  • Amazon Snags ‘Vikings’ Series, MGM Movies for Prime Instant Video

Amazon Snags ‘Vikings’ Series, MGM Movies for Prime Instant Video

Amazon and MGM have just announced an expanded licensing agreement that will bring a bunch of new content – both TV and movies – to Prime Instant Video.

The deal makes MGM Television’s historical series Vikings, which premiered on the HISTORY channel earlier this year, available to stream for free for all Prime customers.

Vikings saw some success in the ratings, and was recently renewed for a 10-episode second season.

“We’re excited that Prime Instant Video is now the video subscription home of Vikings, a series we know our customers love in both the U.S. and abroad,” said Brad Beale, Director of Digital Video Content Acquisition for Amazon. “Adding a collection of great MGM films, along with Vikings, is an example of how we’re continuously working to offer our Prime members some of the best content available anywhere.”

As he said – the films. Amazon says that “a number” of MGM films are now available to stream for free, including classics like Fargo, Platoon, Annie Hall, and Hoosiers.

“MGM is thrilled to further our relationship with Amazon by offering the epic series Vikings, as well as titles from MGM’s library with Amazon Prime members,” said John Bryan, President, Domestic Television Distribution, MGM. “We are always looking for opportunities to bring our content to new audiences in innovative ways, which is exactly what this partnership delivers.”

Last year, a deal between Amazon and MGM brought a ton of classic movies to the Prime Instant Video service.

  • Amazon Marketplace Sellers Get Access To High-Traffic Amazon Holiday Deal Pages

Amazon Marketplace Sellers Get Access To High-Traffic Amazon Holiday Deal Pages

Thousands of Amazon Marketplace sellers are getting the opportunity to have their products appear on high-traffic holiday deal pages on Amazon.com throughout the holiday season, opening up the possibility for a big increase in traffic and sales.

Amazon announced on Monday that sellers are being invited to offer holiday deals to be featured on such pages, including the Today’s Deals page, Gold Box Today’s Deal page, Black Friday and Cyber Monday deal pages, and category holiday pages. As the company notes, the most popular holiday categories (like electronics and toys) will have numerous deals each day from various sellers all season long.

Amazon Marketplace VP Peter Faricy said, “It will now be easier than ever for our millions of customers to find popular and unique holiday products from our sellers. We know that customers expect to find the lowest prices on Amazon and love browsing the holiday deal pages for great bargains. We are excited that for the first time ever our sellers will be able to showcase their unique and high quality items on the holiday promotion shopping pages.”

Michael Silberstein, operations manager for NYC-based electronics retailer Focus Camera, said, “Our Gold Box Deal promotion earlier this year was an outstanding success. We listed a popular camera at an unbeatable price that was showcased on the premier placement of Amazon Today’s Deal page for several hours. As a result, we received an enormous increase in sales during the promotion, especially for an item priced over $200.”

“The Gold Box Deal promotion helped us sell approximately 30 percent of the cameras we had in stock in only a few hours,” he added. “Considering our large inventory, the amount of orders we fulfilled greatly exceeded our expectations. The Gold Box Deal attracted so many customers that we can’t wait for our next chance to participate during the holidays. Amazon is undoubtedly our most important sales channel during the holiday season. If our items are listed on Amazon and the price is right, sales are guaranteed.”

Gold Box features are shown to all Amazon customers with an account, and new customers see Gold Box “Quick Picks” a few days after their first purchase. These deals include a daily deal, a selection of “best deals,” and lightning deals, which pair a single item with a limited number of coupons.

Many others should be feeling similar effects throughout the season. According to Amazon, over 2 million sellers experienced record holiday growth during the holiday season last year. In the U.S. alone, unit growth increased over 40% year-over-year.

Stu Eisenman, president of Delaware-based E-Revolution Ventures, said, “We experienced a tremendous increase in sales for the products we’ve offered as Best Deal or Gold Box Deals. Not only do our sales increase for that item but the deal brings attention and increased popularity to the product that lasts well beyond the promotional deal. As a smaller retailer we were never able to offer our customers the same shipping savings as larger competitors. By participating in Amazon’s FBA program, we can take advantage of the economies of scale. Through the FBA program we’re able to leverage Amazon’s reputation for customer service into increased sales. We can focus on analyzing which items are hot sellers during the holiday season and take steps to ensure ample quantities are available.”

There are concerns about online spending going into this holiday season. eBay, which released its earnings report last week, gave some less than stellar guidance for the season, and according to the New York Times, online retailers are worried about uncertainty created by the government shutdown.

Amazon will release its report this Thursday. We’ll see what kind of guidance they give.

  • Kindle Fire HDX Ships Today, 16/32GB Models Already Backordered

Late last month, Amazon announced its next generation of Kindle Fire tablets – the Kindle Fire HDX. Much like the new Nexus 7, the new Kindle Fire HDX sports a higher resolution than its predecessor and some blazing fast specs. Now it’s available to order, but you might have to wait a bit to get yours.

Amazon announced that the Kindle Fire HDX is now shipping to those who preordered the tablet. You can also purchase the tablet now, but the 16GB and 32GB variants are backordered until October 25. It’s not that long of a wait, but it still speaks volumes of the Kindle Fire’s popularity.

“With a beautiful 323 ppi perfect-color HDX display, 3x the processing power, 2x the memory, 4x the graphics performance, and Fire OS 3.0, we think customers are going to love the new Kindle Fire HDX,” said Peter Larsen, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “We can’t wait to get this tablet into our customers’ hands.”

So, what makes the Kindle Fire HDX so special compared to other similar tablets on the market? For one, it will probably be the most powerful 7-inch tablet for the foreseeable future. Whereas Google opted to use the older Snapdragon S4 Pro in its new Nexus 7, Amazon equipped its tablet with the brand new Snapdragon 800 CPU.

Outside of specs, the Kindle Fire HDX also has a leg up on the competition with its new Mayday button. When pressed, an Amazon tech support technician will pop up on your screen and walk you through whatever problem you may be facing. They can even take limited control of your tablet to show you exactly where any function or app may be. The service is available 24/7, 365 days a year and it’s absolutely free.

As I mentioned above, the Kindle Fire HDX is currently backordered until October 25, but that only applies to the 16 and 32GB models. The 64GB model, which retails for $309, is still available and even eligible for Saturday delivery if you order within the next 8 hours.

Of course, the Kindle Fire HDX isn’t the only new tablet from Amazon this year. The retailer will also be releasing the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″ on November 7. The 16GB model will retail for $379 whereas the 64GB model will retail for $479.

  • Amazon Suggests That A New Apple TV Is Coming Next Week

Apple confirmed earlier this week that it will be holding a media event on October 22. The company is expected to reveal a new iPad and iPad Mini at the event, but a recent Amazon listing suggests we’ll see a new Apple TV as well.

AppleInsider reports that Amazon France and Amazon Germany have both sold out of the current generation Apple TV. Now, that’s not all that surprising as tech products, especially those from Apple, will sell out every now and then. What makes this listing suspect, however, is the date in which Amazon expects to have it back in stock.

Amazon Pretty Much Confirms That A New Apple TV Is Coming Next Week

Even if you can’t read German, you can tell that the listing says the Apple TV will be back in stock on October 23. That’s only one day after Apple’s event on October 22, and Apple generally launches products like the Apple TV a day after its unveiling.

Now, this is not conclusive evidence that a new Apple TV is coming next week. After all, this is Amazon, not Apple. The retailer does have a history of conveniently selling out of products right before a new one is announced, but that usually only applies to its own Kindle tablets. For it know that Apple will be introducing a new Apple TV next week isn’t out of the question, but it is unexpected.

Even if this is purely a coincidence, there’s still a pretty good chance that Apple will be unveiling the new Apple TV next week. After all, the company says that it still has “a lot to cover.” That presumably means that we’ll be seeing more than just an iPad and iPad Mini refresh. In fact, I suspect that we’ll see refreshes for almost everything in Apple’s stable of hardware products next week.

For now though, you might want to hold off on buying that new Apple TV. It would be such a waste to buy the current model, which is still available via Amazon US, only to see Apple announcing a new one a few days later.

  • Amazon Now Shipping Wine to NY, MI, AZ, & LA

Amazon Now Shipping Wine to NY, MI, AZ, & LA

Shipping alcohol across state lines is a tricky business, so you would expect that Amazon’s Wine Marketplace venture would continually be adding new, eligible locations – little by little.

And that’s exactly what’s happening. Today, Amazon has announced that they can now ship wine to four new states – New York, Michigan, Arizona, and Louisiana. That brings the total number of states where Amazon can ship wine to 20 (plus the District of Columbia) – Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

Amazon first launched their new Wine Marketplace back in November of 2012 with 12 states on board. Customers can browse wines from over 700 individual sellers across the country, offering over 5,000 individual wines.

The addition of these four new markets arrives at just the right time for Amazon (and the participating wineries).

“The holiday season is a busy time, and it’s a huge time saver for millions of customers to have access to thousands of high-quality wines while they’re shopping for that special gift on Amazon. We’re excited for our customers to be able to browse our vast selection of boutique and prestigious labels through the Amazon Wine store,” said Peter Faricy, vice president for Amazon Marketplace. “Our customers tell us they enjoy our wine-country selection and the convenience of finding detailed information in one place. We want to connect customers with wine sellers around the country and provide a destination where they can learn about and purchase wines directly from great wineries on Amazon.”

Who doesn’t need a drink (or 700) during the holidays?

Earlier this year, Amazon added Texas to the list of wine-producing states inside their marketplace.

If you’re wondering why your state isn’t able to get wine shipments via Amazon’s Wine Marketplace, well, here’s why:

When you order wine on Amazon.com, you’re ordering directly from a third-party wine seller. Each wine seller operates under its own set of permits and determines which states it will ship to.

Some states (like mine) do not allow for wine and other alcohol to be shipped directly from producer to consumer. It’s a dumb type of law, really, and it exists in way too many locations. For now, all you can do is call your local representation and get the slow wheels of congressional change a turnin’.

  • That Amazon Phone Might Be Made By HTC [Rumor]

For the past two years, one of the most consistent rumors in tech was that Amazon would launch a Kindle smartphone. Over those last two years, we’ve only ever heard more rumors as each suggested release date comes and goes. The latest rumor, however, may indicate that we’re finally getting somewhere.

The Financial Times reports that HTC has partnered with Amazon to create a line of Kindle smartphones that would be solely available through Amazon’s online retail portal. The report doesn’t go into any detail, but it does say that we may see Amazon’s first foray into the smartphone market as early as next year.

So, is this the real deal? Like most rumors, it’s hard to say at this point. I’m a firm believer in the Amazon smartphone, but it’s existence as nothing but a rumor over the last few years doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. It’s good news that Amazon may have finally found a hardware manufacturer partner, but that partner being HTC brings with its own set of worries.

Earlier this month, HTC announced that it took its first ever quarterly loss to the tune of $119 million. Before that, there were already whispers that the company’s efforts to secure a third place position behind Apple and Samsung weren’t exactly panning out. It didn’t help matters when the company spent $12 million on a weird ad campaign starring Robert Downey Jr.

Of course, the Amazon deal could also turn out to be incredibly profitable for HTC. The Kindle Fire has been the best selling item on Amazon for the past few years, and a high quality, yet cheap, Kindle smartphone could prove equally successful. After all, Amazon believes in selling its hardware at a loss and making the money back on sales through its physical and digital retail ecosystem. It remains to be seen if such a model would work on smartphones, but Amazon is the only company with the cojones to try.

  • Candy Crush Saga Brings Its Addictive Gameplay To Kindle Fire Devices

Candy Crush Saga has become a poster child of the mobile gaming explosion that’s been taking place since 2009. Unlike other games that were simply fads, Candy Crush Saga has enjoyed a nearly limitless amount of popularity since launching early last year. Since then, the game has migrated to nearly every single platform, except Amazon’s Kindle Fire. That changes today.

King announced today that Candy Crush Saga will devour the wallets of Kindle Fire players starting today in select territories. The match-3 puzzler will then be available all over the world on October 17, including the Kindle Fire HDX.

“We’ve had such positive feedback from players regarding King’s first Kindle Fire title, Bubble Witch Saga, that we now feel the time is right to bring Candy Crush Saga to Kindle Fire fans,” said Tommy Palm, Games Guru at King. “The Kindle Fire is a great device with which to enjoy the Candy Crush Saga gameplay and, with levels regularly added by the King team, we hope to keep Kindle Fire owners entertained every day.”

Candy Crush Saga will remain unchanged in its move to Kindle Fire, but the press release doesn’t mention if the Kindle Fire version will support Amazon’s digital currency – Amazon Coins. We’ve reached out to Amazon to find out and will update this story when we know more. UPDATE: It will support Amazon Coins at launch.

“We are thrilled that King is bringing their extremely popular title Candy Crush Saga to the Amazon Appstore and across the entire line up of Kindle Fire tablets, including the new Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX,” said Aaron Rubenson, Director of Amazon Appstore. “All Kindle Fire tablet owners can now explore the sweet and colourful world of Candy Crush, giving customers even more ways to engage with one of their favorite games.”

While Candy Crush Saga may be launching in select territories today, it doesn’t appear to be live on the U.S. Amazon Appstore yet. That probably means U.S. Kindle Fire owners will have to wait until October 17 to get their candy crushing on.

  • Amazon Reveals Its Holiday Toy List, Kindle Fire HDX Takes Top Spot In Tech

Christmas shopping is hard. Kids and adults alike never actually know what they want, but kids are especially difficult to shop for. Toys “R” Us already released its hot toy list to help parents out, and now Amazon is following suit.

Amazon announced today that its annual Holiday Toy List is now available for your viewing pleasure. It collects all the hot toys that your kids will want and then some. It also teamed up with Amazon Mom fans to pick out 10 toys from the top 10 trending toy categories of the year.

“Our goal is to offer an unmatched toy selection, but it’s also extremely important to us that our customers can easily find that one right toy at a great value,” says John Alteio, director of Toys and Games for Amazon. “The holidays are busy enough as it is, so we worked hard on our 2013 Holiday Toy List to create a simple and fun way for our customers to discover the toys that best suit their child’s individual interests. Put the kids to bed, kick up your feet and shop – we think you’ll find just the right gift to put a smile on their face this holiday season.”

So, what did Amazon Mom fans pick out for you children this year? Unsurprisingly, the leading toy in the Fun Tech Toys category is Amazon’s own Kindle Fire HDX 7″ tablet. The other toys on the list are made up of the usual subjects that vie for you attention every year, like Hot Wheels and board games.

    Here’s the full list:

  • Getting the Family Together: The Sneaky Snacky Squirrel Game
  • Hug the Earth Toys: Melissa & Doug Cook’s Corner Wooden Kitchen

  • Road Trip Approved: Playskool Showcam 2-in-1 Digital Camera and Projector

  • The above list doesn’t mention the top picks in video games, but there is a category. It’s full of the usual suspects, like Just Dance 2014, Skylanders SWAP Force and NBA 2K14. There’s not a PS4, Xbox One or Wii U in sight, but that’s probably to be expected this year.

Amazon also wants you to know that it will the be the exclusive carrier for a number of toys this holiday season, including the KidKraft Cranberry Retro Kitchen or the super awesome Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Slave 1 Spaceship Vehicle. Actually, all of the Star Wars Vintage Collection toys are amazing, and a lot of them seem to be exclusive to Amazon.

If you want even more ideas, check out Amazon’s Holiday Toy List in its entirety. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for upcoming Lightning Deals as Amazon will be discounting one toy off its list every few hours until mid-December. You’ll want to jump on these deals as soon as possible.

Just don’t buy your kid Lincoln Logs. They weren’t cool in the 70s and they’re not cool now.

  • Amazon Is Buying TenMarks

    Amazon Is Buying TenMarks

Amazon announced on Thursday that it has reached an agreement to acquire parent/teacher math resource company TenMarks.

TenMarks provides personalized online math instructions and videos at the K-12 levels.

  • Amazon Upgrades Whispersync For Voice For Kindle Books, Expands Available Titles

Amazon announced today that it has launched some upgrades to its Whispersync for Voice technology to make it easier for people reading Kindle books to switch between reading and listening to the Audible audiobook version on a smartphone or tablet.

For one, they’ve doubled the number of titles that support the technology. They’ve also launched a couple of new features.

Audible has a new “Matchmaker” feature, which will find titles in the Kindle user’s library that are Whispersync for Voice-enabled, and let users upgrade the books to have narration available with one click. They’ve also made some changes to the checkout process so the technology can be added to purchases with a click.

There are now over 30,000 titles that are ready to take advantage of Whispersync for Voice. More are being added every day, according to Amazon.

Audible founder and CEO Donald Katz said, “Whispersync for Voice customers continue to marvel at how this innovation has changed their lives. Some customers love the feature so much that they are now only buying books that are Whispersync for Voice-enabled. Whether commuting to work, driving to a soccer game, taking a road trip, exercising or making dinner, Whispersync for Voice allows people to continue enjoying books even when their eyes are busy, so a great story can continue throughout an active day. It truly is the future of reading.”

“Whispersync for Voice was invented by Amazon and Audible as a way to insert the myriad intellectual and emotional benefits of books into all available moments of a busy life,” says Amazon, who acquired Audible back in 2008. “To switch back and forth between reading and listening, all you need is a smartphone or tablet. Next time you buy a Kindle book, simply follow the Whispersync for Voice prompt on the purchase page to add the narration and activate the pairing (when available), and your ebook and audiobook will be automatically synchronized. When you stop reading the ebook on your Kindle, you can switch to listening to the corresponding audiobook on your smartphone once you select the title in your library—and the audio will begin wherever you left off in the text.”

The company points to a recent poll from SodaHead.com, which found that 83% said they wish they had more time to read.

  • ‘Login And Pay With Amazon’ Now Available To Ecommerce Sites

‘Login And Pay With Amazon’ Now Available To Ecommerce Sites

Amazon revealed a new payments product today called Login And Pay With Amazon, which lets websites allow people to do exactly what you would think (use their Amazon accounts to make purchases).

This is a product that many have been expected for years, but is finally coming to fruition.

“Amazon has more than 215 million active customer accounts,” said Tom Taylor, Vice President, Amazon Payments. “Login and Pay with Amazon enables companies to make millions of our customers their customers by inviting online shoppers with Amazon credentials to access their account information safely and securely with a single login.”

The feature works on tablets, mobile and desktop devices.

Sites that take advantage of the feature get low pricing and fraud protection from Amazon at no additional cost. Fees are assessed on a per-transaction basis, and are based on a percentage of the transaction amount plus a per transaction fee. The standard rate is 2.9% + $0.30 per-transaction for transactions of $10 or more.

They do offer volume discounts for transactions of $10 or more when the merchant processes an average transaction volume of $3,000 or more over three months. Here’s a look at the rates:

    Amazon Payments Rates

Discounts are offered for micropayments and nonprofit organizations. For transactions less than $9.99, the fee is 5.0% + $0.50 per transaction. Eligible nonprofits get a rate of 2.2% + $0.30 per transaction.

When a customer logs in, the merchant gets their name, email address and zip code, which can be used to create an account and personalize the user’s checkout experience. According to Amazon, it enables merchants to make it easy for customers to create a profile and view their order history, and helps the merchant recognize returning customers.

The feature has the potential to increase conversion rates if for no other reason than the familiarity with the Amazon brand and users having existing accounts. The mobile-readiness factor should help in that regard as well.

Amazon provides a set of widgets and APIs that merchants can embed on their sites and integrate with their back-end systems. It uses OAuth 2.0. It can be implemented for free. You can sign up here.

Obviously this puts Amazon in direct competition with PayPal, who meanwhile, is expanding its efforts in physical stores.

  • Amazon’s Appstore Developer Select Promises Better Discoverability

Discoverability on mobile is a major hurdle that any new mobile developer will have to overcome if they want to make it in an increasingly crowded industry. There usually isn’t a lot a new developer can do to overcome this, but Amazon might just have a solution for the developing willing to scratch its back.

Amazon announced today the launch of the Appstore Developer Select – a new program dedicated to helping developers increase their discoverability on the Amazon Appstore. As the name implies, developers will gain entry into the program upon earning the favor of Amazon by optimizing their apps for the Amazon Appstore and Fire OS.

Note that Amazon doesn’t say you must remain exclusive to their Appstore or Kindle Fire. All it’s asking for is the following:

To qualify for Appstore Developer Select, apps simply need to be optimized for the Amazon Appstore and Fire OS and include relevant Amazon APIs, such as GameCircle, In-App Purchasing, and Mobile Ads. Optimized apps are those that render natively in high definition (HD) and use the entire screen without distortion, pixilation or stretching.

In exchange for some simple optimization, Amazon will give developers “premium placement in the Amazon Appstore, 500,000 ad impressions on the Amazon Mobile Ad Network, and automatic inclusion in the Appstore Coins Rewards category.” For the latter, consumers who buy Appstore Developer Select apps will receive Amazon Coins which they can then use to buy anything in the Amazon Appstore.

All of this will be used to drive sales and conversion rates for games and apps on the Amazon Appstore:

“Mobile app developers have told us that getting their apps discovered across the numerous devices customers are using is one of their biggest challenges,” said Mike George, Vice President of Amazon Appstore, Games and Cloud Drive. “With the Appstore Developer Select program, we’re addressing these discoverability concerns by providing developers with enhanced merchandising opportunities. In addition, we’re helping drive sales by offering Coins rewards on high quality, engaging apps for customers.”

Developers who have already optimized their apps for the Amazon Appstore and Fire OS will be automatically entered into the program. For those who haven’t yet optimized their apps, you can submit optimized versions here. You might want to get on that soon as the impending Kindle Fire HDX launch will undoubtedly lead to millions of people checking out the Amazon Appstore this holiday season, and you don’t want to miss out on that improved discoverability.

  • Amazon’s Set-Top Box Reportedly Coming by Christmas

Amazon’s Set-Top Box Reportedly Coming by Christmas

The fact that Amazon is developing its own set-top streaming device shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Not only does Amazon have its own content library to promote (Amazon Instant Video), but the company’s also been stepping its toes into the original content production game through Amazon Studios. Plus, much of Amazon’s competition already has such a device on the market.

Amazon’s set-top box has been rumored since last Spring, and today we’re getting another report that the company is readying the device for a big holiday sales push.

The Wall Street Journal cites sources familiar with the matter who say that Amazon’s set-top content delivery device will be here soon, and it’ll look something like a Roku.

The sources also indicate that the device will stream content from a variety of providers, not just its own video offerings – which means we’ll be getting things like a Netflix app. No word yet on pricing.

Oh, and it’s apparently codenamed “Cinnamon.”

Speaking of names for said device, 9to5Google unearthed a new Canadian trademark filing that shows Amazon registering the name “Firetube,” an obvious portmanteau of the Kindle Fire and “tube,” as in the boob tube, as in TV. The generic description refers to a device that is capable of…

…transmitting, accessing, receiving, uploading, downloading, encoding, decoding, streaming, broadcasting, sharing, displaying, formatting, manipulating, organizing, book marking, tagging, storing, caching, and transferring electronic works…

So yeah, not much to go on there. Could the new set-top box be called the Firetube? Hang tight, folks. We’ll know pretty soon.

  • Amazon Greenlights a Trio of Comedy Pilots: Mozart in the Jungle, Transparent, and The Outlaws

Amazon has some more original pilots on the way, and they’re coming from some pretty big names.

First up, Mozart in the Jungle comes to us from writers Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom, The Darjeeling Limited) and actor Jason Schwartzman. Amazon describes it as a show about sex, drugs, and classical music.

“Many shows are in a single world; Mozart in the Jungle is an unusual show in that there are two worlds fused together. On one side is the high-level skill and sophistication that comes with classical music, and at the same time it’s a story that includes people rising up from the bottom, trying to make it in the big world. I love the sense of contrast, the high and the low, the refined and the more base – I hope audiences will love it too,” said Coppola. “Amazon has been incredibly supportive and they have given us their blessing to make this show. We are very much in harmony and we feel lucky to be working with a partner that is so in sync with us and what we want to do.”

The second new pilot is called The Outlaws, and it follows a professional football team – “from the perspective of both the players and the back office.” The Ouitlaws‘ team got former Giant Michael Strahan to come on as part of the creative team.

The final pilot in this round is called Transparent, and it was written and directed by Jill Soloway (Six Feet Under and United States of Tara). It’s being described as a “darkly comedic story about and L.A. family” and stars Jeffery Tambor.

“We are thrilled to be working on these pilots with such talented creators with passionate visions for new shows,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “We are excited to hear what customers think of the shows.”

Each pilot will be 30 minutes long. As always, Amazon Studios’ original pilots will be free to everyone, and use feedback will determine whether or not they get greenlit for an entire series run.

Recently, Amazon announced that they had added Cynthia Nixon, Amy Sedaris, and Wanda Sykes to Alpha House, one of the 5 original series (out of an initial 14 pilots) that Amazon greenlit back in May.

  • Amazon To Hire 70,000 Seasonal Employees

Amazon To Hire 70,000 Seasonal Employees

It’s now officially the holiday shopping season, and retailers are preparing themselves for the onslaught of shoppers by hiring on seasonal employees. Those looking for that kind of work will have plenty of options this holiday season, but one online retailer wants those seeking employment to come to them.

Amazon announced this morning that it’s now beginning its holiday hiring spree as its fulfillment centers across the country. It’s hoping to hire 70,000 workers to help deal with what it sees as a 40 percent increase in customer demand over the last year.

Now, seasonal employment is sometimes seen as a bad thing. After all, you’re only working for a few months, and then dumped out on the curb once the company no longer needs you. The same is true at Amazon, but the online retailer says that it does intend to convert a few thousand of this year’s seasonal employees into full-time permanent employees after the holidays are over. In fact, the retailer says that it added more than 40,000 jobs since 2008.

“So far this year, we have converted more than 7,000 temporary employees in the U.S. into full-time, regular roles and we’re looking forward to converting thousands more after this holiday season,” said Dave Clark, Amazon’s vice president of worldwide operations and customer service. “Each year, seasonal jobs lead to thousands of long-term, full-time roles in our sites—jobs that offer great pay, benefits starting on day one and the chance for employees to further their education through our Career Choice program.”

Speaking of that Career Choice program, that’s has to be the number one reason most people work for Amazon. If you happen to get hired on permanently, Amazon will pay 95 percent of your tuition if you work towards a degree in an in-demand field. It doesn’t even need to relate to work at Amazon as its employees are pursuing degrees in game design, health care, IT programming and visual communications.

If that sounds good to you, you can apply for a seasonal job by hitting up the Amazon Fulfillment page. If working in a warehouse doesn’t sound that great to you, let it also be known that GameStop is looking to hire on 17,000 seasonal employees for the holidays.

  • Target Ticket Enters Crowded On-Demand Video Space with a Focus on Being ‘Family Friendly’

Target Ticket Enters Crowded On-Demand Video Space with a Focus on Being ‘Family Friendly’

After months of beta testing, Target has just launched its new on-demand digital video service to the public.

It’s called Target Ticket, and at launch it boasts over 30,000 individual titles. Many of these titles are available to either buy or rent, and Target says the lowest price starts at $0.99. Every video has to be paid for individually – a la iTunes of Amazon Instant Video. There’s no subscription plan offered that would turn Target Ticket into a Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu competitor at the moment.

Target seems to have brought the goods with this one – at least offering the same high-caliber content that competitors like iTunes offer. We’re talking major movie releases, next-day TV episodes from shows like The Walking Dead and The Big Bang Theory. Target Ticket also lets users buy whole seasons or individual episodes of popular premium content from the likes of HBO and Showtime. At launch, it’s available on a multitude of devices including Android and iOS, Roku, Xbox LIVE, and Samsung’s line of internet-ready devices. Target says that more availability is coming soon.

“Many of our guests told us that streaming and viewing videos is complicated, so we created Target Ticket to simplify the experience,” said Anne Stanchfield, Target’s divisional merchandise manager of entertainment. “Target Ticket will help guests who are looking for a kid-safe, easy-to-use service that mirrors what they have come to expect from Target’s entertainment offerings – a premium selection of the newest titles plus exclusive content, all at an affordable price.”

And that family-friendly aspect of the service is one that Target Ticket could use to separate itself from a crowded field of digital video providers. Whether it’ll help their cause is yet to be seen, but they are pushing it pretty hard. Through a partnership with Common Sense Media, one of Target Ticket’s noted features is extensive reviews and ratings guides and built-in filters for parents to use to make sure their kids aren’t buying the latest Game of Thrones boob-fest. Target Ticket also has support for multiple user profiles.

Other incentives to use Target Ticket over other similar services include a 5% off bonus for Target REDcard holders and “exclusive to Target” bonus footage attached to some content.

Still, Target Ticker enters a ring full of big, scary, established fighters. And that ring is filling up fast. You can check out Target Ticket here

  • Amazon’s Fire OS 3.0 ‘Mojito’ Comes With A Ton Of New Features, Major ‘Mayday’ Customer Support Feature

Amazon has unveiled version 3.0 of its Android-based Fire OS, named “Mojito.” The announcement comes with that of Amazon’s new Kindle Fire HD & Kindle Fire HDX tablets.

    New Amazon Tablets

The OS starts with Android, but adds a number of its own features. It does include native Android app compatibility, so apps that work on Android should work on Fire OS with “little to no work”. It also supports HTML5 apps.

It includes GameCircle and Whispersync for Games so users can sync their game progress across devices. It also includes In-App Purchasing and Mobile Associates so users can buy digital and physical items using their Amazon accounts.

“Amazon Device Messaging gives customers a single messaging platform for all their apps built on Amazon Web Services, which developers can take advantage of to send notifications to Kindle Fire tablets,” Amazon says. “Amazon Coins offers every new Kindle Fire customer 500 coins ($5) of virtual currency to use for purchasing apps, games, or in-app items on Kindle Fire. Amazon Coins is an easy way for customers to spend money on developers’ apps and offers another opportunity to drive traffic and app downloads increasing monetization even further.”

The new OS includes some accessibility tools like Screen Reader, Explore by Touch and Screen Magnifier, which can be enabled across most of its features.

There are a number of cloud services and interface improvements that come with Mojito. The redesigned interface includes carousel and grid views, for example. Cloud Collections make apps, books, newspapers and magazines easier to find, according to Amazon. They’re automatically stored in the cloud, and Whispersync syncs them across devices and apps. There’s a 1-Tap Archive feature that identifies items that haven’t been used recently and lets you easily store them in the cloud to free up device space.

The Kindle FreeTime feature lets parents whitelist movies, books, apps and games that are appropriate for their Kids, and there’s a new “For Kids” suggestion feature.

There is OS-level sharing with Facebook and Twitter. Goodreads is built into the reading experience, and X-Ray for Movies and TV now shows the names of TV theme and movie soundtrack songs as they play. It also shows trivia and “goofs” while watching a movie or show (powered by IMDb). X-Ray has also expanded for music with synced lyrics. The Second Screen feature lets users “fling” content from their device to their TV.

“Quiet Time, directly accessed from the quick settings menu, lets you mute all incoming notifications or calendar reminders. In addition, Quiet Time can be tied to a particular activity such as reading,” Amazon says. “Quick Switch uses a global swipe gesture from anywhere in the system to go between multiple apps, and unlike standard Android, works with individual content items like different textbooks without navigating home.”

Amazon has made improvements to the download manager so that it adjusts the number of simultaneous downloads per devices to not impact performance. It also pauses downloads when you go to watch Amazon videos so it doesn’t affect video quality.

Amazon has replaced the standard Android graphics with its own Graphics Direct Texture system designed to load higher-res images quickly. As a result things like the Carousel and media libraries can quickly and smoothly load large, detailed images.

Mojito has also improved touch responsiveness, and Reading Mode has been optimized to give users 17 hours of battery life when reading.

Amazon is really looking to break further into the enterprise with Mojito and the new devices. Here’s the feature list the company is touting as making the new tablets enterprise-ready:

    • Wi-Fi networks with WPA2 support for secure access to corporate apps, documents and resources like SharePoint.
    • Email that makes it even easier for business customers to set up their accounts, group conversations by subject, sync their email and more.
    • Print documents and emails directly from Kindle Fire to a wireless printer.
    • Built-in OfficeSuite to read documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
    • Native VPN client, for instant access to corporate networks while on the road or at home.
    • Secure hardware data encryption on Kindle Fire HDX.
    • Kerberos authentication for single sign-on and the ability to browse secure Intranet websites from the Silk browser on Kindle Fire.
    • Native SCEP (Simple Certificate Exchange Protocol) client to retrieve digital certificates for secure resources.
    • Kindle-specific device management APIs that integrate with existing mobile device management (MDM) systems to make it easy for IT departments to manage Kindle Fire. Kindle Fire supports a wide range of MDM solutions including Amazon’s Whispercast service as well as third-party vendors like AirWatch, Citrix, Fiberlink, Good Technology, and SOTI.

“Kindle Fire is already the second most popular tablet at work in the U.S.,” said Raghu Murthi, Vice President of Enterprise and Education at Amazon. “As employees increasingly bring their own devices to work, the new Kindle Fire tablets can be easily integrated into the workplace with the new enterprise features, including encryption, secure Wi-Fi, a native VPN client, integration with leading MDM solutions, and Kerberos support for Intranet access.”

There’s one feature of Mojito that Amazon is calling “revolutionary”. That would be the Mayday button. This provides user with free on-device 24×7 tech support. It’s built into the Quick Settings. It allows you to call upon an Amazon expert, who will appear on screen, and can help a user with any feature on the device, even by drawing on the screen.

    Mayday button

If it’s as good as it sounds, this certainly takes customer service up a notch. Amazon says it has a response time “goal” of 15 seconds or less. You can see the advisor, but they can’t see you.

Fire OS 3.0 is available only on the new Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX tablets, though some features will make their way to other devices in an update in November.

  • Amazon Announces Kindle Fire HD Refresh, Ships October 2

Last year, Amazon entered the HD tablet market with the Kindle Fire HD. It was a 7-inch tablet with a 1280×800 resolution, and some decent specs. Now that very same tablet is getting a refresh to become the cheap entry level tablet in Amazon’s Kindle Fire fleet.

Amazon announced today that the newly refreshed Kindle Fire HD is now available for pre-order and will be launching on October 2. The new Kindle Fire HD is nearly identical to last year’s model. It’s a little slimmer, sports better audio, but doesn’t really do anything new beyond that.

Well, there is one thing – the new Kindle Fire HD will retail for only $139. The original Kindle Fire went on sale for $199 two years ago, and now Amazon has managed to bring the price down of last year’s flagship tablet to an incredibly affordable $139. That price will get you a decent tablet outfitted with Amazon’s latest Android-based OS – Fire OS 3.0, or Mojito.

“Two years ago, we revolutionized the tablet industry with the breakthrough $199 price point for tablets—now we’re doing it again with the $139 price point,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “$139 now gets you a 1280×800 216 ppi HD display, a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, Fire OS 3.0, dual speakers with Dolby audio, vast selection and Amazon-exclusive features like Prime Instant Video downloads, Second Screen, Kindle FreeTime, X-Ray and more.”

The Kindle Fire HD isn’t the most powerful tablet anymore, but it’s more than decent enough to serve a casual user’s everyday needs. At that price point, it’s almost hard to ignore too. That’s obviously what Amazon wants though as it uses the allure of low pricing to hook users into its ecosystem of digital sales.

Now then, you may be scoffing at the Kindle Fire HD and want something with a little more kick. Well, that’s where the newly announced Kindle Fire HDX tablets come in. They pack the latest hardware, and will be shipping later this year.

  • Amazon Announces Kindle Fire HDX, Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″

Just like every other consumer electronic device, the Kindle Fire HD was expected to get a refresh at some point this year. It was just that nobody expected Amazon to suddenly unveil them without any word of warning.

Amazon suddenly announced three new Kindle Fire models yesterday evening – the new Kindle Fire HD, the Kindle Fire HDX and the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″. The first is just last year’s Kindle Fire HD serving as a replacement for the entry level Kindle Fire, whereas the latter two is where the real magic is happening.

As the rumors suggested, the Kindle Fire HDX sports a much higher resolution than the previous generation. The Kindle Fire HDX sports a resolution of 1920×1200 whereas the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″ sports a resolution of 2560×1600.

Besides the new resolutions, Amazon made sure that its tablets are packing best-in-class hardware. Both Kindle Fire HDX models sport a Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU. In other words, the Kindle Fire HDX will be one of most powerful tablets to be released this year.

Rounding up the hardware specs, both Kindle Fire HDX tablets sport dual stereo speakers, a front-facing HD camera, an 8MP rear-facing camera and 2GB of RAM.

The specs may be nice, but what about the software itself? Amazon say its latest tablets will be running Fire OS 3.0, or Mojito. It’s based on Jelly Bean, but Amazon isn’t saying which version. I’d put my money on Android 4.2, but a 4.3-based OS would be a nice surprise.

So, what does Fire OS 3.0 bring to the table? For starters, there’s an improved interface that better integrates Amazon’s digital storefront with the tablet. That means X-Ray is expanding to include music, alongside its previous support of movies and TV shows. Now you can use X-Ray to see the lyrics of any particular song.

X-Ray for movies and TV has been improved as well with X-Ray for music integration. Now you can see a list of songs that appear in any particular movie or episode of a TV show, and even jump to when that song is heard. Users can also be alerted to random trivia while watching a movie, or see detailed character backstories while watching a TV show.

Amazon is also jumping onto the second screen experience with a new feature that lets users move content from their tablet to the TV. It’s very much like Google’s own Chromecast in that the user just simply “flings” the content to the TV and it immediately starts playing there while the tablet becomes a remote control. The new feature will only support Samsung TVs and the PlayStation 3 at first, but it will launch on the PS4 later this year.

This is all well and good, but most of it is pretty much expected at this point. Does Amazon have any out of left field ideas to differentiate its tablets from the competition? It does, and it’s called Mayday. Here’s how Amazon describes it:

Having trouble or want to learn how to use a new feature? Simply tap the Mayday button in Quick Settings, and an Amazon expert will appear on your Fire HDX and can co-pilot you through any feature by drawing on your screen, walking you through how to do something yourself, or doing it for you—whatever works best. 15 seconds or less is the Mayday response time goal. Mayday is available 24×7, 365 days a year, and it’s free.

As you can probably guess, Mayday is a pretty big deal. Sure, other companies offer 24/7 tech support, but this is entirely new. Not only are you talking face-to-face with the tech support, but they can actually take control of your tablet to show you how something works. It’s an incredibly helpful feature, and one that I see only Amazon being able to do.

If you find yourself suddenly interested in the new Kindle Fire HDX, you’ll be able to pick up the 7-inch model on October 18 for $229 whereas the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″ goes on sale November 7 for $379. There will also be 4G versions available at a later date for $100 more.

  • Android Tablet: How Miracast Works

    Android Tablet: How Miracast Works

More and more often, as of late, devices are supporting “Miracast.” Making its way into the mainstream, Miracast is a magnificent feature that could possibly wipe out other video streaming standards in a very fragmented Android market. Miracast acts like a wireless HDMI cable in order to mirror your Android device onto your TV screen in high def with audio. According to CNET, Once Miracast is enabled, everything, from the general interface, to apps and videos, is duplicated on the big screen, no need for a cable connecting the two devices. The thing that sets it apart is, it doesn’t rely on your home’s Wi-Fi network. Here’s how Miracast works:

Miracast is built on the underestimated Wi-Fi Direct technology, which was first introduced in Android 4.0. It allows a user to create a private (ad-hoc) network that allows other users to connect and share files. The technology didn’t easily catch on in the mainstream, but it paved the way for Miracast.

With Wi-Fi Direct as the foundation, Miracast doesn’t need to rely on your home’s network, becuse it creates is own. Your television creates the ad-hoc network, which is discovered by your Android phone or tablet. The two devices are paired, and data can flow freely between them.

The options are seemingly endless when it comes to what you can stream to your TV, and Miracast uses the H.264 codec to mirror videos in 1080p and 5.1 surround sound audio. Here’s the kicker, thanks to a DRM layer, even copyright-protected materials like DVDs and music can be mirrored.

To make Miracast work, you need a Miracast-compatible device and a Miracst TV or dongle. If your device runs Android 4.2 or later, you have Miracast, also known as the “Wireless display” feature.

Now, you set up your Miracast receiver. Though the tech is relatively new, a number of TV manufacturers like Sony, LG, and Panasonic, are integrating Miracast into their televisions, but, unless you purchased a TV in the last year, it’s probably not going to be Miracast-ready. In that case, you’ll need a dongle. Head to Amazon and you’ll see a myriad of Miracast dongles, and also, Best Buy creates one under its brand, Rocketfish. Most of these dongles cost around $40-60, and are only designed to do one thing, mirror your Android device.

Connect your Miracast dongle, switch your TV to input. Then, on your Android device, go to Settings > Display > Wireless display. Of course, this might vary a bit depending on your device. Now, turn the wireless display feature on, and wait a moment while the device searches for the Miracast dongle or TV. When it appears in the list, tap to connect, and a few seconds later, you’ll see your Android device duplicated on the big screen! Be aware that locking your Android will also black out your TV, so if you’re watching a movie, hook your Android up to its charger.

Now, I know some are thinking, “Isn’t this like Chromecast?”. Not at all, and here’s why:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxSJ57Q3zak

With Miracast, your TV or dongle is dependent on your Android device the entire time the devices are paired, for example, if your Android goes to sleep, your TV’s screen blacks out, too. This co-dependency is a great advantage, but just remember to plug that thing in if you’re going to be a while.

In contrast, Chromecast only relies on the mobile device for a moment during the initial setup. Once the Chromecast receiver knows what content you want it to play, the mobile device holds none of the load, in which case you’re free to multitask, lock your device, or queue up the next video.

However, for this very reason, Chromecast is not nearly as dynamic as Miracast. It only works with compatible video and music apps and will not play DRM-protected content on your device. Now as for mirroring, Chromecast let’s you mirror you Chrome browser (in beta). That’s it.
