  • Bill O’Reilly Plugs Latest “Killing…” Series Books

Political commentator and author Bill O’Reilly gave an early plug for his latest nonfiction history book during an interview with CBS’ 60 Minutes this weekend. He also detailed the third, and latest, book in his nonfiction series, Killing Jesus, just out in September.

The muse to writing on Jesus came to the life-long Catholic at night and he points to divine inspiration for the idea, “My inspiration comes from that [the holy spirit] and so I wrote Killing Jesus because I think I was directed to write that.” But, O’Reilly says, “It’s not a religious book… it’s all about history,” though the work is bound to spark commentary. The contract for the book amounts to over $10 million, to be shared with his co-author, Martin Dugard, who does the bulk of the research for the publications.

The fourth book of the Killing… series, is anticipated for release September of 2014, and will focus on World War II. The series started with Killing Lincoln—which was turned into a 2013 docudrama for National Geographic Channel, featuring Tom Hanks as narrator and Billy Campbell as Abraham Lincoln—and book two was Killing Kennedy. National Geographic adaptations are already set for Jesus and Kennedy—premiering this November. The channel hit viewership records during last February’s airing of Lincoln.

O’Reilly (pictured here on vacation in Ireland, 2013) said the new book includes, “brand-new information about some very, very fascinating things,” but he would not reveal if the title will mimic the rest of the series.

According to the interview, O’Reilly’s show, The O’Reilly Factor, has reigned for 13 years as the most watched program on cable news. Known for a history of combative interviewing, CBS interviewer Norah O’Donnell claims he is “mellower” than during his earlier appearance on the news magazine, when interviewed in 2004 by Mike Wallace.

Other publications penned by O’Reilly include children’s versions of the history series and titles such as Keep It Pithy: Useful Observations in a Tough World (2013) and No Spin Zone: Confrontations with the Powerful & Famous in America (2002).

  • The Battle of Antietam: 151 Years Later

The Battle of Antietam: 151 Years Later

In a 12 hour period, from 5:30 AM to 5:30 PM, on September 17, 1862, America saw its bloodiest battle in its young history – a battle which continues to hold said record. On this day 151 years ago, approximately 113,000 men laid their lives on the line to fight for beliefs they believed were worth dying for. Pride was on the line for Union, who were attempting to defend against the first Confederate invasion of the North since the Civil War had begun. Momentum was on the line for the Confederacy, who were coming off of a fantastic victory at Second Bull Run just 18 days before. However, by the end of the day, neither side would be able to claim victory.

The Battle of Antietam saw a total of around 23,000 casualties, with 3,654 total dead. It was surprising actions by Robert E. Lee and consistent behavior by General George McClellan that probably amounted to the high casualty count. Lee had pursued a defensive strategy for the entirety of the war up to this point. However, feeling the momentum from the victory at Second Bull Run and acknowledging the necessary advantage of acquiring the food supplies available in Maryland, Lee decided now was the time to push into the North and move from defense to offense.

McClellan, though, was presented with a prime advantage. Several days before the battle was to occur, Union troops intercepted battle plans written by Lee, in which he revealed his plans to divide his smaller amount of troops in order to create a tactical advantage. McClellan, being the slow-operator he was, failed to capitalize on this information, though, and concocted a fail-certain battle plan in which no general knew what the entire battle-plan was; each general was only responsible for the actions of his troop and nothing else.

McClellan’s ineptitude essentially eliminated his numbers advantage of having twice as many troops as Lee. As a result of McClellan’s patchwork plan, Lee was able to constantly move his troops to areas in which the most help was needed. This allowed the battle to continue longer than necessary, culminating in the huge loss of life on that day. If he would have had it his way, Lincoln would have wanted to see even more casualties. The President was upset when he realize that McClellan did not pursue the retreating Confederate forces and further decimate their strength.

Despite the fact that the Confederacy retreated first, the battle is viewed as a draw today – except in one regard. By protecting the North from a Confederate invasion, Union troops allowed Lincoln the opportunity to announce the Emancipation Proclamation, the document that would go on to free all Southern slaves.

So, how are we remembering this momentous battle today? Apparently, through demonstrations by the Ku Klux Klan. The Confederate White Knights, as the group is called, applied for a permit allowing them to demonstrate their beliefs on the battlefield where Antietam was fought. What is their platform, you ask? The group has decided to use their event to protest against Barack Obama: Barack Hussein Obama has been out to destroy American from the beginning. Our forefathers would have already started something.” The Confederate White Knights also believe that the Affordable Healthcare Act is the best form of “communism”, and that while slavery was bad, “things for the United States started to go wrong with Lincoln. … He was the first liberal president.”

Being a former history major, I am not going to advocate that everyone know every detail concerning our nation’s short history. However, every person should be able to appreciate the events that transpired in arguably our second most important (first being the Revolutionary War – duh) event ever. Demonstrations such as the ones exhibited by the Confederate White Knights should be allowed to occur (There is that one document which allows for free speech and protest, you know.), but they should be drowned out by demonstrations exhibiting proper remembrance of such an important event. As George Santayana so eloquently stated “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. If that is the case, I dread the day in which America forgets that the 80’s were just a bad time.

    New Presidential Seal

Everyone in the United States knows that one of the reasons we have become one of the most powerful nations to inhabit the earth in all of history is because we have fantastic presidential leaders. What is not known was why exactly they are badass leaders. Was it because they were awesome diplomats? Or maybe because they bartered peace between 2 warring countries. No, it was because they kicked ass and took names.

Jason Heuser is an American artist from San Francisco who decided to put his patriotism and love for history into these amazing prints. He decided to show the true history of some of our most beloved Presidents. All of this artwork is also available to buy on his Etsy page for around $25. Check out his Deviant Art page too for more great awesomeness.

You know, I do a lot of these types of posts, but I cannot remember one that I have been more excited to do. I was nearly giddy while writing this up. From Kennedy’s robot unicorn on the moon, to Reagan’s uzi that says Gipper on the side, I was laughing the entire time I wrote this. I really hope Jason is able to do more of these pieces. Oh, and I also threw in a print of how Ben Franklin really discovered electricity….he took it from Zues’ cold dead hands.

“George Washington was known for many things…being a great general, having wooden dentures (okay they weren’t really wooden, cutting down the cherry tree, and being nicknamed the ‘Destroyer of Villages.’ But what many don’t know is he was an avid zombie hunter. This is a picture of one of his many adventures out into the night to give some ‘Liberty and Justice to all.’”

    John F. Kennedy Alien Hunter

    (image)

“In 1963 after the alleged JFK assassination, John F. Kennedy was sent the moon to be the first man to walk on the moon. This was kept secret to us, and we were made to believe he was assassinated on November 22nd, 1963. Upon arrival his mission was to clear the moon of any alien life to make future moon landings easy and safe. He lived on the moon for 26 years hunting and slaying aliens until NASA lost communication….his death has still not been confirmed however and many believe hes still murdering aliens today.”

    Teddy Roosevelt VS. Bigfoot

“He’s one of America’s most bad-ass presidents….Teddy Roosevelt. Not only did Teddy Roosevelt give a speech with a bullet in his chest, but what many people don’t know is he slaughtered many bigfoot in his time…this is a picture of one of those events.”

    Thomas Jefferson Vs Gorilla

    FDR Battle Master

    (image)

“FDR, arguable one of the best presidents of all time. Known for his program “The New Deal” and other such accomplishments, what is not not known is his many victories in battle against many different types of enemies. FDR possessed great power and technology as can be seen from his transforming wheel chair in which he slayed many foes.”

    Andrew Jackson Alien Slayer

“In the year 2055 the world was invaded, humanity sat on the brink of destruction the world governments united and sent agents back in time to get the best general we’d ever known…Andrew Jackson and throughout his life he did a lot of cool shit, dueled people…a lot which is how he ended up with a musket ball in his chest pretty much exactly like Tony Stark. Went to war, gambled, etc, etc . This is a war portrait as he stands victorious in yet another battle.”

    Ben Franklin VS. Zeus

    (image)

“In 1752 before Ben Franklin invented pizza, Gameboy, the iPad2 or Mexican food, he was contemplating how to conquer electricity. Being the genius he was he decided go get it at its source, this being Zeus. Strapping himself to a kite, and equipping some homemade lightning claws he ascended through the clouds and into the realm of the Gods to battle it out with Zeus. This is a painting capturing the exact moment the battle started.”

  • Happy Presidents Day 2012! : Twitter Reactions

Happy Presidents Day everyone! Today we honor all the men who have occupied the position of United States President. Originally, the holiday was enacted by congress to pay tribute to George Washington, the first president, and the first American citizen to be recognized with a civic holiday. In the past, most businesses and schools were closed on this day, but today it is a day celebrated by sales and promotion rather than one observed in reflection and admiration. Look for Washington’s portrait in shopping malls and on car lots promising extra value and unprecedented deals!

It should seem like a natural progression to any of us who are patriots; to support America is to support industry. We are a nation of consumers and there is no better way to celebrate than to spend our hard-earned American Dollars!

Let’s see what’s on people’s minds this Presidents Day 2012:

I don’t know if this is a day people get excited about anymore, or if they ever did. I do know that life would not be the same for anyone in this country if we didn’t have Lincoln or Washington. Celebrate what others have done for you and ask yourself what you can give them in return.

  • Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter Trailer Releases, Grab Your Ax

It was only a matter of time before a movie was made, based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s New York Time’s bestselling book, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. The book which spawned this legendary cover (which poses as a decoration in my house).

    Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter

The movie has been in the works for some time now, and now we have an official trailer to enjoy. There’s a lot of Lincoln action, mixed in with some old time US imagery. With my favorite moment occurring at the (1:06) mark.

The reaction on Twitter seems to be divided, with some who ‘get it’, while others are frowning upon it…

While I’m in league with those who are beyond excited for the movie, I still scoff at Hollywood’s need to feature licensed music in every trailer they release. I love Johnny Cash as much as the next guy/gal; it just doesn’t get me excited for this movie.
