids?” He was then evasive over whether the accusations were true.

“If that’s what you believe, that’s what people think I’m crazy enough to do then so be it,” said Iverson. “I ain’t never treated fairly. I don’t expect to, I don’t expect to be.

  • Allen Iverson Accused of Kidnapping Children

Former NBA all-star Allen Iverson has been accused of kidnapping his own children.

According to TMZ, Allen’s ex-wife has filed courtroom documents claiming that Iverson has not returned his five children after taking them on vacation. Tawanna Iverson states that Allen took their children, who range in age from three to 16, on a trip to North Carolina on May 22. The children were supposed to have been returned to Tawanna by May 26, but have still not been handed over.

Tawanna also claims that the children were subsequently to be returned to her on June 4th, but that Allen did not show up for the exchange. She believes that Allen is keeping the children at a hotel in Georgia. Allen has also filed court documents claiming that Tawanna’s assertions are untrue.

Tawanna and Allen have been battling it out over custody and child support payments for years. Tawanna filed for divorce from Iverson in 2010, and has full custody of the children. She has filed court documents in the past claiming that Allen has not paid child support since their divorce.

The divorce came just as Allen’s NBA career was coming to an end. Though he had signed on once again with the Philadelphia 76ers, he began missing games, he claimed, to attend to the health of his daughter Messiah. Reports at the time began surfacing that Iverson had been indulging in heavy drinking and gambling, and was in significant debt as a result.

  • Allen Iverson ‘We’re Talkin’ About Practice” Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary

I can’t believe it, we’re sitting here talking about practice. Not the ‘game’ that Allen Iverson died for, and played every one like it was his last…10 years ago. Yes, take a moment to let that last bit sink in. It has been a decade since Allen Iverson became frustrated about a reporter’s question regarding Larry Brown criticizing Allen Iverson over missing team practices. At the time, the 76ers had just lost to Boston in a hard fought five game series, which nobody really remembers. We all remember this press conference segment, however…

It had been awhile since I’d seen the video, and I have to say it holds up well and is definitely on the list of greatest sports rants ever, if not THE greatest. There have been videos released which have counted how many times “practice” was uttered in his rant; if you’re curious, it’s more than twenty.

Twitter has come alive with reactions to the ten year anniversary, ranging everywhere from comical, to supporting Iverson, to criticizing the former superstar.
