  • ABC Shows Canceled: No Happy Ending For Happy Endings

As the season draws to a close for most TV shows, the time has come once again to see which shows will continue another year and which are on the chopping block. This can be a very nerve wracking time for fans of many borderline shows (not to mention the cast and crew and production staff). While some shows are a lock for renewal, many eye their ratings numbers warily, and wonder if they’ll be around another year.

Well, ABC has announced which of their shows won’t be coming back next year. Five programs got the ax this year. Topping the list is Happy Endings, which has had difficulties find an audience despite solid reviews from critics. In addition, the network has chosen not to renew thriller Red Widow, How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life, crime drama Body of Proof with Dana Delaney, and sitcom Malibu Country staring Reba McIntire.

On the bright side, ABC’s most popular shows will be coming back next year. Fans of shows like Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, Once Upon A Time, Suburgatory, Revenge, and more can rest easy knowing their favorite shows will be around for at least one more year.

  • Matt Lauer: ABC Rumored to Have Courted Him For Daytime Show With Katie Couric

Ever since Ann Curry was forced out of her position at the Today Show last year, the show has been losing viewers and Matt Lauer’s reputation has been taking a nose dive. Whether or not Lauer was responsible for Curry’s firing isn’t clear, but her replacement with the younger Savannah Guthrie rubbed fans the wrong way.

This week, yet another wrinkle in the tale of the Today Show anchor drama has been revealed.

New York Magazine this week published an expose on Lauer and the Today Show that details the anchor’s flirtation with jumping ship from NBC to ABC. According to the report, Lauer was speaking with ABC to develop a daytime TV show hosted by Katie Couric and himself, just like the old days. This was around the time rumors of Lauer being replaced by Ryan Seacrest were making the rounds. Lauer was to be a host on the daytime show and an on-air news personality for ABC, which the network hoped would help Good Morning America beat the Today Show.

The talks evidently broke down because Lauer ended them. He had been offered a substantial contract to stay on at the Today Show, where Curry would soon be out.

  • ABC Reportedly Working on a Live Streaming App

ABC Reportedly Working on a Live Streaming App

ABC is reportedly working on a live streaming app that will be the first of its kind from any of the major U.S. broadcasters.

According to the New York Times, the new app is currently in development. It would allow users to live stream ABC programming – daytime, primetime, and more – to their mobile devices and tablets. All users would have to do is log in through their cable provider.

The app could launch as early as later this year.

Considering that Disney already has other streaming apps called Watch ESPN and Watch Disney, is wouldn’t be a shock if this new app launches as Watch ABC or something similar.

With this move, ABC would be on the cutting edge of content distribution. Of course, one of the main reasons for any network to develop streaming apps is to attempt to create a space where they can broadcast more ads.

ABC isn’t the only major network that’s looking to expand their reach to more mobile users. Last week, CBS launched a new app that features full-episode streaming of much of their daytime, primetime, and late night content. But that app only streams shows on a delay – a far cry from what ABC is reportedly trying to do with a truly live app experience.

Speaking of Disney-owned properties, Hulu just tapped a new acting CEO. SVP of Content Any Forssell will fill the vacant seat, left by Jason Kilar when he steps down later this month.

  • All My Children, One Life To Live To Return Via Hulu, iTunes

All My Children, One Life To Live To Return Via Hulu, iTunes

Nearly two years ago, news came out that ABC had canceled the long-running soap operas All My Children and One Life To Live. ABC had decided to replace them with food shows, saying the decision was guided by “extensive research into what today’s daytime viewers want and the changing viewing patterns of the audience.”

If daytime TV viewers didn’t want All My Children and One Life To Live, you could have fooled me, because when the news broke, the angry comments flooded the web.

Angry fans can find joy once again, because both shows are making a return, courtesy of Hulu. We have yet to see an official announcement, but TechCrunch is reporting that both will be back in shorter 30-minute episodes each weekday, starting in the spring on Hulu, as well as on iTunes and Prospect Park’s (the production company that licensed the soap operas from ABC) The Online Network, but Hulu will manage the ad sales and package them.

Prospect Park actually announced the shows’ return earlier this month, but didn’t mention Hulu or iTunes (via zap2it):

“We are pleased to confirm that Prospect Park is reviving the beloved soap operas, All My Children and One Life To Live as the anchor programs on The Online Network (TOLN). Today we are also pleased to confirm that Prospect Park has: 1) signed guild agreements with both SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) and the DGA (Directors Guild of America); 2) entered into a consulting agreement with Agnes Nixon the creator of All My Children and One Life to Live guaranteeing her active involvement; 3) hired Foz McDermott (coordinating producer Heroes) as TOLN’s head of production, Jennifer Pepperman (Director, One Life to Live) as Executive Producer on One Life to Live, and Ginger Smith (Producer, All My Children) as Executive Producer on All My Children; and 4) arranged the necessary financing to begin production in February on both All My Children and One Life To Live.

Online video has become quite the savior for fans of canceled TV shows, showing that if there is big enough demand, your old favorites might have a chance at returning. Netflix has managed to pull off what many of us thought would never happen, in bringing back the cult favorite Arrested Development, which returns in May. Now, long-running soap operas are finding their way back to fans in what should be a happy moment for a lot of people.

  • The Official Oscars App Expands To Android, Kindle

ABC announced today that the official Oscars app is now live, and for the first time, it’s available for Android. Specifically, it’s available on Android 4.0+ devices, including the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Note 10.1 and GSIII, as well as the new Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD.

As before, the app is available for iOS as well.

The app was developed by the Academy and Disney/ABC’s digital media team, and includes the following features, as listed by ABC:

    • Magazine-style format featuring photos, videos and the latest social media buzz.
    • Viewers can watch the live Backstage Pass experience in two different modes, Watch or Direct. In Watch mode, viewers will be guided through the live behind-the-scenes show. In the Direct mode, viewers can select the cameras they want to experience.
    • Live video grid allows viewers the ability to watch all available cameras simultaneously or zero in on one.
    • Once in a camera view, a ticker will display over the video updating viewers to what is happening on other cameras. Fans will be aware when their favorite actor enters another view, allowing them the opportunity to navigate between cameras.

“Our goal is to create a really full, immersive experience leading up to, during and after the Oscars,” said Karin Gilford, SVP of Digital Media for ABC Television Network. “Last year, we saw a huge increase in the number of people using the app. With its availability now on the Android platform we look forward to bringing even more people into the Oscar experience. We want this to be the next best thing to attending the show itself.”

“We’re always looking for ways to bring fans closer to the show and this app provides a unique and fun way to do that,” added Josh Spector, Managing Director of Digital Media and Marketing for the Academy. “More fans than ever will be able to enjoy the full Oscar experience now that our app is available to Droid users.”

The Oscars will air on Sunday, February 24 on ABC, with coverage beginning at 7PM Eastern. You can find the Android app on Google Play.

  • The Oscars Release a Bunch of Seth MacFarlane Promos

Today, host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone were on hand to announce the nominations for the 85th annual Academy Awards. Nine films are vying for this year’s Best Picture award, including Argo, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Silver Linings Playbook, and Amour. It’s a big year for Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, which garnered 12 nominations.

Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane will host the ceremony, which will air February 24th on ABC. They’re wasting no time with the promos, dropping five on the Oscar YouTube channel this afternoon (sure to run on ABC networks, too).

    Here’s all five:

  • Dick Clark to be Celebrated on “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve”

ABC announced today that its yearly New Year’s Rockin’ Eve countdown will this year feature a tribute to Dick Clark, who died in April of this year at age 82.

A two-hour special will air at 8 pm EST before the yearly countdown show begins. Titled New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Celebrates Dick Clark, the show will be hosted by Jenny McCarthy from Times Square, and by Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie in Los Angeles. It will feature American Bandstand clips and other famous Dick Clark moments from the past half-century. The performances will reach back as far as Johnny Cash in 1959, Sonny & Cher in 1965, and The Doors in 1967. Other featured artists include ABBA, Beach Boys, Blondie, James Brown, Neil Diamond, Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Stevie Wonder.

Though Dick Clark rang in the new year on network television for four decades, a stroke in 2004 left him unable to perform his hosting duties as he had in the past. Just days after Dick Clark’s passing in April, ABC announced that Ryan Seacrest will be taking over as the host of the new year’s countdown. The news didn’t go over well on Twitter, though that didn’t deter ABC or Seacrest.

Following the two-hour Dick Clark tribute, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2013 will begin at 10 pm EST and run until around 2 am.

  • ABC News 24 Will Stream Broadcasts Live On YouTube

Google announced that Australian television news program ABC News 24 wil is now streaming its broadcasts live on YouTube, which is a first for news and TV broadcasting in Australia.

Users will not only ge able to watch the broadcast live from YouTube, but they will be able to embed the live broadcasts within their Facebook or Twitter accounts.

“As a result, it’s now much easier to share live events and breaking news coverage as it happens by putting the live link directly into your status update or tweet,” says Kieran Ricketts of ABC News Online, writing on the Google Australia blog.

“ABC News 24 can now push out updates from its Facebook and Twitter pages with live video attached – the live video content now accompanies the update that points to it,” says Ricketts. “Visitors to ABC News’ flagship YouTube channel have immediate access to live video alongside highlights from ABC News’ broad range of coverage and programs on demand. Aussies will be able to choose to watch the up-to-date live coverage of ABC News 24 or access video-on-demand highlights to review their favourite news moments from the past, all from the same page.”

I’m guessing that we’ll see more and more of this type of live broadcasting from television networks all over the world as time goes on.

  • Avengers 2 To Be Written, Directed By Joss Whedon

Avengers 2 To Be Written, Directed By Joss Whedon

Disney reportedly announced during its Q3 earnings call that Joss Whedon, writer and director of The Avengers, will return to helm the film’s sequel. He will also be involved in the creation of a Marvel TV show for ABC.

Variety reporter Marc Graser broke the news:

He followed that up with some additional tweets about Disney’s comments, including:

The Hollywood Reporter also shared the following statement from Marvel Studios:

“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”

The Avengers 2 should be an instant hit, especially with Whedon on board. The first one grossed a reported $1.46 billion. Given Whedon’s success in television, it’s also hard to imagine that the TV series will be a dud.

Scanning the web, it’s clear that fans of the first film are excited about Whedon’s attachment, but not just for the Avenger sequel and the show, but for his creative input that may surface throughout other Marvel film projects through 2015.

  • Netflix Updates Web Video Player

    Netflix Updates Web Video Player

Netflix has just launched an updated web video player, according to the company blog. The new interface incorporates icons instead of words – below is a screenshot:

    netflix video player

First, Netflix was wise in using ABC’s “LOST” as the template for its screenshot, as it is the best show ever made. Incidentally, Netflix extended their content deal with ABC last November, making sure LOST can be watched indefinitely, which is good for everyone.

    Other new features include:

    – The size of the controls now scales, making it easier to use the player on large screens, for example if you connect your computer to your TV
    – Similarly, the player will scale down to smaller windows, which is useful if you want to watch something while working in another window. Also, the video now stretches to the full window in the browser
    – Full screen mode now has all the features of browser mode so you can view season/episode information and change to the next episode when watching a TV show
    – Pausing the video now shows more information about the title

Here’s a shot of the old interface:

    netflix video player

The new look is more streamlined, though Michael Spiegelman, director of product innovation for the Website and Tablet at Netflix, points at that “This (the new GUI) might take a little time to get used to, but we think it will be intuitive once you start using the controls.”

  • New Bachelorette Season Features Less Hot Tubs, More Class

    New Bachelorette, new rules.

Since this season of the popular dating program will feature single mother Emily Maynard’s quest for love and affection, host Chris Harrison claims that some slight changes have been made to the show’s formula. However, just because there won’t be any wild and wacky sexual encounters or late night hot tub trysts this time around doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tune in.

Although Maynard, who was engaged to Nascar driver Ricky Hendrick before his death in 2004, can be seen wearing a bikini in what Harrison states are “exotic locales”, she wanted to be portrayed as a mother first and foremost. That means no hanky panky, no frat humor, and no clandestine meetings with potential suitors after the lights go out. Sorry, primetime perverts. You’ll have to get your fix elsewhere.

“Emily’s season is drastically different,” Harrison explained. “It changed the tone from Night 1. Throughout the show, it was always that underlying issue of, she’s a mom and is this guy ready for that? It’s not about just hopefully finding love and a husband, it’s about finding a father figure to [her daughter] Ricki.”

This isn’t the first time Maynard has attempted to find true love on television. She was the winner in the “Bachelor” season featuring Brad Womack. As is the story with most of these scenarios, Maynard and Womack eventually broke off their relationship, prompting the single mom to return to the small screen for another shot at love, romance, and, well, celebrity. After all, one doesn’t appear on TV if they don’t want the world to know who they are.

The season hasn’t wrapped production yet, so Harrison couldn’t say whether or not Maynard has found her true love. Not that he would, anyway. In order to find out if she’s bound for love or depression, you’ll have to tune into the program, which debuts tonight (May 14th) on ABC.

  • Krysten Ritter: Don’t Trust That Bitch

Krysten Ritter: Don’t Trust That Bitch

You may not recognize the name, but that could all change soon enough. Krysten Ritter is building an impressive television resume that probably includes at least one character you recognize, and her latest venture is the aptly-named ABC show “Don’t Trust The B– In Apartment 23”, which premieres tonight.

Ritter is a rare find; she describes herself as “not conventionally pretty”, yet sports the glossy black hair and ivory skin of a pin-up model. In fact, her bangs recall the likes of Bettie Page, perhaps the most famous pin-up of them all. Plus–rather importantly–the girl is funny. Her looks have gotten her typecast as the goth/druggie in several roles, but Ritter says this latest one has been fun to play because she gets to explore other sides of her talent.

The character, Chloe, is described by Ritter as the product of Holly Golightly and the devil; she scams and schemes her way through life, making enough enemies along the way to afford the show’s title. “Dawson’s Creek” alum James Van Der Beek co-stars, playing himself and Chloe’s best friend.

In perhaps one of her best roles, Ritter played addict Jane Margolis on AMC’s “Breaking Bad”, the girl who steals Jesse Pinkman’s heart and then goes for his bag of meth-produced cash. In a charming commercial for “Don’t Trust The B–In Apartment 23” in which various Chloe-victims talk about the vicious acts she committed against them, Bryan Cranston–who plays lead character Walter White on “Breaking Bad”–makes a cameo (and an inside joke, for you BB fans).

Viewers seem to be eagerly anticipating the show:

  • RIP Patrick Dempsey Trending on Twitter

It seems someone is always fake dying on the internet. A couple of weeks ago it was Justin Bieber and now the phrase ‘RIP Patrick Dempsey’ is trending on Twitter.

To be clear, the actor is alive and well.

Patrick Dempsey is most known for playing a doctor on the ABC series ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. Some tweets are claiming the rumor started when the Grey’s Anatomy Twitter account was hacked, but only a fake Grey’s Anatomy Twitter account shows any evidence of such a thing. My theory? It’s a brilliant marketing ploy from ABC to promote the return of the show on April 5 after a two-week hiatus. And it’s working.

Let’s start off this Twitter roll with some words from the man himself:

  • Netflix To Possibly Acquire ABC’s “The River”

Netflix, who has been in talks with 20th Century FOX regarding taking over its recently cancelled dinosaur drama Terra Nova, might also have its eye on ABC’s The River, which also faces cancellation.

Reports state that Netflix has been in talks with ABC Studios about continuing to produce The River, an Amazonian found-footage/paranormal/action/horror series, for its streaming service. Still, it has been stressed that the conversations regarding the series are just exploratory, and a facet of a larger deal.

The Steven Spielberg-produced series never gained much ground while on ABC, achieving only a 1.4 18-49 rating in its Tuesday finale – but it’s the sort of show, a genre serial, that works well on streaming providers.

While The River has yet to be officially cancelled, this is a likely conclusion. And since ABC owns ABC Studios, which produces the series, it wouldn’t stand in the way with any potential deals with Netflix.

  • Yahoo’s comScore February Rankings Triumph Explained!

comScore’s online video rankings for February were released earlier today and perhaps most notable in the list was Yahoo’s meteoric ascent to the second-highest brand when, in previous months, Yahoo was nowhere to be found on comScore’s listings.

Now, though, Yahoo has shared the secret to their online video success: it’s owed to a partnership between the web company and ABC News that was announced all the way back in October 2011. On a blog post earlier today, ABC News Digital Senior Vice President Joe Ruffolo said, “The relationship is even more successful than we had dreamt.”

Among U.S. news sites, the Yahoo-ABC pair now tops the list of online videos among news outlets.

The Huffington Post provided the following video of Ruffolo explaining the success of the partnership.

  • JonBenet Ramsey’s Father Calls Pageants “Bizarre”

JonBenet Ramsey, whose 1996 murder has never been solved, was only six years-old when she died.

Before that, she had been heavily involved in beauty pageants and had won several titles. After her death, her parents were considered prime suspects but have since been cleared of any suspicion of wrong-doing. However, many people still feel that pushing their child into pageants was a form of bad parenting in itself, and now her father has admitted he agrees. Twitter reactions varied from support to disbelief.

John Ramsey was asked by ABC on where his daughter’s killer might be: ‘”He’s either alive, dead or in prison, and one of those three.” #fail(image) 48 minutes ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

John Ramsey has written a new book detailing the story and other details of his life, titled “The Other Side Of Suffering“. He talks about his book with ABC news, and about the beauty competitions his daughter took part in. He says the influx of “kiddie pageant” reality shows on television today disturb him, and that his wife and JonBenet only looked for the fun in them without taking them too seriously.

  • Amazon’s LoveFilm Gets Yet Another Deal, This Time With ABC

Amazon’s LoveFilm Gets Yet Another Deal, This Time With ABC

Amazon has been announcing a slew of streaming content deals for its UK Netflix-like property LoveFilm. This time it’s one with ABC TV.

Thanks to a partnership with Disney UK, LoveFilm will offer on-demand streaming access to ABC Studios’ library of network and cable series.

This includes shows like Castle, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Happy Endings, Grey’s Anatomy, Ghost Whisperer and Brothers & Sisters. Shows will be launched as full seasons after their first run on UK pay and/or free TV, Amazon says. Previous seasons of some series will be available to members before the next season airs in the UK.

Other recent LoveFilm streaming deals include Sony, BBC and ITV.

Now, competition is significantly higher for LoveFilm, as Netflix just entered the UK market last week.

  • ABC To Advertise In NYC Taxies

ABC To Advertise In NYC Taxies

Starting on January 1, 2012 a new agreement will take effect, which will allow ABC to begin selling ads and providing clips of entertainment to Creative Mobile Technologies (CMT) infused New York City cabs. At the moment, that’s about 6,600 cabs that will receive ABC’s content.

Cabs will be able to offer weather, news, and news-you-can-use features, which will run in a loop.

Dave Davis, President and General Manager of WABC-TV in New York stated that this, “significantly expands the growth opportunities ahead for our taxi TV programming and advertising business,” according to Deadline.

The deal also encompasses cabs located in Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Anaheim, Kansas City, Denver, Columbus, and Charlotte. With those additional cabs, that brings the total to around 10,000 cabs where ABC content will be shown.

According to the companies, this deal will “lay the groundwork for additional expansion into new markets… in the coming months“.

  • Yahoo and ABC News Team Up On News Content and Advertising

Yahoo and ABC News Team Up On News Content and Advertising

Yahoo announced this morning that it has entered a strategic alliance with ABC News to combine Yahoo’s massive reach, content breadth and technology with ABC’s brands, anchors and global news-gathering operation.

    Here’s what this entails:

    • ABC News will become the premier news provider on Yahoo News
    • ABC’s GoodMorningAmerica.com launches on Yahoo today at GMA.yahoo.com
    • New original web series featuring ABC News anchors. This will start with programs called “Newsmakers,” “Around the World with Christiane Amanpour,” and “This Could Be Big.” Others will follow in the coming months.
    • The editorial teams of both media organizations will work together to develop news content.
    • The sales teams will also work together on advertising solutions.
    • Both will retain editorial control of their own properties.

ABC News and Yahoo - Newsmakers

“Yahoo! is committed to building the richest set of premium and personalized content experiences for our users. Our deep collaboration with ABC News further strengthens Yahoo! as the No. 1 online news source, greatly enhancing our already robust news content,” said Ross Levinsohn, executive vice president of Americas at Yahoo. “ABC News and Ben Sherwood’s vision is completely symbiotic with ours; together we can create highly engaging experiences for more than 100 million users a month that will set the standard for the industry.”

“This relationship will give ABC News an unrivaled ability to reach across the Web, combining Yahoo!’s vast distribution and cutting-edge technology with our award-winning journalism.  For years, we’ve proudly proclaimed that more Americans get their news from ABC News than any other source,” said ABC News President Ben Sherwood.  “Going forward, we will greatly expand this leadership by building a connection with a whole new online audience.”

Clearly Yahoo isn’t letting that lack of a CEO slow them down.

  • New NBC Sitcom Experiences Viral Marketing Failure

There’s a thought that no press is bad press, and while that maybe true for folks like Marilyn Manson, someone from the land of music who was as concerned with shocking as he was entertaining the masses, it’s not true for yet-to-be consumed items that want to get off to a good start with would-be consumers. If your product has been treated like rancid meat before it hits the shelves, or in this case, the television sets, the product may be dead on arrival, never getting a real chance to succeed.

That unpleasant reality is something that faces an upcoming sitcom that’s scheduled to appear on NBC’s Fall lineup. Based on the reaction of the Twitterverse, NBC’s new rom-com sitcom, Whitney may have failed before its first viewer has even seen it.

In order to promote Whitney, NBC put up a bunch of billboards in the major cities, all with the idea of spreading the word and catching the eyes of folks who are looking for that special show to call their own. One of the billboards, which comes courtesy of the Daily Billboard Facebook page, leads this article, and to say the Twitter reaction to it and the others was quite derisive is something of an understatement:

    Whitney Billboard

Of course, the Twitter hashtag that followed these reactions–#RejectedWhitneyPromo–is a definite clue as to which way the reaction was leaning. As pointed out by Jake Kroeger over at the Nerdist, which has since removed the article in question, the reaction to these Whitney billboards was, in a word, snarky.

The thing is, it wasn’t just random viewers who were reacting negatively. It was people who could be considered peers of the show’s leads. From the removed article, which is still alive in my Google Reader:

If you go check #RejectedWhitneyPromo right now, you’ll find comedians, writers, etc. of all levels of notoriety bashing the show without the first episode having even made it to air.

And so, we checked, and guess what? Kroeger’s right. Reaction to the upcoming Whitney, thanks in large part to those maligned billboards, is harsh. So much so, in fact, the idea of the show being doomed before it even airs seems like a real possibility. It doesn’t help that the early buzz concerning Whitney is also of the “meh” kind.

    From AVClub’s Fall Season preview:

To put it bluntly, Whitney’s pilot is clumsy. Sure, the show wants to be edgy and different, but a huge chunk of the first episode involves Cummings in a sexy nurse’s uniform—a desperate appeal to the lowest common denominator that sitcoms don’t usually resort to until a little further down the line. As a character, Whitney says a lot of unrelated witty things, but Cummings the real-life showrunner hasn’t figured out what she wants the character to say in a broader sense.

Based on that, it would be surprising if Whitney survived its first season, but then again, and as Kroeger points out in his post, Two and Half Men is wildly successful, so predicting these things is not an exact science.

Nevertheless, as indicated, the early Twitter reaction to Whitney, powered via the #RejectedWhitneyPromo hashtag, and to the promotional content has not been pleasant, but this first one, well, it just makes me laugh:

If you don’t feel like reading all of that, just watch this mash-up promotional video for the upcoming show:

If that doesn’t get you in the mood, nothing will.

Now, I’m not entirely sure why Whitney is the only new fall show to be taking a beating like this. I mean, H8R sounds like absolute trash, but yet, it doesn’t have much of a Twitter presence, at least in regards to the venom Whitney is receiving.

Based on this, do you think Whitney has a fighting chance to make it to a second season or did NBC’s attempt at viral promotion blow the whole thing up before it even aired? I will say, however, based on the all the negative reaction, it’s almost impossible to not watch at least one segment of Whitney when it airs. From that perspective, maybe NBC didn’t fail after all.

  • Diane Sawyer Live-Tweets Her Jaycee Dugard Interview

ABC World News Anchor Diane Sawyer is new to the Twitterverse – quite new. Her first tweet came on Friday and over the weekend she has amassed 44 tweets. Sawyer didn’t choose to ease into the service, but rather jump right in with a live-tweeting session.

Last night, ABC aired her two-hour interview of Jaycee Dugard, the now 31-year-old woman who was kidnapped when she was just 11-years-old. She was taken near her home in South Lake Tahoe, California in 1991 and held captive by convicted rapist Phillip Garrido and his complicit wife Nancy.

Jaycee was discovered in 2009 after Garrido suspiciously emerged with Jaycee and the two girls that he had fathered with her over the course of her abduction. Authorities became suspicious when the two girls referred to him as “daddy” at the parole hearing, as they were under the impression that he had no children.

After hours of questioning with Jaycee Dugard, who was identified as “Alyssa” by Garrido, the truth came out and Garrido and his wife were arrested. Convicted of kidnapping, false imprisonment and rape, Garrido was sentenced to 431 years in prison and his wife 36 years to life.

The whole ordeal enthralled the nation, and last night Diane Sawyer sat down for the much anticipated special with Dugard.

She announced on Friday in her first tweet that she would be live-tweeting the special –

Firing up my thumbs… Thanks all for the welcome. Looking forward to live tweeting w you during #JayceeABC special. Sun 9-11p/E. 2 days ago via Twitter for iPhone · powered by @socialditto

She then kicked off the live-tweeting of the interview, which was taped earlier this weekend, with this tweet –

Big TV night @ABC : almost time for #JayceeABC special. Big night for me: first time live tweeting. Here goes! 12 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Here are some of the 40 or so tweets from Sawyer during the airing of the interview –

Sawyer mostly sent out original tweets, but she also interacted with other Twitter users, answering their tweets throughout the interview. Due to her live-tweeting of the special, Sawyer has grabbed up over 11,000 followers in a matter of days.

The interview relied heavily on information that’s a part of Jaycee Dugard’s new memoir “A Stolen Life.” The book doesn’t hit shelves until Tuesday but has shot up to #1 on Amazon thanks to the Diane Sawyer special last night.

    Here’s a clip of the interview –
