  • Q1 2021 US Cloud Infrastructure Spending Grew 29%

Q1 2021 US Cloud Infrastructure Spending Grew 29%

Cloud infrastructure spending grew a whopping 29% in Q1 2021, buoyed by the impact the pandemic has had on businesses.

As the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe, organizations of all sizes accelerated their transition to cloud computing in an effort to stay productive. Especially as employees were sent home to work remotely, cloud computing became one of the single most critical factors in many businesses’ success.

The accelerated digital transformation continues to impact the cloud market, according to data from Canalys. In fact, spending increased some 29%, hitting $18.6 billion.

Cloud infrastructure services spend in the United States grew 29% in Q1 2021 to a record US$18.6 billion. Total expenditure increased US$4.2 billion in the last year and US$621 million in the last quarter according to the latest Canalys data. Dollar for dollar, annual expansion was the highest in two years, indicating robust demand for cloud services. The focus on digital transformation during the COVID-19 pandemic was the main factor behind the continued investment momentum, aided by the economic recovery and subsequent restart of some delayed projects.

As the US rolls out the Biden administration’s modernization initiatives, Canalys sees cloud providers benefiting even more, especially with the addition of $1 billion added to the Technology Modernization Fund, part of the larger America Rescue Plan. AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud — with 37%, 23% and 9% of the US market respectively — are rapidly building out their infrastructure to keep up.

“Cloud service providers have a big opportunity with the US government, not only with its stated desire to modernize technologies, but also its renewed focus on cybersecurity efforts,” said Canalys Vice President Alex Smith. “The recent SolarWinds hack affected nine federal agencies and the Colonial Pipeline hack exposed the high risk all organizations face. With intense competition over large government cloud contracts, such as the US$10 billion JEDI contract, a security advantage will pay off for bidding cloud service providers.”

  • Chiefs Lose to the Colts in Horrible Fashion

The Kansas City Chiefs blew a huge lead on Saturday, January 4, 2013, against the Indianapolis Colts. At half-time, the Chiefs were ahead 31-10, and by the third quarter, they were up 38-10. Yet, the franchise could not keep the twenty-eight point lead. Though Andrew Luck threw three interceptions, he rallied the Colts back into the game with his eleventh career comeback. He completed 17 out of 24 passes for 314 yards and 3 touchdowns in the second half, orchestrating the second-biggest comeback in NFL history with the Colts’ 45-44 wild-card victory. The first biggest comeback in NFL history belongs to the Buffalo Bills when they came back from a 32-point deficit to beat the Houston Oilers in overtime on January 3, 1993.

The crowd in Lucas Oil Stadium exploded into an uproar when Andrew Luck threw the game-winning 64-yard touchdown pass to T.Y. Hilton, after he split safeties Quintin Demps and Kendrick Lewis, with 4:21 left in the fourth quarter. Hilton finished the playoff game with 13 catches for 224 yards and 2 touchdowns, which marks a franchise-best. The Colts now advance to the divisional round and will either face the New England Patriots or the Denver Broncos next weekend. As for the Kansas City Chiefs, they have been officially eliminated, in gut-wrenching and horrible fashion, losing yet another playoff game.

The Chiefs have yet to win a playoff game since 1993 and this game marks their eighth straight postseason loss. The franchise is now tied with the Detroit Lions for the most consecutive postseason losses in NFL history. Smith finished the game with 30 of 46 completed passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns, but it was not enough to keep Luck and the Colts from achieving victory.

It must be certain that Kansas City fans cannot be happy with this end result, but some continue to praise the franchise for their perseverance throughout their regular-season games.

  • Kansas City Chiefs Remain Unbeaten With Another Win

The Kansas City Chiefs were possibly one of the last teams that most fans and analysts expected to see in this position, over halfway through the season. A team that has struggled in recent years has found new life with their quarterback Alex Smith, and after today, has a record of 9-0.

Their latest win came with a week 9 defeat of the Buffalo Bills. The final score ended with the Chiefs winning 23-13, in a game that they trailed in early on, giving fans a scare. With the win, the Chiefs remain undefeated, and are the last remaining unbeaten team in the NFL. It also matches their best start in franchise history, which was set in 2003.

This victory also marks the ninth straight games that the Kansas City Chiefs have held their opponents to 17 points or fewer, which matches an NFL record that was set by the Atlanta Falcons in 1977. Chiefs coach Andy Reid is also in his first year as their head coach after leaving Philadelphia, and has completely turned around the franchise as they went from worst last year, to being first this year.

The franchise suffered an abysmal record of 2-14 last season. The addition of Alex Smith, who was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year, is also a great help to the team.

The Chiefs were beat in almost every offensive category, but the errors that the Bills committed were simply too much to overcome in the end, and the defense of the Chiefs got to them. It is of course difficult for the Bills to try to compete after their quarterbacks are continually getting injured, and in today’s game they were forced to play Jeff Tuell, the fourth-string player.

If it were not for the amazing showmanship of the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense, they would not have been able to win this game. The offense continued to struggle throughout, and by the end of the game Alex Smith only completed 19 of 29 passes for 124 yards, and Jamaal Charles was held under 100 yards rushing for the first time all season.

The Kansas City Chiefs won an important game, and will carry the momentum with them into the bye week, as the prepare to face off against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos on November 17, in what will surely be one of the better games of the season to watch.

  • Tony Romo Has Bruised Ribs; Will Play Against KC

After taking a dual-hit from both Matthias Kiwanuka and Justin Trattou during the 2nd quarter of Sunday night’s Cowboys vs. Giants game, Tony Romo remained on the ground and missed the next snap. At first glance, it almost appeared that Cowboys fans (and the rest of the NFL community) would have a chance to delight that someone else would finally be playing quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Fortunately for Tony Romo (and unfortunately for the rest of us), X-rays after last night’s game show that Romo only suffers from bruised ribs. In talking to Dallas’s 105.3 The Fan, Steven Jones, vice-president of the Cowboys, stated that “We feel optimistic with the tests coming back negative. He’ll be sore but something he’ll be able to play with, as it looks right now.’’

Bruised ribs are an injury that most quarterbacks deal with during their tenure in the NFL. Romo, however, has cause for special concern. During a game against the 49ers in 2011, Romo suffered a broken rib and a punctured lung after being hit by linebacker Ahmad Brooks. Despite the injury, however, Romo was able to come back into the game and lead his team to victory. Perhaps that is why the Cowboys and Romo are so optimistic concerning his return Sunday. There should still be some worry on behalf of the Cowboys, however. Dez Bryant suffered a sprain foot during the 4th quarter of Sunday night’s game, and cornerback Morris Claiborne also suffered an injury to his shoulder.

Despite the criticism constantly surrounding Romo and his injury Sunday night, Romo showcased why he is a starting NFL quarterback. Romo completed 36 of 49 passes for 263 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Fans can only hope that Romo will repeat this performance next week against the Kansas City Chiefs, who saw a spark of life in their first game of the year with a 28-2 victory over Jacksonville, behind the efforts of new quarterback Alex Smith (formerly of the 49’ers) and new head coach Andy Reid (formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles).

  • 49ers Trade Alex Smith to the Chiefs

49ers Trade Alex Smith to the Chiefs

The San Francisco 49ers NFL football team has announced it has traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs. In return, the 49ers are expected to receive an undisclosed 2013 draft pick and a conditional 2014 draft pick.

Smith himself was a number 1 draft pick by the 49ers in 2005, and before that played in college for the University of Utah, where he went 21-1 as a starter. His rookie season in the NFL was marred by an injury, and he played only nine games that season. Smith has fought injuries and changing coaching staff in his eight seasons with the 49ers, ending up with a 59.3% pass completion rate and 81 touchdowns.

“We would like to thank Alex for his contributions to the 49ers organization over the past eight years,” said Trent Baalke, general manager for the 49ers. “He is a true professional who represented the 49ers with class on and off the field.”

The 49ers have posted a photo gallery of Smith’s career with the team to the 49ers website. 49ers fans have been using the hashtag #ThankYouAlex to recount their memories and express their feelings toward Smith via Twitter:

  • Alex Smith Interviews With Miami Dolphins

Alex Smith Interviews With Miami Dolphins

With the recent news that Matt Flynn, formerly with Green Bay, has signed a 3-year contract with Seattle, Miami is now looking for a new quarterback. Flynn was in talks with Miami before signing the deal, but says he chose Seattle because of the people:

But this doesn’t exactly leave Miami floundering; the 49ers have a free agent of their own, Alex Smith, and after a disappointing start early in his career, he had an impressive turnaround last season and helped San Francisco go 13-3. And now, he’s looking for a team.

Smith was called in to Miami for a meeting on Sunday, and since then rumors have flown around the sports world as to what move he’ll make after the five-hour interview, especially since Peyton Manning is in talks to negotiate with San Francisco and the two share a sports agent. The worry, Smith says, is that it will be a conflict of interest. It could even lead to him changing agents, but only time will tell. Manning is notorious for taking his time with decision making, and this isn’t one he’ll take lightly. For now, Smith will have to play the waiting game until Manning makes a move.

It’s rumored that Smith could get upwards of $8 million with this deal if it goes through.

Reactions were mixed in the Twitter universe:
