  • Tracy Morgan Shocker: Will Comedian Be Left With Permanent Brain Damage?

Tracy Morgan Shocker: Will Comedian Be Left With Permanent Brain Damage?

It may be hard for members of the public to understand the kind of trauma experienced by actor Tracy Morgan during his horrific car accident.

But recent news should help to drive home just how difficult recovery has been for the 45-year-old comedian.

According to Morgan’s lawyer, Benedict Morelli, it’s still unknown whether or not he will ever be able to perform again.

Tracy is currently undergoing rehabilitation for damage received when his limousine was struck by a Walmart truck driver on the New Jersey turnpike. The accident, which occurred back in June, took the life of James McNair, a good friend of Tracy Morgan’s.

The incident also left Morgan in critical condition, at points looking as though he too may succumb to injuries.

Tracy Morgan has battled back from the brink, making serious strides.

However, the 30 Rock actor had to content with more than broken bones. Morelli also said that Morgan suffered from a severe brain injury.

He’s also reportedly in rehab to repair his speech, cognitive, vocational and physical functions.

Even with all the hard work, it’s believed that a complete recovery from injuries might be impossible.

There’s speculation that Morgan may not be able to walk again without some form of assistance.

However, as his recovery is ongoing, it’s too soon to say whether or not not this is a definite reality.

Tracy’s lawyer seems to have a great deal of faith in his client’s chances.

“Mr. Morgan is a fighter,” said Morelli, “He’s fighting to get better. And if there’s a chance for him to be back to the Tracy Morgan he once was, he’s going to try to do that.”

Tracy Morgan is suing Walmart over the car accident. The company fired back that Morgan and his fellow passengers are partially to blame for the events of the night as they were not wearing seat belts.

Kevin Roper, the Walmart driver who plowed into Morgan’s limo from behind, was charged vehicular homicide and assault by auto for his role in the horrific event.

Reports indicate that Roper hit the vehicle while going 65 mph. The speed limit was 45 mph that night due to ongoing construction.

  • Train Derailment Injures Dozens in Arkansas

Disaster struck on Thursday as a freight train collided with a passenger train in Washington County, Arkansas. The accident has left dozens injured and has prompted an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

According to a report from Little Rock NBC affiliate KARK, five people were critically injured in the crash and at least 20 more were injured in some way. There were reportedly 44 people on-board the passenger train at the time of the crash. Several of those injured were reported to have been train crew members.

The NTSB announced yesterday that it has launched an investigation into the incident. An NTSB “go-team” of railroad investigators has been sent to the site of the crash. The team is expected to be at the scene of the accident for five to seven days to collect perishable evidence.

The KARK report quotes police as stating the passenger train left Springdale, Arkansas early Thursday morning and later slipped off its tracks. The freight train was reportedly sent for aid, but ended up crashing into the passenger train.

According to the NTSB the passenger train, made up of one locomotive and four cars, stalled in what is called “dark territory” – a section of track controlled by a railroad’s operations control center rather than signals. The cause of the stall has not yet been determined.

An NTSB spokesperson went on to state that the rescue train dispatched to help collided head-on with the passenger train’s lead engine. Both trains were derailed as a result of the crash, though no fuel was released and there were no fires. Both of the trains had forward-facing video recorders that should help investigators determine the cause of the accident. The official number of passengers injured in the crash has not yet been determined.

The next NTSB media briefing has been scheduled for Friday at 5 pm EDT in Springdale.

  • Florida Bus Crash Involves School Bus, Naked Woman

Car crashes happen every day all over the world and are so common that the majority of them do not even make local headlines. There are exceptions, of course. Someone like Jennifer Lopez being rear-ended is bound to make the tabloids. Also, Florida. Florida is always an exception.

On Monday a log truck slammed into the back of a school bus in Starke, Florida. According to a Florida Times-Union report a chaotic scene involving children crying and a naked woman lying nearby played out as rescue workers arrived at the crash site.

A Bradford County, Florida sheriff told the Times-Union that some children were trapped on the bus when he arrived. The sheriff also stated that the injured, naked woman appeared to have been thrown from the truck during the crash.

Fifteen children were aboard the bus when the crash occurred and seven were taken to the hospital for injuries. Three adults were also injured in the crash – the bus driver, the truck driver, and the naked woman (later determined to be the truck driver’s wife). No one died as a result of the crash.

What exactly caused the crash has not yet been determined. The most intriguing question surrounding the incident – why the woman was naked – has also not yet been determined.

According to the Times-Union report the crash occurred at a school bus stop on U.S. 301 on Monday afternoon while the bus was dropping off elementary school students. It was raining at the time and some parents were waiting at the bus stop. The bus driver saw the truck speeding toward the bus and hit the accelerator before the crash, mitigating some of the impact. Even so, the truck slammed into the bus without breaking, pushing it about 40 yards into a field by the road. Witnesses told the newspaper that the truck’s engine became dislodged as the truck jacknifed into a ditch.

The Times-Union has since reported that the truck had been stopped and inspected in Nassau County at around noon on Monday. Authorities had been alerted that the log truck, which was not carrying a load, was driving recklessly.

Utah Car Crash Kills 5, Injures 2

The Fourth of July weekend is one of the most dangerous driving weekends in the U.S., with millions of motorists hitting the nation’s highways – and many of them not entirely sober. This danger was viscerally illustrated this weekend by a deadly car crash in a remote part of Utah.

The crash, as reported by the Salt Lake Tribune, took the lives of five people Sunday afternoon. Two others are still in critical condition following the accident.

The accident occurred at around 2:30 pm on Sunday on U.S. Highway 191 just north of Monticello, Utah. A van carrying five people reportedly attempted to pass another car and crashed head-on into a sports car coming down the other lane. The two people riding in the sports car died, as did three of the people in the van. The van’s two other passengers have not died, but are in critical condition.

The Utah Highway Patrol closed both lanes of traffic on U.S. 191 following the accident.

This tragedy marks the second deadly highway accident to occur in Utah over the Fourth of July weekend. On July 4 a woman and two children died in a similar car crash in Tooele County, Utah. According to a Salt Lake Tribune report, the family’s SUV collided with a truck driving in the wrong lane of Interstate 80 on Friday evening. The woman’s husband and the driver of the truck were in serious condition as of Saturday.

Before the Fourth of July weekend the Utah Highway Patrol had announced via its website that troopers would be out in full force throughout the summer. The organization’s goal for the summer driving season is “proactive policing,” which includes troopers “doing all they can to gain voluntary compliance through education and enforcement.”

  • Former Napster COO Milton Olin Jr. Dies After Being Hit By Police Car

Milton Olin Jr., who once served as COO of Napster, is dead after being hit by a police car while riding his bicycle.

The accident happened at 1:05 PM at the 22000 block of Mulholland Highway in Los Angeles on Sunday. Olin was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene. He was sixty-five years old. CBS Los Angeles reports:

Investigators confirmed to CBS2′s Melanie Woodrow the deputy was on routine patrol and was not responding to an emergency at the time of the collision. They also confirmed that Olin, a prominent entertainment attorney, was in the bike lane when he was struck.

The deputy who was driving was taken to the hospital. Authorities say he has minor lacerations to his face and cuts on his eye due to glass that broke from the impact of the collision.

The police say that speed wasn’t a factor in Olin’s death, and that drugs nor alcohol are believed to be involved. The deputy who hit Olin has so far not been named. He’s being interviewed today.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Olin was working as a partner at Altschul & Olin. He had been practicing law since departing Napster in 2002 (he spent two years at the company). Prior to napster, he had been SVP at FirstLook.com, SVP Business & Legal Affairs A&M at Polygram, SVP Business & Legal Affairs at A&M Records, and a partner at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP.

The above photo comes from what appears to be Olin’s personal Twitter account where he has often tweeted about cycling.

The accident comes less than three months after former Amazon CFO Joy Covey was also killed in a bicycle accident in San Mateo County.

  • Parasailing Accident Leaves Two Teens Hospitalized [VIDEO]

Two 17-year-old girls were injured on Monday after a parasailing accident sent them airborne. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Indiana teens were vacationing in Panama City Beach this week when they were carried aloft on a gust of wind after attempts to winch them back failed. The boat they were attached to was anchored to keep it from being pulled onto shore, and the towline then became detached. The girls smashed into the side of a building and hit power lines before landing on parked vehicles.

Part of the disturbing accident was captured by a foul-mouthed beach-goer and posted to YouTube:

Both of the girls suffered head trauma, and one received spinal surgery this week. Though they were in critical condition when they arrived at a local hospital, they are now expected to recover.

Aquatic Adventures, the company that runs the parasailing business issued a statement this week saying that its employees “adhere to best practices to minimize the risks associated with watersport activities,” but that “sudden weather conditions can and do occur.”

  • Teen Misses Trip That Killed Five Friends in Fiery Car Crash

A California teen who missed a Memorial Day trip with his friends is now coming to grips with how close his life came to ending.

According to an Associated Press report, 17-year-old Tamer Mosallam’s friends were the teens that died in a fiery Memorial Day car crash in Los Angeles. The teens, who have now been identified, were all students from the Irvine Unified School District.

Police now believe they have pieced together some of the details of the deadly crash. 17-year old Abdulrahman Alyahyan was reportedly driving the car in Newport Beach on Monday when it hit a tree in the road median. The force of the impact split the car in two, and one half of what remained caught fire. Four of the passengers were thrown from the car and died at the scene. One of the teens was only partially thrown from the vehicle, and died after being taken to a nearby hospital.

The other passengers in the car included 17-year-old Cecilia Zamora, 17-year-old Nozad Al Hamawendi, 17-year-old Robin Cabrera, and 16-year-old Aurora Cabrera. The Cabreras were sisters.

Mosallam told the AP that he was to have been the sixth passenger in the car, to make the trip a triple date. His father, however, would not let him go because he was studying for a test.

Irvine Unified School District Superintendent Terry Walker this week issued a statement on the deaths of the students, calling the tragedy an “unimaginable loss.” From the statement:

Our community bears an unimaginable loss today as we mourn the passing of five students who were tragically killed on Monday in a horrific car accident.

There are simply no words to convey the sorrow felt by our students and staff, nor are there sufficient answers to explain the loss of five vibrant teenagers from our schools and this community.

On behalf of the entire organization, our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of each of these young men and women. We will do everything possible to help our schools cope with this tragedy in the emotional times ahead.

  • I-5 Bridge Collapses in Washington State, Three Cars Plunge Into River

A bridge crossing the Skagit River in Northwest Washington State collapsed on Thursday, sending three vehicles into the river and injuring three people.

According to a report from Seattle’s local Fox affiliate, a bridge along I-5 about 60 miles north of Seattle collapsed, sending vehicles into the Skagit River 50 feet blow. People in those vehicles were reported to have climbed on top of their cars to stay out of the water. The injured persons are all reported to have survived with only minor injuries.

A Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) cited witnesses as saying the cause of the bridge collapse was an oversized load truck that struck the bridge, though the official cause of the collapse is still under investigation. The department has closed both directions of traffic on the I-5 in Skagit County, and is advising locals on possible detour routes. The National Transportation Safety Board will also be investigating the collapse, after which the WSDOT will remove the broken bridge and replace it.

  • Teen Shoots 6-Year-Old Sister, Young Girl In Stable Condition

A little over a week after a young boy shot and killed his younger sister, another similar tragedy has occurred after a teen shot his 6-year-old sister in the chest. The difference is that this young girl survived.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that a 13-year-old boy accidentally shot his 6-year-old sister in the chest with a handgun at their Oakland Park home over the weekend. It was later revealed that there was no supervision at home at the time of the shooting.

The accident was reported by Justin Latourette, a neighbor, after he heard a gunshot a little before 7 p.m. He recounted the scene of when they were wheeling the young giri into an ambulance:

“Her shirt was bloody, and you could see through a piece of gauze that she had a hole in her chest above the heart. Her eyes were wide open in a blank stare, like she was in shock. I’ll never forget that look.”

Thankfully, the young girl who has now been identified as Angela Divin is said to be improving after she was listed as critical over the weekend.

Statistics from the Children’s Defense Fund suggest that accidents like this one aren’t uncommon, and that parents need to do a better job of securing guns while educating children about the danger of firearms. In fact, the Fund found that one-third of all households with children under 18 have a gun in the house, and more than 40 percent of those households don’t store said guns in a inaccessible, or locked, location.

  • Teen Hit by Softball Dies on His Birthday

Though deaths rarely occur as a result of playground activity, tragic reminders sometimes pop up to remind us that injuries can happen, and that some of them can be fatal.

This week, a San Diego-area high school student died after being hit by a softball during a P.E. class.

According to a report from San Diego news station ABC 10, 16-year-old Taylor Dorman was playing a game called “over-the-line” during his P.E. class at Ramona High School on Wednesday when he was hit in the chest with a softball. Though the teen laughed off the injury, he collapsed 20 minutes later.

Dorman was taken to a local hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. His heartbeat was reportedly irregular, and doctors were unable to stabilize it. Dorman was pronounced dead on Wednesday, April 10, which also happened to be his 16th birthday.

Students at the high school held a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening, during which they released birthday balloons for the teen.
